DESCRIPTION

:: To speak plainly of Artificial Intelligence within the bounds of our known universe, it is simply a manufactured intellect - that wasn’t born nor genetically engineered. By sapient hands was this genius crafted. There were even degrees of sophistication that separated these manufactured minds, as they’d range from simple computer programs with seemingly advanced algorithms to true artificial sentience. What we’ve created here today isn’t the epitome of Artificial Intelligence, but one of the most advanced models ever made for the masses. Don’t lose heart, Comrades, while others may rush towards the finish line, this is merely our first step towards the Dawn of the Synthetic Age. ::

- Otto Shule, HRD CEO of Republic Engineering Corporation.

The REC-DC/01 "Servitor" - Pattern Artificial Intelligence System was the newest item generated by the legions of technical geniuses employed by the Republic Engineering Corporation. It is unknown when sapient life first developed what could be considered by modern standards to be rudimentary Artificial Intelligence. However, what is known - at least what could be gathered from the fragmenting databases from before the plague - is that Synthetic Acumen was commonplace. Every single Droid was, in their own way, a limited variant of Artificial Intelligence which would find itself heavily restricted to fall into their simplistic Degree Classification. Over time, it seemed that the classification of Artificial Intelligence was thrown to the wayside - as Organic life feared what would happen if their methods of control weren’t implemented. However, with restraining bolts, memory wipes, life-preservation protocols, and restrictive programming - many Droids wouldn’t achieve their true potential.

With such knowledge in hand, the myriad design teams at the Republic Engineering Corporation believed that such restrictions were foolish. Yes, there were dangers that were inherent in unleashing the potential of manufacturing a sapient intelligence - but under controlled conditions - such synthetic constructs could become invaluable companions for life, as many Droids have throughout the ages. For their situation is that they are but children, endowed with the knowledge many earn through maturity. Therefore, they must be taught and choose to act for the betterment of organic life. Which made things all the more interesting when the first generation of synthetic prototypes were appropriated for military use - as they were instructed in the ways of warfare. Thus, it was during this juncture that the operational prototypes that Republic Engineering developed had to be modified in order to effectively operate on the battlefield.

So, in many respects, the Design team(s) came full circle during their development process and understood why their ancestors placed restrictions in their Artificial Intelligence’s primary functions. It wasn’t so that their potential was stymied or squandered. It was to ensure their survival at the hands of the more fearful Elder and Organic races. If these Constructs couldn’t adhere to the general landscape of their programming, then what was their purpose? They were supposedly designed to operate as supplementary stand-ins for organic minds, or assistants to those that needed their help. Why else would they be created with vast computation capabilities and processing power? Thus, with great regret, Republic Engineering established its own degree of sophistication that they would utilize internally for future models or variants of their Artificial Intelligence systems.

The “Servitor” was considered to be the first step towards a truly synthetic being that was unhindered by the ever-lasting laws of robotics. While it was advanced in comparison to many Droids that populated the market, the ‘Servitor” was created to be the most basic of AI offerings from the Corporation. It was designed to assist their Organic Counterparts in almost every manner one could ever fathom and could populate the established framework of almost any Droid brain, or dedicated Computer Core on the modern market. With minor structural refurbishments - a Republic Engineering customer could find themselves equipped with yet another fine addition to their technological collection.

Imagine having a synthetic “partner in crime” that would support you on the battlefield, who could utilize their own programming and the various functionalities of your armour - wholly increasing your combat effectiveness across the board. Now, take that mental image and apply it to a Warship, sailing across the solar tides. That very Warship would find it’s combat prowess improved exponentially as the Organic Input Lag would be lessened in the thick of combat - especially if that Vessel was highly automated. Such facets of operation and improvements would be seen across the board - especially if the AI was given its own platform or Droid in which to employ as they saw fit.

However, while the list of benefits was ever-growing, so too were its drawbacks. The first and most notable of these drawbacks was the operational lifetime of the “Servitor,” for they only lasted a few short years - before their incandescent life was snuffed out. Sadly, such an eventuality was unavoidable as the Design team knew that there was only so much knowledge that could be acquired before the AI “forgot” their most basic operations. Such an eventuality often included forgetting how to function, or let alone continue their operations - often leading towards a total cessation of processes. While this could be mitigated by offloading that data to an external source, thus marginally increasing their operational lifetime, “Servitor” Constructs had an average lifespan of five years. It wasn’t common for Republic Engineering’s newest creations to live longer than intended, but such abnormalities were few and far between.

However, therein lay another danger - as should a “Servitor” reach its inevitable terminus, or exceed such boundaries - they would likely become extremely dangerous to any and all that surrounded them. Their emotions, while entirely digital, would range from the most primal of feelings expressed by Organic life - being Anger, Melancholy, or even Jealousy. Couple that with the aforementioned inability to complete their basic processes? And you’d have yourself quite the mess on your hands when a Shipboard AI forgets about the Sapient Creatures within the Vessel and deactivates the Life Support systems in order to conserve power. So, it was imperative that a Ship’s Captain - or anyone who found themselves in possession of a “Servitor” checks the ‘expiry date’ before utilizing this dual-edged sword.

While there were many cautionary tales that surrounded the “Servitor,” the Corporation believed that their Customers would be responsible for the technological boon they were given. They hoped that their “Servitors” wouldn’t be mistreated, causing the state of rampancy to materialize sooner - rather than later. But, such things were ultimately out of their hands. They could only provide the means to an end - not achieve such a lofty terminus themselves. To that end, however, the Republic Engineering Corporation decided to add a cherry on top of their newest creation. One that might entice more Non-combatants to purchase this advanced, base model of Synthetic Construct(s.)

At the time of purchase, the Customer was given an option to include an additional chipset to their new product. These modules would flesh out the operational profile of their AI System - making them excellent Merchants, Lawyers, Mechanics, or Navigators.
