The Vanguard Initiative was initially a success. The Super Star Dreadnought created from this program was a testament to the martial prowess of the second iteration of the Galactic Alliance. However, all of their successes counted for naught when the Sith Empire'sEmpire's insidious machinations came to light. When the Vanguard took her maiden voyage into the skies above Coruscant, a majority of her crew turned against the other before two of the Sith-Imperial Super Star Destroyers clove the massive warship in half. Both of the severed sections plummeted to the surface as the planet's gravity took hold. When they impacted the surface, the devastation spread across swathes of the planet's surface - damaging significant portions of the Underworld.
For years, the severed sections of the behemoth languished on the surface of Coruscant, as the various governments who took stewardship over the planet sought to forget the legacy the second Galactic Alliance left behind. They cited that such gravestones were cursed and unsafe for any unauthorized personnel to explore the ruined portions of the Dreadnought. That was where the Republic Engineering Corporation came in, as they managed to earn the right to excavate the supposedly cursed relic from the planet's surface. In doing so, the Corporation found itself embarked on several long-term reconstruction projects that would see the districts affected by the sections of the crashed warship repaired.
Thus began the effort of reshaping what was, into the hope that could be.
In secret, utilizing their network of deep-space installations, the Corporation worked tirelessly to restore the vessel to its former glory. However, there was something that was deeply flawed with the restoration efforts, and the two broken pieces wouldn't reforge - no matter how hard the various design teams tried. It was at that point that the world of Mon Calamari was brutally subjugated by the Sith Empire, and her people were exiled to the stars. Republic Engineering knew that the Wayward peoples of Dac were master shipwrights, and they could hopefully find an answer to their problem through their insight. When the Free Dac Engineering Corps was established and brought into the fold, they too had difficulties understanding why the pieces wouldn't connect.
It wasn't until a low-ranking contractor - who was assigned to the project and had backgrounds in both Mon Cala and Republic Engineering - managed to divine the issue. The two pieces wouldn't bond together because the Force had other plans for the vessel. While many considered that opinion to be nothing more than hogwash, some believed this contractor's words. As it turned out, those individuals were a part of the project's research and development division - which managed to bond fragments of the massive warship together after forcing them through a molecular furnace, turning them into something entirely new. When these findings were reported to the various section heads, the Corporation elected to proceed with this new direction - as they would've made no progress otherwise.
So, the Vanguard would live again - but not as it once did. Its entire framework would be remade in the Mon Calamari style as a testament to the defiance of the wayward natives of Dac and to the ancient heroes of the Galactic Civil War. The internal systems would be an enhanced variation of what was considered standard by the Republic Engineering Corporation, where a vast majority of the warship would be wholly automated and could be operated by a significantly reduced Organic complement. This meant that the warship's systems would be controlled by a gestalt consciousness, which in turn was overseen by an artificial intelligence, who would be programmed to supplement their flesh and blood shipmates.
From there, this new vessel - born from the ashes of the fallen Vanguard - would be further enhanced by the addition of advanced Thyrsian technologies, which would significantly increase the warship's combat prowess as well as reinforcing the ancient stereotype of the impregnability of Mon Calamari defences. With redundant shielding systems and countless defensive measures, the new iteration of the Vanguard would surpass the lasting legacy of the cursed ship that was destroyed in the skies above Coruscant. It was designed to survive the cut of a thousand blades and punch into the heart of enemy formations - whilst utilizing its specialized array of weapons to defeat their enemies.
Much of what was made available was familiar enough amongst the many battleships that stalked the stars to speak briefly on this new warship's specialized armament. However, what made this warship truly dangerous to any hostile vessel that situated itself afore the Vanguard-reborn, was the tri-barreled plasmatic pulse cannon affixed to its central spine. This weapon not only catapulted swirling spheres of highly-ionized plasma at enemy warships but was also capable of disabling them as well - due to the massive electrical surge that would disrupt their power grid. Naturally, the effects of this weapon system would depend entirely on the hostile warship and how capable their ionic shielding was.
When the spark of hope returned in the shape of a reconstituted Galactic Alliance, the Republic Engineering Corporation informed their fledgling Senate of their secret project and the ultimate fate of the Vanguard. There was trepidation at first, as many representatives believed it was a foolish endeavour to take on such a massive expense so soon after the merger between the Republic and the Core Alliance. However, as the Corporation'sCorporation's delegation explained, the production was all but complete. Their new Star Defender would simply need to be maintained in the subsequent efforts to unify the Core Regions, and be staffed by a competent - if not capable crew. Much of the initial and expenses related to production were already taken care of, and due to the amount of debris that littered the space lanes - raw materials weren't hard to come by.
With reluctance, a majority of the Senate voted in favour of accepting the Corporation's generous bounty and bringing the vessel into the fold. It would be assigned to the Galactic Alliance Defence Force, and emblazoned with the Starbird resurgent. All that remained was the designation of the warship, and the model thereafter. To that end, the Republic Engineering Corporation turned to that low-level contractor for insight, and the subsequent bequeathment of a suitable appellation. Thus, the first generation of the Startide-Class Star Defenders were born, and as the start of something new - was christened as the Alliance Ascendant.
