  • Can Opener: The KSMG-8A has extreme potential when discharged on the active power mode, which uses linear motor rails to accelerate the projectile to hypersonic velocity. This extreme velocity imparts the handgun caliber-sized projectile with kinetic force roughly equivalent to that of a anti-materiel chemical propellant-slugthrower projectile, giving the weapon a reliable ability to penetrate heavy personal and light vehicle-grade armor made of exotic, ultra-resilient materials the likes of beskar and phrik.
  • Surgical: While it lacks the range to be a sniper platform, the KSMG-8A is very accurate and precise within its effective firing range.

  • Shapeshifter: The ergonomics are not fixed. Programmable matter within the weapon’s frame reshapes itself to the user’s hand upon biometric verification, creating a perfect anatomical fit for any species, cybernetic configuration, or armored glove. Controls can be repositioned or re-mapped via neural, blink, and voice command. A Twi’lek, a Besalisk, and a human wearing thick gauntlets will each experience the KSMG-8A as if it were custom-built for them alone.
  • Phase: The energy-reflective nature of the ultrachrome (used in the casing of all factory ammunition types) repels energy fields and gives the slugs a very high chance of passing through energy shields. This allows for potentially significant efficacy against targets that are protected by energy shields.
  • Rapier: While the KSMG-8A is average-sized for a weapon of its class, as an SMG it is lighter and more maneuverable than a rifle. Thus, it is an ideal weapon for the shooter who needs to engage targets in a quick and snappy manner, while remaining light on their feet.
  • Silent Shooter: The KSMG-8A is incredibly stealthy owing to its stealth coatings, making it so that the weapon does not appear on sensors or scanners.

  • Ammunition Weight: Although more efficient than conventional slugthrowers which require propellant in order to fire, the KSMG-8A needs physical ammunition. Thus, compared to energy weapons of the same class, the weapon’s ammunition is less mass and space-efficient.
  • Double Blade: The high explosive and explosive-incendiary ammunition types can represent a risk to the user. A penetrating shot to the magazine could destabilize ammunition cores, potentially triggering sympathetic detonations which risk setting off all of the slugs at once.
  • Storm Surge: As the KSMG-8A exclusively utilizes a verpine linear motor to fire, it is uniquely susceptible to EMP and Ion-based assaults. Unlike a typical slugthrower which utilizes chemical propellant, the weapon quite feasibly be wholly disabled should it be hit by a powerful ionizing discharge that overcomes its defenses.
  • Blast Back: High explosive, CryoBan, and explosive-incendiary ammunition types may pose a severe hazard to the wielder if they are used at particularly close range, notably if the shooter fires at a target while inside the blast radii of the respective ammunition types.
  • Inertia Damper Dependency: The recoil mitigating inertial damper is an active electronic system. If the damper fails, whether due to battle damage, EMP (despite the hardening), or a software glitch, the KSMG-8A will immediately become uncontrollable in full-auto or burst fire. The recoil impulse will walk the muzzle to the sky after 2–3 rounds, making aimed fire virtually impossible. This creates a single point of failure: without the inertial damper, the operator is reduced to semi-automatic only, and even then, follow-up shots may be punishingly slow.

Taking after the KSMG-7 Mk. II, the KSMG-8A (Kainate Submachine Gun Model Eight Select Advanced) is an advanced variant of the more commonly issued model. Like the KSMG-7, the KSMG-8A is a railgun slugthrower that is capable of punching far above its own weight and caliber. The KSMG-8A however takes this to an extreme, firing an 85 grain (special or non-standard rounds only vary negligibly from this mass) projectile at 2.8 km/s, giving it a muzzle energy akin to a dedicated anti-materiel round—22 kilojoules. With this, the weapon can successfully engage heavy power armor-clad infantry, light vehicles, and targets protected by exotic materials the likes of beskar and phrik. Even in the event that penetration fails, the projectile can impart blunt kinetic force on impact, generating concussive waves of overpressure that can shatter bones, rupture organs, and ruin components.

While slug weapons are often viewed as unconventional in a modern battlespace where energy weapons reign supreme, the KSMG-8A holds its own due to its fast fire rate, excellent stopping power, and compact frame.

Still, the KSMG-8A has limitations that weigh consideration. Its magazines are larger and heavier than comparative blaster pistol-scale power scales, limiting how the amount of ammunition can be carried. The recoil mitigating inertia damper is a single point of failure, the failure of which could cause the weapon to become uncontrollable. Finally, while the weapon fires its projectile at hypersonic speeds, the effective range is limited by poor accuracy past 600 meters.

Nevertheless, the KSMG-8A is hoped to offer an exciting weapon platform to arm select agents of the Kainate, giving them an option with stealth capability and firepower superior to the more common KSMG-7 Mk. II. The KSMG-8A is anticipated to bolster the effectiveness of the Kainate’s loyal soldiers, agents, and combatants with a weapon option that is just as mobile and unassuming as it is terrifying and deadly.

  • Operational Modes
    • Mode 1: Low Observability
      • The default, low-power mode. The shell is configured to absorb and scatter incoming sensor energy, providing a general reduction in the craft's signature across all spectra. As a result, the craft becomes harder to detect. This mode is typically used during transit, patrol, and approach phases where maintaining a low profile is prioritized over active deception.
      • By visual observation, the craft’s silhouette appears hazy. This can make visual identification and range estimation difficult. Against the backdrop of space, the craft blends more readily with the darkness, appearing as a faint, indistinct shape rather than a clearly defined object.
    • Mode 2: Face Dancer
      • The shell actively cycles between absorptive, reflective, and diffusive states, creating a chaotic, unpredictable signature that can defeat targeting locks. In this, enemy targeting computers receive a flickering, nonsensical dataset. Lock-on becomes virtually impossible, and even manual gunnery is made exceptionally difficult.
      • As the shell actively cycles its properties, the visual effect becomes more dramatic. The craft can appear as a shimmering warp that constantly shifts and ripples as if its surface is made of liquid or flowing energy. Edges waver and distort, making it difficult to determine the craft's exact shape, size, or orientation. It can also appear as a morphing silhouette as its outline changes unpredictably. One moment it may appear elongated, the next squat and wide. This can prevent visual identification and make manual targeting exceptionally difficult. Finally, the craft can appear as a flickering displacement in which its apparent position may seem to jump slightly, as if the eye cannot settle on a fixed location. This creates a disorienting effect for any gunner attempting to lead the target.
    • Mode 3: False Identity
      • The shell projects a specific, high-fidelity false signature that mimics a different craft type, debris, or a friendly vessel. This is designed to force misidentification of the craft, potentially ignoring it or allocating resources incorrectly. In tactical contexts, this may be used for Infiltration, false-flag operations, or strategic deception.
      • In this mode, the shell projects a coherent false image over the craft. A Sestina starfighter may appear as a civilian shuttle, a freighter, or an entirely different starfighter type. The projected image is extremely convincing at range and up close, with accurate details such as markings, windows, visible hull wear, engine configurations, and yet more represented. The shell can also project false markings, insignia, or identification numbers. This mode can encompass camouflage as well, in which the projected image blends with the surrounding environment, making the craft difficult to distinguish from its background. Against a planet's surface, the craft may appear to match the terrain; against a starfield, it can blend with the stars.
    • Mode 4: Mirage Swarm
      • The shell splinters its manipulation, creating the appearance of multiple targets surrounding the craft. As a result, the enemy may see a swarm of contacts, forcing them to split fire or waste ammunition on phantoms. This is most often used for breaking missile locks, confusing point-defense systems, or covering an escape.
      • This mode multiplies the visual effect. In this, the shell can generate multiple images of false craft around the real craft. The false images can appear to break formation, dive, maneuver independently, or even open fire drawing the eye and attention away from the real craft.
    • Mode 5: Disruption Pulse
      • The shell generates a sudden, intense burst of multi-spectral energy, designed to temporarily overload enemy sensors. Designed to work against sensors in a manner akin to a flashbang grenade against vision, balance, and hearing, the disruption pulse has a very high chance of saturating and overloading sensors, giving the craft multispectrum cover during the burst.
      • As this mode projects a brief active emission, it is the only exception to the passive manipulation principle that underlies all other operational modes. However, the burst is extremely short (milliseconds) and omnidirectional.
      • The disruption pulse generates a brief but intense visual effect as the shell emits a sudden, intense burst of light across multiple spectra. The flash is bright enough to temporarily dazzle unprotected eyes and overwhelm optical sensors. It should be noted that burst includes non-visible spectra as well, affecting sensor systems that rely on visual data.
  • Utility Systems
    • Self-Diagnostics and Health Monitoring Suite
      • A network of passive sensors distributed throughout the field projector nodes continuously monitors each node's structural integrity, field generation stability, and thermal performance. The system can identify failing or degraded nodes in real-time, isolate them from the network, and report their status to the oversight Prism Core.     • Node Calibration and Self-Alignment Routine
      • Over time, field projector nodes can drift from their calibrated output frequencies due to thermal cycling, vibration, or mechanical stress.
