Public Jade v Pantora: Testimony of Caltin Vanagor

Shadows of Redemption: Jade v. Pantora
Caltin's Testimony

Cortana_Div.png

Pantora

The high-profile trial of Romi Jade, a revered Jedi Master turned alleged perpetrator of war crimes, and now a fugitive, commences on the planet of Pantora. The legal stage is set for a dramatic and unprecedented event as Caltin Vanagor, called as a character witness, begins to unveil his testimony. Legal officials and counsel have called for the proceedings to be continued in absentia, and prosecution has called for no more evidence to be admitted to the court. The process continues, and starts with the subpoena of character witnesses.

-----

The courtroom on Pantora buzzed with anticipation as Jedi Master Caltin Vanagor Caltin Vanagor was called to the stand. As he approached, the air seemed to hold a certain tension, amplified by the media's attentive gaze.

The prosecuting attorney, the stern Pantoran legal expert, Shara Dal'Von stood before the court. Her opening statement carried an air of authority. "Ladies and gentlemen, today we bring forth Jedi Master Caltin Vanagor as a witness to shed light on the true nature of Romi Jade's redemption...or lack thereof. Today, was supposed to be the continuation of Jade's testimony that started on Coruscant, but where is Romi Jade today? Ladies and gentlemen of the assembly, and all present, while we explore this critical chapter in the life of a Jedi Master, we cannot ignore the events that transpired since our last session. Master Jade, once entrusted with the sacred duty of a Jedi, chose to evade accountability, becoming a fugitive from justice. Her deliberate absence raises questions not only about her individual actions but also about the Jedi Order's responsibility to ensure accountability within its ranks. As we delve into the details, I invite you to consider the implications of a Jedi who, when faced with the prospect of answering for her actions, chose to forsake the principles she once vowed to uphold. We aim to uncover whether her former association with the Sith Empire continues to pose a threat, and if her past actions within the Jedi community warrant further scrutiny."

The defense attorney, Taryn Kyrel, rose with determination in his eyes. "Your Honors, we call Jedi Master Caltin Vanagor to testify not just as a witness but as a character witness who has seen the journey of redemption undertaken by Romi Jade personally. Through his testimony, we aim to showcase the strength of her commitment to the Jedi way and her sincere efforts to overcome the shadows of her past. Honored members of the court, our esteemed jury, and those gathered here, we approach this trial not to contest accountability but to provide a comprehensive perspective on a Jedi Master's actions. Master Jade, in her endeavors, has consistently shown dedication to justice, often at great personal risk. The events in question transpired during a period of galactic turmoil, and Master Jade's choices were shaped by the complex circumstances surrounding her. As for her absence is still under investigation, much like this trial, I urge you keep an open mind and be aware of the complexities that intertwine with subjects such as these. I'm certain we will demonstrate that her actions, while not conventional, were driven by a commitment to protecting innocent lives"

Be careful what you wish for.
  1. Master Jedi, thank you for agreeing to appear. If we could start, could you share your observations of Romi Jade's character during your collaborative efforts?
Be it against the Bryn’adul, against the Brotherhood of the Maw, or teaching Padawans how to levitate an item, her character has been professional, personable and nothing short of inspiring.

“Inspiring?”
Yes, she has been an example of what the younger generation should strive to be. Not perfect, but trying to always be and do better. She has a "celebrity" about her and it does not affect or influence her.

  1. As a trusted friend, did you witness any moments where Romi Jade exhibited unwavering commitment to Jedi principles, even in challenging situations?
Yes, even when I did not.

“When you did not?”
The aforementioned Bryn’adul. During an invasion, one of their leaders broke the spine of Master Ala Quin Ala Quin , a Jedi to whom I have known since my time as a Padawan. Another time of many was during the sacking of the Enclave on Jakku run by her by the Brotherhood of the Maw. Even Jedi falter from time to time, but she has always proven to be a prime example.

  1. Were there instances where Romi Jade actively sought to reconcile or make amends for her past actions as a Dark Shadow Hand?
Redemption is a journey, not a transaction. Jedi are always on the approach to make the future better. Using the past as a resource but not letting it define you. So I would have to say that everything she does is to make the galaxy a better place. If she considered herself above reproach, would she have cooperated here?

  1. A fair observation. In your opinion, did Romi Jade's involvement in the Silver Jedi Order contribute positively to the organization, and did she actively work towards the greater good?
Again, every move and decision she has made, has been to provide a better existence for others around her, and as a whole.

  1. During the plea for aid to Coruscant, did you witness any reservations or reluctance from Romi Jade that might suggest a hidden agenda or malicious intent?
Not at all. She works hard to keep not only everyone around her safe, but prepared for the times she herself cannot be there. She works tirelessly for people as a whole, not just colleagues.

“‘Not just colleagues…’ are Jedi not worth protecting?”
Not what I am saying. A Jedi’s life is about sacrifice, our ‘job’ you might say is to put ourselves between the innocent and the danger that those who wish harm would bring.

“Sounds like a thankless job.”
We’re not in it for fame or fortune.

  1. Caltin, if I could call you ‘Caltin’, could you elaborate on the circumstances surrounding Romi Jade's plea for aid to Coruscant and the subsequent collaboration between the Silver Jedi Order and the New Jedi Order?
She was on a quest to request aid from Jedi outside the system not only for the historical aspect of the Jedi Temple on Coruscant as well as the planet as a whole, but the fact that the planet itself is home to billions. Not to mention the fact that the Megalopolis is a center of commerce for hundreds of planets as well. At the time there was not a very good relationship between the Silver Jedi Concord and the New Jedi Order as a whole, but in the end she knew that we are all “Jedi” and that is what should matter. She was, and is right.

  1. In your opinion, given the context, did Romi Jade actively seek redemption and work towards becoming a positive force within the Jedi community during her time with the Silver Jedi Order? Do you believe that is enough compensation?
Again, “Redemption is not a transaction”, Jedi are not infallible as no one is in general. Anyone who is looking for “enough compensation” or even making amends in specifics is missing the point. Doing and being better is important, but doing so simply to make another satisfied will never truly be “enough compensation.”

  1. Were there moments where Romi Jade demonstrated resilience and determination in overcoming her past and contributing positively to the Jedi cause?
Every day of her life. However not specifically to be recognized but simply because it is the right thing to do.

  1. Can you share any specific examples of Romi Jade's commitment to the Jedi Code and principles, especially in situations where adherence to these values might have been challenging?
The attack on the Jakku Enclave, the attack on the Library on Ossus, the attempted Annihilation of Tython. Each one of those were times when the destruction, the loss of life, the overall sense of hopelessness was prevalent, she like any Jedi refused to give up. We did not win the day on Jakku or Ossus, but she did not give up, she picked up the pieces, kept morale up for those around her and moved forward. If she didn’t, I do not think that we would have had as many Jedi defending Tython as we did.

  1. As a character witness, do you believe that Romi Jade's past mistakes should define her entire legacy, or should her subsequent actions and redemption be taken into account?
I think that her past indiscretions should never be forgotten, but neither should the work she has put in since. Romi has been nothing short of a pillar of the Jedi, no matter the Order, her, Coren Starchaser Coren Starchaser , Thurion Heavenshield Thurion Heavenshield , and so many others have done so much for the galaxy. I am not absolving her, or anyone of past actions, however she deserves a fair trial, not the treatment she is getting today in this sideshow.

“Objection! Move to strike as argumentative!” The Prosecutor jumped out of his chair.

“Thank you, I have nothing further.” The Defense Attorney quipped as he stepped back to his table.

“The Prosecution may cross-examine” the judge remarked.

The cavernous assembly hall within the Jakku Jedi Enclave resembled a waste reclamation facility more so than any grand sacred hall or chamber in any modern Jedi temple. The subdued hum of a small gathering of Jedi echoed off the rough-hewn stone walls, creating an atmosphere charged with a mix of anticipation and apprehension. The flickering glow of spotlights accentuated the vibrant hues of the Chagrian Jedi Master Tarrlok's skin as he stepped forward, commanding attention.

He had called on any senior Jedi Knights and Masters for an assembly of such...and conveniently when Master Caltin Vanagor was on Pantora to give his testimony; he was out of the Chagrian's way for now. The Jakku Jedi Enclave never had a stringent hierarchy, or council of any kind. Beyond it's headmaster, any Jedi who came through here either for training or work were able to give their voice and opinions.

The air in the subterranean enclave was tinged with the scent of sand and the echoes of countless whispered conversations. Tarrlok, with his brusque manner and calculated words, cast a large shadow against the dimly lit backdrop. The assembly hall, a nexus of wisdom and decision-making, seemed to hold its breath, awaiting the revelation of the enclave's fate.

"As we stand here in the heart of our enclave," Tarrlok's voice resonated, "we cannot ignore the uncertainty that engulfs us. The absence of Master Romi Jade leaves us at a crossroads, and the mantle of leadership weighs heavy on our shoulders. I wanted to throw the topic out for discussion since no one else has..."

His eyes, sharp and perceptive, secretly scrutinized the gathered. The Chagrian's calculated words hinted at a genuine concern for the enclave's future, but the shadow of manipulation lurked beneath the surface; only he knew. The tapestries seemed to sway in response, as if whispering secrets of their own.

"In considering our options, we must prioritize the stability of this facility and the welfare of our students," Tarrlok continued, "It is imperative that we navigate these uncertain times with wisdom and unity. Something Jade, herself, was known to push for."

Subtle glances were exchanged. The mood in the hall, once charged with anticipation, began to shift. Tarrlok's carefully chosen words cast a subtle spell, weaving an illusion of concern while sowing seeds of doubt about Lossa Darcuhl's capability to lead.

"As we deliberate on the path forward," Tarrlok concluded, "let us remember that our legacy is intertwined with the conversations we make today. The Jakku Jedi Enclave must stand resolute, a bastion of strength in the face of adversity."

The hall, now shrouded in a nuanced atmosphere of tension, held its collective breath. Tarrlok's presence lingered, leaving the Jedi to grapple with the shadows of uncertainty that had taken root within the enclave's subterranean chambers. The legacy of Romi Jade, now a specter in their midst, awaited a new chapter guided by the enigmatic Chagrian Jedi Master.

" Lossa Darcuhl Lossa Darcuhl is merely a Padawan, do we believe she has the capacity to take on the burden of leading this place on her own? Nothing like this has ever been heard of...I worry for her." the end of it sounded heavy indeed. One would think he truly was concerned for her well-being. "And Briana Sal-Soren Briana Sal-Soren helping her-I...she seems distracted nowadays. I only wish to discuss the matter and glean from a collective of wisdom and perspective, as open dialogue has always been treasured here in these walls."

Being a Master of an official Order was a little weird to Katarine. She had been mastered very shortly before Order 66 had occurred so her masterly duties of attending meetings, guiding the future of the establishment and the like were never really that heavy. She had trained several padawans and tried to continue the Jedi tradition of course, but with all the Jedi terminated there was no Council to sit on, no Order to run, and no meetings like this to attend. Now after being unfrozen Katarine found herself smack dab in the middle of a bustling galaxy full of Jedi. It was a nice change but it did have its downsides. She worried she might not be that good at this part of being a Jedi Master.

The other downside was politics. Katarine hated politicians and she hated politics, and today was dripping with both. Even if they were all Jedi in the room she could feel the unease that started as soon as Master Tarrlok spoke. People would wonder if this was a bid for power, and given the events of the past when power grabs happened who could blame them? Master Tarrlok seemed genuinely concerned however. Either way the subtle shifts in power, the strategy needed to understand who was on your side, the sense to know when to speak and how to do so diplomatically without adding to the tension, it was all politics and Katarine loathed every second of it. She did however want to give her service to the Enclave. After being unfrozen on Naboo she had endured three years of combating the long term hibernation sickness effects. Master Jade's training programs had helped Katarine through physical therapy and her time at the Jakku Enclave had been highly responsible for Kat being able to walk again. That was a debt one did not just forget.

The issue here was complex, especially because Katarine was still learning how things were situated in the galaxy in this timeline. As far as she could tell the main hub of the Jedi seemed to be The New Jedi Order. That was where a traditional Council sat and was allied with The Galactic Alliance, which seemed to be a sort of version of the Republic, including a Senate. What was odd was that although most of the Jedi seemed to serve the New Jedi Order, that Council wasn't in charge of every Jedi establishment. There were separate Jedi groups that didn't seem to be under the guidance of the New Jedi Order at all, even if they were on friendly terms and often worked together. She knew of a few of them from her study in the archives, such as the Prime Jedi Conclave, and of course the Jakku Jedi Enclave. There were others she knew little about such as the Vonnuvi Jedi Enclave, and the Silver Jedi who seemed to have retreated somewhere or were no longer actively engaging the galaxy. The Silver Jedi had several councils, like the Jedi of old but again they did not seem to oversee the rest of the Jedi at all. Then there were fringe group of those who followed the lightside but were not Jedi. It seemed as if the Jedi were splintered but on good terms. Katarine knew that in the days of the Old Republic there were enclaves put up to focus on training small batches of padawans throughout the galaxy, but she assumed one council had overseen all of those back in the day. That didn't seem to be the case here. The galaxy seemed full of several Jedi groups who all had different leadership but similar goals. There were of course downsides and upsides to this.

Smaller enclaves did mean that more attention could be given to individual students. Katarine had recieved care here that she knew the New Jedi Order might be too busy to accomodate. Smaller establsihments also meant that more Jedi could hold influence and be heard in times like this meeting. The downsides of course was that when something happened to an enclave's leadership that did not recognize an official ruling council there was a bit of chaos left as leadership structure got figured out. From what Katarine knew of Romi Jade she realized that Master Jade did not have any ill desire towards the New Jedi Order. In fact Master Jade often preached unity within the Jedi ranks. It was obvious that entrusting the Enclave to a padawan was meant to further Lossa's training, which Katarine supported. She wondered if perhaps Romi would object to the Jedi establishments growing closer together and sharing leadership like that had in the old days. She did not want to suggest this of course, at least not yet. Katarine wanted to really understand the situation more. She also wanted to know what the purpose of the Jakku Enclave was. It seemed to center around training and teaching and if so then Romi's lessons left behind should suffice. Perhaps Tarrlok wanted to move the Enclave into a more active position in the galaxy howwever? She felt out of sorts without this information and wasn't sure if she should ask for it yet. Katarine was not an elegant politician and did not want to stir the pot before she let the others have a say.

Judah was not sure why he had been summoned to give voice to something he had not been involved in, but it seemed that his perspective was wanted. Many considered him to be jaded and cynical.

He was.

Too much had happened, and too much life had been lived. Those who had once called themselves friends long abandoned him for their own agenda. Even in this setting one thing was abundantly clear.

The Jedi had become far more political than they needed to be.

Was Judah concerned about who was in power, or in control? To a certain measure he was. The master was old enough, and wise enough, to believe any amount of spin given to place Jedi in positions of authority they had no business being in. Were it up to him, that would never happen, and that was the rub.

Judah had never wanted it to be up to him. He had never sat on a council of any kind, nor did he want to. The Jedi was more concerned with results and action than sitting in a room for pointless discussions. Like the one which it seemed was happening here. At least Judah was listening. He was listening to what was not being said, at least directly.

When it was quiet, Judah took his turn.

“Let me guess… you would suggest that you yourself should provide the stability and security of this Enclave?” His question was blunt, but Judah was never one to mince his words nor hide behind colorful and empty platitudes to disguise an insult. “We are here to guide. We are here to teach. We are here to defend these students if need be. We did not come here to lead. In Romi’s absence nothing changes.”

MEANWHILE ON PANTORA...

The Prosecutor walked out from his table to the center of the frontal area, eyes on Vanagor for a moment before walking in an almost non-chalant circle.

  1. Jedi Vanagor, considering Romi Jade's past association with the Sith Empire, do you believe her redemption is genuine, or is there a risk of relapse?
Have you done something in your past that you are not proud of? Yes, I do believe that she is and forever will be working towards redemption.

  1. You have a history with the old Silver Jedi, in your role on the Silver Jedi Council, were you aware of any instances where Romi Jade's actions could be interpreted as a threat to the stability of the Order?
No, if she did not want to do something, she didn’t. There has also been a long period of war, so threats to stability were at a premium. She did not let any of this change her though.

  1. Given your close association with Romi Jade, can you honestly, objectively attest to any specific instances where she exhibited a lack of control over her emotions, especially those associated with the dark side of the Force?
The closest thing to what you are wanting would be her remorse over all that was lost at the Jakku Enclave. All of the work she had done to establish it was lost in a flash, but again she picked up and moved forward, like anyone else in her place would have done.

“So, she exhibited Dark Side emotions that day?”
Your twisting my words, she was remorseful for what was lost.

“Sounds like an attachment. Don’t Jedi consider attachments a part of the Dark Side? Or will that add to the "sideshow" you think that this is?”
Have you ever been in a speeder accident? Lost a job? A friend? It’s naive to think that attachments in some way shape or form do not happen, even with Jedi. Not having an attachment is impossible, letting it define you is the issue.

“Yes, getting back to that, you would know about that, what with your fall to the Dark Side against the Bryn’adul.”

“Objection! Argumentative!” Taryn raised a hand.

“I’ll reword. What happened to you that day?”
I witnessed a ten foot Draelvaser snap the spine of a Jedi to whom I had known and formed a close bond with ever since our time in the old Republic. I momentarily lost control of my emotions, and I paid the price for it as well. It was a testament to keeping control of yourself in combat. Again, I will say that Jedi are not perfect, we make mistakes from time to time as well, but we, like anyone else who wishes to better themselves learn from it.

“So what you are saying is that Jedi are ticking time bombs. That you are no different from the Sith you claim to protect us from? How can we take your credibility as a character witness at face value when you admit to losing control so easily?”
No, again I am saying that even Jedi are not infallible. Do you know what we do? Do you really know? The Force is not some magic power, it flows through everything and every one of us. You included. Some can commune with the Force, some cannot, it is as simple as that. It is our choices that make us who we are. That is what separates a Jedi from a Sith, not the Dark Side, not the Light Side, our choices. You can belittle Master Jade, Master Starchasers, myself, or anyone attune to the Force, but in the end we will still be there to stand in front of you should you fall on the Sith’s radar. It is the right thing to do, that is what we strive for, it’s all any of us have ever arrived for

“If your own Code says you cannot feel emotions, but you can’t…”
The original Jedi Tenets decree that emotions are going to happen. Every Jedi knows this and will feel them from time to time, but not to let those emotions control or define you.

  1. Did Romi Jade ever express resentment or hostility towards the Jedi Order or its principles during her time in the Silver Jedi Order?

“Objection!”

No, I will answer this. She has never expressed hostility towards anyone, even in a combat situation. She stood to defend herself and others, to be sure, but never maliciously or any hostile intent. She is a Jedi after all.

  1. As a witness, can you provide insight into any questionable decisions or actions taken by Romi Jade during her service as a Jedi, either within the Silver Jedi Order or during collaborative efforts?
Honestly, I questioned her willingness to be openly willing to answer questions in open court like this. However that speaks to her sincerity towards peace and accepting responsibility to and for her past. It has been my experience that anyone who feels that they are above reproach would not be so willing to answer your questions without hesitation as she did.

"Yet she isn't here. Escaped custody and on the run. Yet you make comments about her morality..."

“Objection!”

"Sustained!" shouted the judge.

"I'll reword. You state that she is willing to cooperate, and for awhile that was true, you have stated on record that she is of high moral fiber. Yet she has proven unwilling to even return. Don't you feel your faith in her a little shaken?"

What I have seen to this point is nothing more than circumstancial evidence or accusations without any context. If she is guilty, then she is guilty, but I will not simply jump to conclusions, no matter the direction a trial goes until the final verdict is rendered. There are Jedi who have already made the assumption she is guilty I'm sure, and that is fine, they are entitled to their opinion. However she is not "guilty until proven innocent" no matter what some may wish.

"Jedi, do you know how Due Process works?" The prosecutor asked smugly.

Do YOU?

As much of the audience began to gasp and murmur, the judge called for order as the Prosecutor angrily called out.

"Objection, move to strike his comments."

"Counselor, YOU are the one questioning him." The judge almost laughed him off.

  1. Take us back and give us context surrounding the plea/request Romi Jade made to the Silver Jedi Council leading up to the attack on Coruscant, and can you speak to, that as a member of the Silver Jedi Council, if you had any reservations or concerns about aiding someone with Romi Jade's history?
Aiding a Jedi? Aiding my fellow Jedi? No, I had no reservations, I had no concerns. She was in need of aid, and I responded. That is what we do. That is the life of the Jedi. My fellow Council Members chose not to respond out of concern of leaving Concord Space unprotected, but I was left open and available. I was born on Coruscant, and have history from the Old Republic and Jedi Order, I was going even if Romi did not ask.

  1. Can you speak to any instances where Romi Jade exhibited behavior inconsistent with Jedi principles during your time with her in the Silver Jedi Order?
Jedi Principles when I was Knighted? Yes, Jedi did not marry back then, unless they were both in the Order and rarely worked together. Now? Current time? No. Again, she is a Jedi I have come to admire.

  1. Were there any specific warnings or red flags raised by Romi Jade in the time you knew and worked with her, following the events on Rhen Var and Pantora, that could have hinted at her potential redemption being something of a sham, false?
I have already answered this question, twice. She is an honorable person and fine Jedit and a pillar of the Order. She is what many Jedi hope to be one day.

  1. Did Romi Jade ever express any unusual affiliations or alliances that might have been perceived as a deviation from Jedi teachings?
For the fourth time. No.

"If you're not going to answer my questions... at least explain why the very Enclave she is rebuilding is being operated by children while she is gone?"

I've answered every question you have asked. In regards to the Enclave, she chose those who would be able to take care of the say to day in a manner consistent with her training and would teach them leadership skills at the same time. They are not "children" and there are Masters who are present, they are, or should be, there to offer consultation and words of encouragement when and where needed. I will be there myself when I am excused from the proceedings here.

"Then I guess I have nothing further."

The open air meeting wasn't something Lossa was against. She'd been pondering much the same idea for a while now, failing to make it happen with her own indecisive brooding. This though, with the trial going on at the same time, felt like something more. She just couldn't put her finger on why it felt insincere.

At least not until there was mention of leadership and the concern of their way forward.

Without realizing it, she wore a frown and stared at Tarrlok, waiting for his practiced words to come to an end. There was a net of safety regarding the leadership of the Enclave. It wasn't as if she alone was deciding the course the Enclave would take. The Master's that called this place their home had been informed of the the circumstances, and while some had been less than pleased, she had made it clear she would seek out their help or opinions.

Or perhaps that was why Tarrlok now brought up the matter, feeling that the need to speak with others was a downfall rather than a boon.

The quiet broken after Tarrlok's words by Master Lesan. Who seemed extremely annoyed by the topic. Sharp and unwilling to play at pretty words. A quiet appreciation from the Zeltron as he spoke, even if it wasn't defending her.

Would she have remained with the Alliance if he had been her master? An idle thought she pushed aside as he finished speaking, letting it end with a statement of their purpose. Affirming that Master Lesan was someone she could rely on for honesty if nothing else.

The beat of quiet once more broken as Lossa let herself be heard.

"This Enclave exists because of Romi's determination. These halls have been rebuilt by many hands and many here helped in that process." Putting her hand on her hip as she spoke loud and clear.

"I am a padawan, yes. I am definitely not prepared as someone like Master Lesan or yourself, Master Tarrlok. But the point of this Enclave isn't about the leadership." Letting her eyes wander over the gathering around her before continuing to speak.

"This is a place to learn, to grow, make friends, make mistakes. Because that's what everyone does. We have plenty of Master's around to make sure that we are secure and to keep us safe." Using her hand to punctuate her points before letting it settle back on her hip.

"The Master's are also helping me to lead us forward because yes, I don't know as much as they do. But no one does because we all have our own experiences. I am not leading this place alone, everyone here has a say, because this is our home. And everyone should be heard." She had been holding back on making a meeting such as this happen until she felt more comfortable. Had been waiting for what felt like the right moment, but the right moment was made she realized.

Not found.

"This Enclave, after all, is just one of many. It is a branch of the Alliance. Romi has always advocated for unity across the jedi. And I want us to be a beacon of that unity by working together, along with other Enclaves and groups to learn and grow on top of what we are all able to learn here." Bringing her own ideas out into the light. Not meaning to make a grand speech of it, but feeling spurned on and pushed into a corner by Tarrlok had brought a touch of indignation out.

"Romi was able to give us a place to learn, to live, and gave us the tools to grow. It's up to all of us to live up to some of her examples moving forward." She finished speaking, fixing her gaze onto Tarrlok after giving the hall a final sweep with her eyes.

Others were less hesitant to speak as Katarine and this was probably a good thing. They knew the galaxy and this time better than she. Master Lesan was someone Kat had never met but she felt a wave of appreciation for the man as he spoke. He wasn’t afraid of his words and he wasn’t playing the game of politics. It broke the ice and set the stage that this was a meeting not a game. She liked that.

When Padawan Lossa spoke Kat could feel the slight indignation behind the words. Honestly she couldn’t blame the woman for feeling that way and already this lesson designed by Romi was teaching the padawan. If what the Zeltronian woman said was true and this enclave was a branch of The Alliance then that meant the members here would not shy away from the oversight of the New Jedi Order. They were hardly all on their own, meaning this meeting was most certainly a power grab. The thought made Kats stomach tighten in knots.

“I think padawan Darcuhl makes an excellent point. This enclave was designed as primarily a learning establishment. The burden of leadership was designed as a teaching aid and we must trust that Master Jade knows how best to teach her students.”

Kat’s deep green eyes swept the room briefly as she spoke, coming to rest finally om Tarrlok himself.

“Master Tarrlok I am afraid I do not understand your concerns. This Enclave is on good terms with the New Jedi Order, and surely would not shy away from their Councils oversight if they sensed we were heading in the wrong direction. We have a group of masters here who call this place a home and oversee the training of all the students. Padawan Darcuhl has already said she is determined to continue to value the input of those masters. She recognizes her gap in knowledge and seems open to input and constructive feedback. We are all here to support her and we have The New Jedi Order willing to support us too. I do not mean to dismiss your claims but I fail to understand them. Could you tell us exactly what problems you foresee with the current situation? From where I am standing it seems Master Jade left things well handled.”

The Chagrian casually shook his lethorns, unbothered by the insult -- "I've made no such suggestion. This isn't a bid to go against Master Jade's wishes, and I fully understand my role in the cycle of things here...I'm merely opening up dialogue. Providing a space for us all to chime in. Lossa is a Padawan, and in our role to guide Master Lesan, I think it's fitting we come together and think up how we can make this transition easier on her..." He responded, bowing his head to feign respect, smirking on the way down.

Well, Master Lesan was out...and surely had some suspicion. Perhaps that would work in Tarrlok's favor.

"As I'm sure, this has been a lot on the young Darcuhl..."

Though something had pulled the attention of the room to Lossa, in the momentary beat, it seemed she was building the energy to speak. He hoped to glean what he could of her character...Though in some ways perhaps him calling this meeting was a way to glean a feeling on everyone; he had to know where and how to tread.

Not found.

Hmm, a very noble response. So she had something in her after all. Well, she could move a room at least.

Tarrlok nodded, and feigned admiration for Padawan Darcuhl's response. "If I may, Lossa, it brings me peace to hear that you are aware of what this place embodies, and that you don't intend to discard our voices in this process. Given everything that has transpired, I feel such dialogue is tricky but necessary, it wasn't my intention to air out your shortcomings by any means...it's because I care about the process here, and I worry for the burden on your shoulders. I merely want to help. As you've said, it is up to us."

He turned to Master Ryiah as she spoke.

"For that we can agree on Master Ryiah. I just don't want us to lose sight of her well-being in the process." he responded.

"Murky are the limitations of the reach of the New Jedi Orders Council here, should they ever wish to intervene, as Master Jade is, was, a Wayseeker. They do not answer to any council, it's my understanding that was one of the reasons for the foundation of this facility. However, I don't knock having them as a resource by any means.

I wouldn't say claims, but my concerns stemmed mostly from Padawan Darcuhl's rank, and experience. The same could be said for Sal-Soren, I know they were close mentees of Master Jade, but the burden of running this place can be a lot, and I only wanted to pose the topic as a way for us senior members to discuss how we can make this easier on them both.

There's quite a bit surrounding that Sal-Soren family, to which I dare not speak further, but Sal-Soren seems to have her hands full... Where is she now? And with Lossa, it merely all comes down to experience, the discernment to know...for I was informed that she recently accompanied a group of Padawans to the Wrecked Destiny Oasis, a site used for training once yes, but we've recently had a young Cerean student have a terrible experience as a result of being there...she was plagued by horrifying nightmares and hallucinations, so much so that she was transported to the temple on Coruscant for care...we've yet to determine if this was a isolated event...

Curious, how do you think we should proceed with this matter Padawan Darcuhl?"

"Just because a master is recognized as such doesn't mean they are fit to lead an enclave, anymore than just because someone is a Padawan doesn't mean they are not fit to be trusted with important tasks." Came a voice in the back.

It belonged to a rather abrasive, normally silent adult Padawan, considered a wayseeker in the Trade League Jedi (one for whom the unpleasant moniker of The Vulture had stuck due to his scavenging tendencies, as well as being a pragmatist who struck enemies opportunistically.)

Nathan Bloodscrawl was in the back, a new satellite member running and ferrying food and medicine to supply the enclave at his own initiative.

"It's awfully early, I say, to be calling into question Padawan Darcuhl's capabilities..." he spoke, stepping forward to face Tarrlok Tarrlok .

Nathan was as much a ghost as any Jedi Padawan could have been. No permanent residence beyond a ship. No records of him anywhere before being encountered by Jedi in a ruined temple on Sullust. Even the nature of how, exactly, he had come to be recruited by the NJO had become a mystery: the records had been hopelessly lost or perhaps mixed around in other files in the chaos following the end of the war with the Maw. Whoever had overseen his recruitment had apparently been killed in the final battle at Exogal, and even then it wasn't known which recruiter it had been. So he was just there ever since. Quiet. Observing.

"Should she not be given a chance to succeed or fail based on merit? And isn't this a bit improper, considering Master Caltin Vanagor Caltin Vanagor is not around to offer his input?" Nathan asked pointedly, movements stiff and mechanical.

He didn't have the serene look of a lot of the Jedi here. His face, as always, was frozen in a seemingly permanently grim countenance, like he had never had a happy day in his entire life. Some of the younger Padawans would joke out of earshot that he looked like he had been born grouchy.

"At the very least, Master Vanagor should be allowed a chance to return from his testimony so we can really start to have a decent discussion on the topic of who leads what, and what we should be doing. It should not be a place for some Master to start casting doubt on the people Master Jade trusted implicitly."

Jedi Wayseeker... that was a term Katarine had not heard in a long time. It had existed before Order 66 of course, but it had fallen out of fashion, or perhaps the Council had put a stop to the title. It appeared in this new timeline however there were many Jedi operating outside of a council. This thought made Katarine frown and stare at Tarrlok. Perhaps he was really just concerned about the well being and direction of the Enclave. Conversations like these always seemed sketchy but Katarine had to admit, it made her nervous that there were so many splinter groups of Jedi in the galaxy now, not to mention finding out that there were once again wayskeers who completely worked outside any governing body. Yes the Jedi Order had been rebuilt, but not entirely the same it seemed. It was a bit chaotic and honestly worrisome.

"I assume Master Jade was aware of the issues that Padawan Darcuhl was dealing with when the leadership was appointed. We have to trust Master Jade and her reasoning. She's done nothing to make us believe that trust is misplaced."

Another padawan spoke up, this one a very grouchy looking young man but he made excellent points. Katarine frowned again. She had never heard of Master Vanagor but it seemed incredibly odd that he was not here given Katarine was actually called here. Yes Kat had come to the Enclave to rest and take physical therapy but she truly did not know the ins and outs like some of the others did, and not as well as Master Vanagor if the grumpy padawan was to be believed. Why then was this meeting called at this time? Was it bad timing or something more? It was very hard to get a reading on Tarrlok, though he did seem somewhat genuine.

"Unless there is immediate concerns perhaps we should wait."

Judah listened as others gave their advice, and as each question was answered. He did not like what he sensed from the Chagrian, and much of it seemed to be around the aspect of making sure the masters held some level of control over the Enclave. There was nothing to be repeated that the other masters did not state, so for the moment the Shadow continued to listen. After all, his job was not to sit on a council of peers, but rather to root out dark side influences. It brought him much closer to it than he liked at times, but Judah had never once wavered in his commitment.

By the time the alien master spoke once more, his focus was again placed toward what seemed like an ill advised outing. The consensus seemed to be to give the Zeltron a chance to succeed, but the Chagrian continued to press the issue. He could deny that he was not trying to take control all he wanted, but his inability to accept the consensus for the time being spoke otherwise.

Why challenge it if he was not concerned about getting what he wanted?

“I believe it was Cortana who took that group of students with her, and they were accompanied by Master Vanagor’s son as well.”

Judah decided to address the accusation placed at the feet of the Sal-Soren girl. While she had been careless and brash as a padawan, she had learned her lesson. Judah wished to believe so, anyway.

“Jackson was among them as well,” he continued. “This Enclave has built on a learning style that is not strict, and the course of which is often determined by the students themselves. While the New Jedi Order is friendly with Master Jade, and willing to support, we teach differently here. We observe, and we guide. Nothing should be different in this situation. If there is something the young padawan here needs help with, we are here to advise.”

His eyes fixed on the Chagrian Master.

“That is how we ensure this enclave remains safe and secure. It does not lessen the fact all of us have the wellbeing of the students, and the future of the Jedi, at heart.”

She wasn't a senior member, but she'd been listening to the open assembly from the corridor...she clung to the lining of the stone wall, head hanging just over her shoulder when she heard the protest. She slinked her body around the corner, be remained flush with the length of the corridor, standing just enough to where the arch of the doorway hid her frame.

It made her uneasy hearing what was said about Lossa and Briana, and so early...and as much as she cared little for Master Tarrlok's disposition, she questioned herself for questioning whether what he said had any weight. Her perception of Lossa and Briana were completely opposite to what he laid out...but she did feel horrible they were thrown into this by her mom.

Now it seemed like chaos was just over the horizon. This tension...wasn't good.

Nothing made sense anymore. For a sec her own irritation forced her into her own thoughts -- she was lost in space.

Then she heard her name, and that made her tense up.

She leaned in...

So the incident with the student...the wrecked oasis...it's all connected like she suspected. She wanted to see those reports herself. Lossa had a lot on her plate right now, and neither Briana or Caltin were here.

Father asked him if he could be here, to be at the Enclave for a couple of days to speak for him. This was not a negative for Connel and he did not take it that way, it was important for Caltin to see this place survive and thrive that he wanted someone he could trust there to not only speak for his father, but create his own legacy. That being said, Connel did not stay in any assigned quarters, he did not feel any of them should go to him but to the Younglings, the Padawans, and in general all of the Jedi who will call this place “home.” So while he was here, Connel stayed in his ship, he only slept there, but still.

… but “I” digress…

His father wanted to teach the younglings the importance of fitness. This was a natural course for Jedi as a whole, but Vanagor’s way was always considered “special”, if not “insane”. So that is where Connel was most of the time this conversation had been taking place, truth be told he hadn’t gotten the memo that the meeting was going down. So when Connel walked into the meeting room (looking for Lossa), he stopped quietly and listened to everyone. He listened to the Chagrian Master Tarrlok make his points, and though the smirk matched with his bow was caught by the younger Vanagaor, Tarrlok wasn’t wrong in many respects.

That doesn’t mean it was going to make a difference.

Standing against the wall as he saw a lull in the conversation, Connel decided to follow up on his newly growing inner confidence (after all, this wasn’t a social scene, no shyness here) and spoke up. While I’m not the “Vanagor” you all are looking for, to be sure, I’m certain he would not mind if I speak for him. If he were here, he would tell you that the role of the Master is to lead… a Temple…

… this is not a Temple…

Walking out to where everyone could see him, he met eyes with Tarrlok.

Now, before you argue that I am using “wordplay” and “semantics”, I remind you that Master Jade built this Enclave, rebuilt the library on Ossus not out of notoriety or leadership but to give the younger generation the room and the chance to grow in their own path, in their own manner, their own path. There is a specific way she wants this to go… and… by her own words… the only one who can run it the way Master Jade wants it to run is the Padawan you are arguing against; Lossa Darcuhl. Is the role of a Master not only to instruct, but to stand back and allow the Learner to show what they have learned?

He shrugged.

What would I know though? It just seems to me that the call is not yours to make, or to get us to agree with. It has already been made, now it’s up to the rest of us to let her prove her master right, and help her along the way.

Speaking up and clearing up some confusion

She had not intended to be there.

Finding solitude in a quiet back corner of the massive industrialesque hall, her meditations were interrupted by the sound of gathering. They filed in quickly. Tigris, sensing by the station of most of the arrivals, it was a meeting she was not intended to attend. But a mischievous curiosity moved her feet, not closer to the exit, but to the shadows deeper in the corner. To disappear was second-nature to the former Seyugi Dervish, and it happened almost without a thought on her part. There was comfort in the cloak of the shadow, in the cold durasteel beam against which she leaned.

Perhaps the newest apprentice at the Enclave, Tigris found herself dropped into a milieu of upheaval. An astute gatherer of information, it did not take the padawan long to discern the climate. The trial, the disappearance, the directives of their Headmaster had thrown them all. While too new to have emotional, visceral reactions to those events, Tigris could not help but feel them battering against her like waves against a rocky cliff. Surely, this gathering must too regard those matters.

Dark eyes followed Master Tarrlok to the front of the room. His presence could be felt. Master Tarrlok was one of the first Jedi she met at Jakku, the second in her life, at least since the carbonite thaw. Tarrlok was unlike most of the Knights and Masters she had come to meet in the few weeks at Jakku. He was much more like her former masters than they. Stern, dour, unrelenting. Tigris sensed others begrudged the Chagrian these traits. But to the former assassin, they were familiar, and in that, comforting.

News had traveled quickly, and Tigris already knew that Lossa had been appointed by Headmaster Jade to head up the facility in her absence. And as the discussion unfolded before her, she knew that a power struggle was already at work. Master Tarrlok spoke wisdom. How careless to place an apprentice in charge of a facility like this when there were capable knights and masters much more experienced who could step in?

Tigris had not yet had the honor of meeting Master Jade, though the woman’s reputation was impossible to overlook. All those in the Enclave had such great esteem for her, and Tigris did not question that reputation. But Master Jade’s choice begged the question of why make such a contradictory move? Nor did Tigris have ought against Lossa. It just didn't make sense.

lIdly brushing her bottom lip with a single finger, Tigru listened to the voices, noting with some surprise how the higher ranked members saw no fault in a plan to have padawan lead the site. It was becoming more and more clear. This was a debate of logic versus loyalty and faith. Tigris’ admiration for Romi Jade grew as her supporters proved unyielding in honoring her wishes. Tigris wished she had been able to meet Master Jade, to know her like they did. But all she knew was that Master Tarrlok spoke with more rational sense, and seemed sincere in his desire to do what was right and best for them all.

She had been with the discussion largely centering around her and the lack of experience she had on the matter of leading the Enclave. She could take a few well aimed barbs in her direction. Honeyed words were something she had grown accustomed to with her more frequent dealings on Naboo. Her indignation being sidestepped entirely by the fierce protectiveness of one of the few people she held near and dear.

Anyone could drag her credentials as they saw fit. But even the mere mention of Briana made her blood boil.

"Knight Sal-Soren indeed has her hands full. And she is meant to help rather than directly lead." Working to keep her tone from rising to any form of anger, though her eyes held hot coals purposefully aimed at Tarrlok.

"So her absence currently, especially given the impromptu nature of this meeting without any kind of forewarning to anyone that may have a direct and impactful opinion on the matter including Master Vanagor, is a given." A slow blink breaking her words as she slowly used her thumb to pop her other fingers, listening to the others around them speak. Reassured that many were in support of Romi's decision, and making the mental note to attempt a meeting with them at some point to address these topics properly, and without exciting an entire room.

The question directly aimed at her however made her frown.

"It's a worrying development. One that we should likely avoid allowing to happen again without knowing the cause, or having the masters investigate. The wreck itself seemed to resonate in the force and push visions onto those present, including myself. While worrying, it also provided an excellent example to those present about the dangers of exploring the unknown and provided insight on what potential courses of training they could use." Providing her opinion rather matter of fact than with any looming curiosity.

It had been a strange adventure, and one worthy of remembering as they all pushed forward here at the Enclave. The majority had provided their agreement with moving forward with Romi's decision, and now Lossa sat ready to affirm their faith in her.

"A more in depth conversation should be held about the matter of the wreck at a different time however, as this distracts from the main topic you brought to the meeting." Waving her hand to dismiss the talk of the wreck as she fixed her eyes on Tarrlok once more.

"As for the worry of my well being, I am not only relying on the masters present here at the Enclave for support. I have a personal support system that I can rely on, and am aiming to expand that as I move forward." Casting her gaze around the room once more with a forced smile.

She'd managed to keep herself grounded, avoiding going into a heated attack about the barb aimed at Briana. Her cousin was dealing with not only her own issues, but those stemming from Naboo as a whole, and Lossa was not about to get into a standing argument about how one would be able to navigate that mess without Briana present to defend herself.

"It's awfully early, I say, to be calling into question Padawan Darcuhl's capabilities..." he spoke, stepping forward to face Tarrlok Tarrlok Tarrlok Tarrlok .

"No. I don't think it's early at all, actually." He responded. "And in reference to Master Vanagor, it was his choice to be a witness in the trial. Some of us are here, and some of us aren't at different times...such an assembly is keen to happen at any given moment, you may miss it...you may not."

He cleared his throat, "And no, nothing waits for anyone. We're really having this conversation now. Whom might you be again? I don't think we're familiar..I know nearly all of the students by name who come through here, as such is the role of this master." He turned, others speaking shifting the conversation in another direction.

"Perhaps we should wait...just perhaps." he responded to Katarine. His concerns were already on the table, he posed the questions, and that was his goal. In his mind, waiting was the goal for now.

"Yes, I'm aware that it was Cortana Jade who led the group. My issue was the presence of discernment in the senior chaperones with them. Should they have been there is the better question. I'm aware of how the processes here work, I believe in this system and it is why I brought my concerns straight to the table. However, I guess we should monitor in the coming time if these Padawan start to exhibit some of the same health issues this other one in the report went through...maybe then it'll escalate."

Then to Connel, "I don't recall myself making any such calls. I shared my concerns, which are valid."

Then Lossa, well before she spoke, he could feel the tamed frustration emanating from deep inside her. He relished in it on the inside.

He smirked and a nod followed, "Hmm, finally a respectable answer young Darcuhl. I look forward to seeing this all develop or fail under you. Hopefully, in time the rest of this assembly would grow to not be so blinded by their faith and respect for Master Romi Jade, which I have myself no doubt, that they wouldn't call anything into question, or share their concerns. However, I yield...."

For now.

Tarrlok bowed before them all and made his eerie exit.

Blinded by their trust in Romi, all eyes on him, and perhaps maybe he had found a trigger in Lossa...he didn't see this as a Loss. Tension had been created.

Nathan's grim countenance could have easily doubled as a scowl as he stared at Tarrlok Tarrlok , tilting his head to one side mechanically as the Jedi Master tried to question him as to his name.

Not doing your job, eh? he thought to himself. But rather than answer, Nathan let the others speak, staring directly at Tarrlok the whole time like a bird of prey sizing up a mouse before it dived.

His skin crawled at how oily the chagrian's responses were, laced with subtle gaslighting and contempt. He'd run into Jedi that were no better than bureaucrats, but this felt...different...

Nathan was an outlier. He had no feeling for Romi Jade Romi Jade , and was no loyalist of hers, not actually caring if she was guilty or innocent. But he had met Lossa Darcuhl Lossa Darcuhl , and had developed a respect for her capabilities. Which is why he found Tarrlok's dodges and excuses irritating.

Then he was gone, having been ratio'd to hell by everyone else.

Nathan would take no visible action himself unless necessary. But just listening to the responses he gave made Nathan mistrust him on instinct.

That one would have to be watched.

Nathan faded into the background while the others debated and went back to observing. It said a lot that Nathan had developed a near instant dislike of Tarrlok. He could remember being irritated by Jedi at times, but rarely did it cross into actual genuine distaste.

He wondered if he was overestimating him. But he hadn't gotten this far in the business by not listening to his gut when it told him something wasn't right.

He would have to be as patient as Tarrlok obviously was going forward, just to make sure Lossa didn't get blindsided by the obnoxious cretin down the road...
