Faction Midvinter In Summer (NJO)

As Nida's gaze met Connel's own, the pair exchanged a knowing look. Buster was well trained, but Theya…less so. One could only control the boundless energy and rapt curiosity of a toddler so much.

The little girl squealed with excitement, chubby arms flailing as Buster bounded forward, only to stopp inches from her face. With a happy shout, she threw her arms around the pup's neck and buried her little face into his fur.

"Gentle," came the reminder from her mother. Theya pulled back just a little, patting Buster on the head with one pink hand.

"It's been a while, Connel," Nida said by way of greeting. “I trust you’ve been well? And your parents?” Violet eyes shifted to the Zabrak, clad in traditional Jedi robes. She smiled.

"Nida Heavenshield," she tilted her head to the Padawan. "My daughter is rather excitable. I'm sorry that she startled your…"

Her eyes narrowed ever so slightly as she tried to make out the features of the little head peering over Azurine's shoulder.

Briefly following her mother's line of sight, Theya caught sight of Cinnamon on her perch. Her pink face lit up further, if such a thing was even possible.

"Kitty!" she cheered, extending both arms up to Cinnamon.

The world was quiet beyond the gates of Heavenheim. No song of city, no clatter of life, just the whisper of wind tracing frozen branches, and the slow breath of snowfields that stretched like a soft blanket toward the pale horizon. Eve walked alone, save for the delicate patter of paws at her side.

Isari padded just ahead of her, silver eyes alert, ears flicking with every shift of the landscape. They moved together in slow rhythm, step by step through the fields, the snow crunching gently beneath Eve's boots. It wasn't a patrol. It wasn't a mission. It was something quieter. Gentler. A walk.

A meditation.

The cold stung softly at her face, kissed her lashes and nipped at her uncovered cheek. She welcomed it. Every sensation felt grounding — the weight of her cloak, the icy bite of air in her lungs, the ache in her legs from climbing a small rise. She was here. She was alive. And in this moment, that was enough.

Her breath fogged in the air before her, curling like mist, then fading. She let her thoughts fade too. There was no need for words. She savoured the feeling coming from her heart; it had finally found stillness in a place that didn't demand anything from her.

A soft rustle in the snow made her pause. Isari had gone still, not tense, but alert. Ahead of them, a creature emerged from a stand of ice-cloaked trees. Tall, slender, its magnificent antlers like wind-swept branches, the beast stepped into the open without fear. Its dark eyes met hers, and in that shared moment, Eve raised her hand gently.

"Isari," she whispered; a simple instruction of restraint. The fox blinked once, then sat, tail wrapping neatly around her paws. The creature watched a moment longer, then bent its head to graze again at a patch of stubborn moss. The moment passed. The world continued breathing.

Eve let herself sink into a kneeling position, and pressed a bare hand to the ice, her fingertips burning slightly, but she didn't pull away. She felt it, the pulse of life beneath the frost. The stillness. The truth of this place. Her silver eye lifted to the sky. Pale sun crowned the hills, casting the world in amber and white.

"Still here," she whispered quietly.

She closed her eye.

And smiled.

"I doubt she'll ever not be gentle. Firm like her mother, perhaps, but always gentle at heart." It's what he hoped for, at least. This galaxy had a way of chewing out the good in people. And yet as he glanced over to watch the war between the King of Midvinter and the dangerous duo, he found himself smiling that much more. So long as there were people who sought good through all the evil, this galaxy wasn't a terrible place to raise children.

He found himself looking again to Valery before he leaned over, grazing her cheek with a gentle kiss. No explanation, just felt like it. Even with the deeper glares from the youngest Noble's in their arms. "Ohho? Well, I'm glad you did Aurra." His gaze shifted to Nina, who had approached to speak with her. Would she be alright with talking with others?

Aurra was the quietest for certain, but hopefully she'd be fine with family.

The moment Thurion approached, Aeryn and Adam wasted no time announcing their grand reentry.

"Mommy, Daddy! Look!" Aeryn ashouted, grinning from her perch atop her grandfather's shoulder.

"Grandpa caught us!" Adam added proudly, arms stretched out like a champion being paraded through town.

Valery's laugh was instant and bright, the kind that warmed even the cold Midvinter air. She stepped forward just as Thurion pulled her into a careful embrace, and despite the little weight of Eryx nestled protectively in her arms, she returned it fully, head resting briefly against the taller Jedi's shoulder.

"It's so good to see you again, Thurion," she said softly. "It seems the little ones are happy to see you, too." She pulled back with a smile, eyes flicking to Aeryn and Adam above. "You two better thank him for going easy on you."

Just as she turned toward Kahlil, she caught the glance in his eyes right before he leaned in and kissed her cheek. A simple gesture — but it undid her. Her entire face went warm in an instant: cheeks blooming with color, ears tinting pink beneath strands of wind-tossed hair. She blinked, then gave him a look so tender it made the whole snowy world around them feel a little less cold.

She blew him a quick kiss in return — a silent little "I love you" for her beloved.

Then Aurra, clutching her mysterious find, looked up as Nina approached and greeted her. The little girl hesitated, shy for a moment, her small hands tightening briefly around the gift in her grasp. But when Nina knelt and smiled, speaking gently and offering her hand, Aurra's nerves softened just a little.

"Thank you," she murmured, cheeks rosy. Her voice was small but sincere. She looked up at Valery, then back to Nina,
"It's for Mommy."

Valery blinked, her heart nearly stopping, and crouched slightly so she was level with her daughter.

"Oh, sweetheart," she whispered, voice catching just a little. "I love you."

Aurra smiled, hopped a little on her feet, and looked up at her father, hoping to get his approval for getting Mom a gift. A birthday gift!

"Oh. I'm not...actually cold. I'm just talking about the weather...Y'know. What people talk about...when they aren't good at talking."

Shan rubbed the back of his neck as they wandered, giving a few short nods as Katherine spoke about her interactions with Padawans. It pleased Shan to hear that she was at least helping some out, even if she didn't have any of her own.

"I've been doing the same. Zaiya's my Padawan as well once again, though I'm co-teaching her alongside Iris. It is...fun to say the least."

It was a good thing for Shan's mental health as well. Being able to teach was a blessing to him, but he always found it helped him more when he had a dedicated student of his own. In the past, he might have thought of it as a chance to make up for the mistakes he had done...but he had realised recently that he didn't need to make up anything.

"It doesn't matter how long it's been since I've seen you like this. I've known you longer as being shorter than me, than being some giant like you are now. Not that I'm complaining. You seem happier like this."

Which was what was important to him at the end of the day. As long as the people he cared for were happy, Shan could be happy...even if he was somewhat disgruntled at being the smallest.

Though Shan blinked at the sound of a new voice, glancing over to the source of it. He couldn't help but grin at Saphira Ohm Saphira Ohm 's politeness. It was a bit extreme but at the same time, Shan had always been an overly polite person himself when he had been a Padawan. He gave the Altiri a short nod, before glancing over towards Katherine.

"I am sure the both of us are able to help you. What exactly do you need?"

"This is Cinder. Master Si and I found him on Cathar."

A fond memory for the boy it seemed. It bode well that he formed connections to people and animals alike. Something Aadihr had since accepted would not come naturally to himself - not something he mourned, just an observation. The vicarious joy of seeing Aris's arua intertwine and brighten in the presence of his friends was enough.

A soft smile was all that he offered, without interrupting the Beorni. He wondered if Cinder struggled with the cold more than Aris did, that is to say, barely at all, but perhaps some caloric expenditure to maintain high body heat was the case? Aadihr could only speculate until he noticed his mind wandering, which he brought back to focus.

Brander and Zaiya seemed get a long well enough. Seing the aura of Brander light up at each new discovery brought a similar vicarious sense of wonder at watching the reaction.

Aadihr was content to watch life go by through the lenses of others.

"We seek to learn,"
"To understand your traditions and ways."

"As she says, we've come to learn what your kin are willing to share. At the very least, I've come as a chaperone for the young ones." Aadihr said playfully, reaching over to tussle Brander's hair.

One day he'd work up the courage to tease Aris like that, but even if he weren't the Grandmaster's kid, he didn't want even consider the possibility of being on the wrong side of a scorching flinch reflex.

Brander marveled at the magnificent Firebird that seemed to be friends with Aris, although he didn't say anything about it. Then, Brander's attention was captured by the pretty crystals Zaiya took out from her satchel. He was staring quite obviously at them and how the light played on them. They were truly pretty. His attention was arrested when he felt a warm hand tussle the mess of ruddy auburn red hair atop his head. He looked up at his mentor and decidedly moved to stand by his side, offering him a curious look. "You're a what?" he asked his teacher, unfamiliar with the word.

He squinted at Aadihr and crossed his arms, more to rub at his own shoulders. Then, Brander gave him a look.
Not just any look....the look. The kind you give when you're one step away from being deeply, existentially offended.

"...I'm not a baby,"
he said flatly.

There was a pause. Then, as if realizing he needed to back that up with hard evidence, he squared his shoulders with theatrical conviction.

"For the record," he declared, "I haven't bitten anyone in, like, a whole month."

He folded his arms again, this time with a decisive little huff. "And I brush my teeth. Mostly. And I only got lost once today.... And I have a job!"

A proud nod.
"I think that qualifies me for non-babysitter status."

Aris nodded his head in agreement with Zaiya. What they were here for wasn't really the tea, but the shaping of ice. He glanced about the town none the less. Other species, intermingling and speaking. It was good to see, wasn't it? The Beorni were said to be secluded, but that seemed to have changed in the recent years. He did glance to Brander and Aadihr with a brow raised briefly, but, didn't say too much else.

He was here to learn.

Paying the Capital a Visit

nGPMKK4.png

A shuttle was taken to the world of Midvinter and a Besalisk Jedi Padawan Learner descended from the door and ramp of the shuttle to make his way off to the Capital - Heavenheim. Geared up with the necessary equipment to venture and meet the locals see if anyone needs support. The possibility of meeting other fellow Jedi is also on the table maybe Padawan Learners, Knights and Masters become familiar with them on the field.

"Hmm never been here before so this is Heavenheim the Capital of Midvinter. Well best see if anyone needs help in any way and explore a bit. Thank the Force it's not hot like Tatooine."

Tyron made his way from the Landing Bay within the Docks of Midvinter to make his way through the crowds and terrain to end up in the Capital known as Heavenheim. Once there he was taking in the presence through the Force he could sense. The Besalisk did his best to appear friendly and greet civilians that passed him although his appearance would startle some of the younglings as he explored.

"This isn't easy. It's like people haven't seen my kind before. Maybe not up close and in person still. Gotta' focus and see if I can be help to anyone while I'm here."

"...I'm going to stop you right there. I don't have a single clue as to what half of that means. Silver Jedi? Ashla? Antarian Rangers?"

Mykel wasn't bothered by her lack of knowledge - everyone had to start somewhere - but rather her dismissive attitude. Maybe it had all come off as trivial factoids to her, but it was his life. He would have been more than happy to fill in the blanks, but she had already sped up further to catch up with the group.

He simply did the same in silence.

His mood quickly brightened after he had caught up with the larger group and entered the Beorni city with them, respectfully dismounting his speeder and leading it the rest of the way on foot. He initially took in the fantastical sights and sounds with his normal senses, then closed his eyes to immerse himself in the beautiful ambiance of the Force concentrated there. It soothed his spirt, much needed after his clashes with the Drengir on Tython.

He had arrived as a complete stranger, but already he felt like he was at home, the wonderous Song of the Force like silver chimes through his mind.

Following some introductions, their Beorni guide would query each of them about their purpose for coming to his home. Mykel paid particular attention to Reina's answer, gaining some insight about her in the process. So she loved the water, hailing from some flavor of aquatic world. Mykel loved it as well, sailing along the great waterways near the old Silver Rest as a youngling with his parents, seeing the great oceans of Kashyyyk that many tended to overlook. His personal saber form was even based around water. So there was at least one common point between them.

Eventually, his turn came to answer.

"Communion," he answered softly, bowing his head slightly. "To better myself as a Jedi and as a man. In the galaxy's greatest times of need, your people and world at large have provided much needed champions and saviors time and time again, and so I hope to follow in their example by learning your ways, sir."

Azzie crouched down slowly, her boots crunching softly against the icy terrace stones, her breath visible in the cool Midvinter air. Cinnamon's claws clung to the folds of her robe as the racyon tightened her grip on Azzie's shoulder, chittering softly with her nose twitching and fur bristling.

“Not a threat, just… small and loud. Like you, sometimes.” She murmured, one hand gently rubbing the creature's head.

Cinnamon let out a tiny snort at that, but her body language eased. Just slightly. With careful movements, Azzie slid her arms underneath Cinnamon and lifted her down from her shoulder. "If you can successfully beat some Sith, like I heard you did, then you can handle this easily." She set her gently in the snow near her feet, where Cinnamon immediately sat on her haunches, arms folded once again, nose still twitching but ears perked with curiosity rather than alarm.

Azzie turned her gaze toward the little girl—Theya, Nida had called her—and offered a small, warm smile. With one hand, she reached into the bag of blueberries and nuts at her belt and pulled out a few bright red berries from it. She rose and moved slowly, deliberately, toward the child, careful not to loom.

“For her,” she said gently, extending her hand with the berries. “Cinnamon’s weird about things, but if you offer her some of these, then she might just change her tune."

Her tone was light, the smile on her face reaching her violet eyes for the first time publicly in a while, and her eyes studied Theya’s reaction closely. And Cinnamon’s, too, who had leaned forward just a bit, still watching warily but with clear interest now. Trust, after all, was a two-way street. Especially with racyons.

"Cinnamon is a Ukatis Racyon." She turned as Nida addressed her and dipped her head in acknowledgment. “Azurine Varek, But everyone calls me Azzie.” A pause to cough and take a moment to rest her hands on her upper legs to catch her breath from the amount of energy it took to get her body to cooperate how she wanted it to. A glance at the girl, then back to the woman who was clearly her mother. “No apologies needed. She’s just got a little spirit, is all. If you ask me, that's a good thing."

She meant it, too. Even as a child, Azzie herself had never quite fit the mold of quiet obedience. She’d run headlong into everything, loud and fearless. And maybe… maybe she saw a little of that spark in Theya. The kind that didn’t always follow rules but could change the world anyway. Her smile faltered for a moment in that thought, but she forced it back into place as she straightened herself to look between Nida and Connel.

"You're related to Master Thurion, then?"

Cinnamon finally made a small chitter and crept forward a pace in the snow to sniff at the berries and the little hand she handed them too.

This galaxy could use more moments like this.

Buster was of course laying the “kisses” into the little one as Connel could only watch, chuckle, and shake his head. The Aak Dog wouldn’t hurt her, but gauge how much playing she might want (though he was clearly wanting a lot right now). When Nida approached, he smiled.

Always… clearly “Motherhood” agrees with you, she’s quite the workout. Nodding at Theya appreciatively, he knew that with both the little one, and the Racyon “Cinammon”, Buster was going to sleep all night. When Nida asked about him and his parents, Connel did his best to keep the focus off of him.

They are the “Crazy kids” that they have always been, if not on one side of the galaxy, they’re on the other. He laughed as Buster sidled up next to him, panting a little, clearly a little jealous of Theya wanting to shower Cinammon with attention now, it was cute. Of course this got the pup a few good “Good Boy!” scratches and a treat and he was good.

Alright, we know how my family is, what about you? How’s Thirdas? Uncle Thurion?

Touche, though I’d thought you’d be better at talking, being a doctor ‘n’ all.” She replied, a grin on her face, glancing over at Shan. She couldn’t help herself teasing him, very much like a younger sister would to her older brother. For as much as Katherine had never had actual siblings, she had been around the Nobles plenty. Been witness to many moments between Vera and Aris, to know that part of the family dynamic functioned.

Hearing news about Zaiya brought a smile to the Valkyrie’s face. The Lovalla had practically been a beacon of light and warmth during a bad time in her life. Still confined to a hoverchair, frustrated by limitations and feeling like she’d never recover.

So to learn that she was back to being Shan’s Padawan? Warmed Katherine’s heart a great deal.

I am happier like this, it feels…it almost feels like this was how I was always meant to be. Everything that happened in the past, what I was being forced into becoming. To take it into my own hands, to forge it into something different, better? It feels right.

Though before Katherine could ramble any further, a new presence made themselves known. She sensed them before seeing them, turning to greet the young Altiri as she approached.

She let Shan speak first, inquiring about what the Padawan needed guidance on, but something else cropped to Katherine’s mind first.

Before we get into that, introductions are in order, no?” She said, smiling. “My name is Katherine Holt.” The redhead paused to allow Shan to introduce himself, “What’s your name, young Padawan?

Arnor's oblong snout calmly moved to each one as they stated their reason for coming, saying nothing for the entire duration whilst providing ample time for them to reply to their heart's content. They said they wished to learn; to discover; to understand. He was surprised by the outsiders' candid response, sensing upon their shoulders somehow the weight of the very stars — and such miniscule shoulders to boot, it seemed unfair to place such burdens upon the young and inexperienced. These were not the bumbunctious would-be warriors of his homeworld, but enlightened beings from other worlds.

He knew not whether to admire them, or be afraid of what they were truly capable of beneath pleasantries and peaceful intentions. His neighbors, the Valkyri, had no such powers and fought his kind to near-extinction once upon a time.

He lifted his gaze towards the skies, then back down to the party of Jedi, nose twitching slightly.

"Beorni have travelled stars before," he confirmed the last boy's statement. "Names are recorded, remembered. Calder Icehammer. Kiriko Howlingfjord. Others. Few ever return. Their loss is felt, mourned. Wish they stay here. Home." His paw-hand indicated to his chest where his heart was.

A deep sigh, then a sharp intake of air as the fur-clad mountain rose up on his stubby hind legs to stand upright. "Follow."

The Keeper of Oaths took them deeper into the city, past tea shops whence more earth-quaking throat singing was issued by the congregating Beorni deep in tranquil meditation; past eloborate chimes of wood and ice clattering and singing in the wind; past the ringing of steel from the anvils of Men and Elves, beyond which lay the noticeably dormant forges of the Beorni. They operated in a less fiery manner.

Arnor stepped behind the solitary anvil, far larger than those of his cousins, a sudden turn in mannerisms from that of a bear to that of a craftsman having honed his art for centuries. His eyes narrowed as he beheld the outsiders.

"You have come seeking knowledge of the Arts," his voice was unexpectedly projected into their minds, his expression carved from stone. "The shaping of ice is our most hallowed craft; only a handful of us possess the ability and inclination to devote ourselves fully to discerning its secrets." He broke off a large icicle and placed it upon the anvil, an ice-covered hammer appearing in his raised hand before he brought it down, striking the anvil. A cold blue glow emanated from the hammer as it beat the icicle into shape, producing in but a few strokes a sword of unsurpassed beauty, its blade sharper than the most tempered steel.

"My kind came from ice and snow, and from ice and snow we were made strong. Likewise do we shape ice and snow into strength, but also beauty. Your cystals," he indicated towards the satchel of Zaiya Ceti Zaiya Ceti , causing the stones to float into the palm of his hand. Counting them, he looked to the strange lady and the man by her side. "Ahh, Iskristall," he marvelled. "Our favourite medium."

Gingerly did he scoop a fistful of snow off the ground, and through an elaborate hand motion did he fashion it into a necklace from which hung several empty sockets. Next did he encase the crystals within both hands, applying just enough pressure to shape them into perfectly fitting said sockets, inserting them one at a time. The leftover crystal he fashioned into a ring.

He motioned for Zaiya to approach and placed the necklace around her neck, then turned his gaze on the one called Aris Noble Aris Noble and offered him the ring. "Everlasting," he told them. "Unassailable by fire and steel. Feel their magic; what you call 'the Force'. Such magics are strong on Midvinter — the Great Mother sings her children into existence with the howl of the chill wind. Our kind were once feral beasts roaming the land, until we learned to heed Mother Midvinter's song and became Her firstborn."

Having lowered each troublemaker to the ground, Thurion immediately turned his attention to the toddler in Valery's arms. Having mastered the art of cradling, he plucked the child from her bosom and rocked Eryx to a steady rythm. "Hello, little cub," he nuzzled his nose against his. "Still won't leave Mother's side, I see," he chuckled.

By then Aurra had made first contact with Nina, if a bit warily. It was to be expected by one so timid in stranger's company, but the fact she hadn't completely retreated inwards was a huge step forward in coming out of her shell. Fortunately, she had Grandpa.

Having passed Eryx back to Val, as well as given Yvaine a caress of the cheek, Thurion knelt and took the shy girl into his arms, scooping her off the ground. "Aw, my sweet Aurrie! You musn't be in such a rush to grow," he told her, only half-joking as he buried the lower half of his face in her shoulder, resting her upon one arm whilst the other caressed the back of her head. For some time they remained thus, locked in endless embrace.

For someone to whom childhood was everything, watching more and more of his grandchildren grow up was as painful as it was beautiful. Since he was robbed of his, he always made sure none of them missed out on theirs. Such things leave permanent scars upon the soul, and he wished none of it on those he loved.

His lower lip started to quiver. He dreaded, above all else, that his lifetime would exceed that of even one of his children or grandchildren. More than that; with each child cradled he was reminded of times long gone — a time that would never come again. When Death eventually greets him as a friend, had he done all he could for them?

Sniffing, he had to put Aurra back down so he wouldn't weep in their presence. Wiping a misty eye, the elder hoped to mask his pain with a jovial grin. "That's right, mommy's birthday's coming up! We must celebrate before you head back — in case I won't be there on the day."

Before we get into that, introductions are in order, no?” She said, smiling. “My name is Katherine Holt.” The redhead paused to allow Shan to introduce himself, “What’s your name, young Padawan?

"Oh, apologies, that was rather rude of me," Saphira noted with a dip of her head. "Saphira Ohm is my name."

A sheepish expression came to the young woman's face as she considered her next words. It was a childish seeming question, really but she was endlessly curious.

"I should preface that this isn't a matter of terrible importance, more just my own curiosity," she admitted. "See, I come from Dathomir... snow is not abundant there, and where it is is far too dangerous to visit. I must admit that I thusly have little experience with it. When coming hear I heard other students refer to snow as 'fun.' I've considered their words but..."

She frowned a little.

"Well, the fun they described has yet to manifest," the witch concluded. "I'm afraid I simply have no idea what to do with it. Perhaps that is a silly matter to be concerned about, but I came to the Core to better understand the culture of the galaxy. I would like to put my best foot forward in understanding these things."

She did manage an earnest smile. It was good to commit to something fully, wasn't it? Resolve in regards to a little thing showed resolve in commitment to larger things as well.

Hopefully that would earn her something down the line.
