Faction First Flight by Starlight | ZX-44B System (Farworlds Alliance/Starlight Squadron)

The ZX-44B System, The Unknown Regions

The experimental vessel, known to some as The Freebird, moved slowly through the black hole protected ZX-44B System. The ship was on a routine patrol for while entry into the system was difficult, it was not impossible. The people of Refuge knew this fact and so did the members of the Farworlds Alliance. However, the Alliance’s recent presence in the system did little favor toward hiding the system’s points of entry, and that imposition would not stop anytime soon, as Refuge only pulled in more refugees in these turbulent times. So the Farworlds Alliance sent the Freebird and the Starlight Squadron on its first paired patrol with two goals. First, to direct any refugees to safety. Second, to route anyone else.

Obj. 1 - The Squadron

Inside of The Freebird, there is a debriefing room. In it, The members of the newly formed Starlight Squadron await assignments for their first mission, but first they have a choice to make. Will they trust the shadowy director and the squadron’s equally shadowy benefactors and fly at the chance to protect the Farworlds Alliance, or do they leave and forgo a chance to join up with the squadron that promises a chance to do good?

Obj. 2 - Operations & Logistics

Whether in The Freebird or Big Bertha, those at the helm watch short and long range scanners on the lookout for refugee and enemy ships entering the system. They’ll help who they can, but when the fighting starts they will deploy the Starlight Squadron and likely let the starfighters handle the more dangerous flying, and all while running support for the squadron on their first outing.

Squadron Debriefing Room, The Freebird

Tseb watched from one of the lower stacks of the larger debriefing room as a sizeable Orb Droid entered and settled at the head of the room. He looked over his shoulders to see several others scattered about and entering the space. He wondered who in the room he would be flying with, because that is what they were there for, to fly. This was the very first meeting of the Starlight Squadron, a militia style squadron made up of volunteers and those few recruits that had been sought after by the Squadron’s gracious and dutiful benefactors.

“Greetings, Assembled!” The droid announced in a slow, stilted, and almost sinister, amplified tone. It was enough to unnerve the Rodian, as the information on the Squadron was already minimal. “I am D1-R3CT0R. You may address me as “The Director”. I have been programmed and paid for by a shadow benefactor of the Farworlds Alliance with the singular purpose of being the brain and hub of direction for you, the Starlight Squadron. In my programming lies the keys to the Squadron’s future success, but only if you choose it.”

Tseb looked around the room again, studying the faces he could for any reaction other than his own. They had a choice? His choice had already been made when he decided to step aboard the Freebird. The mystery of how the squadron would work did not deter him then and even faced with the strange droid he wouldn’t be deterred now. The others weren’t him though. There were Mandalorians, Jedi, and soldiers, in addition to civilians. Tseb didn’t feel so insecure about being in the latter camp. He thought, whether it was true or not, that maybe he’d had less to lose than the others.

“I’ve been instructed to allow those who do not wish to take orders from a droid to leave the briefing room. You will stay on the Freebird until we can return you to Spaceport Alpha. Those who wish to proceed may stay. All may ask one question before making their decision. I will answer them to the extent my programming will allow.” The droid waited as those assembled determined the order of their questions, or if they would need to ask one at all.

Tseb remained seated, quiet, and just a bit greener than he usually was. He gulped his nerves, deciding he didn't need a question. He was already committed to being here. He adjusted his green and yellow pilot's jacket and turned in his seat to watch the others.

"Just humor the droid," Shem noted. "I've already had a... thorough discussion with the higher ups and the crew. Freebird will assume emergency control if the situation calls for it, but for now we're just support."

Shem sat himself down in a chair, the tall Rishi procuring a tiny juice box before surgically inserting the straw through the hole in the top. Then he lounged back and began to sip out the contents within. He wasn't entirely sure about the whole 'orders from a droid' business, but they'd have time to see if it and it's mysterious benefactor were worth their salt.

"Just some FYI housekeeping," he continued, "Freebird is carrying onboard stealth tech. Jammers, camo, the full nine yards. It'll get you in nice and quiet, but jammers are non-discriminatory. Your sensors will be just as screwed as the poor suckers we roll up on. That means you all need to get friendly on the comms and make sure you keep track of each other. We're not equipped to collect salvage from friendly fire."

Aenarr narrowly avoided having to lecture at the academy this time, he'd left that to Saviin. Luckily he'd been faster on the sign up sheet for this endeavor than his 2IC. Tra'ibahikan. So here he was, sitting at this briefing, company techs seeing to his fighter and the ordnance he brought aboard in the hangar. Still beat the haran out of beating good habits into rookie pilots who were determined to show you that they knew something after all.

“I’ve been instructed to allow those who do not wish to take orders from a droid to leave the briefing room. You will stay on the Freebird until we can return you to Spaceport Alpha. Aenarr glanced around the room. buy'ce still on. The Rodian and the human Jedi he didn't know, though he imagined that would change over the course of their service together. Shem Spinner Shem Spinner was one of the heroes of Tingel Arm Coalition if he remembered correctly, he didn't have the pleasure of serving with then but his direct alor, Fleet Admiral Nyles Kote Nyles Kote had spoken highly enough of them. Of course, there was almost no one in Strill Securities who had not heard of Braze Braze .

"Still pays the same doesn't it?" he asked when he heard the part about taking orders from a droid. "Doesn't matter to me, any, either way," he added with a shrug.

"Just humor the droid," Shem noted. "I've already had a... thorough discussion with the higher ups and the crew. Freebird will assume emergency control if the situation calls for it, but for now we're just support."

"Shouldn't need more than that, burc'ya," added Aenarr. "Though maybe let's hear what we're going after first? Unless this is just a test, that is?" he asked, looking at the droid that had addressed them earlier.

BYOO/OBJ 2: Tech Work

Location: Hangar Bay

While the pilots of Starlight Squadron scurried to the ready room, techs like Saul were swarming over their ships, making sure they were ready to go when their pilots barreled out to jump in their cockpits. So it was time to pull off the refueling hoses and do last-minute diagnostics, giving these pilots the best versions of their craft possible.

The best part was that most of these were variants of legacy fighters, things that Saul had serviced before. The only one he hadn't was the Mando Craft and the Armored Men thankfully had their own techs to work on their stuff. And so Saul kept to his work, trying to find out how a starfighter could power an entire laser beam.

Braze had never experienced being part of an organized team like this before, and he was excited to see where the unfamiliar arrangement might lead him. He found it curious that their apparent commander was a droid, though D1-R3CT0R struck him less as the true authority and more as a handler… an intermediary serving some mysterious benefactor.

At the end of the day, droids tended to default to their programming. Braze found them captivating for that very reason, drawn toward learning how they worked and what, precisely, made them tick. He had been slowly gathering a cadre of unusual droids into something resembling an advisory council, so accepting advice and receiving orders from one were practically the same thing… right?

When the offer for questions came, Braze raised his hand, indicating that he did, in fact, possess one particularly vexing query.

"What is your favorite color, and why?"

"What is your favorite color, and why?"

"Ice breakers?" Jalen noted as he entered and sat down.

Not one he could participate in. You had to see colors to have a favorite, and Jalen hadn't seen colors in a very long time. He wasn't really sure if he had a favorite any more. He took a moment to listen to the mechanical components inside the droid. He was good with tech, but droids were very different from people. No aura to read, so you couldn't understand their programming until they acted.

"You all have fun with that, I guess," he exhaled as he crossed his arms and made himself comfortable.
