PRODUCTION INFORMATION
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
  • Classification: Miniaturized Guided Munitions Launcher - “Wrist” Scale Weapon
  • Size: Average
  • Weight: Average
  • Ammunition Type: Variable Payload Nano Missiles - Roughly Equivalent to Whistling Birds in Caliber
    • Pink Vapor Nano Missile - Nano missiles loaded with a small payload of Pink Vapor, can be set to detonate on manual operator command, automatic computer brain activation, on impact, or at a set time, releasing a burst of gas which can dissipate energy weapons’ fire.
    • Nagnol Gas Nano Missile - Nano missiles loaded with a small payload of Nagnol Gas, can be set to detonate on manual operator command, automatic computer brain activation, on impact, or at a set time, releasing a burst of gas which can disrupt sensory equipment. It should be noted that this will almost certainly blind the host unit as well, unless they are able to network with friendly units outside of the gas cloud.
    • Seeking Anti-Warhead Nano Missile - Nano missiles loaded with a tiny concussive charge, intended to knock off course, disable, and/or prematurely detonate designated warheads, explosives, and/or thrown projectiles. Typically set to detonate as soon as it reaches an effective blast radius or upon impact with a targeted warhead, but can also detonate on manual operator command, automatic computer brain activation, upon impact with an unspecified surface, or at a set time.
  • Ammunition Capacity: Average
    • 24 Nano Missiles
  • Effective Range: Average
    • 85 Meters
  • Rate of Fire: Very High
  • Damage Output: Very Low
  • Recoil: Average
SPECIAL FEATURES
STRENGTHS
  • Fast RoF - The FAE/MDW-01 has a very fast rate of fire, enabling it to put out nano missiles with great speed, to better intercept barrages, whistling birds, or large quantities of incoming energy weapons’ fire.
  • High Response - By necessity, the FAE/MDW-01 is an extremely fast, responsive system, loaded with sensor detection to pick up on signs of an ongoing target lock attempt and various sensors to detect, then intercept on incoming warheads, all while avoiding friendly units and distinguishing between enemy-launched warheads and friendly-launched warheads. The FAE/MDW-01 takes full advantage of its high rate of fire and fast response time, allowing it to track multiple incoming threats at a time.
  • Collaborative Defense - The FAE/MDW-01 is capable of networking with other point-defense systems in the area, to better collaborate with friendly units, save ammunition, and provide better defensive coverage. It can also warn allied units of incoming grenades, missiles, or target lock attempts, allowing them to take appropriate defensive action.
  • I Sleep - The FAE/MDW-01 is capable of functioning automatically, even when the operator or host unit is literally asleep or dead.
  • Speed - The nano missiles have a very high speed almost by necessity, allowing them to intercept especially fast projectiles before they can reach their target. They are also capable of executing sharp maneuvers to keep up with especially evasive warheads.
  • Intelligence - The oversight computer brain is very intelligent and is capable of making snap decisions with data from its own sensors and that of the host unit. There are situations where it will choose not to intercept a grenade if it is already close to civilians or friendly assets, to allow them time to escape its blast radius. Alternatively, it may also choose when to intercept an incoming warhead, in order to mitigate damage to life and property. These are only two out of countless examples of the circumstances and decisions it can operate within under chaotic battlefield conditions.
WEAKNESSES
  • Area of Effect - Warheads or explosives with a large area of effect can be an issue if not countered in time, as their explosive radius will in all likelihood be unabated or possibly even exacerbated by the intercepting nano missile.
  • Out of Class - Certain types of heavy, vehicle grade ordnance can more easily shrug off the trauma inflicted by the warhead’s concussive charge. In general, the FAE/MDW-01 is most effective against infantry-launched warheads, with larger warheads demanding proportionally more nano missiles to successfully intercept.
  • Electronic Warfare - Intense, concentrated jamming can diminish the effectiveness of the FAE/MDW-01, especially if the host unit lacks a robust electronics suite capable of filtering out or negating jamming signatures.
  • Surge - While the the FAE/MDW-01’s robustness ultimately relies on the host unit’s defenses, EMP/Ion-based assaults can potentially disable or diminish the FAE/MDW-01 to varying degrees, depending on the power quotient, proximity of the initial discharge to the device, along with a host of other factors.
  • Reloading - Each nano missile must be manually loaded into the launchers. As such, reloading can be extremely difficult and time-consuming, especially under fire.
  • Ammunition Limit - Unlike most energy-based point-defense systems, nano missiles require physical ammunition which must be carried by the operator or a supply unit. Naturally, there are limits as to how much can be ferried into battle, due to factors such as weight, space, convenience, safety, comfort, Etc.
DESCRIPTION
With missiles and warhead-based threats being a near-constant danger to infantry, First United Astral Engineering conceptualized the FAE/MDW-01 Active Defense System, effectively a scaled-down point-defense system most often found on vehicles and ships, utilizing nano missiles similar in caliber to a typical Mandalorian whistling bird. While it is typically mounted on a gauntlet, the FAE/MDW-01 can also be mounted on any place where a hardpoint is available, making it compatible with most types of personal armor.

In developing the FAE/MDW-01, the decision to use nano missiles over lasers or another type of energy weapon ultimately came down to all-aspect functionality, as the nano missiles were capable of intercepting warheads no matter their position relative to the host unit. Unfortunately, this comes at the cost of needing to carry physical ammunition, in addition to long reloads. Nevertheless, this was judged to be worth it, given the heightened mobility of infantry units in the modern battlefield, making such a capability necessary.

All in all, the FAE/MDW-01 is hoped to serve as an extra layer of defense for infantry units beyond personal energy shields, making them more resilient in the face of certain threats.
