Discussion Building a Healthier Community

I'll quit when Destiny 3 comes out

In all seriousness, lemme edit this to give a serious answer as well

  • What things currently make you want to keep writing here? The people I write with. Even then, I'm mostly on the outs when it comes to writing since I haven't vibed with the state of the Galaxy RP rn
  • What things make you disengage, participate less, or consider leaving? To carry on with my point above, I just struggle to find a place to write my light side/heroic muse. I'm not overly fussed with it though. I can't be the change I want to be so I'm not pushing it that much. I'll lurk, see if i can get my chance, if I can't? Idk.
  • Are there reasonable changes that would make the site or community healthier to participate in? I don't like change. So nothing.
  • What are we already doing well that we should make sure we don't lose? Not forcing change.
  • If you could make one realistic change that might help retain writers, what would it be? Nothing. People all have different tastes and different wants to make them stay. There's no one change I could suggest that would help.

In the past an issue I had was an IC specified remark, being taken for OOC feelings. It was awkward, blew up, and no clarity I offered was accepted. It flabbergasted me, but its in the past. You cannot read your writing to someone else with the elocution you meant for it. Some people will read into things, in a way not intended.

I have also had someone come after me IC, because they didn't like who I write with and am friends with ooc. <.< Life is too short to be bothered.

We talked about writers gravitating towards other people who mesh. I have friends I can hardly write good threads with because our writing styles are quite different. I have also known middle school age kids who could match my energy as well. But with me, a shared eloquence tends to be what originally draws writers together from the start.

I am here because I have been writing for (here it comes...the MATH) fourty-five years. Holy crap; right?! I love learning from everyone where I am lacking. I know what it is mostly, and still haven't improved at all, but I KNOW NOW what it is!

Also, I probably don't always follow the rules because I never have any idea what is going on. I don't have answers for all those questions apart from what everyone else shared. My Besties know who they are <3 and there is always room for more!

I have not written here in a while now, and despite a recent attempt to come back, I was quickly reminded why I left. There has been a lack of change, despite declarations from certain individuals claiming to turn over a new leaf in regards to said issues. It is, in a word, tiresome. But, in an effort to approach this topic from a more serious perspective, and in good faith instead of writing a troll response, here are my answers.
  • What things currently make you want to keep writing here?
    • I have always loved the setting here, and there are many mechanics and writing opportunities that are incredibly rare elsewhere. It's what made me fall in love with Chaos in the first place. There is something to be said about the lore environment that has been built here, and the site's accomplishments cannot be understated. I have developed true friendships here, and have found a great community of people that I have been able to continue building amazing, epic stories with.
  • What things make you disengage, participate less, or consider leaving?
    • Well, I did already leave (lol), but I can tell you the reasons why. There has been a consistent level of inconsistency in the usage of rules and conduct. Not all are created equal here, and in an environment where we are meant to collaborate, that is not a way to promote collaborative writing. And before anyone tries to say it, no, this does not come from a place of salt. Ask anyone and they will tell you that I have always tried my best to separate myself from that. Am I perfect? Of course not, but none of us are. But for me, writing always came first, as it should for all of us. That is something that still gets preached here, but not practiced more often than not. I say this because, as I mentioned earlier, I do have a lot of love for this site, and in a perfect world, these words would be heeded and things would improve. But they likely won't, and that is genuinely a shame.
  • Are there reasonable changes that would make the site or community healthier to participate in?
    • Many, to be perfectly honest. Rework the judging process. Maybe put a term limit on RPJs, and give them a more prominent role in the process over staff. Or maybe leave it up to some other factor. And furthermore, maybe have a vetting process for potential MFOs. They need to understand RAW, and if they do not, they should not be an MFO. I'm not going to pretend to have all of the answers, but the fact of the matter is that these conversations of "what to do next" never actually get seen through to the end. They get shut down and forced to fizzle out. I'm not saying that's any particular person's fault, but that's what I have seen with my own eyes. There needs to be a greater adherence to RAW, and when I say that, I direct that to everyone. And yes, I mean everyone. There has never been a consistent use or acknowledgement of site rules and conduct, and that must change before anything can improve.
  • What are we already doing well that we should make sure we don't lose?
    • As I mentioned, I haven't been here for a while. but I know several people that still write here. I've read their work, and they are still trying to cultivate great stories and maintain some sort of positive trajectory for the site as a whole (whether or not they realize it). Those are the people that should be held onto. The writers that truly prioritize a collaborative, immersive, and fun experience for everyone are the individuals that should be looked at. You want solutions? Look to them. And I mean really look, because some of the people in your clique might not be in that list. It's a hard truth, but a truth nonetheless.
  • If you could make one realistic change that might help retain writers, what would it be?
    • Many, but it isn't anything that won't get dismissed, because it will require many people to take a deep look inward. It is all the way from the top, to the very bottom of activity. Every single individual needs to dig deep and confront the ways that they might actually not be contributing to a better future for Chaos (and trust me, some of y'all aren't going to, but you should). This site can continue to be a beacon of the last bastions of forum-based RP, but in order to do that, a lot of self-reflection of "how we got here" needs to transpire first.

I'm just gonna speak my mind a bit

So I'm a fairly new writer, started back in april of this year. So take what i saw however you want, I'm sure some might think I don't know what I'm talking about but oh well.

Please keep in mind that I'm not the best with words for things like this i apologize. Also i will very much use commas where i should be using periods, oh well. This is just how my brain works and

First:

  • What things currently make you want to keep writing here? The people I write with. I've met some great people and have fun writing with them, as well as the farwolrd/outcasts, y'all are great I've enjoyed the stories and threads that have been done/are doing. There as other people I enjoy writing with as well very much. Over all its great to me, love it
  • What things make you disengage, participate less, or consider leaving? Never thought about leaving. But as for participating less of disengaging. The way some people write pvp. I of course wont name names, I do not wnat to make anyone feel bad or anything, never do. But some do things that make no sense for a few possible reasons

    1. theres no real lore for it, as in it makes no sense to be able to do it, i believe we aren't allowed to make force powers yes? So i think if your gonna use some odd powers please link it. im ok with kind of bending the idea a bit, more so if it doesnt have much lore around it. like not a fully new thing but just tweaking or using it in a way that might not have been said but sounds possible for the power

    2. They have things/powers they shouldn't. take novac for example, i would love to give him a bunch of stuff to have fun with it. But I know that hes only a padawan, and i dont want him to be op in general. I've seen a few people have powers/abilities that don't make sense for them to have due to power level/skill/whatever. now yes I know this is not suppose to be realistic or make sense at tiems. like people can be a bit stronger then they realisticly should just to make things a bit more fun or whatever. But still I think that there should be some limits. I DO NOT want to or nor am I saying that people should be limited, again I'm not the best with words for things like this i apologize.

    3. Theres some tech that i just think truly make no sense, again i want people to have fun, make fun unquie things, make cool things. But some things truly are..lets say weird since i DO NOT want to be mean. and also the way people use them at times, I've seen times of vehicles or ships tanking hits the very much should not, or doing damage they very much should not, that part less since that would be calling hits so thats not nearly as much. Now yes only the poster taking the damage can choose what happens when a attack comes their way. But still there should at least be better ways for the attack to not do what it should. Of course rule of cool is there at times dont get me wrong.
  • Are there reasonable changes that would make the site or community healthier to participate in? There most likely are but i can not think of any off the top of my head sorry
  • What are we already doing well that we should make sure we don't lose? There's also a lot that I can't think of off the top of my head
  • If you could make one realistic change that might help retain writers, what would it be? see above

Now heres where i put my random thoughts

No matter what i say I do love it here. It's great. I never thought I'd be a writer, EVER. But here I am, having a great time. I love star wars the amount of multi hour long random lore facts vids I've watch only help to prove that lol.

When i first joined i was worried because of my adhd and autism. I thought I wouldn't be good at it, that people wouldn't want to rp with me or like my posts. But no, I've had people tell me they enjoy writing with me, they like my posts and to those people thank you it means so much to me.

But I've noticed a lot of things, I'll be putting random things here so do NOT expect and kind of cohesiveness, sorry lol. I've noticed theres been quite a few times that i or others post a looking for group, not a single person reacts. now theres hundreds if not thousands of reasons people wouldn't, but still a bit odd at times. Or people will be like "yea i want to do a thread with you." then nothing happens becasue no one ever makes a first post. now is that fifty fifty yes, or more of a split depending on how many people are involved. But like I've had a lot of people say tehy want to then nothing ever happens. Now these are little things yes but they do kinda suck. I am not saying you should go rp with anyone and everyone no. some people you just dont want to interact with and thats perfectly fine.

I know theres a lot more i wanted to say but I can not for the life of me remember so i may post again or edit this.

All in all I love it here, i enjoy writing with so many of y'all and theres more people i would love to write with tho im not one to dm people asking cuz i get nervous/kinda hold people i see as good writers on a pedestal and get worried lol. So please don't take anything i say the wrong way. if you think you know who I'm talking about or anything. I'm not. I am not thinking of any one person or people or group.

To be honest, very nervous about posting this lol.

Your desire for less toxicity and less vitriol in talking to people should also extend to people you don’t like. You can’t espouse wanting a better community while also participating in negativity just against people you don’t like.

Your grace and civility should go to everyone, not just people you like. Nobody here is an enemy, nobody here should be filled with hate and be talked down to. It’s never going to go away, sure, but you can’t say that you want a better place while perpetuating the harm you want to avoid.
