First Reply Touched By Fire

Midvinter was a world of ice and cold. Unforgiving winter, yet beautiful in it's crisp snow. Serene and peaceful. Today wasn't peaceful. Aris burst from the wall as flame chased after. A town building, ablaze in an inferno of heat. In his arms a pair of Valkyri, coughing from the smoke but unharmed otherwise. He gave a brief smile as he set them down before looking back toward the flame. No known source, no information on who else was within.

"Go, marshal who you can to help put this out. I'll see if anyone else is within." Aris stepped forward then, back into the burning building. Fire danced across his skin, but he didn't burn. As useful as that was, his brow furrowed. He didn't have any way to find people still within short of sprinting through and searching everywhere. Inefficient, but he didn't hesitate any longer to do so.

He'd save everyone he could.

Not alone, you’re not! Connel was on Midvinter visiting his mother and in town to go to the bakery to pick up her food order. He didn’t get there yet because of the fire. The bucket brigade was on their way, but that didn’t help the populace right now. Using the Force to Alter the Environment, he was pulling moisture from everywhere he could. Connel wanted to create a rain shower, not a big one but localized enough to at least help, one that would not rain all over the cold roads and bring ice. He focused on directing the rain to the area of the fire, ensuring it was concentrated enough to douse the flames without causing widespread disruption. The effort strained him as he wasn’t the master of this skill like his father was, but the immediate need to protect lives and property pushed him to maintain control over the environmental manipulation.

I’ll buy you as much time as I can.

Connel? Aris let himself smile just a bit in relief, but he didn't slow. Fire couldn't hurt him, but the water Connel brought would help keep those the fire could safer. Not that he could find them easily. It was a mad sprint from room to room. Thankfully it wasn't a large building, a workplace for ten most likely. Could there be more? Possibly. So much uncertainty made it difficult, but he continued his mad sprint, bringing out one person at a time.

The bucket brigade had made it and began to set up. The fire was unfortunately raging and while they were fighting it, there was concern about the building collapsing. The firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the blaze, their efforts hampered by the intense heat and smoke. Despite the danger, they coordinated to evacuate nearby residents and protect surrounding structures. The building's structural integrity remained a critical concern as they battled to prevent further escalation of the disaster.

Connel was strained, but there was something else he could do. It would take a lot more out of him, but this was more important.

If I do my best to bring the blaze out, could you better contain it?

“What are you asking, Master Jedi?”

I can try to pull the oxygen out of the building, will it come out towards us?

“Yes!” The Captain yelled. “Brothers! Set yourselves!”

~Structure is weakening… control your breathing I’m pulling oxygen!~ Saying this through the Force, Connel knew that Aris would be okay, but if there were more people in there, they may be in danger from this, not that they are not already.

Thankfully those inside knew how many were left. Aris was told ten, so his assumption was correct at least. One left. He dove back in, searching everywhere he could until he found the man tucked in a corner to try and escape the heat. Aris gave a brief, calming sort of smile before he heard the voice in his head. He blinked before gritting his teeth.

Heat ripped out as the oxygen followed suit. He moved to try and cover the man from the rush of flame and heat s best he could as he rushed outside. Fire smoldered over his clothing, but Aris was as ever unharmed by the heat. The same couldn't be said for the man he carried. He frowned deeply as he brought him to a medic. They needed to be treated, but it wasn't something Aris could help with.

For the most part, Connel’s idea had worked. The escaping oxygen brought the fire trying to chase it just like he wanted. Right into the firefighters’ line of sight. The fire was contained within their view, allowing the firefighters to act swiftly and effectively. Connel’s quick thinking had turned a potential disaster into a manageable situation, showcasing the importance of strategy in high-pressure scenarios. The team’s coordination ensured the flames were subdued without further escalation.

Then as he collapsed onto a bench breathing heavily and grasping his head, Connel saw Aris, and the victim he was carrying out and the Jedi’s heart sank. Yes, it could have been a lot worse, no one got left behind, and the man would probably make a full recovery from the looks of him, but if he had these injuries because of Connel?

Unacceptable… He could not dwell on this though, Connel needed to focus on his own recovery, and as a medic brought oxygen to him, he shook his head and pointed away. Take care of the others, they’re more important.

A little confused, the medic slowly walked away but was still eyeing him. When he saw Aris, he asked simply…

You okay? He did not know about Noble’s physiology, to Connel he was just “taller than an old tree.”

Aris took a moment, breathed in before glancing to Connel. "I was in no danger. Why did you pull the fire out like that?" He paused. There was a tension in his form as he looked down towards the other man, simply waiting for an answer. Logic had to win out, at least for the moment. Logic as to why they put someone in that kind of danger. Something Aris didn't know about.

Yep. he was mad, and had a right to be. Connel was mad at himself for what had happened. He reacted, not thinking about what he was doing. Unfortunately things went the way that they did but it was a split second decision. If they were in no danger, what took them so long to get out? Why were the firefighters concerned about entering the blaze? These questions suggest there was hesitation or delay in their actions, raising concerns about the firefighters' response time or the situation's urgency. Perhaps they were assessing risks, ensuring safety, or facing obstacles that slowed their entry. Such details could clarify whether Connel's reaction was justified or avoidable.

Firefighters were chattering about the building about to come down. I wanted to squelch the fire as fast as possible, or at least try.

He then looked up, genuinely regretful. I stand by my actions, but I wish there was a better way. You said you weren’t in any danger? How? Did you find a vault or something? The question sounded ridiculous in his mind, but the statement stuck out to him.

"Nothing in there was capable of harming me. The same couldn't be said for the others. Delaying the destruction of the building was necessary." To keep them from being crushed, at least. Though did that actually help in the long run? Was there something else that could've been done? He wasn't sure, but at lest he seemed to relax a bit.

"Thank you for your assistance."

Okay, at least things are calming down now. There was still a question of what could have been done better, but hindsight is perfect, is it not? Nothing could hurt you? Wow, and people call me a “tank.” Yeah, it might have been a joke but it was respectful.

Then he saw one of the people who looked to have escaped the fire, they were crying in the arms of the baker he was going to see. Something about this doesn’t make sense. The Royal Court ensures the integrity of the buildings yearly. He was not in any way insinuating that there was corruption going on from the throne, not at all, but something about this did not make sense. ”Always do the right thing…”... no worries. Just glad I was there.

Looking a little deeper at the two, he was starting to think. Call me crazy, but I don’t think that fire was an accident.

This was potentially a crime scene, but neither of them truly had the authority to conduct it the way it should be conducted. Sure, Uncle Thurion would not turn either of them down, or push them away, but they still needed to respect the laws and customs. We can’t do much around here right now. The Heavenheim City Guard will want to secure the area… excuse me! Standing and walking over to a woman.

“Thank the Val the two of you intervened.” She cried as she realized that these were the two who had helped. “The Gods have brought good fortune on us all.” She was still shaken up by the fire, just as everyone around was, but the fire department was getting the blaze under control and medical staff were tending to those who needed it the most. She explained that the fire had started suddenly, and without their help, many more could have been injured.

Never a concern… I was wondering if I could ask you a question. That woman over there, with the baker Alka. Is she the owner of this poor place?

The woman looked over and saw her, nodding. “Yes, that is Ilvod.”

How long has she owned the building?

“I believe she is new to the area…”

"Yes, they will-" Aris blinked slowly as he watched Connel step away to question a woman on the side. One of the first to get out, thankfully. Aris followed, briefly giving a smile. Proper greetings would have to come later, but they knew each other. Everyone here knew Aris, and in turn Aris knew them. Midvinter was his home with Zaiya Ceti Zaiya Ceti , and there was little chance Aris wouldn't know everyone with Zaiya's bubbly personality acting as the bridge.

"Thank you, Aiya. We'll help to get this figured out." Aiya dipped her head in thanks towards Aris.

"Ilvod is from a smaller town. They're kind from what I've seen."

Alka the baker had seen him once Ilvod had gathered herself enough to speak to authorities. She waved him over with a smile. That’s one thing I love about this place. Everyone is kind. Midvinter was not his home as it was Aris and Zaiya, but it was home to his mother, and now cousin Michael (apparently). He was here as much as he could not just to visit, but to show Lira around.

“Conservator Vanagor, ohh and Master Jedi Noble, it is so good to see the both of you. How are you?” He had known Alka for a long time. Next to… well… everyone… she was Buster’s favorite person and she loved the pup as well, always having a squeaky toy handy for him.” He didn’t know that she would know Aris, but it was no surprise. Heavenheim was close knit.

Connel of course smiled appreciatively. It’s good to see you Alka. I’m doing well thank you.

The woman looked around as if confused. “... and where is that boy of yours? … and what of this ‘lady friend’ I hear about? You will bring her by so I can meet her. Correct?” The smile was just how evident of Aris’ explanation of how kind the people are here.

Connel chuckled. He is at home, playing with Cooper(his mother’s Aak Dog).... and yesss we will come by for lunch before we leave.

“Good, now come. Speaking of lunch, I have something I would like the two of you to try…”

Connel looked over at the City Guard approaching the scene. They’re going to want to talk to us.

Alka just smirked. “Captain! Captain? These boys are hungry and I need to feed them. Will you come find us at the bakery?”

The City Guard just looked her way. “Yes Ms. Alka. They need to stay there though until we do.”

Alka just smiled and looked back at the two Jedi. “It’s settled, come.”

Connel just looked at Aris and shrugged. I guess it’s settled. We can talk to her there?

There was no getting out of food. Aris smiled softly, nodding once to Connel before he'd start to follow Alka. He wasn't going to argue against anyone here. "It's been a while. I didn't realize you had children. Congratulations on that, Connel." It was genuine, even if Aris was still rather stone faced from everything that was going on. The softness of his smile never really reaching his eyes outside the mention of children. Family was something important to Aris after all.

"Got a favored bread?"

When Aris congratulated him, Connel could not help but stifle a laugh. She is talking about “Buster”, my Aak-Dog, thank you for the sentiment though, I appreciate it. I did meet someone though, she’s here if you would like to meet her later. The bakery was, as usual, filled with wonderful smells as she gestured for them to take a seat. You don’t argue with Alka.

Taking a seat, Connel’s eyes trailed to someone sitting at a corner table. They were paying some serious attention to the two huge “non-Valkyri” individuals who just walked in.

I don’t know, they make so many pastries here, but there is this bread that they have that has a crunchy crust, almost like the dough is sour. How is life here? My mother loves it, but I know when she is trying to placate my worry over her. Congratulations on you and Zaiya… While he wasn’t trying to make small talk just for the sake of it, his eyes were still trailing towards that corner table.

Then Alka walked up with two very Artisan styled sandwiches. “Now… Eat!”

"I can keep up well enough in conversations, but you shouldn't jump topics so quick. You've a pup, not a child? Oh. Well, yes I'd love to meet her." That was about all he kept up on before his eyes followed Connel's. Strangers were rare, especially here. He'd take up the sandwich, eating slow for the moment.

"Life is good here. Zaiya and I have been enjoying it so far."

He was rambling, great.Apologies, I have never been any good with small talk, a bit of social anxiety, but I am working on it. He smiled to Alka as she was putting the sandwiches down, and picked up a half to take a bite (it was their thing, she would not leave him alone until he took a bite).

His eyes trailed on the individual again who was staring straight at him and then suddenly away in a clear panic. ~There is a clear concern at the corner table. Sorry, about the topic jumping, but trying not to bring it up out loud and cause a panic~

Yeah, Buster. He’s helped me with social anxiety, he stays with Lira when I am out on assignment.

"Must be handy." Aris spoke aloud, seemingly at random. He couldn't use the Force in such a way. It was, however, obvious that the person watching wasn't alright. He frowned faintly, nodding after a moment. "I'm glad you've found something to help you. Not that I was aware there was any issues for you though."

The more the individual watched them, the less Connel wanted to cause a problem here. The man was nervous, violently nervous and that could not come to fruition here. So as he took a bite of his sandwich, he slowly reached out through the Force and Altered the Environment, focusing solely on him. All the man, and no one else would see was more and more Jedi coming in and sitting down or ordering from the counter. Not making any moves, but enough to make him want to leave.

I learned to accept, and to an extent, embrace it. However, since my father died, I have felt a sense of responsibility to learn more and evolve. Than includes being able to actually talk to people without shutting down.

It was working. Only a matter of time now before the man got up and walked out, or ran.
