HEAVENHEIM

Home.

It’s not always what you want to see, but it’s where you want to be. Home is the place that you can retreat to after a long day of work, or a long day of adventuring. With this you know that you are safe and secure, protected from the dangers of the world around you, if only for a little while. Home is a place where you can relax, and if you are lucky, a place where you can spend time with your family and friends. It’s a place that you can call your own, a place that you can make your own, and a place that you can always return to, no matter where your adventures take you.

That is Heavenheim. That is the capital of Midvinter, and the culture created by the people of Midvinter and most of all, the Lion King himself, Thurion Heavenshield Thurion Heavenshield . Connel doesn’t get back to Heavenheim as often as he likes(make no mistake he is back a lot), but when he does, he makes the most of every second of it. The King is his “uncle”, and Heavenheim is his home. He moved his mother Chrysa Vanagor Chrysa Vanagor out here and she has flourished, he did not want her to be alone after Caltin died, and “family” was here so it made sense. Lira, his wife, WANTED to move here to be around her as well. Her parents taught her to be self-reliant so they were never as close as she would like, so this was a good way to have the same type of relationship without them getting in the way. His Gallinorese Mountain Aak Dog “Buster”? Well, he’s just happy to be here…

… and “walkies” by “Daddy”’s side is the absolute best part of his day and the best place to be.

What? You want to go in? The best part of being home is he can be happy here, he doesn’t have to be “stoic” “scary” “grr arg” Connel. He can just be Connel, and walk into the bakery that they are standing in front of, the one they walk into every single time they are here, and order the same thing every single time they are here. Where the baker smiles and has a treat ready and waiting for “her little baby Buster” as she calls him.

“Lord Vanagor!!!! It’s been too long!” (It’s been two days since he was last here)

Huh… Ohhh yeah… When the King helped promote Connel to Jedi Master, he made his nephew “Lord of the Realm” as well, and the people of Midvinter never let him forget it, not that he would want to. He just really doesn’t know how to respond to it. He’s Connel, not Lord Vanagor, maybe that is why he fit in with the royal family so well, he’s just an ordinary guy in an extraordinary world.

“Always trying to steal my husband! I’m watching you!” Lira Vanagor was always quick with a playful barb to the older baker, always knowing her to be harmless and always in good spirits and fun.

“Ohhhh I’ll steal my little baby boy Buster first!” She of course had a treat ready for him, and he of course had a dance ready for her. He was so happy to see his friends and everyone was his friend here.

It was going to be a good day.

Three days and three nights had passed since Mysa Snowstrider had flown back to the nest of Heavenheim and found her Papa waiting. Since then she had spent most of her time in the Tomb of Coci Heavenshield Coci Heavenshield deep within the Kingswood. She barely slept, barely ate, barely drank, lost to prayer and meditation and recollection of all her dearest Mamma and Master had taught her. If not for Thurion Heavenshield Thurion Heavenshield 's intermittent visits, the girl might have begun to wither away but of course the great Lion would not permit such for his daughter.
As she emerged on that fourth day, it was with an increased clarity. It had not yet quite reached the stage of purpose, but it was better than the rot and exile she had known for the past years. Her Mamma might not have been here in person, but she was present in spirit, in that which she had instilled within her children, within her people.
Felix lifted his head as she drifted past him, where he lay at the step leading into the tomb, then with a great shake of head and body the mighty frir saw fit to follow. Not a word was uttered as she walked beneath the red-leaf trees which had wept alongside her, though her left hand did drift down slowly to settle within her beloved's fur. She fussed behind his ear as they wound their way down from solitude to reincorporate themselves with the City at large.
Most did not recognize their Princess, and for good reason. She hardly held herself like one, nor did she dress in finery or even the standard for a city of such wealth and craftsmanship, she was a huntress through and through, all leathers and furs patched with wear and tear. A quiver full of arrows bounced against her thigh, while her bow was unstrung and set within its holder on her back. Accompanying the quiver on her belt was a shortsword and hunting knife, and tucked more securely toward the back, beneath her beloved oversized cloak, was her hilt.
Mysa had not carried that reminder of her Mamma in quite some time, she had left it behind when she went into self-imposed exile. Papa had brought it to her on her second day in the tomb.
It had certainly played its part in drawing her back toward the light.
Yet while the majority saw her as just a grubby huntress blown in from the deeper wilds, there were those few and far between who remembered her all the same. Her short stature, her snow-white hair, and piercing blue eyes... and the frir at her side.
And as she passed the bakery that morning, the smell of fresh bread clinging to the air, one haggard old voice cried out:
"The Princess... She returns!"
And upon hearing it, Mysa felt a wave of anxiety planting her feet to the cold stone floor.

“... The Princess, she returns!”

Those were the words spoken by the baker’s assistant.

Nida Heavenshield Nida Heavenshield ? Connel went to look outside, but he did not see the Princess that he was thinking of, he saw instead a young woman with hair of white and eyes of blue. He had maybe met her once or twice before, but not enough to remember her name. “Mysa?”

Highness? He stepped outside the shop, looking at her from the corner of his eye, I am Connel, nice to see you again, my lady.

“I’m Lira!” Lira stepped out holding a TAUGHT leash as Buster was trying his darndest to meet a new best friend.

And suddenly, just as she had feared, the hermit was immediately waylaid by strangers seeking favour. It wasn't that she inherently minded being stopped or spoken to, but after years of near-perfect solitude it was rather overwhelming. Like a startled Vhaanir she froze in place, eyes wide and pupils blown, as a man in a flour-coated apron stepped out into her path to meet her.
He was swiftly followed by a man, a woman, and a hound, the latter of which got a low rumbled growl from Felix who set himself between Mysa and the crowd at once, his hackles raised.
The pale-eyed woman looked between the group, which was fast becoming a gathering as others on the high-street converged inward to see what all of the fuss was about.
"I..." Her hand fell to Felix's back, soothing herself as much as the sabertooth as her fingers carded through coarse fur. "Again?" She was doing her best to breathe good and deep and calm, but it was too much too fast; Mysa took half a step back. "Do I know--"
"Mysa!" a voice called out. "Dawn Blessed!" cried another.
Her world began to tunnel.

No…

He did not recognize her. He did not remember her at all, no shame in that. Maybe Connel had heard the name, but that was the extent of it.

Forgive me, I thought you were Prince Thirdas wife Nida for a moment… … though her hair is purple. Forgive the mistake. I’m Connel Vanagor.

“Lord Vanagor… have you met the Princess?” Connel just sighed and smiled, while Buster sat down next to him and waited for permission to go say “Hi” to her. Not from Conne, but the Princess herself. You’re dressed…. Are you a Valkyri?

“Forgive my husband, he sucks at small talk. Are you okay?” Lira was a pretty good room reader…

Another step back followed, her gaze drifting away from the man and his hound to the greater crowd around them. Felix was growling as the citizens of Heavenheim pressed in closer, some reaching toward her despite the snapping jaws of the frir. He did not bite - not yet at least - but he warned and he scared off a couple of hands.
Then: "ENOUGH."
A gruff voice boomed, parting the crowd in an instance as a towering figure forced his way forward and set a hand atop the pommel of his blade. Unlike the others, he was not looking at the Princess, he had his back to her; instead, he faced the masses. "Return to your business." Only when the gathering dwindled down to the much smaller, immediate group, did the man turn to face her, taking a knee and bowing his head at once. "It is good to see you home, Princess."
Though his hair was longer, and his beard scruffier, Mysa recognized the man at once. "Oljver" she breathed, stepping forward to embrace her swornsword in an earnest hold. "Oh, thank the Gods..."
The Valkyri returned her embrace, though his attention shifted from his charge to the one who had identified himself as Connel. "Lord Vanagor" he greeted with a respectful nod of his head. After ensuring Mysa was unharmed, Oljver Stormward rose back to his full height and turned to shake Connel's hand. "Lady Vanagor... Buster." He smiled. "Her Highness has need of rest, perhaps you might join us in the Lion's Den?"
The Swornsword had pledged himself to Mysa when she was but a small child, he knew her well... well enough to see that she was in the midst of panic and needed a quieter, calmer space to decompress.
"Tea, sweet Princess?" he whispered, and when she nodded he set a hand upon her shoulder and gave it a squeeze.
"F-Forgive me," Mysa finally said, now that she had less to focus on. "I... I am Mysa, it is nice to meet you both, and your boy." Then, as an aside to Felix: "Calm, all is well."
At once, the frir ceased his growling and settled at her feet, watching Buster curiously.

Now Oljver he recognized, all three of them did (Buster was dancing)…

He may not know Mysa, but he knows the symptoms of social anxiety when he sees it. He also knows how to handle it as he has it himself. He grins at Mysa. Oljver, always a pleasure. Patting Buster on the head. No apologies necessary, I myself have social anxiety, and it’s only with my wife and this guy next to me that I’m actually able to talk to people without a mask on.

Buster just happily leaned into the pats and watched his new best friend he hadn’t gotten permission to meet yet with a smile. Will you be in town long?

“What my husband is trying to say is that we’d love to walk to visit with his uncle Thurion if that is where you're headed. He just got back on planet.” Lira was a pretty good room reader…

Oljver was the first to give Buster the attention he so desperately deserved, but it was not long before Mysa reached toward the pup too. She had an easier time with animals, it was why she had kept her two companions throughout her self-imposed exile, one feathered and one furred.
She crouched down to properly fuss Buster, keeping her gaze on something easier to handle than the now-smaller group around her.
"Uncle Thurion?" she finally said, slowly looking up at the woman - then to the man. "Papa is your Uncle?"
Oljver had stepped in behind her, standing as her shadow and protector; he was allowing her to do the talking now, and would not rush her back to her feet and up toward the Den.

Buster was a happy boy, so all was right with the world as he saw and experienced it.

Adoptive, but yeah. He told her the story about uncle Thurion and his own father Caltin Vanagor Caltin Vanagor as they fought side by side defending Tython from the Brotherhood of the Maw. How a meteor was being dragged into the atmosphere to create a catastrophic event. Caltin had spent his energy in a massive Force Repulse but destroyed the rock in time. Thurion stood over and defended him while he regained his strength. He fell that day and could have died, but Caltin brought him back to Midvinter simply because the Lion King had protected him. The rest was history, Heavenshield declared Caltin a “brother” from that point on and a member of the House and all of HIS family would too. The fought side by side countless times. He’s been a father figure to me just as much as Caltin was before he passed…

His smile was of pure love and reverence. He gave my mother a patch of land outside Heavenheim, she was able to build a beautiful homestead. She loves it here.

“It’s really a wonderful place, and feeling of closeness. I’m from Corellia, my family is close but this puts them to shame… in the best possible way” Lira was a pretty good room reader…

Mysa listened to the story, the explanation, then slowly nodded her head.
"That sounds like Papa" she agreed, as she slowly found her feet and rested a hand each atop Felix and Buster's heads. "His is a lineage of found family." She would know, he had found her, loved her like his own, even when the universe tried to make it otherwise.
"Come," she said, finally feeling the strength to carry on up the hill toward the Den, not minding that she was going back the way she had come, "I would very much like some tea." Something to eat would not go amiss, either, but Mysa would not trouble the kitchen staff if it was an inconvenient time. Perhaps she could sneak a couple of jam sandwiches or tarts, as she had when she was a child.
She smiled sadly to herself, all her mind could pull up at the thought of yummy jammy treats was Darien Cordel Darien Cordel ... Gods how she missed him. He was not gone as the others were, he was hiding away alongside her brother on some random planet she did not know the name of, but the distance was still there. She was still left missing. Wanting.
Mysa could only hope the pair were happy.

Buster was in heaven with the scratches he was receiving from her right now. It felt like he was being torn apart, but in a good way, a way that made him feel alive and alive in a way that he had never felt before.

“Tea sounds lovely!” Lira exclaimed with a smile.

Lead the way. The thought of catching up with and learning about another side to this family, was something that had been on his mind for a while now, and this was the perfect opportunity for that to happen. Thank you, Mysa.

“May I ask you a question, Mysa? Oliver? I was just wondering… what is it like being a Valkyri? Is it spiritual? Is it purely ritualistic? Physical?

"Princes--" Before Oljver could fully correct the way Connel addressed her, Mysa nudged the man in the ribs and shook her head.
"Family is family" she reminded the swornsword. Family did not use titles.
"Of course, Princess."
As they made their way up the main avenue toward the castle, Mysa considered the question Lira had posed. "I'm only an honorary Valkyri" she confessed, "It is why I am so much smaller than my companion here. But... I find it spiritual, yes. Not ritualistic, though. We honour the Gods but... no, ritualistic is the wrong word for it."
Oljver smiled, walking to Mysa's right while Felix took her left. "I imagine it feels just as it does for you, Lady Vanagor, we are physically similar if you overlook the height difference. Though, we do not feel the cold so much as you."

“Apologies on the improper address.” Lira actually felt terrible, she understood you respected the station if not the person and even if she didn’t care if she was a “Lady” and Connel didn’t care if he was a “Lord” they were what they were and it meant something still.

Lead the way. Spiritual. That’s interesting, I like that.

“You’re not wrong about that.” Lyra said laughing. “I can get cold in a sauna, but my husband here. I think I was born in a freezer. This is his jacket, I stole it from him.”

You are warrior born, correct? Not in the religious sense like in Mandalorians, but I mean your family's history is one of warriors, correct? He didn’t know if he was right or not but it seemed like something to ask about and a logical reasoning.

It was still a lot to adjust to, having people talking to her, but Mysa was doing her very best to breathe through it. She was glad to be the one leading the way, it meant that she was not forced to look at anyone as they went. Looking and listening at the same time would have been just a little bit... much.
"I am," Oljver stated, of his heritage, "My pa' fought and fell with the Phoenix King, and my Ma' before that under the Dawnbringer." He reached out and oh so gently touched Mysa's shoulder. "It only makes sense that I fight along, and for, our Lion King's kin."
His smile turned into a slight smirk, though.
"Even if she disappears into the wilds for years at a time, and does not tell me when or where."
"I am sorry about that, old friend," Mysa whispered, earning herself a firm squeeze of the shoulder.
"I'm just glad you're back, Princess; you were missed. Dearly."
By now they were almost at the Den.

Lira was enthralled in the story. Maybe it was because of her father, Xurian… a Mandalorian who gave up life when his love was pregnant with her because he wanted her to have a normal life. “So, you’re like Echani, in how and what they believe about combat?” She knew it was a loaded question, but she wanted to know more about the man in front of her, the man who was so different from her father, yet so similar at the same time.

It’s always been my privilege to know you Olvjer… and now you, Highness.

“Mine too.” Lyra saw the cave. “Thanks for this, people not on planet usually look at Connel and turn the other way. He usually pretends to be unbothered, but I know it’s not the case… he needs to be able to talke to people.”

Thanks… I think. He actually laughed.

While Mysa focused on getting them to the castle at the top of the hill, Oljver kept their guests occupied with talks of past glory and familial ties.
"I do not know what an eh-shani is, My Lady, nor their view on combat. For me... it is a necessity, but there is so much more to life than an endless fight. All those who can fight to defend those they love, and those they serve, should; but that is just my thought."
"The Lion's Den" she whispered, in awe of the structure. "It is night and day from the Longhalls of Tháinbroek, isn't it, old friend?" Her heart ached at the thought of the former Capital of Midvinter, it had been torn asunder and so many had been lost to the Vinterbound scourge. Her hand curled more firmly into Felix's fur, grounding herself lest those spirits drag her back to isolation.
"Have you been back, Princess?" Oljver asked, "It is the City of the Beorni now."
"Good" Mysa said, without turning to look at him. "I am glad their homeland was restored to them... let their peaceful revelry soothe the spirits of unrest." She paused. "Father, and Grandpa... They were brought here to rest, yes?"
She had seen the towering statues, of course, but that did not mean their remains had made the journey too.
At the gates to the Castle, Mysa found herself bowed to. "This way, Princess," the guards invited. Of course, Lord and Lady Vanagor were greeted too.
"Have we missed breakfast?" Oljver asked, as they passed into the courtyard and on toward the main body of the Castle.

“I get that, so it’s not a ‘way of life’ but a necessity. See, the Echani believe that you are who you are through combat.” As they had approached the structure, she had smiled and walked in as if she owned the place, having been through here several times before with Connel, and his mother Chrysa, as well as alone with Buster. Buster was doing his happy dance.

If you don’t mind, I would like to know more about this. Connel had been off planet a lot more than he had liked, what with his assignments with the New Jedi Order, the war, the campaigns, his search for aunt Coci Heavenshield Coci Heavenshield to help bring that smile back to his uncle’s face.

Thank you gentlemen, always a privilege. Connel nodded, watching Buster’s little head bob as he was scratched by each guardsmen. I am more a soldier myself. He spoke about the various missions he had been on, Omega Squad, what he had learned from his father Caltin, and his time.

Oljver frowned, then shook his head. "No, not like that, not for me at least. That sounds... like a difficult life, to have to fight simply to be yourself. Look around, My Lady, there is plenty for Valkyri to do, we have fine craftsmen, and hardy farmers, poets and dancers and musicians... We have our warriors, yes, but so do all peoples who are not fortunate enough to know complete peace."
Mysa led the way across the courtyard, and once they were inside the main keep she let out a breath of relief.
"Excuse me, miss," she said, as she flagged down a passing servant, "Could you bring me to a withdrawing room, and see that my guests and I have tea?"
"Why would I--"
It took seeing Oljver stepping forward for the girl's identity to register, at which point the woman's face turned ghostly white and she hastily bowed her head.
"Of course, Princess, p-please, forgive me, I did not--"
"No apologies necessary," she said, stepping forward to gently touch the woman's cheek. "I know, I must seek out a bath and scrub up better..." She smiled, humour in her eyes, "But first, we have guests."
"Yes, Your Highness, right away."
She hurried along to lead them to a nice quiet parlour, and along the way flagged down another member of staff to see refreshments brought.
"Something t'eat wouldn't go amiss either, Miss Eira."
"Yes, that too," she added.
The parlour was nice and intimate, a soft rug covered most of the stone floors, a grand hearth flanked by bookcases, and tapestries upon the wall, gave it a cozy feel. Large armchairs and a sofa were set around a low table.
Mysa immediately sought out a leather armchair and sank into it, Felix curling at her feet; Oljver did not sit, he stood to the side of the door and watched.

“His father was like 900 years old…” She laughed as Buster curled up and enjoyed looking around at everyone like he was surveying his kingdom, then licked a finger.

My father, he was around during the Clone Wars… Knighted just before the battle of Coruscant. He told the story of how his father was a proud Jedi Knight and helped fight off the 501st during the Purge, enabling a lot of younglings to escape and make it out of the Temple and to safety. He went on to say that his father was able to escape to the outer rim and wild space, never to be heard from for years, but acted as a vigilante. He ended up hooking up with the Rebel Alliance and was even on the planet Endor. He was there during the Battle of Endor and helped take down the second Death Star.

He was a part of the Jedi Praxeum… Connel explained further about how his mother was once an Inquisitor but was changing. She needed help and he went to save her on Rhen Var, they both ended up being frozen separately in the permafrost for 860 years. When he found her, she gave up the Dark Side for him…. I’m proof of that,

As Connel explained about his late father, Mysa turned her gaze toward the fire and soaked in the warmth. She had not been inside like this for a very long time, barring her mother's tomb, it felt strange to be comfortable again, to have something soft beneath her body and at her back.
After a moment of adjusting she leaned forward and began to remove her boot. They had been ruined over the years, and she had done her best to patch them up but she was no cobbler and her leatherworking skills only got her so far. When the soles gave out? Well... She set them aside, unsure of whether they were even really salvageable, then wiggled her toes before the hearth. Her wool socks were soaked through, but they would dry she knew. Those had been darned more times than she could count, the thread never matched the original wool so it was more like a hodgepodge of colour now. Patchwork. She had grown.. fond of them.
"I heard tales of the Jedi of that Republic, of their hubris," she went on to say, "I am sorry he was there to witness the fall-out, that could not have been easy for him. I doubt it was something he easily recovered from; seeing those you care about destroyed en masse is... there's nothing like it. It changes a person."
Oljver took half a step closer, his expression softening. He knew better than any what it was to lose those he loved in acts of great terror and violence, they were kindred like that, it was why he had so readily pledged himself to her.
"I am glad that he survived, and that we are able to see one another now as a result of his resilience. You have that in you, too, even if you must wear a mask to let it show. The strength of those before us trickles down through our roots."
A knock sounded, the arrival of tea and breakfast treats, but Mysa's gaze remained fixed upon the fire. She had no love of it, the crackling sparks, once she had been rendered petrified by it but these days it was more of a wariness.
"I've got it," Oljver said, as he approached the door to help bring in the trays. One was laden with a teapot, cups, and accoutrements such as milk, cream, and sugar, the other had flaky breakfast pastries, honey, bread, and fruit.
