HISTORICAL INFORMATION
Started roughly twenty thousand years ago by the Emperor Junnin who was legendary for his appetites both of food, weapons, opulent powers and of course women... or so the legends say. He at one point had over eighty children. To protect his daughters he started the Sansin... a school/religious order that would see them protected and taught to be caste daughters who served their father. The eldest daughter he had Ujiko was sent to an island where all of them were kept. A great reef that was said to tear the hulls of ships, harsh winters that saw the island locked behind lock caps... all of it to keep his daughters away from the Imperial court until he found a purpose to use them for.

It was not all bad though, being isolated on an island they saw some of the finest education, reading, writing, math skills, sewing, manners and cooking skills. They were given some fo the finest accommodations, warmest furs and richest foods that could be brought to them. Their training to be political tools served a purpose as lords who wanted to marry their children and become an extension of the royal family that would have a line to the throne should the worse happen. They were taught about the different houses and how to identify their lords and ladies... taught about what at court was proper and what was an insult.

The initial decline of the Sansin came about when the emperor faced his sister in a civil war. Usurping the throne and exiling her from Atrisia and then sending the mother of Nine Lives Nine Lives into deep space on one of the first exploration missions to really conquer outside the Commonwealth. Kōnin the battleborn Emperor and Sumiko the empress that never was faced each other and died plunging from the bridge of the ancestor into a lake of fire below. The empresses son taking over and being placed on the throne and he largely sought to reform the Commonwealth first by doing away with the practices that saw family members and firstborne children in "schools" where they were under guards to prevent rebellion.

With it out of practice for the next several thousand years it wouldn't be talked about except in history holos and stories about the different emperors and empresses. With the return of the Jishi era and the Commonwealths attempts to rebuild itself the practice was brought about along with miyabi a love for aesthetics. To handle many of the children who were orphaned with the attacks the Empress and Emperor adopted them, dedicating a wing of the Neo-Jar'kai palace in its construction to their housing and education. The main rooms hold around two hundred princesses while the eastern wing hold two hundred princes that are trained to be provincial leaders with the reconstruction efforts.
