The air hit her first crisp and biting, a breath of ice that settled in her lungs like a warning and a promise. Midvinter was like that, she figured. Brutal and beautiful in the same breath. Vess adjusted the collar of her coat and stepped down from the transport, her boots crunching into snow with a satisfying weight.

This wasn't the kind of place she usually ended up. Not unless someone was trying to kill her in the woods or trade something illegal in a frozen village with bad lighting. But this this was different. The trees weren't hiding snipers, and the smoke curling from the fires wasn't from a scorched safehouse.
There was laughter. The scent of real food. People. Not all of them Jedi. Not all of them rebels. Just… people. That was new.

She pulled her gloves tighter and took a slow look at the setup the fire pits glowing in the snowbanks, the tables piled with food, the flicker of lights strung between trees like somebody actually believed in the holiday. Connel had outdone himself. Of course he had.
She spotted a few familiar faces already, exchanging gifts, snowballs, or both. For once, she didn't hang back.

Vess didn't glide into the gathering like some mysterious shadow. She walked in with purpose, her chin up, coat lined in light wool but open enough to show a splash of color underneath something new, for once. A dark forest green tunic with subtle embroidered patterns along the edges, a nod to Life Day without going full pageantry. Practical pants. Still boots. She wasn't crazy.

When someone greeted her, she greeted them back. Simple. A few brief exchanges. A quiet smile here and there. No snark. No side-eyes. She even took a plate, though she picked at it more than ate.

Because the truth was, she didn't feel like she was pretending anymore.

Valery had told her once the galaxy wasn't just made of battlegrounds and broken systems. It had places like this. Nights like this. People who chose to be better not because they had to, but because they could.

She still didn't know if she belonged in that kind of story.

But tonight? She could stand in it.

Vanagor Homestead - Just outside Heavenheim

While Mother walked over and gave Thurion Heavenshield Thurion Heavenshield a huge hug and managed to tell him for the both of them that Katarine Ryiah and Connel Vanagor were a thing. Connel just sighed and smirked at her. They hadn’t had that conversation yet, looks like they didn’t need to. Who’s hungry?

As he was putting plates together of Nerf Burgers, Ronto ribs and the like, not to mention veggies that work with this sort of meal, Connel noticed a Padawan who had just shown up looking around. He recognized her, Vess Sadragen Vess Sadragen , they had never met, but she was welcome.

Hey there. I’m Connel, Connel Vanagor. This is my mother’s homestead. Welcome… come eat and have fun. He then had to quickly react, lightly clapping her shoulder and pushing her down as he did as well. They both ducked a snowball from a giggling Michael Angellus.

Boy! Don’t make me show you what’s up!

Then once everything was looking good he spoke up loud again.Come eat! Then he looked at Chrysa, she seemed to know what he was going to ask, smiled, and nodded her head.

So he took his drink and hopped up on a chair for a toast, “My father used to say that a full house was proof you were doing something right…

I didn’t understand that when I was younger…I do now.

This year tried to take a lot from all of us…
It didn’t take this.
Holding his hands out to gesture to everyone.

Thank you for coming home… And to the fact that we’re still here… together. This year asked more of us than it had any right to.

Some answered and didn’t come back.
Some answered and are still standing.

To family… and to keeping the lights on.

"Jair," Jax said leaning against his wife's touch. "I'm not cut out for these fancy parties. I'm always afraid that I'm going to say the wrong thing. I've told you many times that I always liked hanging out in the rough and tumble edges in Coruscant."

A wave of nostalgia came over Jax, he missed the lower levels of Courscant. So much fun and adventure then again looking back, Jax also recalled the fact that he made a lot of dumb decisions that often led to him or his friends in trouble. "I stay for you Jair," Jax whispered. "You never liked it whenever I go out in the Galaxy to help others. Just thinking about it, it's selfish of me to constantly risk my life while you have to make huge adjustments."

He didn't trust the Diarchy, that much he made clear to Jair but it was decision to help them and Jax respected it. "Soooo," a grin spread across Jax's face. "Is there any Wine here? I'm fracking thirsty!"

Overhearing Jax. Connel pointed to the porch. Reds are up there. Whites are in the kitchen.

His mother gave him a smirk. Don’t mess up the place or she’ll kill me. He chuckled.

The snowball fight was fun, but eventually Connel raised a glass and called everyone in to eat. The roughhousing had worked up quite an appetite, so Alison drifted over to the table and helped herself. Everything looked delicious.

For the moment, she was content to eat and people-watch. Afterward, she settled into a chair, a pleasant heaviness creeping over her as the warmth of the meal sank in. It was relaxing, exactly the kind of comfort a day off was meant for.

She might just drift off right there in the chair.

"These are your people around us," Jairdain said quietly, her voice calm but firm. "Not mine. I came because you invited me… and now you sound as though you would rather be anywhere else."

She shifted slightly closer to him, not to argue, but to make sure he felt the truth of what followed.

"I know you don't always approve of my choices in life," she continued, evenly. "And I am aware that I don't always approve of yours either. That has never been a secret between us." A brief pause, then softer. "But disagreement is not distance."

Her hand found his, steady and familiar.

"We are happy," Jairdain said simply. "And I love you, Jax."

"I know," Jax said with a hint of irritation in his voice. "We're here to relax and to meet up with Connel Vanagor Connel Vanagor but still that doesn't I can't express my displeasure Jair. Can I at least do that?"

The Jedi Master sighed, the two of them were different in their approaches. Jair enjoyed negotiating while Jax felt like the best course of action was through the Lightsaber. Peace through superior firepower and all that. That was always a source of tension between the two even after they were married. When Alliance fell, Jax couldn't help but join the remaining NJO and try to take the fight back to the Sith. He knew Jair wouldn't like it, but Jax already tried settling down.

"You're right," Jax smiled cupping Jair's cheek. "A relationship without warts is pure fantasy. In fact, it's those imperfections that make our love even stronger." He pressed his lips against Jair's. "No matter where I go," he whispered in her ear. "I'll always love you."

Jairdain let out a quiet breath, not quite a sigh, and leaned into his touch rather than away from it. His irritation was familiar to her, not unwelcome, simply part of who he was, and she had long since stopped trying to sand it down into something else.

"You can express your displeasure," she said gently, her voice calm but honest. "I have never asked you to be silent. Only mindful of where that fire is pointed."

Her hand came up to rest over his wrist, anchoring rather than restraining.

"We have always approached the galaxy from different directions," Jairdain continued. "You step forward, blade first. I step forwar,d listening. Neither of us is wrong, only incomplete on our own." A faint smile touched her lips. "And we have both learned more by standing side by side than we ever would have alone."

When he cupped her cheek, she turned her face slightly into his palm, eyes soft.

"I do not need you to become someone else," she said quietly. "And I will never ask you to stop caring fiercely, even when it frightens me. I support you as you support me, sometimes by agreeing, sometimes by standing firm when we do not."

She leaned in, resting her forehead briefly against his.

"We can disagree," Jairdain said, warmth steady beneath the words. "And still choose each other. Every time."

Then, with a small, amused huff that eased the weight between them, she squeezed his hand.

"Come," she added. "Let us go find our friend before you decide to start a philosophical argument with the wine."
