Sʜᴀᴅᴏᴡ Lᴏʀᴅ
I've been thinking about something that came up tangentially in the invasion discussion, but I don't think that thread is really the right place for it.
I've seen a number of writers step away from Chaos recently, or seriously consider doing so. In some cases they've told me why. Those reasons aren't all the same, and I don't think it's useful to reduce them to one issue, one group, staff, factions, invasions, or any particular person.
I'm also not interested in making this a thread about assigning blame.
What I am interested in is whether there are things we, as a community, can actually do better.
Chaos has been around for a very long time. People are obviously going to come and go naturally. Lives change, interests change, muse disappears, people move on. That's normal.
But when someone still wants to write Star Wars RP, still enjoys their characters and their stories, yet decides they would rather do that somewhere other than Chaos, I think it's worth asking why.
More importantly, I think it's worth asking what might have made them stay.
So rather than arguing about whether there is or isn't a problem, I'd like to hear people's experiences and ideas:
I'm interested in practical things we can improve going forward.
Maybe the answer is communication. Maybe it's how we welcome new writers. Maybe it's faction culture, accessibility, events, conflict resolution, transparency, finding RP, or something none of us have considered yet.
I don't expect everyone to agree.
I'd just rather have the conversation while people still care enough about Chaos to have it.
I'm approaching this subject seriously and in good faith. Comments that undermine, trivialize, or make jokes at the expense of the discussion aren't welcome or appreciated here. I'd like to keep the conversation constructive and focused on the issue itself.
I want to be clear about why I'm raising this.
Lately, I've found the OOC side of the community increasingly exhausting to navigate. There are a lot of passive-aggressive remarks, little digs, jokes made at other people's expense, and conversations that seem to carry tension long after the original issue has passed.
For me, it has reached a point where that atmosphere sometimes makes me not want to write here at all.
What concerns me even more is seeing friends and other writers come away from interactions feeling unwelcome, uncomfortable, or as though their presence here isn't wanted. Whether that is anyone's intention or not, I think the effect is worth taking seriously.
I care about Chaos, and I want people to want to be here.
So my question is: what can we do, as writers and as a community, to make this a place where people feel comfortable staying, participating, and writing?

- What things currently make you want to keep writing here?
- What things make you disengage, participate less, or consider leaving?
- Are there reasonable changes that would make the site or community healthier to participate in?
- What are we already doing well that we should make sure we don't lose?
- If you could make one realistic change that might help retain writers, what would it be?
