The ancient New Class modernization program had crafted several warships worthy of repute, whose design legacies were sadly discounted due to the immense amount of allocated resources that were required for their creation. Because credits were hard to come by for the nascent New Republic, especially as the Civil War took its toll upon the Galaxy entire, it wasn’t surprising to note that the program was cancelled after several of these designs were made. Despite the massive cost attributed to these warships, the New Class vessels had proven themselves time and again when pitted against hostile forces. It was believed that these warships were some of the few that managed to stand their ground against the extragalactic invaders, when all others were forced to flee for their lives. With such a legacy attributed to their design, it was little wonder that the Republic Engineering Corporation of the present sought to emulate their past successes.
Thus, the Defender II - Class Assault Carrier was born. While it was visually identical to the previous iteration of the design, the Defender II was outfitted with a veritable host of modern improvements and advancements. The first among these improvements were increasing the armament, as the first iteration had naught but twenty anti-starfighter laser cannons to its name. While potent for it’s time, the Carrier was heavily dependent on having a dedicated escort to operate effectively on the spatial battlefield. Those turrets would’ve been ineffective in the modern era, as they were outmatched by the technical advances woven into the countless designs of starfighters populating the stars.
So, with an expanded armament and mission profile thereafter, the Defender II would prove itself considerably in comparison to its previous incarnation.
While the expanded armament was significantly better than the first iteration of the Defender - Class, the complement of weapon arrays paled in comparison to even the most average of Cruiser-classified warships. However, with that being said, what the Defender II had in its possession was enough to dissuade Pirate warships from attacking, and even possibly some battle-hardened Commanders. In addition, that aforementioned armament would even assist an allied fleet as they advanced across the spatial battlefront. That wasn’t even mentioning the capabilities of the Defender II as a Starfighter Carrier.
Like the previous iteration of the Carrier, the Defender II was capable of playing host to over three wings (New Republic-style) of strike craft; ranging from the smallest of attack craft to the larger auxiliary vessels. Due to the countless advancements of the modern age, the flight decks and storage racks of the Carrier were wholly modular. These changes to the flight deck and the hangar(s) thereafter allowed the second iteration of the Defender to equip itself with various housings and berths for strike-craft - effectively changing the warship’s mission profile to suit the needs of the operation. With such versatility in hand, the Defender II makes for a perfect addition to an allied battleline.
