It had been a routine patrol.
Of course, with so much of Khemost being wild, uncharted territory filled with traps, dungeons, and various other hazards, the planet was always dangerous, even in parts of Midas. While House Io was making progress in taming Khemost, the sheer extent of the dungeons, tombs, catacombs, and underground ruins ultimately made doing so a nigh-impossible task. There was so much that was yet unexplored and would likely remain so for years, decades, centuries, and millenia.
And still, Esmeralda found herself surprised and scared when she fell into one of those very dungeons.
Fortunately, the Echani was saved from injury by the lyra gravity system integrated into her armor, which automatically slowed her descent as she plummeted through the gaping, yet invisible hole in the snow, disappearing from her squad in an instant. Esmeralda had been the only one to fall, but it didn’t take long for her sisters to realize that one of their number was missing, driving them to immediately execute a search, which had proven unsuccessful. Attempts to communicate had only resulted in static, but since Esmeralda’s transponder was still pinging her location, they quickly figured out that the Siren was somewhere underground.
They could not even begin to conceive how far down she was.
“Valeria? Syrena? Velexia?”
Nothing, once again.
Esmeralda coughed, her voice having become hoarse after the shouting. By now, the Echani knew that she might be wasting energy doing so, but she also knew that going through the catacombs alone was extremely dangerous. If someone could find and perhaps, pull her back out, maybe she wouldn’t have to do that.
Unfortunately, that hope was fading fast. It seemed she would have to find her own way out.
Checking the time, Esmeralda knew that it was already dark aboveground. The hole she had fallen through had been nigh-invisible even under daylight conditions. It went without saying that finding it at night would be nigh-impossible and extremely dangerous to boot, in case anyone fell while searching for her. Fortunately, the Siren knew that the circumstances of her fall could have been much worse. She was clad in vacuum-sealed armor with temperature regulation technology that kept her warm in spite of below freezing temperatures. She had rations to last a day, weapons with full loads of ammunition and power cells, and her armor had integrated mobility systems that would allow her to traverse over any obstacle. Finally, everything in her armor was powered by diatium power cells, which possessed natural recharging capabilities.
In short, with the exception of her droid, she had almost everything. Dying down here was by no means a foregone conclusion.
Taking a deep breath, Esmeralda sat down by the underground stream and checked her equipment, starting with her carried weapons, a disruptor rifle and a 10-gauge assault shotgun. They were deadly, savage instruments that could down most man-sized targets in a single shot. While Esmeralda was skilled in Gun Kata-style Teräs Käsi, when it came to her weapons, she preferred raw firepower above all else. After her weapons, she took her razor skates off of her boots, giving them a quick once-over before locking them back into place. They were one of her favorite pieces of equipment, giving her the ability to skate across any terrain, driven by tiny, mono-edged blade wheels that could slash through rock and metal. Unfortunately, she wasn’t skilled enough in their use to run the skates at full power, but the sheer adrenaline they sent coursing through her nerves and additional mobility made them more than worth the addition.
She wondered if they might help her survive the night.
Picking up her weapons, Esmeralda placed the disruptor rifle on a magnetic retaining strip on her back and loaded her shotgun with a magazine of slug rounds.
Then, with a determined glint in her eyes, the Siren set off into the depths, intent upon finding her way out of the catacombs.
