ACS-405 Enhanced Vehicle Sensor Suite
Intent: To modernize Vehicles and Tanks for Combat
Development Thread: As Needed
Manufacturer: ArmaTech Combat Systems and MandalHypernautics
Model: Mk1
Affiliation: Open Market
Modularity: It is a Modification and can be altered to fit almost any vehicle
Production: Mass
Material: Electronics, Sensor Equipment, Comm-Link components

Classification: Sensor Suite
Special Features:

  • Laser Target Designator: Marks targets using an infrared laser for air and orbital strikes
  • Laser Sensor System: Can Detect Range, Cross-Wind, and Barometric Pressure from the sensor to the target pin pointed by the laser
  • Long Range Sensor Suite
Weaknesses:
  • Laser Target Designator must be able actually contact the hull of the target in order to properly paint a target
  • Laser Sensor System must strike target in order to give the proper data
Description:
The ACS-405 is designed to increase the effectiveness, range, and sensitivity of the vehicles sensor suite and communication array. It is able quickly scan the area around the vehicle using a combination of X-Ray, Sonar, Radar, Thermal, Ultraviolet, and Electromagnetic Spectrums. It has a longer range than standard sensor packages and the power and sensitivity to cut through low grade jamming signals and signal distortion systems. Sufficiently powerful jamming signals as well as significant natural interference will render it ineffective. Effectively it is a long range sensor array capable of scanning a wide variety of spectrums.

The communication system is two pronged. First and exterior hard-wired comm-link on the rear of the vehicle allows troops to communicate with the vehicle and still maintain comm-silence, as well as cut through all jamming systems as it is hard-wired to the vehicles intercom system. This is simply a wired phone connected to the vehicle's interior intercom. Secondly it benefits from increased range through use of short burst S-threads. This vastly increases the range and allows the vehicle to communicate with ships in orbit, but requires a satellite system if the recipient is sufficiently obscured by rock and land mass. A conventional comm system is still included.

A Laser Target Designator is featured on the vehicle, allowing it to mark targets using the infrared laser. These are used for designating targets for orbital bombardment, cruise missile strikes, and other guided ordnance. The laser is invisible to the visual spectrum, and does not shine continuously, instead pulsing to make it more difficult to detect. The signals bounce off the target and are received by the seeker on the laser guided munition, steering the projectile towards the center of the reflected signal. They require clear Line of Sight to target in order to function properly.

A Laser Sensor system is attached to the main weapon on the turret. A small node above the primary weapon on the chassis for the weapon, the laser uses a series of pulses to sense the cross-winds and their speed and direction to target, the barometric pressure of the air, the range, and other atmospheric conditions that would otherwise affect a projectile’s travel to the target. It is effectively a set of Barometric Pressure Sensors, Rangefinder, Electrobinoculars, and Cross-wind Sensor routed and processed through the same targeting computer.

  • Can any guided missile be used with this system? Or is this proprietary, requiring specialized rounds to be made?
Draco Vereen said:
It does this by detecting the distortion in the planet’s electromagnetic field caused by weather systems and translates them through a computer, assisting in plotting firing solutions for the gunner.
  • I am unable to find any canon precedent for this. Without anything in the Star Wars or SWRP universe to substantiate this I will need to ask for a dev thread of about 10 posts to integrate within this sensor package.

  1. First one is simply explaining how Laser Painting a target is done. I would presume since there are no current missile that work like this (This one) it would need to be submitted separately, but that is how RL Laser Painting a target is done http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laser_designator and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laser_guidance
  2. That is just a sensor system to detect cross-winds, barometric pressure, humidity, and range; something that exists in abundance in RL. I will try to find the science article I pulled that from.
In conclusion, I can and will do a Dev Thread if Necessary but here are some links that describe what I am after better than I did. I also pulled the how it works from the description (I had found it somewhere on the internet but the article escapes me now), it is now just a conglomerate of different types of sensors.

  • Tech that exists in the real world will still on occasion need to either have a canon precedence to exist, or a submission made for it in order to balance the real world aspect with the RP setting and Star Wars environment. Implementing a number of real world technologies into a single submission without canon precedence will generally require a development thread to accommodate its' collective existence, and/or your company's ability to manufacture it.
  • The line that I quoted should perhaps be edited, as the implication I see by this is that if this device were to be fitted to a starship, it would have the capability of zeroing in on any location of a planet (However I see you have already edited this, and thus my concern is addressed.)
Approved. Pending Secondary.

With the real world precedents set I find this submission to be okay, however i ask you to be careful in its use and remind you of other limitations.

Approved.
