- Quick Drop Hatch for SOF teams on the bottom of the ship for rapid deployment.
- Self-Destruct System: The Captain or XO can detonate a special EMP shielded small tactical nuclear warhead located on the bridge to completely obliterate the ship in the event of a threat of capture-this warhead ensures that the submarine will be completely annihilated to avoid critical intelligence from falling into enemy hands relatively intact. It must be manually triggered.
- Capable stealth space submarine able to handle a wide variety of threats from all types of capital ships to ground targets.
- With its high speed and maneuverability it is capable of misdirecting or evading most attempts to corner it with wise use and slip into places unnoticed.
- Unrivaled HPI stealth technology.
- Capable of having a small number of SOF teams or operatives aboard, can insert them stealthily and support them with missiles.
- Does not have shields as they are useless for its role and if it is caught in the open it is dead anyway.
- Thin armor designed to only deal with glancing or light blows from ordnance/lasers.
- Expensive and limited in deployment to small wolfpacks.
- Does not have any effective anti-starfighter armament, relies on stealth to survive.
The culmination of the “S” series of special projects recently undertaken by Voland Military Enterprises, the Voland Class Space Submarine is a secret stealth space submarine created for her XIII Battlegroup and her closest and most trusted allies, and quite literally paid for with the blood of her own soldiers as its creation was only possible by signing what some members of the Elysium Empire would describe as a pact with the devil with HPI and the Eternal Empire. This was due to an urgent need after the Battle of Tython for a fast, stealthy multipurpose ship that could take on a wide variety of tactical roles and fit into the flexible and combined arms tactics of the XIII Battlegroup, something which the VCSS does perfectly.
With its proprietary new Voron and Orel stealth torpedoes, the Voland Class can make life a nightmare for enemy capital ship commanders of both large and small capital ships alike-spread out too much to lessen the impact of turbolaser and heavy artillery fire from her various allies or maneuver quickly? Risk getting doubleteamed by both submarines and strikecraft. Fearfully bunch in close together to better deal with both of those? Risk getting outflanked, outmaneuvered, and torn apart by the heavy guns of other capital ships. Try to rush her seemingly undefended carriers with snarky hyperspace jumps to the edge of the standoff gravity well generators of the carriers with light cruisers and frigates? You never know if a few Voland Classes are lurking in wait for such a maneuver and to eat them for lunch. One way or another, an enemy commander is going to have to pay some kind of price.
The Voland Class is also capable of providing support for ground invasions and special operations missions via its groundstrike missiles and a limited but decent amount of room for small teams of SOF soldiers. A critical enemy base might soon find itself dealing with sudden barrages of heavy missiles and ambushes by special forces. Large enemy columns and grouped up soldiers may even frightfully hear the radiological alarms suddenly blare as the Voland’s tactical nuclear missiles are armed and launched, scrambling for dear life to avoid the center of the blast zone in time.
Of course, there are drawbacks and tradeoffs to the ship. While agile, fast, and boasting excellent stealth technology, it cannot take many hits if its location is pinpointed from either starfighters or capital ships due to unwise use of its weapons or certain other countermeasures best left up to the reader's imagination. It is also extremely expensive to produce and thus capable of only being fielded in small numbers, usually with the presence of the XIII Battlegroup proper, with estimates of there being only around ten or so of them available at any given time for deployment. A wise captain will be aware of the strengths and weaknesses of her stealth capabilities, and of her three weapons systems and how they work, to avoid detection.
Still, overall the Voland Class is an excellent stealth ship and something for her opponents to rightfully be paranoid of-even if she deigns not to take any of them into battle with her. You never know when and where their devastating torpedoes may come from next-or even if they are going to come at all.
