That's pretty funny. I remember once PM'ing Kaine years ago about submitting a specific Republic sniper rifle to the Factory in opposition to the Sith's sniper rifle he built. I wanted to make sure that they weren't so different so as to give one Faction an advantage against the other. Lol. I thought that if our tech was semi-equal that the Fleeters would have more fun.

Needless to say. I sorely underestimated some peoples need to Arms Race the Factory. Lulz.

If, on the other hand, you want to create a thread solely for the purpose of calling to task a group of people who, despite repeated attempts to impugn their integrity and professionalism and malign their motives have stayed remarkably calm about the whole thing, then all you're going to get is a reputation for being a curmudgeon.

But again, this is all digression from the original topic, which was to discuss people's motivations for tech creation.

That some people are motivated by honorable reasons: such as keeping track/a written record of their characters clothing and equipment, even if it is barely more than standard.

That some people just use the factory because they have fun making things, even if those things never really get used.

That some people use it to make a unique version of something for their character, such as a personal ship.

That some people do it to encourage an arms race, which creates the vicious cycle of one-up-manship that gives people headaches.

In other words, people use it for varying reasons, some noble and some less than noble. The point of all of this was to bring out the fact that there ARE some people who use the factory for nefarious reasons that aren't motivated by IC, and to remind people that this is a game that is NOT about winning everything. If someone won everything, the game would eventually end. If your mentality for using the factory is to win every engagement, you will ultimately be writing a flat character because that mentality will not allow your character to change. It affects your fellow RPers as well.

Don't stop using the factory, just make sure that you know why you are using it and how that can affect you, your characters, and your fellow RPers.

Putting other people before yourself, or your love of a Factory sub. I think that's a noble lesson to learn. For all of us.

It does not reflect poorly on the board at all. We're a board founded on freedom. Freedom of creativity, to do what you want. Who cares about their tech? No one said their super special blaster rifle of supernova potential had to be acknowledged as such. You control the damage you take, and guess what that means?

What their subs do to you is optional.

I will say that 100% of all submissions that RPJs or Administrators have tagged that might prove to be conflicting, potential to be conflicting or otherwise cause issues are tagged with some line of: "This will be reviewed if abused." "Abuse and beware." etc.

Just my thoughts.

They make sure to let you know when they approve something that could be abused if you're a twat. Josonranrar, my hammer in my sig, is one such thing. As is my A-10 cannon.

I've been told I word things poorly at times, which is probably true. I write in a constant, nearly unfiltered stream.

But as I said all along the point of this had everything to do with motivations and the effect those motivations have on everything. I'm just trying to encourage fair play in the hope that people will grow to learn, as many of us who have been doing this for a long time have, that RP isn't about winning, it's about cooperatively telling a story. Besides, sometimes it is more fun to lose than it is to win.

Otherwise give them little in the posts till there is a back and forth. You'll never get on with everyone, that's impossible, but its a fairly good rule of thumb for large threads like you are speaking about.

But like I said with Raien, there is no god tech or god weapon, there are just armor/weapons that people haven't built much tech to counter in certain factions. The factory is part of the meta game, and until someone shows me a sub without half a dozen easy counters I still won't know what the fuss is about. - Employ some companies, browse their large catalogs, have a look what's out there or just write up a few subs yourself.

Bluntly then I think the post more relates to the spirit of roleplaying in general then, then about the factory and I think its clouding the issue using it as the talking point.

Otherwise of course people are going to speak about the factories pros and cons when using it as a basis for the discussion.

It provided a good base point for discussion. Better than calling specific people out would have done. All arguments must have examples/supporting evidence and a conclusion. The factory was my example. The factory is an Avenue for people to RP in a manner that is not conducive to good community. It is absolutely relevant to the conclusion.

Nothing in the factory has no counter - The factory is largely a mute point in the more general discussion you say you are making, because its a tool not a way of using that tool.

You'd need to expand the discussion to everything to do it justice, NPCs, Tech, Force Powers, PC Numbers, Meta Knowledge etc. Thusly it IS clouding the discussion or at least odd how you are referencing it then telling others that's not what you mean in your posts. One or the Other, is this about the factory or not?

It is but it isnt. The overall goal was the conclusion I made above. To reach said conclusion I used the factory and perceived issues with it as a basis for reminding people that it's all about fair and fun gameplay for all involved. That includes what is made in the factory.

I could use the factory to discuss motives. That's why I brought it up.

If I want to discuss every flaw of the factory, I will make another thread. Now, you are digression this thread from the conclusion above by continuously bringing up my use of the factory as an example to reach a conclusion. Please stop.

Its an open forum discussion, that happens when two people don't share it.

But I apologize if I ruffled any feathers, I agree with you in spirit just not in method as the focus of the discussion neglects a lot of what causes the tech to be made. NFU vs FU balance as a key factor for example.
