STANDARD FEATURES

  • All standard features. The Kraken comes fully equipped with the whole standard array of shields, systems and components that are normally associated with vessels of this size and class.
ADVANCED SYSTEMS
STRENGTHS
  • Assault Star Destroyer. It is fast, well-armoured and packs a mean punch.
  • The Kraken has been equipped with a Quicksilver drive. In addition to advanced hyperdrives the Kraken can microjump with precision to close with the enemy. With its ability to jump ‘through’ an enemy’s position, the Quicksilver allows a ship to pass through and behind an enemy battle line.
  • Gadgets. The incorporation of specialised tech such as a Gemcutter can allow it to detect most cloaked ships that would normally go unnoticed. It can detect hyperspace anomalies, communications, and incoming vessels and quickly relay communications to allied forces. The Kraken has an Anti-Ion Emission Tracers to prevent its hyperspace travel from being tracked and a Hyperwave Inertial Momentum Sustainer to allow it to travel through interdiction fields and gravity wells. The Unity Processing Matrix acts as a powerful droid brain. It allows for better predictive aiming, power distribution and improved calculation of hyperspace jumps. Moreover, automation reduces required crew size.
  • The Kraken comes equipped with a comprehensive stealth suite, including a Stygium cloaking device, a gravitic modulator, Reflec coating and thrust thrace dampers make the ship almost undetectable. It also features a number of secondary stealth systems.
  • When active, the SLAM drive greatly boosts the Kraken's speed. This improves its ability to pursue ships that would normally be faster than it, or alternately extract itself from a dangerous situation.
WEAKNESSES
  • When the Quicksilver is used, the ship cannot fire or launch attack craft in the post/round it is used in. The Quicksilver is a once per battle item. It cannot be used again in the time scale of a battle. Furthermore, it is possible to prevent a breakthrough by positioning ships in such a way that the Quicksilver cannot be safely used. The ship may move ‘through’ other ships and debris, but not planets or moons and may not appear in the same space as another ship. It can also not be used for ramming.
  • Low hangar capacity, which means it has less attack and support craft than is common for a vessel of its size and class. This can be disadvantageous in battle.
  • The Kraken's engines are powerful, but also represent a chink in its armour. Though protected, they are considerably more vulnerable than the rest of the ship. If one can get into position, they are vulnerable to attack from behind.
  • Cloaking device is powerful, but has certain limitations. The Stygium Stealth Array is powerful, but Stygium-cloaked vessels need to decloak to fire. Thus, any time the ship fires at someone, it has to decloak briefly. Chatting on comms will also cause detection even if the cloak is active. Moreover, the Stygium stealth array is power-hungry, so it cannot be active all the time.
  • The SLAM drive's speed boost at a cost, as the power requirements are significant. It reduces the ship's manouevrability. Moreover, it causes several weapons' systems to shutdown and require a ninety second reboot once engaged.
DESCRIPTION

The Kraken is a unique Star Destroyer produced by Archangel at Enyo Typhos' behest. Its design focuses on speed, agility, defence and firepower. The Kraken has been conceived as a stealthy linebreaker. With powerful shields, hull and a potent array of armaments, it can take a beating and dish out. Moreover, it is fast and has been equipped with a powerful Stygium stealth array. This makes it almost undetectable.

For a ship of its size and class, the Kraken is quite fast and manoeuvrable. This allows it to keep up with smaller ships as well as act in a fast attack role. As a tradeoff, its hangar capacity is far below average for a Star Destroyer. As a result it has few attack and support craft. The Kraken has an array of defensive weapons to protect itself against enemy attack craft, but its small hangar capacity is still a vulnerability.

The warship has been equipped with a Quicksilver Micro-Jump Engine. Originally this device was designed by the Contingency, but it was appropriated by Archangel in the aftermath of the strange Battle of Tartarus. It allows capital ships to rapidly close distance between themselves and the enemy. Once per battle, a ship equipped with Quicksilver can suddenly move forward half the standard starship engagement speed worth of distance, though there are a number of caveats. Rather than exposed bridge tower, the Kraken has a CIC-style internal bridge. As the bridge is hidden inside the ship, it cannot be easily targeted by enemy bombardment. The Kraken features internal defences like droids, ray shields and airlock traps to make life difficult for boarders.

In keeping with Archangel design philosophy, the ship has a powerful droid brain. The Unity Processing Matrix uses a modified entechment process that avoids the usual pitfalls associated with entechment, such as keeping unstable organics in a state of constant agony. Instead the organics are killed, then their essence is rendered down and converted into a part of an elaborate computer system. This is not an AI, as it lacks any form of independence, it allows multiple organics to be forged into a single powerful piece of technology. When plugged into a spaceship, as is the case here, the Unity acts as a powerful droid brain. The machine has a superior ability to handle advanced calculations, predictions and tactical situations.

This results in improvements in areas such as power distribution, targeting, calculation of hyperspace and micro-jumps etc. Moreover, automations keeps down crew size requirements. The Kraken features powerful communication systems that allow it to encrypt and transmit messages over vast distances. It also has devices that allow it to detect many cloaked ships or receive some form of early warning. Batteries of turbolasers, ion cannons, solar ionization cannons, plasma railguns, null burst projectors and variable missile launchers give it a lot of firepower. Moreover, the energy siphon cannons enable it to steal energy from other ships to recharge its own shields or other weapons, though the weapon has less range than a turbolaser.

Due to power requirements, the Stygium stealth array cannot be used all the time. Moreover, the ship must decloak before firing. Aside from the Stygium crystals, the Kraken has various other gadgets such as modulators, dampeners and Reflec coating. These ensure that the ship is still difficult, though not impossible, to detect when its cloak is not active. In contrast to Archangel's old administration, Enyo has not wholly dispensed with organic minions. However, most of her minions are droids. So while crew quarters and other features organic crews require exist, they are a lot smaller than would be typical. This means that more space can be used productively. In addition, it makes infiltration more difficult.

Incidentally, Enyo strongly disapproves of the name Kraken. Her name for the Star Destroyer is Autonomous Capital Warship 3a or ACW3a. Her posse thinks that is boring, so they came up with Kraken. Enyo protested that the ship has no protrusions like tentacles which would make sense for such a term. One of the posse just sighed and said that Enyo 'just didn't get figurative language'.
