"Count this one among your confidants. Interests shall align, as they must. There is much this one can provide, as there will be much you provide."

"Oh I expect there is," her hand traced down to his palm, fingers whispering across cool, smooth scales. Something cold and weighty clinked from her palm into his. An aurodium coin emblazoned with the Syndicate's spiked sun on its face. A Black Crown. It could serve many functions. A refuge. And a key. Mauve's lips smirked, "Loyalty has its rewards. I think you'll find a use for this."

Once more her attention turned to the floor below and she rolled her eyes at Vortigern Tagge Vortigern Tagge 's bid.

"A single credit?" She drained the rest of her glass and set it on the balcony rail. "Simpleton."

She gestured and her Nikto upped the ante.

15,000 credits on the carbonite slab.
10,000 credits on the sunfire signet ring.
15,000 credits on the telecrystalline seeds.
10,000 credits on the Krath Omensight mask.
15,000 credits on the Prosperian soulstone.

Kinley had to be careful in how she chose to proceed. If word got back to Flint that she was being disrespectful he would kill her family. In fact their lives were something he held over her constantly. She either fell in line for him or they died, simple as that.

But she needed a way to prove her worth to the Syndicate if she had any chance of getting her family to safety. Right now she was a low level thug who had turned a few heads on a few jobs, but as a bounty hunter she could make a better name for herself. It just required the right words.

She sat back in her seat and studied the visor across from her.

“I’ve been moving product for Flint for a while now and the only other opportunity he’s offered me is a place in his brothel. He has allowed me to step in on jobs Black Sun needs but that’s it. He is adamant that I belong to him alone. I accept my place and mean him no disrespect. I just want to prove my worth to others in this organization.”

She leaned forward, her face intense and hunger in her eyes.

“I can do so much more than peddle spice. Keeping me chained to small time drug deals and brothels is the real betrayal here.”

Her face contorted up into a flash of a wince at the touch, as the rest of her shuddered. Being someone's goon meant a certain amount of safety, especially when your boss was Mercy Mercy of all people, but the downside was the little moments like this. She hated that arm. It was weird, beyond reasoning, and Aylin wasn't so sure on the etiquette of asking about it just yet.

The chrono on her list lit up and she could have sworn her eyes glimmered with the credit symbol. If it was anymore, steam might have come out of her ears too. Naturally, she blew it all at once.

"11,000 credits on the CX-902!"

She cleared her throat, knowing of her blunder and straightened the vest. "Well, no. We're... the exception. Little bit of column a, little bit of column b. But from what I can tell, some of the bounties in this room alone would last you a long, long time."

As expected it wasn't long before Sularen faced opposition for the items he had placed a bid on. First came Vortigern Tagge who chimed in throwing a little insult at Sularen before raising the bid by 1 credit. The Supreme Commander was unfazed by Tagge's insult considering he had heard worse insults throughout his long career, although he did find his bid a bit funny. However Tagge was immediately met with a counter-bid from another individual, Mauve, who raised the bid to 15,000 Credits. It was an interesting development in which Sularen was willing to add too. "Twenty Thousand Credits for the Carbonite Slab."

The next form of opposition Sularen would face would come as a little surprise as another individual, one Aylin Dara would enter the bidding race for the CX902, raising the bid to 11,000 Credits. Another interesting development to be sure although given the importance the CX902 held to the Supreme Commander, having commissioned the vessel for use by his Special Forces back during the days of the Dark Empire, he was determined to acquire it and was ready to entrench himself in a heavy bidding contest for it. "Fifteen Thousand Credits for the CX902 Dagger-Class Infiltrator."

So far things were looking interesting, although regardless of how high the bid went, Sularen would ensure that all the items he had placed bids on would return back to Cholganna with him one way or another.

The Nikto walked up to the aristocrat and handed him a comlink, without comment, only pointing up at the balcony in Mauve’s direction.

“My dear Lord Tagge, what are we going to do about this conundrum. While we bicker this Imperial fellow is going to walk all over us. Tell me what you truly desire from the array - if it’s the Soulstone, then it’s yours. I’m exchange, I propose a joint venture on this mysterious carbonite slab. It must be something worthwhile if the Supreme Commander himself wants a taste.”

Mercy watched the back and forth over her item.

She had said this was just a game, you played and you might win, or you'd lose.... and that's where the problem was. Mercy didn't like to lose as a general rule.

She certainly didn't like to lose against filth like a Moff.

Aylin Dara Aylin Dara responded with her own bid and Mercy patted her on the head again. Once more the general gesture of 'you are doing rather well'. "But you shouldn't blow everything on your first shot, darling Dara." Mercy murmured, the anger in her voice only noticeable to those that actually knew her very well.

Remarkably steady and calm otherwise.

She updated the listing for the ship.

For the CX902 Dagger-Class Infiltrator:
  • 20K UC
  • A set of fire gems straight from the Tionese Royal Treasury, mapped out to resemble Tion Cluster itself.

Even as she updated her listing, she send a message to one of her other acquaintances. She had saved his arse on Coruscant and fought him on Ruusan. Funny how those things went. But Mercy wasn't one to lose. If she lost this auction, she'd just have to get her pound of flesh in a different manner altogether.

The auction's true victor was already decided and it wasn't the House of Tagge or the Imperial Confederation. It was the Black Sun Syndicate in the end for they had orchestrated the event and were poised to collect its considerable proceeds once the event was done and dusted.

These latest bids alone poured enough credits into their coffers to bankroll several minor operations across the galaxy. Such was the advantage of the criminal underworld, to control things without anyone being the wiser and Vortigern had walked right into their trap mostly due to arrogance and pride.

"Another round if you please." He flagged a passing service droid, ordering five more glasses of Alderaanian wine.

Just then, a Nikto appeared from the upper booths of the venue, delivering a private comlink to establish one-way communication between him and Mauve du Vain Mauve du Vain . She was offering the Soulstone in exchange for helping her crowd out the Imperial Officer on the floor.

"You present an enticing proposal, my dear lady. The House of Tagge is prepared to assist you in this matter in return for the Soulstone. I will also drop my bid on the items you wish for, as a sign of goodwill." He spoke with a slight smile as the service droid approached with his order, his hand swirling the full glass as the terminal was updated once more.

Once more the bids for the Carbonite Slab and the CX902 had been increased as Sularen faced continued opposition to his bid for both items. While he could understand where Mercy was coming from given the CX902 was the only item she had placed a bid on, Tagge and Mauve already have multiple items that they had placed bids on and which no one else seemed to pay attention to. Whether it was prejudice or stubbornness, they both appeared determined to outbid Sularen even as the bids became increasingly expensive.

Recognizing that continuing to play this back-and-forth game with the three other contenders could prove to be expensive, the Supreme Commander decided to switch strategies and force them on the defensive. It would throw his contenders off-guard and significantly increase the cost of their bids tonight which in turn would force them to make a decision that would benefit him or try to compromise with the Supreme Commander to get him to back off from their bids.

"I would like to raise the bid on all items with a previous bid made by Tagge and Mauve by five thousand credits and the current bids on the Carbonite Slab and the CX902 by one thousand credit each" the Supreme Commander proclaimed. Now it was his turn to add the pressure on his contenders.

A coin in his hand, and she withdrew. Another bargaining chip -- this one, perhaps, even more valuable than the Soulstone. Yet, her words: loyalty. That had given him only pain and death for many years.

He didn't spend long wondering whether this would be different. The rewards here were not for loyalty but violence; perhaps it was the same, then. "This one would do it for free. The slaying, at least. This one does not know Sal-Soren well -- a poor sign, for her chances in combat."

He flexed his cybernetic hand. Did he believe it? He'd crossed sabers with a grandmaster once, briefly; this order was far younger. He'd said it at the gathering of Vigos -- he had strength, and they understood, but warrior to warrior was a different matter. Still, his confidence remained undimmed.

"Spectacular and rewarding as a clash may be, Sarko remains the better target," he advised. "But as this one said -- your trap is well-laid. Best to confirm the kill.

"Though, to your pleasure, this one will act, should a better opportunity present itself."

"Try not to blow a fuse, Jerec." He said in passing, seeing the plainly writ irritation flushed across the Ithorian. He glanced towards the announcer, then back. "If you want that thing so badly, I'll get it for you. It'll cost you, but not that much."

It took Jerec a beat to answer, focused as he was on the auction and certainly not distracted in any way by a distinctly slinky Neimoidian.

"I'm winning," he said. "I put a lot've value on your work, Fett, but calling you in to steal something that's going to be mine anyway is...admittedly hilarious. I'd do it if the Underlord wasn't in spitting distance." He shifted his head in the general direction of Tharn, who presided over this room as over all rooms.

"I'm the new Vigo on the block, gotta be..." He was still looking at the Neimoidian, who he was fairly sure was an assassin of the 'make it look good' variety. Was he on the job? Was he not? Through his space suit's straw aperture, Jerec slurped whisky thoughtfully. "...circumspect."

His armoured frame shrugged.

"You know who to call if things start to go in another direction," though a beeping alert rang on his wrist, then.

His visored gaze eyed Mercy from across the room, fixed on her even as he spoke to Jerec again.

"But, it looks like I might have another job soon." He showed it to the Ithorian, "You're a gambling man, Jerec. Take your bets on who's head this might be."

Someone in this very room, no doubt. He glanced here, there, taking the attendees in.

"Right." She said, admitted some amount of defeat. "That said, we had to beat the Imp out."

It was no wonder as to how Aylin managed to remain as broke as she was, even with a generous handout being provided mere moments ago. Someone smarter would have bet low, stayed low, and made out with whatever scraps were left over. Suppose she was a touch too impulsive.

She spied Mercy's datapad, however, and saw some screens unrelated to the auction. Her brow lofted with a sideye, ever-curious.

A message was sent to Aylin Dara Aylin Dara . It originated from the DarkNet. The type of undercurrent below the notice of the public holo-net reserved for true denizens of the underworld. Denizens that included Black Sun elites.

A very generous sum of funds came attached with the message, alongside a suggestion on how to make use of them.

Consider this small token an investment in your future. Show your boss you can be useful to her.

The atmosphere inside the auction house seemed to thickened, as Supreme Commander Marlon Sularen Marlon Sularen made his move. Such a heavy-handed, utterly flawed tactic, Vortigern thought, swirling the Alderaanian wine in his glass as the terminal updated.

Sularen for all his floundering failed to grasp the core truth of this little operation of theirs in the fact that both he and Mauve du Vain Mauve du Vain were private individuals, untethered by military budgets or Imperial oversight of finances.

They had the credits to spare and no one to answer to in pursuit of their desired items here at this event. A thought entered into his mind, picturing the collective outrage from Imperial Central Command when news reached them of Sularen's extravagant spending on non-military tech especially with the Sith Order breathing down the Confederation's neck.

"Lovely timing." He said aloud as his bid on the carbonite individual was combined with the Zeltron pushing the pot to a staggering 55,000 credits and he would push it to 58,000 with a single click of a button as well as withdrawing from the Gatecrasher that Koda Fett Koda Fett wanted for there was no reason to cause trouble for a professional bounty hunter.

"But, it looks like I might have another job soon." He showed it to the Ithorian, "You're a gambling man, Jerec. Take your bets on who's head this might be."

Jerec glanced at Koda's comm and raised an eyestalk. He conferred with his entourage of space-suited Ithorians about the recent bidding on the lots he hadn't been watching. It seemed clear—

"She's up against two Empires. Not Imperials, Empires. Look at those guys. They're..."

Jerec paused.

"... institutions."

It wasn't. It couldn't be.

Yep, that was Marlon Sularen Marlon Sularen , fellow auction aficionado, and once of the Directorate. A group that had blown up Jerec's favorite ship, put a six-figure bounty on his head back when he was a simple prospector, and paid out that bounty to shove him in an extremely dubious private prison. Easily one of the five worst prisons of Jerec's life.

"Tell you what, Fett. If it turns out her target is that guy over there, Sularen, I'll match whatever she gives you. Do the bounty as normal, no obligations toward me, you just get paid twice. Think you can deal with getting paid twice?"

Now this was an interesting situation. It appeared that both Mauve and Tagge had combined their bids for the carbonite slab in an attempt to outmaneuver Sularen. At this point the Supreme Commander knew what game his competitors were playing, slowly trying to bleed him out, raising the price to a point in which he couldn't afford it anymore, or at least to a point in which they thought he couldn't afford it anymore. It was a shame they underestimated the true scope of Sularen's personal wealth, but alas it as not unexpected.

To them, he was a mere Imp, one of many generic Imperials who thought he could barge in and take what he wanted. Someone who did not truly belong in the chaotic and unforgiving atmosphere of the Underworld. Except they were dealing with an Imperial who could barge in and take what he wanted and who had the experience to navigate the Underworld and deal with it's worst aspects unscathed. They could plot and scheme all they wanted but it would not change the outcome.

Thus the Supreme Commander would proceed to increase his bids ready to push his competitors towards their limits. All he needed to do before beginning his final coup-de-grace would be to see how they responded to his escalation.

Mauve pulled out a datapad and examined the file one of her sources had just pinged her. An asset writeup on the Supreme Commander. Not nearly as liquid as one might think, but she supposed that was to be expected. Most of his wealth was likely bound up in starships and real estate.

He could try to keep up with them.

He would fail.

The info maven examined her fingernails.

Mercy sighed.

Yeah, she was going to put a bounty up for this win or not, because he had truly annoyed her. Until this Moff came along it hadn't even been a bidding war for the ship that she wanted.

Disappointing.

She updated her listing for the CX902 ship again:
  • 25K UC
  • Tion Cluster Fire Gems
  • One Sith Artifact
Mercy wondered if she could get away with walking up to them and beating them to death with their own limbs.

Presumably the Underlord would frown on such things.

It might still be worth it though.
