SPECIAL FEATURES
STRENGTHS
  • Heavily armoured aircraft and command centre. It can store a sizeable number of atmospheric aircraft, airspeeders and troop transports, deploy them into battle as well as provide repair services. Essentially, it is an air base on the move. Can also carry a contingent of marines etc.
  • Moreover, it features advanced command and control systems. This allows it to act as a command and logistics centre for any surface fleet as well as for amphibious operations in general.
  • Quite fast, especially for something this big. Speed is important because it needs to deployed anywhere on the world it's been stationed on quickly, and be able to escape if needed and avoid submarines.
WEAKNESSES
  • An aircraft carrier is...super huge. And super heavy. It is hard to miss on the open sea or in a harbour.
  • Lightly armed. It is very heavily armoured, but its armaments are defensive. It relies on the attack craft it can deploy into battle, not on big guns to get into slug fests with big surface warships. This means it will need escorts in battle.
  • Speed is a cut above average but something this big simply is not that manoeuvrable or great at turning. It is a surface ship the size of a frigate class starship, after all.
DESCRIPTION

Over the years, Firemane has found itself operating on fringe worlds where the the oceans play a huge role in transport and trade. Surface ships are needed for battle, reconnaissance as well as to provide staging areas for aircraft and ground operations. Moreover, big surface ships can be used for power and force projection. Thus Firemane decided to invest in '100, 000 tons of diplomacy'. Using Eldorai aesthetics and upgrading the designs of other galactic vessels, it built an aircraft carrier. Certain military thinkers in Firemane have dismissed it as an obsolete vanity project that appeals to Siobhan Kerrigan's sense of grandiosity more than practical military concerns. The spacefleet lobbied for a flying aircraft carrier, operating under the assumption that it would obviously control it.

This was enough for Firemane's waterfleet to enthusiastically promote an aircraft carrier that actually spends all its time on water. Siobhan may also have simply liked the adjutant the waterfleet sent her more than the starfleet one. When Siobhan fell into a coma following her duel with Darth Soteria, the project's future was once again put into question, However, her 'regent' Kaylah Danton was reluctant to terminate a project the boss had endorsed. The new waterborne vessel was named the Tsunami Class.

It can serve as a staging area for air strikes, aerial and amphibious assault forces, anti-surface warfare, aerial defence and disaster relief. At the same time, the Tsunami can be used for diplomacy, power projection and crisis response. An aircraft carrier has been likened to a city at sea. It certainly has the population of a small town. However, conditions are a lot more cramped and the residents are quite isolated. The sleeping quarters - referred to as berthing compartments - are not large. Enlisted personnel will have to share compartments with a large number of fellow sailors. Each sailor gets a rack, a stowage bin and upright lockers for their possessions. A bathroom and a common area is assigned to each compartment. Needless to say officers have more space and better furnishings because classism, but even their space is not large.

The Tsunami features several kitchens and mess halls, coffee shop, as well as infirmaries, dentist and doctor's offices, a commissary, a library, and a laundry facility. Firemane supports freedom of religion, so each carrier has a shrine that can serve as a place of religious worship. Because sailors and pilots can expect to be on deployment for many months on end, each vessel comes equipped with a gym.

The heart of the ship are the flight deck, hangar and the command deck. There is always work to do on the vessel. A sizeable number of people fly or maintain the aircraft. Meanwhile, the ship's company keeps the carrier running smoothly. This can involve anything from preparing meals to maintaining and using weapons or working as an engineer. Atmospheric aircraft take off from and land on the flight deck, making it a miniaturised air field at sea. It can also handle docking procedures troop transports, shuttles and the like.

The Tsunami's command deck serves as the bridge of the vessel, handling oversight of combat operations, air traffic control, logistics and many other crucial tasks. It features an information warfare centre and a Battle Analysis Computer. With a fully functional Operations Room, the officers stationed here can communicate with pilots and commanders in the field. Information received from sources such as surface and underwater ships, aircraft, drones, satellites etc. can be received, analysed and collated. This allows for greater precision during the conduct of military operations, improving command and control. The process is assisted by a Battle Analysis Computer. There is also a communications room filled with Enlightenment Quantum Communicators to ensure communications security. Access to the command deck as well as to engineering units is heavily guarded.

For propulsion the Tsunami has a powerful reactor, ion drives and aquatic propulsion systems. The Tsunami is not heavily armed, but due to its air wing it can attack enemy targets before they get near. Moreover, its imposing defences and huge size make it very difficult to sink. The Tsunami has a comprehensive electronic warfare suite to deceive sensors, jam enemy targeting computers, divert torpedoes and missiles etc.

The carrier has strong, military grade shields similar to the ones a starship would have. The only issue being that they cannot have them easily raised for takeoff and landing. However, certain zones of the shield can be raised and lowered as needed. This is necessary to launch and retrieve attack craft whilst the shield is up. This may become a problem in heavy seas but they are unlikely to fight in a howling tempest because their fighters would not be able to launch properly. Carriers never operate alone, so the Tsunami would have destroyers and smaller subs in the task force.

Due to the size of the Tsunami, it comes equipped with a sophisticated 3D Printer that can take virtually any physical object, such as liquids and old refuse, break it down to its basic molecules and then rearrange into another physical object, such as water, weapons, foodstuffs or components. It cannot replicate complex systems, but it is good at keeping the crew supplied with stuff they need. Aside from its crew, the carrier can accommodate a couple of hundred marines or passengers for it to launch shuttles from the ship to land on shore.

Typically, crew members for a Tsunami are recruited from a variety of species. Aquatic species such as Mon Calamari are obvious candidates, but one can also find, for instance, humans and Eldorai. There is also a growing Qadiri contingent. The elves are new to the advanced technology many people take for granted and there is a learning process involved when it comes to using high-tech, but they have a strong maritime tradition. Moreover, all Qadiri have inherent navigational talent that can be likened to an internal compass. Some can even use the Force to instinctively find their way in the most treacherous of conditions. These individuals are obviously targeted for recruitment.
