STRENGTHS
Thunderstruck: Vanguard fires condensed bolts of electricity, allowing it to bypass certain types of energy shields and conventional defenses. These bolts can also not be deflected by lightsabers, though they may still be blocked.
Eye of the Storm: Force sensitive individuals will find they are capable of attuning to the blaster due to the presence of a firkrann crystal, increasing their overall ability with the weapon accordingly.
WEAKNESSESShocking Range: Vanguard has a smaller range than most blasters, with the damage of each bolt decreasing the further it has to travel. Whilst utilizing the needlebeam functionality, this range becomes even shorter.
DESCRIPTION
It is not often TOTT finds itself commissioned by a Jedi, but when a hulking brute specimen of a Trandoshan asks you to do something for them, you generally tend to do it without too many questions in return. After clearing up an unfortunate misunderstanding, and taking a few minutes to pick his fragile dignity (and wallet) off of the shop floor, the initial designs of the Vanguard Shock Blaster soon ensued.
Intended to be used in melee combat and in situations where the opposition frequently had access to lightsabers, durability was a primary focus during the opening stages of development. While initial prototypes featured cortosis-weave over a durasteel shell, testing quickly highlighted the flaw in the material when it was subjected to prolonged energy attacks, with barrel warping occurring after the first few hundred shots. Though lacking the same high level of resistance as cortosis, Duranium proved to be a much better alternative, providing extreme durability and lightening the blaster’s overall weight considerably. The latter proved ideal with the original commission’s specification for the blaster to be used as an off-hand weapon.
The next hurdle was to solve the relative fragility of the piezoelectric crystals found in similar weapons, with several options being floated and dismissed before finally settling on the hardy and powerful firkrann crystal. While this increased the price of each unit considerably, it has allowed sensitive users (such as the intended clients) to attune to the weapon much in a similar way they would a lightsaber. Apparently that’s neat or something.
The end result is a rather lightweight, durable and rugged weapon that fires condensed bolts of electrical energy as opposed to conventional blaster bolts with surprising accuracy and can survive a glancing blow from a lightsaber without noticeable loss in functionality. Repeated strikes not so much, but nothing is perfect.
The ambidextrous grip, on the other hand, might come close. Featuring a cautionary pulse to alert the user when the ammunition is low, like the trigger guard, the grip has been designed to be adjustable, replaceable and even removable to suit the requirements of most humanoid hands. An autosteady has also been installed to further help less dexterous species.
