What Do You Want To See In A Sith?

Aellin Tedronai

Guest
So, I've been pondering this since I've now created Aellin as my new Sith character.

Everyone has a different image of what a "Sith" actually is, everyone things it's one thing or the other and everyone has a vision as to what a Sith should eventually become. I'm not talking about motivation or even drive, but rather...more of an end goal.

I for instance believe that the perfect Sith isn't necessarily about being evil, not about slaughtering innocents or doing anything of the sort. To me a Sith is a character that embraces the true passion of their existence, they wipe away all the old parts of them and become reborn, latching onto a singular point as their goal which they are driven to by the passion, whether that passion be anger, fear, or even love.

A great example of this, at least how I see it is the Sith Lord Darth Malgus. Malgus as a character wanted nothing more than to see the glory and reach of the Empire expand, he drove all of his passion, all of his strength, everything he had into following this one simple goal, even going so far as to(spoilers) kill the woman he loved to achieve it.

That to me is a Sith. Someone who is driven by their passion, reborn by it, to follow a singular driven goal.

So I post this because I want to know Chaos' opinion, What ya'll think.

Discuss:
  • What is a Sith to you?
  • What would you like to see Sith on SWRP do more?
  • Who is your favorite Sith In Star Wars?
  • Who is/was your favorite Sith on Chaos?

There are many different types of Sith as there are Jedi, I think.

What Sith is to Hion:
Ends-justifies-means rather than mindless monsters, although some of them certainly can be. Just because you are Sith does not mean your only goal is power. Almost every great Sith wanted to gain power, but they had a greater goal of uniting the galaxy.

Orcus ascribes to Lumiya's Sith, which is a recognition that the Dark Side will corrupt the body, but also that it is more immediately powerful than the Light. It's about sacrifice of one's self, friends and family in order to achieve a greater good.

Interesting topic!

Darth Malgus is also my favorite Sith. He has many more dimensions than some of his ilk.

Darth Azurea fell to the darkside to embrace her emotions such as passion and anger as well as disgust for the Jedi Order on who she blamed her sister's death (her sister is actually alive). So her reasons for being a Sith are extremely specific and less general.

And I agree - it's hard to characterize the Sith, but on Chaos, [member="Darth Vornskr"] embodies the proper villainous nature of the Sith.

What is a Sith to me?
Much like you said, a Sith aspires to and is driven by passion. However, so are Dark Jedi. I think what sets the Sith apart from other users of the Dark Side is their creed. They aren't just set on personal goals, but group-goals. Each individual Sith has their goal, but they also have a sort of goal as a group. For Darth Bane, the ultimate goal was power and even more power. For Darth Krayt, the will of the Dark Lord (himself) was the goal, giving purpose to the faction and a direction to the power.
A Sith is a darksider dedicated to an age-old tradition where they work as a group (2 - infinite) in order to enact a grand plan. By working with this group, the individual darksider has a greater chance of achieving their own passion. Perhaps somewhere along the way, the individual Sith will fall in odds against the grand plan, one can conform or rebel.
As a group, the goals have generally been to wipe out all resistance and ascend to rule the galaxy.

What would I like to see Sith on SWRP do more?
I think Sith on SWRP should work more with their motivations. Why do they serve the Dark Lord? What are their goals? Where do these goals coincide and were do they clash with the general theme of the faction? My character has been asked why before, and it was a difficult question to answer. It's something one should revisit and reassess as the character develops.
Also, don't be afraid of being villainous; we need good villains on the board. However, don't be afraid of being conflicted or more nuanced either, it's all a part of making a believable character.

What is my favourite Sith in Star Wars?
I have a penchant for Asajj Ventress, but she never truly made it into Sith-hood. So, I will say my favourite is Darth Bane. I am quite curious about other Sith Lords too, but he is the one I know the best, so it's a safe bet.

Who is my favourite Sith on Chaos?
This is a very difficult choice. I want to be my own favourite Sith. That would be the goal for anything I write.
[member="Darth Isolda"] [member="Vrag"] and [member="Darth Hauntruss"] have always been idols that I've looked to in my own Sith.
There are many more I ought to mention as they have been great inspirations.

A Sith to me is someone like Bane. He's not just a brute, but a manipulator and a scholar. He has no compunction again killing but does not simply kill for sport. Plagueis too in that he's like a Mafia don. He will kill you if it's best for business but not otherwise. He's a different sort, studying the Force itself, than the more practical Bane.

They all have a vision, something to drive them. Unlike the Jedi, morality does not factor in. Driven and ruthless but cunning.

In my opinion though Darth Revan (Yes I know) Is what it means to be sith in my mind. Highly intelligent, driven in his purpose, powerful beyond belief, capable tactician, charismatic and one of the greatest Lightsaber master of his age. Now what this means in my mind is the simple fact that he sees people as a resource and the blatant bombing of a planet to dust is a crying shame and to be quite honest even though in a way it doesn't impact the galaxy by much is still so wasteful.
I've read of at least two instances were the one sith just flat out exterminated an entire race simply because it was the easy thing to do. To me a sith is someone who takes the difficult path to find his own weaknesses, to learn and grow both as an individual and in power. Some sith I've seen lately just seem to forgo the whole aspect of intelligence and just go straight to being these battle hungry brutes or go to being very powerful individuals that judge everyone around them inferior to themselves even though the person right in front of them has not only power enough to kill/destroy them but also has more practical skill sets than the other.

A sith should always strive for perfection, in being and power. That is what it means to be sith, an intelligent, driven individual that not only doesn't conform to morality but uses others morality against them. They are ruthless only when it's practical for example if the one sith would attack a planet that has a single large city and to sow fear over the galaxy they decide to glass the whole thing then I'd say they are being lead by an idiot that could just as well gas the city to kill everything inside but the gas would dissipate in a day or so, leaving the city intact for conquest but also the rest of the planet being safe. Of course the death of such a city would be the last possible option considered as well.

The duality of a sith is in essence that of the behind the scenes mastermind or the rage filled brute but that isn't the only way a sith can be. Heck the rule of two sith even learned lightside abilities just to deepen their knowledge and power in the force and became such masters of the arts of lightsaber dueling that their use of one was simply to insult the jedi as backing that lightsaber was such immeasurable power that the lightsaber paled in comparison.

As far as sith on this site that have inspired me and helped be grow my character beyond the concept I first had of him it would undoubtedly be [member="Mythos"] as he as become the goal to overcome for Erebos as well as his friend and rival. With this contradictory relationship between them Erebos has discovered his lack of combat skills as he had delved into the mysteries of the force but thanks to Mythos he has begun to grow and branch out into the skills and knowledge that the world has to offer.

What is a Sith to you?

A Sith, to me, is someone that seeks total freedom from the norms and mores of galactic society, whatever the cost. In the strictest terms, Nietzsche's superman made reality (insofar as you can in a fictional setting) in the galaxy. Or so they'd have you believe. It's more than just casting lightning and punting doggies; a Sith has drive, a Sith has purpose, and they're willing to dive into the arcane and the forbidden to do so. Of course, the Dark Side is a fickle master, and it takes a toll on the user's psyche, but even by the time your average everyday Sith has gone guano, there's still the fire and the determination that set them on their course to begin with.

What would you like to see Sith on SWRP do more?

I haven't seen a whole lot of Sith here. Seen Sith on my previous site, but as that doesn't necessarily translate here I'll withhold commentary on that. But in general, I'd like to see more grand scheming. More complex plots. Not just "take over because lol" or "hurr durr evulz". I'm talking full-on Machiavelli stuff here. And more...amorality, I suppose. The Sith never thought of themselves as evil, not a single one of them, despite their goals and the horrific methods often used to achieve them. I'd like to see that explored a bit more.

I like sith who are not to dimensional, who basically say we are sith we kill for fun.
To me they are not sith, they are dark Jedi.
To me a sith should be patient, deadly when needed to be, and without mercy when doing it.
Though they should not do it too often, as they should be wary that sith code teaches.
If you make people hate and fear you, you actually strengthen them.
That has been proven in history of the sith, and sith should be able to learn form that.

So yes kill when needed, like a mafia boss as [member="Dune Rhur"] said.
So yes power is own reward, but they should have a vision of some thing to do with it.
Also a sith should like mafia bosses be wary, of the friends more than the enemy.
As it is there friends that will kill them for that power.

The Second Seal, broken.
Curious question! As a lover of villainous characters (let's face it, I can't write goody-two-shoes for chit) bad guys are definitely my favorites in any genre.

First off, thanks for the mention, [member="Darth Ophidia"]! Almost brings tears to my eyes. :p

Going to use it as a spring board, however, to say that Vrag has never constituted a "proper" Sith (at least compared to what I see as a proper Sith, anyway). She was never planned to be a proper Sith, and it was/is a running gag in the narrative of many threads I've done with her. She was always meant to be just a really, *really* bad person.

Which is where a Sith and a Regular Villain™ differ, imo. As others have said, Sith have some sort of grand plan beyond a basic quest for power. They don't desire power for power's sake, but usually want to use that power in order to do something else. While world domination (or galaxy, as it were) is often that second thing/end goal, I don't think it's ever meant as a Sauronian world domination scenario, where everything that breathes wrong is slaughtered and the land is exploited until it dies.

Probably closer to a totalitarian regime, or an enlightened absolutist monarch sort of thing, or at least that's how I've always imagined it. Sith are people with a burning vision, a vision so great that the means used to achieve it are justified tenfold upon its success. Deluded fanatics in denial? Maybe. :p

Favorite SW Sith?
Ehh... pass, probably, because I'm not that great with EU. There's a couple I like, but no real favorites.

Favorite Chaos Sith?
I'm constantly told I joined in the era where proper Sith had already disappeared from the site, so there's that. I will say, however, that as far as villainous villains go, [member="Darth Vornskr"] probably takes most of the cake. I've also always liked [member="Darth Isolda"] for her single-minded devotion. There's others that come to mind, like [member="Darth Hauntruss"], for example.

I have other favorite villains still, but they make for poor Sith. :p

<3 *ravages*

I feel loved! xD

Truth be told it feels nice to hear this from you and [member="Darth Ophidia"], mainly because it took me forever to get a Dark Force User to stick.

It is nice that my twist in it made some waves.
