The room was quiet, it was an “outside” room, meaning one of the rooms accessible directly to the outside, and not just an outer atrium of the Temple itself. Connel was about to leave, but his alarm rang, so he gave Buster a few scritches, a toy to play with, pulled a couple of treats out when the pup wasn’t looking and laid his weapons out on a table. The purpose was simple, to go through and clean them.

Lightsabers, his lightknives, and his lightblaster do not work like “regular” blasters (his “Omega Squad rifle” for example). They do not require to be inspected like this, at least as many times as he does. That is why he went through this ritual as much as he could, they were not likely to ever malfunction on him, but why take the chance? That was Special Forces training, not simply Jedi.

It also took his mind off of recent events…

Moorja…

Geonosis…

He didn’t dwell… but the “Shadow” wanted to center his mind.

Collecting belongings that she had kept in an apartment on Naboo, Dreidi did not see the point in having the place when it was no longer a world that she expected herself to be frequently travelling to and from anymore. Aileni could come and go as he pleased to Dathomir and there were other crucial missions that Dreidi needed to focus on. It was also a chance to visit her son and inform him that things were going to be different going forward, since Dreidi had forsaken her Jedi roots and placed that path behind her. She was fully a witch and that would be all that Dreidi identified as. There were other motivations in visiting Aileni as well.

The potential thoughts of sacrificing her life, her freedom in order to secure her mother was something that lingered on Dreidi's mind. She had been told not to think of such possibilities, that it would be a fate worse than death. But losing her mother, having no parent, that was not something that Dreidi was prepared for currently and she was willing to do all that was necessary to ensure it did not happen.

It was the reason for organising the witches to locate and track her mother, it was why Dreidi intended on meeting the Mand'alor to request his assistance in fighting Carnifex. It was why Dreidi tolerated Jax's desires to help and why she was going to allow the Jedi and the High Republic to join in whatever capacity that Jax could muster them into being. Dreidi did not hold her breath on there being much support or willingness to jump into action since they felt so slow in reacting to things.

Looking around the Jedi temple, remembering the times that she came, trained others, visited with her son while he was young. All of it tainted with the views of the Jedi that she had developed, the resentment she was feeling constantly. A sigh of disappointment as she was not sure what to expect lingering any longer around.

The room door happened to be open when he saw her walking by. It was the elder Xeriac, Alieni’s mother. He had seen her around, even met her once when practically dragging Michael to her training session in a forest, he knew and trained her son on a few things. He paused, unsure whether to greet her or pretend he hadn't noticed.

He still got up and walked to the doorway. I’ve seen that look… I’ve had that look.

A soft yip from Grisial as she sensed his warning of a person approached, "I know, Grisial. Thank you." She gently caressed the top of the Vulptex's head as she turned to face the person who had come to see her.

"Exhaustion and finality. Strange to know I will not be here again." Dreidi stated, "or at least, the version of me that could visit will be greatly different to this one now. This being that has been for over thirty years." She had been a Jedi for thirty years, born into the Order. Now... Now that Order was not the one she felt comfortable belonging to. It betrayed her, the Order was attempting to kill her family. Or at least, that was how Dreidi saw things with how Jax repeatedly endangered members of her family. How her father had killed himself for this Order.

The dangers this Order would place on her son. The Order took from her repeatedly but never gave anything back.

"Why have you held such a look before?" Dreidi asked, curious why he came in with such a thought, felt like there was something lingering on his mind as much as there was something lingering on her own. Something that had him thinking of difficult decisions, final moments. "You do not seem the type to question your position within the Order." While she had not interacted much with Connel, there had been some interactions and Dreidi had met his father several times as well.

Neither seemed the type to question their stance within the Jedi.

He still got up and walked to the doorway. My father taught me. It was one of my first lessons, it’s not an “Order” or a “Temple” that makes you a Jedi, it’s your choices. I’m not a member of this Order, maybe “adjacent” but really I go my own way. No disrespect to anyone here, I have known Grandmaster Quin all of my life… literally. So, I get what you're saying. I watched my father die to save the lives of horses of others only to watch the Alliance roll over and die. He did not mention that she is his aunt, not important.

He started to take apart his rifle as he kept going with his thought. It can be a lonely existence, and I often feel “outside,” I will admit, but I can go where I am needed. Not to cause more trouble than help, but remind people out there what Jedi are supposed to be. Be there when Jedi aren’t if that makes sense.

He did not want to disrespect anyone, but he would be doing so on himself if he had gone otherwise. Maybe I’m not one, not under the “Code,” at least how it is interpreted nowadays, but this way I can be what the galaxy needs me to be. I can make up for things like what happened on Moorja, Geonosis, Coruscant… like right now... preparing for a move on Commenor...

Something changed in him for the positive. A month ago he would not be able to mention any of those planets without visible bitterness.
Maybe that is why I am preparing for a move on Commenor... get someone out who is probably feeling abandoned.

Dreidi shrugged her shoulders, "the Alliance was in a slow death. Many within could not see it but there was far too much stagnation and it was too large for its own good." Dreidi had never really gotten along with many in the Alliance, her views, the way that she acted. It was something that went very against the grain with the Galactic Alliance. She had been told by several people that she would not work as a Jedi within the Galactic Alliance and that idea felt lingering.

"The Jedi way is not the way that I desire to be. It has not been for a while but I kept trying since it was the way that my family has followed." Dreidi stated, she isolated herself on Dathomir for a reason, she separated herself from the Jedi on Naboo because they did things that were not the way that Dreidi would do them. "But recent events have ensured that I never step this path again. It is too painful and I refuse to accept that this is the only way that any good will be done."

She was a witch but she was not evil, she was not seeking to harm others. She was a witch and Dreidi was determined to show that the Jedi were not the only Force Users who could do good and should be seen as heroes. Dreidi would be a hero, one that was not a Jedi.

"There is never making up for the mistakes of the past. The scars they leave will be marked for life. All we can do is ensure they do not happen again." There was never taking back the hurt that a person caused, whether intentional or not. Jax would never be her family for his actions and Dreidi could not forgive the pain he repeatedly caused. But she could ensure that her son, her family were not his next victims.

Turning to Connel, "what is happening on Commenor?" The planet had once been home for Dreidi, when the Silver Jedi existed on the world. But it was not Kashyyyk, it was not Dathomir, those were places she held truly the best memories. But still, she was curious about what could be going on.

When she spoke of the Galactic Alliance dying a slow death, he shrugged, and nodded his head quietly. Perhaps. I am not discounting the issues that were at hand, just remembering what I learned from those days. Now that question is “What had he learned?”

When she started to explain how “The Jedi Way” as the Sith call it(no, he did not think of her as a Sith or even a Darksider) had lost its luster for her, he listened without judgment. Then stifled a small laugh. The “Jedi” response to that is to follow your own path. The truth is, as long as you can become the best version of you, that is all that matters. He did not know her, at least not personally, but if her son was any reflection, she would be fine.

You are absolutely right though, this is not the only way to do some good. Sounds like you are becoming what the galaxy needs you to be. Scars and all. The past can be great, but it can suck too, but it helps shape who you are.

Connel was putting his rifle back together, having cleaned it impeccably and was working on the sight off his Lightblaster when she asked about what was going to be happening on Commenor. He did not know what she might know, nor did he really know of her “familial” connection. Connel did not want to speak out of turn. Long story short. Master Ismet-Thio was taken hostage by the “big bad”, and while her husband is looking for help. I’m preparing to go and keep him on task and not repeat his mistakes… He stifled a snort that held no hint of humor. If I don’t punch him first.

"Maybe, I personally did not learn much. It felt like a place that ostracized those who stood outside the norm for what they perceived a Jedi to be." Dreidi had always been a different flavour of Jedi, never conventional and never sticking strictly to how other Jedi would act. She conversed with Sith, she sought balance in the Force and Dreidi believed that sometimes, there was a need for a Jedi to make the necessary evil or violent decisions to ensure later violence on innocent lives was not committed. It was why some thought she was unworthy of the Jedi title.

Now she had dropped it all by herself.

She shook her head, "I have never known the Jedi to desire the best for a person, only the strongest dedication to their doctrine is considered the best version of yourself. That one must be fully dedicated to the Light Side of the Force, one must hate all Sith and one must look down at those who question this authority." Dreidi stated. Her views were skewed since her interactions with Jax but they were also formed by her negative interactions with Jedi in the past as well. Having experienced the most acceptance amongst those who were her fellow witches. "Not every Sith is out there rampaging and wanting to kill everyone."

"Not every Jedi is good, no matter how dedicated to the Light they state to be. And other Force cultures are capable of balancing emotions, the Force and a darkness all people feel. How come the Jedi are ones incapable of doing so?" Dreidi questioned Connel.

When she heard that he was preparing himself for the mission to save her mother, another frustrated sigh escaped her. So Jax had figured her mother's location himself but did not share the information. So much for cooperative work from him. She should have known better. "Of course." There was a dark muttering, cursing of Jax once again. "The mission... It is one to save from my mother. The fool that claims to be my stepfather got her captured, I have been organising my sisters on Dathomir and hoping to garner Mandalorian support in order to combat the threats that will be waiting for us."

"He was the final straw that broke my views on the Jedi. He has caused more harm to my family than benefitted it." Dreidi stated coldly, "he repeats these mistakes no matter who it harms."

Something about this conversation was not making sense. Sure, she was going to her “home” on Dathomir, and was disillusioned with the Jedi, these things happen. However there was something more “personal” with this that caught his attention. I don’t know what to tell you about ostracization. To me, it does not matter what others think of me, and I am sure many of them have their opinions, I grew up being a person first, a Jedi second. My father never let me worry about others, but about doing the right thing.

He did not mention that choices matter, it was hopefully implied.

The Jedi aren’t for everyone. To be honest, I don’t even consider myself a “Jedi”... not worthy of the title. To me it means something… and the things I am willing to do to stand for others… There was a hint of personal disappointment in his voice. I think that Jedi are ultimately afraid to be afraid. Order and Chaos are not two sides of the same coin and therefore cannot be controlled. Though they would want to. I think that is their problem for the most part, at least how my father explained back when he was a Knight. Now? Now you have Jedi who are heads of government, parts of Noble Houses, aristocrats, winos... He smirked at the last one being a joke but made his point.

When she brought up her hatred towards Dax, Connel just scrunched his lips, closed his eyes, shook his head and muttered. Dammit Jax… He listened to everything she had said, the conviction in her voice and though it was concerning, it all made sense. Jax is not representative of all Jedi… trust me on that. He is a distant blood relative… He told her how Jax was a descendant of his half sister who he had never met (as she had lived and died over eight hundred years ago), but was also son to Darth Carnifex.

I will apologize to you, as I was on Moorja when your mother was captured. I was doing my best to hold off Sith Acolytes, Forces, and a walking mammary armory so that he could hold off “Big Bad” and help her escape. She stayed to enhance his connection as he fought. Connel left out his disgust at how Jax was more focused at showing off than getting his wife, and diplomats safely away, Dreidi would pick up on it if she was paying attention. I failed and was sent careening out of that spire.

"Worthy of the title..." It was strange that one had to be worthy to be a Jedi, Dreidi didn't think most of the Jedi know were worthy of the title. Or at least did not think they behaved in the ways that their tenets tell them to uphold. How many Jedi of old would see the Jedi now and think they had trailed too far from the ideals, the intentions of the code and that the Jedi were a shadow of what they once were. Little chance was given for redemption or understanding, titles matter far more than actions to some. No Sith could ever do good, even though Dreidi saw with her own eyes the good that some who held the title Sith Lord could do.

Methods were extreme at times, but they did help people.

Shaking her head, "if I thought he was, my son would not remain here. Even if he is old enough to have his say in the life he leads." Dreidi thought about removing him from the Jedi presence but the boy wished to continue the training and she did think it was best for him to learn so Jedi ways. "But, he is considered a Jedi Master, yet he continues to be corrupted by darkness, harms my family and pays no price for these actions." Dreidi pointed out, while she did not care his alignment, she did think it was hypocritical that a Jedi should be allowed to harness the Dark Side when she had been condemned for desiring to control her innate skills with Force Scream and Bellow. Her desire for control had come from a need to ensure she could not accidentally use the power. Harm others when she was not meaning to.

"He was no different then when he abandoned me during a fight against Carnifex." Lifting her shirt a little, a jagged but well healed scar across her stomach was still there to be seen. "He wished to show off how strong he was, frustrated that he could not win, he disappeared. Leaving me, at 14 or so to fend for myself against the Sith Lord." Dreidi looked to Connel, releasing her shirt to cover the scar once again. "Twice he has endangered and harmed my family in a fight with his father. Twice."

It was heavily implied that Jax would not survive a third attempt. "I appreciate that you did as much as you could. Moorja was a difficult situation and no one could have expected the Sith to be there waiting." She did not wish to hate the Jedi, but she was frustrated, tired with them. "I just cannot support people who hurt me."

Her mention of her son brought his eyes up for a moment. Your son is a good person, with a strong head on his shoulders, you should be proud. If I didn’t have a Padawan already, I would have gladly spoken to him about learning from me, for what it is worth. He didn’t know where the boy’s path would take him but hoped that it was beneficial.

She was mentioning Jax more, about his history, and Connel just shook his head in disappointment. Not with her, but with the Maverick. I am not going to defend him, for it would be an unfair justification if I did. There was again a hint of personal disappointment in his voice. I don’t think that he ever learned how to reach out to others, and it has gotten to the point where when he leans on someone, it tips them over in the worst possible way. No excuse at all, I just don’t think he knows any better…

Then she was describing Jax needing to “show off” in his words… and another expletive… Dammit Jax…

Then she showed her scar, and told more of her story, and his just shook his head. What is it with you? You stupid Schutta. He did not mention it, but hoped she would pick up on him talking about Jax and not her.

I have resources, I have friends, and I have known your mother most of my life through my father’s time in the Silver Jedi. She opened herself to me as “family” almost immediately upon finding out the connection so I promise you that this is personal for me as well. I am not going to make empty promises, but I am going to tell you that I won’t stop until she is face to face with you telling you that she is okay.

She was not incapable, he was not promising a young child that her mommy was being saved from the bad men(she was, but that is mincing words). He was just being truthful, anyone who knew Connel, knew that when he had “that look” in his eye… well…

Just promise me one thing… don’t do anything to Jax until I can punch him first. This might not be the time for humor, but it was worth a shot.

Nodding her head, "he will be a fine warrior one day. There is much that he will learn and many trials he will face. I pray that none of them come soon." Dreidi stated, she despised the idea of having to see her son grow up but she also recognised that it was important for him to grow and develop. That he could not remain the child that she loved forever. That others deserved to see the man that he could become and the importance he will have in doing the work that he wanted to do. Whether that was a Jedi, a Jedi Shadow or merely a warrior trying to do good in the universe.

Dreidi could tell that she was sharing news that Connel did not realise and he was attempting to comprehend everything. "You have a very different view and connection to Jax than I do. I am not judging how you see things with him but all I have known is his desire to reach out and build family bonds with me, only to burn me when I lower my guard with behaviour like this." Dreidi had been difficult with Jax when they first met many, many years ago. A teenager herself, Dreidi had been reluctant to accept this soon-to-be stepfather that appeared in her life.

Now she cursed herself for being naïve enough to think that her gut instincts about him were made from teenage angst. It seemed she had been right from the start to not trust him and not desire his presence in her life.

"I am going to ensure that myself. I have the sisters of Dathomir willing to help in her rescue and I am working on meeting with the leader of the Mandalorian Empire on seeking his help. I believe them to be far more reliable than the Jedi, given everything that I have seen and experienced with the Jedi."

Dreidi raised an eyebrow, "well, I cannot promise that. I have already had a discussion with Jax. He was the first that I sought out after sensing and learning of what happened to my mother. He already knows that any further problems he causes my family will ensure that he does not see another sun rise." There was a cold, dark threatening tone to Dreidi voice, one edged with the fury of a mother, a daughter, a tortured soul.

"So, I doubt any punches will strike as hard a chord as that. But I am sure he will need them if he strays off the straight and narrow. Seems my mother surrenders too much to him, so someone else needs to be the one who keeps him in line." Dreidi stated firmly, she knew many partners who had short leashes on their partners, especially ones prone to cause problems like Jax. If her mother would not, then someone else had to do that before Dreidi decided that Jax was too much of a problem for her family.

Dreidi was all too keen to sever the tie instead of ensuring that Jax was corrected.

Connel let the silence sit for a moment after she finished. Not to be awkward, or let emotion control the situation, but to be measured. Like he was giving her words the respect they deserved… and deciding exactly where to put his own. His gaze didn’t waver.

I believe you. Simple. Direct. No sarcasm, no challenge. I get it. If he crosses that line again… He let out a faint nod. I don’t doubt you’ll follow through.

There was no fear in that statement, or judgment. Just acknowledgement. Then his eyes hardened, not at her… but at the words trajectory. But that’s not the line we’re standing on right now.

There it is. He shifted his weight slightly, arms relaxing at his sides. Less to be closed off. More to be present. “Right now… your mother’s still out there. Breathing. Fighting. Waiting. Hoping.

Each word is deliberate, decisive. And how, even whether she gets home? He paused for a moment to let that hang. That depends on what we do next, all of us.

There is was again, Not you. We.

He stepped into it with her. No distance. No pedestal. I don’t care if it’s Jedi, Dathomiri, Mandalorians, smugglers, or half the underworld if it gets the job done. A faint exhale as he stood from his seat. We use whoever we need.

The words mattered. Then the line in the sand. His voice didn’t rise, but it locked in. I’ll stand with you... but if you let this turn into settling scores… If you split your focus for even a second… A slight shake of his head and in his best attempt to make this as least threatening as possible.

If you make this about him and not about her, I will stop you. Not aggressive he had no reason to be. Not threatening, he didn’t want to be.

Certain, this was not about the Jedi, about the Sith, about her, about Jax Thio Jax Thio , about anything but the safety of Jairdain Ismet-Thio Jairdain Ismet-Thio .

This was not for power, or for pride. She had absolutely every right to feel the way she did and he had no intention of or desire to deny her that. He leaned a little closer not imposing… anchoring. Not for him. Not for the Jedi. Another pause.

For her. Let that sit. Because that’s the truth she can’t argue with. His tone softened just a fraction not weaker… clearer. You don’t trust Jax. Fine. I don’t trust him to get this right either.

There was a flicker of that earlier frustration returns, quieter now. But I trust you to make the right call when it matters.

That’s the pivot. He handed her responsibility… not control.

You want to hold him accountable? He gave a small nod. Good, he needs to be. When it counts.

He let out a breath.

When she’s safe. When she can see you. When you’re not risking being the reason she doesn’t make it back, even unwittingly or unintentionally.

He let the words hang in the air for a moment. Until then… we stay on mission.

Not a command. A standard.

Dreidi paused in her thoughts and looked over to Connel, confused by what he was saying. Dreidi knew the importance of using whatever resources that they could gather in saving her mother, it was why Dreidi sought beyond the High Republic beside the issue of fearing their inaction would delay rescuing her. Dreidi's mind was focused on saving her mother first, ensuring her mother's survival above all else.

So, Dreidi was further confused when Connel mentioned turning this into a petty matter of settling scores. Her eyes narrowed as the liquid golden irises burned with indignation. He dared to assume that Dreidi was, or could ever be, fixated on this being anything other than saving her mother. "You overstep Connel." Dreidi spoke in a serious tone, barely containing the anger that rose inside her over this. It was one thing to joke and request that Dreidi go easy on Jax. It was another to assume Dreidi would allow anything to get in the way of saving her mother.

"What I do. What I will sacrifice to save my mother. Those are matters beyond your comprehension and it is beyond insulting you think I would let that man blind me on what is needed to save my mother. My. Mother." Emphasizing that this was not simply a normal rescue mission, this was one that was forever going to be deeply personal to Dreidi. Connel had no understanding of what Dreidi would give, what she would surrender to ensure that her mother was safe. How willing Dreidi would be to endure hell so that her family ever suffered again.

Pointing to Connel, "I am not the one holding him accountable, I am done with him. He will only ever see him when he karks up again and I will kill him for it. That is my point. It is up to you to ensure that he never sees me again." Dreidi stated coldly, there was fury that burned in her eyes, a fury that was not fading ever. "He has failed my family too many times now, I offer him no more chances to do better. Either he does, or he dies." Dreidi stated simply.

Petting Grisial, Dreidi smoothed the raised hackles of her bonded Vulptex so he was not agitated like she was. "I am doing everything to ensure my mother comes home safe and sound, and sooner rather than later." There was a sigh, she felt like this was another sign that shifting away from the Jedi was a good move for her.

Connel didn’t react right away. Didn’t snap back, didn’t bristle, it would make things worse. No, he let her words land. All of them. The anger that was needed. The accusation was not surprising. The line she drew between herself and everyone else.

His jaw tightened slightly… then eased. Yeah… A small nod was next. I did.

No defense. No spin.

I overstepped.

He let that breathe for a moment. Arguing was pointless, he was right in his stance, but she was right, he overstepped. His gaze stayed on her, steady, not confrontational… just there. But not because I think you’d lose sight of what matters.

He shook his head slightly. I don’t. He let that hang for a second. I think you see it clearer than most.

His approach was important. He remained in his stance, but this approach would hopeful restore her footing without backing off on his own. Then he shifted, not away… but deeper. You’re right about something else too.

His voice lowered, not softer… just more grounded.I don’t know what you’d give to get her back. A pause let the wording land. I don’t know what you’d be willing to burn.

He paused once more. …but I know what that kind of thinking costs.

There it is. This was not a lecture, but a scar. His eyes flickered for just a second—not weakness, just memory. I watched my father die.

There was no need for embellishment or dramatics. Just truth dropped like a stone into still water. And for a long time… Feeling the catharsis, he let out a faint exhale. …I was ready to burn anything that stood between me and making that right.

He let that sit, because she’ll recognize it. Then the pivot, one subtle but firm. So let me be clear. Not louder. Just locked in. I’m not here to threaten you, or to control you.

Then he took a small step forward not aggressive but anchoring. I just want to make sure we don’t lose her…

He sighed or you.

That’s the line. Not about Jax. Not about the Jedi. Her. His arms relaxed at his sides again.

If you want to be done with him… He let out a small nod. That’s your call, I don’t think even your mother would blame you.

No argument. No resistance.

That path you’re talking about? It doesn’t end with just him.[COLOR] Let that linger, because she’s smart enough to follow it.

...And your mother? He took a breath. She doesn’t need you coming to her like that.

He wasn’t offering judgment, just perspective. She needs you standing in front of her… whole. That’s the heart of it.

Then, steady as ever: You do this your way… I’m still standing with you, even if only in spirit. No hesitation. No conditions.

Then he looked down for a moment. .... but if that line starts pulling you somewhere you don’t come back from… His gaze didn’t waver. I’ll stand in front of you too. Not to take you down, not to protect a guy who is deserving it less and less at this point, but to at least try and help you keep perspective.

No threat. A promise. Finally, just a touch of that dry edge slipping back in:

…and for the record? I still plan on hitting him first.

No smile.

Just enough gravity release to keep the room from snapping in half.

"My father died when I was 13, giving his life up for his Jedi Order. I have already lost one parent, I do not intend on losing another. I am sure if you knew that your mother's life was threatened that you would give anything you had to ensure that you could save her?" Dreidi countered, she had discussed what she was willing to surrender to ensure her family were protected with Vytal not too long ago. She knew that putting her freedom, her life, on the line to ensure her family were never threatened again was tough pill to swallow. But Dreidi could not risk any more pain from losing family.

Shaking her head, "the Jedi have already lost me. I am a witch now, so do not fret on my connections and emotions." Dreidi commented, her stance was firm, the way of the witches was different. There was a focus on utilising emotions to empower the skills in Magick. "Witches are not ones to suffer from corruption and losing oneself to darkness. Choices can be made. Bad decisions, harmful ones, yes. But that is not the same as suffering with corrupting nature like the Jedi and Sith suffer with."

"My focus does not waiver. Just ensure yours and Jax's don't either." Dreidi stated, Jax was the one who often lost sight of the mission to focus on more personal achievements. Failed attempts to show that he was superior to his father were the reasons that they were continually in this situation. "For now, I will need to depart and continue to attempt to gather some additional support in fighting Carnifex." It was going to take an army and Dreidi was hoping to raise that. She would scorch the galaxy with an army to protect her family.

Turning to leave, there was a moment of pause. "Aileni knows his grandmother has been kidnapped, that I am organising her rescue. But I have told him he cannot come. I will not risk him in such a dangerous mission. But... If anything happens. If this mission... if this mission goes badly, then he will need support and compassion. Dathomir upbringing means he is more susceptible to surrendering to his own emotions. Few Jedi will understand or look past his pain to see that he is still good."

Leaving the room, Dreidi wanted to ensure that her son would always be protected and kept safe by those around him. Whether he was here or on Dathomir.
