Chaos echoed through the stone and wood home.

Specifically, the kitchen.

The family was gathering to meet Balun’s student, an idea brought up by his father in some meeting with his brother some time ago. Makai didn’t know the details, just that his home had been chosen as the meeting point. The half-Galan was more surprised this was actually occurring and this student was real. He and Persephone originally thought Balun had made up the entire student story.

Still could have. Maybe he bribed some poor unexpecting kid to come along.

The whistle of the tea kettle brought him out of those thoughts. His wife, now pregnant with their second, was going through the same nausea as before. Pouring hot water into a large thermos and adding tea bags, he passed the task of delivery off to Persephone. Home from university, the teenager inspected the thermos before disappearing, as if he did it wrong.

Gaze flicked to the kitchen island. He had put his father and both kids to work assisting with meal prep. All three were well used to the routine.

“Papa, does this mean I have to go to my teacher’s house for dinner?”

Chuckling, Makai shook his head.

“No. This is different, how Jedi do things. Although we could have your teacher over, it may be seen as favoritism.”

“Oh. Good.” Little tongue stuck out as Phoebe went back to her task of cutting vegetables with her child-safe knife, content in the answer.

If Judah could pick a different time for this meeting, he would have. Most of the afternoon he had been entertaining the kids or walking up and down the stairs checking on his daughter-in-law. Yet it seemed they were in some sort of Jedi battle lull with no chance of being rescheduled for a reasonable time.

So he had stepped in with some of the cooking. Not the risotto, that was Makai’s thing, but roast nuna with herbs was his task, along with keeping an eye on the grandchildren and their vegetable chopping.

“Poor kid may not even be here long.”

“Why?”

“The family can be…a lot.” Judah reached out and squeezed Kellan’s shoulder, careful not to jostle the boy. “Bet you’re excited to see your Dad though. Maybe you can show him that aquarium you and Uncle Mak have been setting up.”

Meeting his family for an evening may have seemed to be crossing the line between personal and professional boundaries, yet despite the apprehension that Balun felt about the evening, he believed that in the end, it would be beneficial for Cerys Dyn Cerys Dyn to witness the family dynamic, an environment of love and constant support for one another, regardless of the amount of bickering, arguing and overall drama's that filled the Dashiell's history of events such as these.

Being the only Force-User among the Dashiells could be difficult at times, especially when attending family dinners. Questions of what Balun had been up to of late, usually pertaining to stories of Jedi-related tasks, met with looks of indifference, scepticism, and disappointment; And while this sounded all very negative, the fact remained that despite their differences of views, Balun was inseparable from his family. There wasn't a single reason that could give him cause to look away, always ready to drop things at a moment's notice should they need anything of him, and he believed they felt the same. This was what it meant to be part of a family.

He and Cerys Dyn would arrive via the Liberty's Edge, settling down upon the outer edge of the Arkuhn Farm, allowing time on the walk towards the house so that Balun could give Cerys a sense of what to expect; "I'm assuming you've likely been dreading this but despite whatever reservations you have about this evening, I think you'll get along well with my brother. He also likes to give me a lot of chit, about pretty much everything" Balun informed Cerys with a bit of a dry laugh as he started moving down the path towards Makai Dashiell Makai Dashiell and Myra Arceneau Dashiell Myra Arceneau Dashiell 's residence; "I should forewarn you that our family events have a history of going south, always the odd family drama and what not but that's all part of the experience. Hopefully by the end of the evening you'll see why I've dragged you along for the evening".

Cerys wasn't raised in a family environment such as this, as Ala Quin Ala Quin described when she informed Balun of his Apprentice's background. Instead, she had been brought up under the influence of a cult, where she had learned that it was better to show apathy than it was to allow oneself to hold attachments to others. Even by Jedi standards, whoever had raised Cerys took a radical approach to personal relationships, and when the two had first been introduced to one another, it had taken a long time to truly get Cerys to entertain the idea of an actual discussion with Balun. Even now, Cerys refused to consider the two being friends, which in itself was in stark contrast to Balun's openly friendly nature with others, even strangers.

"I didn't meet my Father and Brother until I was roughly eighteen or nineteen, but getting to know them and the rest of the family changed my life for the better. It may be unorthodox, but I'm hoping that exposing you to my family life might encourage you to see the benefits that close, trusted relationships such as friends and family can bring to your own life".

Kellan grinned back up at his grandfather from his seat at the kitchen counter. In front of him was a chopping block where he had been carefully cutting up the vegetables provided by Makai Dashiell Makai Dashiell . It had been a couple of weeks since his Dad's last visit; Kellan had been living with his Uncle Mak and Aunt Myra since being enrolled on the Agricorps curriculum under the Jedi Order. This way, he got to work the farm on Lythos IX, working alongside other professionals in the trade under his Uncle's agricultural enterprise, all while furthering his education as a Jedi too. Naturally, Kellan didn't understand much of it, only that he got to have fun getting his hands dirty while his Dad had been the one to organise it all with his family and the Jedi back on Naboo.

"Yeah, can't wait!"

Knowing that he was going to see his Pa today, though, had been a wondrous surprise when he'd been told. It had made the week go much more slowly in the evenings, though he had the daily tasks to keep him distracted. Almost five years old, he had learned a lot in the past month, and even on the weekends, Uncle Mak and Aunt Myra had him and his cousin Phoebe studying under private tutors. Kellan didn't know many other kids his age, so he didn't really understand that he was getting ahead of the learning curve for the average youngling of four years old. The bright side, however, was that he always had something to do. Always keeping busy, and when not doing chores and learning, he was off playing with his best friend Pheebs.

"Do you think his friend will like me? Dad didn't have a Padawan when I was going there". By there, Kellan meant the days when he was going to and from Shiraya's Sanctuary with his father every morning and late evening. They would travel together from Jhaessa Prime, rarely staying overnight on Naboo. When doing so, Kellan always got to stay up late and play with the other Padawan Learners his age.

He couldn't help but feel a little nervous, though. It was silly, as his father was a Jedi Knight now and his Padawan learned from him just as Balun had taught Kellan a great deal, but even still, Kellan wanted whoever they were to like him. Not only would it make his father happy, but it also came from a place of deep personal insecurity.

"I do not speak anything that is not deserved," Cerys said. Her tone was pert, and clearly unimpressed. Along with Balun Dashiell's penitent for smoking, his insistence on casual vulgarity was rather off putting. She was glad for it. He needed some off-putting characteristics to keep his ego in check.

To be entirely honest, he was entirely correct. Cerys was nervous. Beyond nervous even. Given the casual declration of attachment that Balun had made early on in their training together, this had all the overtones of something she had heard about. Cerys believed it to be called "meeting the family". The title for the story telling trope seemed appropriate enough, but not in this case. In this case it was pure absurdity. She was not his to flaunt. She was a Jedi Padawan, and likely his better with a lightsaber at this stage. Force, he smelled like cigars.

"You can rest assured, Master," Cerys said. "I will not be the cause of any 'southing' of this meeting. If I cannot say anything pleasant and affirming, I shall not speak." It seemed like a reasonable deal. Surely the ramifications of silence could not be that bad.

Half way down the path towards the door, Cerys felt her chest tightening. Why did she care so much about the approval of these people. They were his family, and she truly only cared for him as an associate of the Order. This was just foolishness, and certainly beyond the normal anxiety she felt for meeting new people.

"You are greatly blessed to know your family," Cerys said, only partly meaning the statement. Such attachments were still the antithesis of her upbringing. That was until she was forced to accept the reality of her parentage. Sometimes, like now, it made her wish she could just...run away.

"Pfft, if the friend doesn't like you then she isn't worth knowing," Thessa piped up. The speckled aqua-scales on her cheek stretching gently into a smile as she met Kellan Dashiell Kellan Dashiell 's eyes. "I mean with those mad choppin' skills," she pointed to the veggies he was in charge of.

"Now boys," her glance went to her ex, Judah Dashiell Judah Dashiell , and then to her son, Makai Dashiell Makai Dashiell .

"Are you absolutely sure there is nothing I can help with?"

It was safer for everyone that she'd been banned from cooking. The last holiday meal...let's just say they'd had to call the fire deputies. Nearly burned down her own place when she hosted them all over for Life Day. This time, she'd ordered desserts from a local bakery. Cakes and pies, sitting in their boxes and stacked in the corner and ready to go.

"Your Nana is right. If this person doesn't like you then there's no reason to busy yourself with worry. In a universe full of people, best not to waste your time on the ones who don't like you. Student of your father or not."

Judah referred to his ex as Kellan's grandmother despite no blood relation. It was one of those tricky things with children and with the disposition of the boy being sensitive, it was just prudent. Given Makai was watching Kellan for the foreseeable future and that Thessa often assisted in watching the children, it just made sense.

"However, I would hazard there won't be a problem."
Placing the nuna in the oven to roast, Judah gave a short laugh. " Oh gods no. We don't need a fire."

"Nana started a fire? While cooking?" Phoebe paused, looking concerned, eyes wide as she turned to her grandmother. "On purpose or on accident?"

"On accident. Your Nana is uncoordinated. Explains a lot about your Papa, doesn't it."

"It really does."

"I spent the majority of my life without one, so yes, I certainly agree", Balun replied, glancing at Cerys Dyn Cerys Dyn as they arrived at the front door to Makai Dashiell Makai Dashiell 's family residence; "All that they know is that you're my Apprentice. I informed my father that the title doesn't quite match the role, given we're of the same age and there's no gap between our abilities as there typically would be between Master and Student," he elaborated so that Cerys had some idea of what she was walking into as far as the family's expectations and opinions were concerned; "They will be glad to meet you".

Rather than wrapping his knuckles against the door, Balun simply reached for the handle and opened it up as he stepped inside, a clear sign of his comfort and sense of belonging around his brother's property. There were no formalities required. The Dashiells were learned in dining etiquette for formal evenings, yet when it came to family dinners, Balun had always been his casual, comfortable self. "Try to be yourself and enjoy the evening, Cerys; you'll do fine", he encouraged her before moving on inside and calling out to let the others know of their arrival.

"HEY GUYS, WE'RE HERE", he shouted ahead, soon moving to take his boots off and place them alongside the wall next to everyone else's. The first response Balun anticipated was his son rushing to greet them. It'd been a couple of weeks since he had seen his boy, and he had missed Kellan greatly. The thought made him grin to himself as he began down the hallway towards the kitchen, the question of what Cerys might think when meeting his son soon to follow. The Togruta Jedi was used to younglings and adolescents running about the Jedi Temple, thus Balun expected she'd have no trouble navigating the young boy's questions and curiosity. It would no doubt be the adults that she would feel the greatest pressure.

Kellan listened to Nana Thessa Kai Thessa Kai and grinned at the praise towards his chopping up the vegetables; his attention quickly turned to the cutting board to look at his hard work, and he felt a sense of pride that he was doing his job well. Soon enough, his Pop voiced agreement with Nana Kai and having the two of them offer their support put the young boy at ease. Looking back to Thessa Kai, Kellan left the knife upon the kitchen counter and turned to her, wrapping his arms around her waist. It might have been a juvenile and unnecessary show of appreciation, but Kellan hugged her all the same. She was, after all, family; "Thanks, Nana".

Judah Dashiell Judah Dashiell 's comment about setting a fire quickly changed the pace of their conversation, and Kellan looked up at Thessa with wide eyes "Your dinner nearly burned down the house?!" he asked in amazement, trying to picture it in his head. His dad had taught him that cooking could be dangerous if you didn't have an adult with you, and Kellan had never actually used a cooker. He had his Dad for that stuff before he moved into his Uncle and Aunt's house. Pheobe started to ask questions too, causing Kellan to step away from his Nan and look between them as he listened with great interest.

"HEY GUYS, WE'RE HERE"

"Dad's here!" Balun exclaimed excitedly as soon as he heard Balun's voice, quickly rushing away from the kitchen bench (but not running because running in the kitchen was a no-no). As soon as he reached the corridor and saw his father, Kellan couldn't restrain himself anymore; he burst into a run for his father and practically jumped into him with open arms, wrapping them tightly around Balun Dashiell Balun Dashiell . The tendril crown atop his head wriggled and writhed, a display of his excitement and happiness.

"I've missed you heaps, Dad!"

Your Nana is uncoordinated. Explains a lot about your Papa, doesn't it."

An aqua brow lofted in Judah's direction. The corner of her mouth threatening to twitch. "Didn't your Grandpa ever tell you how I was the best pilot in our x-wing squadron? Coordinated plenty. Juuuuuust not in the kitchen."

"Oomph," she looked down at Kellan Dashiell Kellan Dashiell as he launched himself at her. Giving him a tight squeeze back before he extracted himself to run to his father. Thessa grabbed some plates on the counter, plannng to set the table and paused next to Judah and Makai. Voice lowered. "So, this guest Balun is bringing. Are they like...together-together?" Eye-brows waggled once.

"If you say so Nana." Phoebe scrambled down from her perch of vegetable chopping upon hearing her uncles voice. This gave the adults a chance to gossip about the situation, plus place everything in the oven before the guest made her way in. Makai watched his daughter scramble away as his mother whispered her question.

"Don't think so. Told him to just have sex with her and get it over with but he didn't appreciate my advice." Shoulders shrugged. "I think he's scared of women to be honest. Not even sure how Kellan was conceived."

Leave it to his mother to think this was a 'visit the in-laws' type dinner.

Skipping to the front door, Phoebe had taken it upon herself to be the official greeter. Her uncle was old news, seeing him a few weeks ago and imagining she would see him again within another two months or so. Instead her little hand went out to the Tortuga in greeting. A true businesswoman or politician in the making.

"Hi, I'm Phoebe. Welcome."

o4emCfa.png

"All that they know is that you are my apprentice."

Lekku twitching in annoyance, Cerys questioned just what Balun was not saying. Was he implying that she was more to him than just an apprentice. Her annoyance lent towards his explanation becoming a warbled, garbled flow of sound that she did not quite process.

She was still lost mid-spiral when he offered some semblance of encouragement. And then the door opened, Balun's greeting...Cerys' back stiffened further.

Did the child say, "Dad"?

An accusatory glare was thrown at Balun, but he was already swept up in embracing, who was admittedly, quite and adorable looking child. It did not help matters.

"Hi, I'm Phoebe. Welcome."

Another child. Was this one Balun's offspring too? Force, was this some odd way of getting her used to the idea of...

Her thoughts trailed off as protocol took charge.

"Greetings, Phoebe," Cerys said with a bow, and a proper, respectable shake of the child's hand, "I am Jedi Padawan Cerys Dyn. Former follower of the Oathwarden Path. Now of the Jedi Order on Naboo...I am apprentice to your...ah...father."

"Wrong idiotic Dashiell brother"

Persephone looked more than amused at the fact her cousin looked entirely uncomfortable. Was this not his idea? Empty thermos and mug remained in her hand as she had just come from checking on her adoptive mother. Shifting items to a free hand, a well-manicured pink nail polished hand darted out to greet the newcomer.

"Persephone, charmed."

"Ersie, manners."

"Right. Since my cousin seems to be ignoring you come in. I think everyone is in the kitchen. No sense lingering in front of the door, unless you're going to bolt. I mean, there's still time." Skeptical look passed to Balun once more. "I'm not sure how you do it."

Balun picked Kellan up into his arms, the young boy of four years carrying easily to be held against the left side of the man's front, a broad grin plastered across the Jedi's face as he looked upon his son with all the pride of a Father having gone a couple of weeks away from his flesh and blood. "Gods, I've missed you, Kiddo", He muttered, soon pressing his forehead against Kellan's in a more heartfelt and personal greeting, a gesture not often shared in front of others, particularly those outside of the family.

When it came to his boy, Balun had no shame, though. "Being good for Uncle Mak, I hope", he added with a little more clarity, the thought causing his attention to look down the hall deeper into the house. No doubt his brother was preparing the evening meal.

As Persephone Dashiell Persephone Dashiell started to lead them towards the others, followed by Pheobe, Balun let his son down to go after them, sparing a glance at Cerys Dyn Cerys Dyn and offering a slightly wry smile accompanied by a shrug of his right shoulder. The conversation of his son had never come up before, but following their greeting, it was certainly bound to. All the same, he was glad to have Cerys there to meet his family. To gain a bit more insight into what made Balun the person he was and gave him the drive to live a life filled with such risks, knowing that those he loved, such as the people she was soon to meet, could be affected by the result of the Jedi Order's efforts out there.

"You're looking well, Persie. Still got that sharp tongue, I see. I guess things haven't changed too much since I last saw ya" Balun grinned as he followed at the rear of the group, offering his form of greeting to his adopted niece. Frankly, he didn't think anything of the adoption. She was blood as far as he was concerned, but never raised the subject out of consideration for the nature of the opposite sex when it came to such things. Balun had always had a knack for accidentally placing his foot in his mouth, even with the best of intentions; thus it was easier to stay quiet when it came to certain subjects.

Judah leaned close to his ex to whisper, trying to give her some background context. His ex-wife was less familiar with Balun and his antics, and she was slowly becoming acquainted with Kellan as the boy had been watched by her. An odd mix of family but in a galaxy so large and harsh, it was wise to keep those connected close.

"I think he told her something but it didn't land well. You know how bad us Dashiell men are at flirting."

Hearing rustling, voices, and the thump of his grandchildren's feet, Judah straightened up. Their guest was coming and it wasn't wise to be caught gossiping about Balun and his student. In many ways Balun was ten times more sensitive than Makai, a product of his upbringing and unfamiliar place in the family.

As the group rounded the corner, Judah met them halfway around the kitchen island, moving to hug Balun first. The old salvager gave him a tight squeeze and pat on his back before focusing on the newcomer. Hand stretched out.

"Judah Dashiell, the guy responsible for all your heartache."
He chuckled then turned halfway "Behind me is my ex-wife Thessa and Makai, he's Balun's half-brother."

"I had seriously considered it," Cerys mumbled for only Persephone's ears after accepting her greeting. It would not have been the first time that Balun Dashiell had caused her to "bolt", and she seemed to wonder if it would not be the last...either.

The Togruta tried so very hard not to scowl at the interaction between Balun and the child — his son. It was something for which she would have previously sharply rebuked him for. Now, she just felt awkward about it. He would likely sense as much. But it was not the child's fault.

"It is a pleasure to meet you, Kellan," she offered to the child.

Upon meeting the miner, Cerys simply bowed and accepted the handshake.

"Thank you for your hospitality. And I do not understand to which heart ache you refer..." She appeared genuinely confused, and glanced at Balun with a look of subtle accusation. Had he said something more to his family.

Looking over Judah's shoulder, she offered a small wave of her fingers towards the others in the room. But she had questions, so she looped her arm around Judah's and pulled him aside.

"I do not wish to be rude...as I do not understand your family dynamics," she said, her tone in a quite conspiratorial whisper, "but it will bother me all night...because I feel bad...that Balun is taking responsibility for me...while giving you all the responsibility of raising his own son...that seems..." Cerys sighed, realising she was likely overstepping, but the akwardness of the realisation was simply too much to bear.

"Thanks for filling me in," she nudged Judah's shoulder with her own before he stepped away to play grand host. He'd always been good at working rooms. Hosting things. Meeting people. She found her eyes lingering on his back, a stupid little smile on her face before she straigthened and threw one arm over her son's shoulders.

"We need to catch up sometime, kid. Heard you've been busy." A light squeeze before she released him. Her hand going to mess up his hair like he was still a teenager before she brought the plates to the table and began setting things.

A polite and evidently pleased smile was offered in response to Cerys Dyn Cerys Dyn 's greeting, apparently happy with himself for putting on a good first impression. He grinned a little to himself as he followed after Pheobe mostly, though she seemed to be following his older cousin Persephone Dashiell Persephone Dashiell .

It would be no doubt apparent due to the shared appearance of the boy that he held several traits that differed from his father, and though his family had learned to navigate his particular abilities, their Togruta guest could not, for example, know of his acute hearing. Kellan could hear practically every conversation within the household, though his father had been working on helping him hone his focus to phase out the outside noise for the sake of other people's privacy, accompanied by his and Makai Dashiell Makai Dashiell 's consistent reminding the boy of the importance of manners, consideration and empathy.

All this to say that while Cerys may have pulled Judah Dashiell Judah Dashiell out of earshot of Kellan's father, the boy did, in fact, hear everything. It hadn't been intentional, merely the excitement and intrigue of their guest -- his father's apprentice speaking with one of Kellan's favourite people of all time, his Grandpop.

There was a moment when he felt the impulse to talk about his learning at the Temple on Naboo, when he and his Dad would go back and forth between there and home on Jhaessa Prime at the start and end of each day, to relate and share Jedi talk with Cerys. But there were those manners to consider, and he needed to let them talk privately.

So, instead of focusing on the two, he did what he had learned and tried to phase them out, instead using one of his other heightened senses and immediately picking up on the various scents of food being prepped by his Uncle Makai, still following Phoebe and being unable to stifle a giggle as his dad seemed to look toward the adult cabinet in the kitchen first. The one with the special drinks the younglings weren't allowed.

A wave to Balun Dashiell. "You've got a good kid." She knew he didn't need to be told. "Hi, I'm Thessa." She offered her hand to Cerys Dyn who seemed mighty uncomfortable. "Glad you could make it. Don't let the Dashiell boys run you over."

Dipping his head with a heartfelt smile, his hands open at his sides, he greeted Thessa Kai Thessa Kai as he would any of the older generation of Dashiell's that he cared for and respected. She was his brother's mother, yet while Balun and Thessa weren't quite as close as they could have been given his late coming to the family tree, he still looked to her as a mother figure, always ready to offer his time were she to need or want it. "It's great to see you, Thessa. Feels like it's been a while, hasn't it?"

Looking to his son, Kellan Dashiell Kellan Dashiell , Balun glanced back at Thessa and nodded in agreement. "He continues to be my pride and joy, and he seems to grow faster than I can keep up with. I'm happy to report he's got the best of me, none of my flaws as of yet" Balun chuckled softly before glancing across to spot his Padawan and his father stepping away.

"Gods, that's not going to go in my favour," Balun muttered under his breath, bemusement laced with scepticism as he watched Cerys Dyn Cerys Dyn not-so-subtly lure Judah Dashiell Judah Dashiell away from the pack to pick his brain. Force only knew what they would talk about, but his Apprentice was already deeply frustrated and distant with Balun, and his Dad hadn't exactly been one to understand or always approve of his life choices. There was plenty he could tell Cerys that could lead to some interesting and difficult discussions in the immediate future, but for whatever was to be said, Balun would trust in the old man and not bait his breath worrying about things yet to pass. Or try at least.

Wandering on into the kitchen following the rest of the family, Balun's face brightened at the sight of his rascal brother Makai Dashiell Makai Dashiell ; "Good grife, is Myra letting you use real knives now brother? My Makai is all grown up" Balun goaded him with all the jest and brotherly bravado that was common for the pair, moving to approach and opening his arms to hug the man; "Come on then, bring it in bro...-Then you can pour me a whiskey; I'm likely going to need it tonight".

"Heartache for his mere existence."

Judah chuckled at his own lame joke regarding Balun. To be objective he wasn't so sure if his youngest son was cut out to be an instructor at such a young age.

As Cerys spoke, Judah knew it would catch the ear of Kellan. He assumed one, the woman wasn't often around children. Two, she had zero idea about his grandson and his ability to hear over longer distances than a normal child. Even if Kel did have a normal hearing range, children often had a way of trying to piece together information.

Tapping his ear, he tipped his head towards Kellan in a silent gesture.

"Let's go out back, right down this hall."

Leading her down a hall and out a set of doors, coming to settle on a stone patio behind the home. The lake and a vast amount of forest and farm fields were their only company.

Once the door was shut, he began, hands in his pockets.

"Permission to be frank?" He didn't wait for an acknowledgement. "Kellan is safer with Makai and Myra. Both physically and mentally. My eldest argued his brother for some time to let Kellan live in a traditional family unit, so this wasn't something Balun sprung on us last moment."
