Capital City of the Ascendancy

OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
SETTING INFORMATION
  • City Name: Regnum
  • Classification: Metropolis
  • Location: Verun, Shiraya Expanse
  • Affiliation: The Ascendancy
  • Population: Heavy
  • Demographics:
  • Wealth: High - Capital City of Regional Power
    .
  • Stability: High - As the capital city of the Ascendancy, Regnum is the focal point of most of the nation's military power. Due to this, threats both internal and external are few and far between. Being the first of the nation's cities, Regnum is easily the most secure location in the Ascendancy.
    .
  • Freedom & Oppression: There is no greater reflection of the Ascendancy's culture than Regnum. Though the city was built to encircle the central palace, the citizenry do not look upon the Throne with disdain of fear. Rather, the structure is a refuge in times of trouble - so too is the monarch. The people freely trust in the monarchy as they are guaranteed many rights, a basic standard of living, and employment. As a result, the people are almost as "free" as a comparable, democratic city; with the key differences being the government's restrictions on select activities. For example, recreational narcotic usage is prohibited while weapons ownership is legal and regulated. The people themselves believe in the "strength of mankind" - and therefore have a bias towards species who are not Human/Near-Human passing. A Wookie, for example, would have a much more difficult experience in Regnum than a Twi'lek or Epicanthix. While the bias is not written into law or state-sponsored, it is a widespread reality throughout the city and the Ascendancy proper.
    .
  • Description: As a capital city, Regnum is easily the most populated, most advanced, and most secure location in the Ascendancy. It is similar to most metropoles in that it features many districts, civilian housing options, starports, and local defenses. Moreover, it is encircled by imposing obsidian walls that are the city's most defining characteristic.
POINTS OF INTEREST

As a descendant of the fallen Confederacy, Regnum can be considered the spiritual successor of Golbah City. Its organizers deliberately utilized similar naming conventions to pay homage to their former home.

THE CROWN | Royal District - The Crown is a District composed of the reigning monarch's palace and the surrounding structures. Typically, this district is closed to the public, save for select holidays and emergency situations.
  • Domus Ascendente | Ascendant Palace - When Regnum was just a congregation of tents surrounded by paltry walls, a crude bunker was erected for the purpose of civilian evacuation. Over the next seven years, as the city's defenses increased manyfold, the bunker was expanded and reborn as the Domus Ascendente (otherwise known as the Ascendant Palace or simply the Palace.) This imposing structure is draped in the finery expected of a monarch and is the residence of the Ascendancy's leadership. However, despite the regal appearance, the original function of the structure yet remains. In times of peril, all citizens of Regnum can find refuge within its walls.
THE GRID | Light District - The Grid is a District revolving around the city's vital infrastructures, namely power and water. A network of solar panels, generators, and vaporators are assembled in neat grids throughout this region (earning its name.) The workers responsible for keeping and maintaining the Grid are also afforded housing in this district, for ease of transport.

THE HUB | Residential District - The aptly-named Hub is the most populated of Regnum's districts. The majority of the citizenry work, live, and play in this area. As a result, a number of shops, dining options, and housing characterize the Hub. Moreover, the primary starport of Regnum is located in the center of the district, affording visitors a bustling glimpse of the Ascendancy's heart.

SECURITY
  • Security Rating: Maximum
Having spent its formative years fending off assault after assault, Regnum now features exceptional defenses. Its most iconic feature is a series of obsidian-hued walls that encircle the city. Patrols by ground and air are a regular occurrence outside the city limits, and local defenders reside internally for rapid response. Regnum also features basic shield generators to repel varying forms of bombardment. Overall, in terms of metropoli, Regnum is very well defended.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

In 867 ABY, following the dissolution of the Confederacy of Independent Systems, a remnant settled on Verun. Composed of the former nation's government and refugees, a landing zone of tents and cannibalized starships formed the basis of a new home. Verun itself was severely unkind towards its new visitors, as was the Shiraya Expanse as a whole. Over the next several months, the remnant had to contend with raiders, literal monstrosities, and minimal resources.

They were forced to either adapt or perish. Survival was the only option.

In order to address the most dangerous of the world's threats, a bunker of sorts was hastily constructed. When enemies or dangerous fauna drew near, the civilians could safely hide within this structure whilst the warriors won the day. Moreover, the people encircled themselves with walls born of scrap metal and rocks, which helped stave off the planet's natural aggression. Though extremely difficult, the settlement endured and began to find its footing.

One of the most challenging chapters in the city's history came in the form of betrayal. Just as the city was beginning to experiment with moisture farming technologies, one of the local warlords made a bargain. A few non-Human members of the city were happy to trade their souls for creature comforts, and so an assassination attempt was carried out on the Ascendancy's leadership. The attempt, a bombing, not only damaged the city - but created a devastating breach in the walls. Killing the leadership was a failed endeavor, however, but the warlord made the most of the newfound vulnerability.

In the end, hundreds were lost between the explosion and the subsequent raids. From thenceforth, trust in non-Human/Near-Human species plummeted.

But Regnum continued to grow in spite of the attack. Over the next seven years, the city's humble origins blossomed into something beautiful. The bunker which once held civilians in safety was expanded, culminating in the Palace at the heart of the city. The walls were no longer coppled together by stone and by scrap, but were a monumental defense against the outside world. Now, at the present day, Regnum is the thriving seat of a regional nation.

Its people know safety, security, and happiness under the shadow of its walls.

This is really nicely written; it gives a vivid sense of place, and does a good job of giving writers material for how their characters might feel and be perceived walking the city's streets. Nicely done. It pains me to ask this, because it's so minor and pedantic: could you please link The Ascendancy in the Affiliation section? I know you already linked it above, but that's what the template asks for.

Freedom & Oppression (Original): There is no greater reflection of the Ascendancy's culture than Regnum. For example, recreational narcotic usage is prohibited while prostitution is legal and regulated.
