OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
GENERAL INFORMATION
  • Name: The Ersansyr (literally "Songbirds" in Sith), Sith Sirens, or occasionally Sea Witches.
  • Designation: Sentient
  • Origins: Yavin 8 | The Primyn Group
  • Average Lifespan: ~200 GSY
  • Estimated Population: Rare
  • Description: The Ersansyr are a relatively recent addition to the Galaxy; originating as one of Darth Prospero's many ambitious projects, they are most commonly found within Sith-Imperial space. They are not, however, inherently loyal or intrinsically Dark, unlike many beings altered by the Sith. Notable quirks include strange eyes, subtle gills on the neck, sharp nails, and a fondness for haggling, politics, and debate. Most are polyglots and almost all have a fondness for water, especially large bodies of it, though swimming pools will do in a pinch. They have the ability to influence the minds of others, especially the unaware and/or weak-willed, and sport limited shapeshifting.
PHYSICAL INFORMATION
  • Breathes: Type 1 (Amphibious)
  • Average Height of Adults: 1.7 metres
  • Average Length of Adults: 2.5 metres
  • Skin Colour: Variable, often pale.
  • Hair Colour: Black, White, Red, Blue, Green, and Brown, as well as shades thereof.
  • Distinctions: While their forms can, at times, appear quite alien (see, e.g., the middle image in the spoiler), Ersansyr are typically encountered in a form not all too dissimilar from a human; their irises tend to be luminescent or black and without any visible pupils (can wear cosmetic lenses), the subtle gills on their neck are a permanent feature, and they are typically hairless outside the head. They are generally considered attractive by human standards, if occasionally a bit... unnerving. Unlike some depictions, they are by no means an all-female species, though natural reproduction does tend to result in a roughly 1:2 male to female ratio; transformations/artificial means have no such set ratio.
  • Races: N/A, but there are significant cultural differences between transformed Melodie and those transformed from entirely different species.
  • Force Sensitivity: High; a small minority are Force Sensitive and a large minority Force Attunened. Force Users often display an affinity for abilities that resemble their natural gifts, such as Force Scream (often controllable) and Mind Tricks, but can develop as broadly as any other.
STRENGTHS
  • Enthralling Song: The Ersansyr are gifted with incredibly advanced vocal cords able to generate a cornucopia of sounds, most famously in order to influence others, often without their knowledge, in a way similar to but superior to Umbarans; while unaffected by Ysalamiri and the like, this ability does not work against droids and is only semi-reliable against the Force Dead, leading many to hypothesise ties to the Force. Such subtle influence takes time and is less useful against those wary of it, which is why they sometimes attempt more direct techniques, up to and including complex songs or melodious commands that can sway the weak-willed as surely as mind control, with comparable limitations.
  • Sonic Scream: So developed are their vocal cords, an Ersansyr is able to unleash a sonorous scream comparable in intensity to a sonic weapon; placing significant strain on their throats, especially if strong enough to kill, such acts see limited use unless desperate.
  • Skinchanger: Not only are the Ersansyr amphibious, they also possess limited shapeshifting to adapt to changing circumstances; legs for land, a tail/octopi "arms" for the sea, and sleek scales and vicious claws/teeth for when combat is inevitable - or to finish off enthralled prey.
WEAKNESSES
  • Low Tolerance: While their respiratory system is incredibly advanced, the same cannot be said for the systems used to break down dangerous substances; Ersansyr have a particularly low tolerance for alcohol and require smaller doses to be affected by most poisons.
  • Neck Breather: Unusually enough, the gill-like organs on their necks run double-duty processing air both under and above water; while it frees up their mouth for their famously unending songs/oration (best not to give someone being influenced unsubtly time to recover), this quirk of their biology prevents them from using most types of gas masks and many types of helmet-based life support.
  • Skinchanger: Even their limited shapeshifting can cause problems with equipment, clothing, armour, and the like; furthermore, they struggle to make internal changes to the torso and head, significantly curtailing their potential compared to more flexible shapeshifters.
CULTURE
  • Diet: Omnivore; while able to partake of most food sources favoured by near-humans, their unusually high protein requirements would seem to favour a primarily carnivorous diet if deprived of access to modern agricultural and food processing technologies. Given an unusually high metabolism, obesity is all but unheard of, despite a fondness for sweets; Ersansyr require on average ~20% more nutrients than humans.
  • Communication: Ersansyr tend to communicate with their own kind in Basic or Melodese; an aptitude for social interaction and a remarkable gift for learning new languages (though most certainly not to the point of being comparable to protocol droids) has led some to assume them telepathic, though this is not actually the case. They are, however, able to produce pheromones comparable to those of Zeltrons or Falleen. In much the same way as whales, their song can travel vast distances underwater.
  • Technology Level: Galactic Standard, for the most part, though those converted from the Melodie are likely to be less familiar with technology than the average galactic citizen, at least initially. Familiarisation courses are commonplace, however.
  • Religion/Beliefs: Despite being altered through a combination of bioengineering and Alchemy, the Ersansyr are very much free-willed; some among them, especially those changed from Sith loyalists, adhere to the Cabal of Typhojem or other Dark Side cults, though this is much less common amongst the altered Melodie among them, who primarily agreed to the procedure out of wanderlust, not loyalty.
  • General Behaviour:
    • Social Structure and Leadership: The Ersansyr can assimilate well enough into conventional galactic society, but where they form communities of their own peculiarities shine through; leaders are often chosen by the eloquence with which they debate or through strange contests of will where they attempt to influence each other into, say, crossing a line using only song. Social skills are absolutely vital to social standing, even more so than in other societies, though truly exceptional skill elsewhere can compensate.
    • Childhood and Maturity: Perhaps due to their Melodie heritage, Ersansyr tend to either be extremely attentive or rather lax parents; unlike the Melodie they do not change at the age of twenty (though that is when they are formally considered adults; legal adulthood may vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction), instead gradually learning how to master their abilities. They can be born on land (most common) or in water and adapt instinctively, though only manage the other with practice, usually between the age of four and six.
    • Reproductive Habits: While able to reproduce normally (shapeshifting is not a problem, as their ability to affect their head and torso is limited to begin with; too many sensitive parts), many Ersansyr prefer exowombs for the simple reason that the current generation had to be quite comfortable with bioengineering to agree to the procedure that transformed them.
      • Transformation: Most near-humans could be transformed into an Ersansyr with a combination of alchemical serums and custom-tailored retroviruses; the transformation itself usually occurs within an Ambertear Exowomb or the like.
      • Interspecies Relationships: Ersansyr may reproduce successfully with the various species with which they share the most genetic material, see "Genetic Samples", though it is generally advisable to consult a bioengineer or use a Paradigm Genetic Matrix.
    • Predatory Instincts: While they have the instincts of a predator, most Ersansyr find an outlet in vigorous negotiations/haggling more than actual hunts; losing one's temper is considered a sign of weakness, not strength, as is physical aggression.
    • Place in the Galaxy: Ersansyr are often found as diplomats, translators, psychiatrists, merchants, entertainers, lawyers, politicians, and the like, with many (especially former Melodie) feeling a profound sense of wanderlust. They tend to favour wet or temperate climates, finding dry worlds thoroughly unpleasant; when not in/near seas/lakes they value swimming pools and such very highly.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
When a Sith sets out to alter a species it is usually for malevolent purposes and rarely with the consent of those altered - this was not, however, the case for the Ersansyr, largely owing to their creator's eccentricity. Originating as a project seeking to allow Melodie Elders to venture beyond their aquatic homes, Vandiir's unique mindset quickly led to repeated additions until an entirely new species had been born.

Realizing that the abilities he had bestowed upon the Ersansyr, particularly their incredible aptitude for social interaction, might be rather useful for the Diplomatic Corps and others, the Sith Lord developed additional procedures to transform other species, see "Transformation". Unsurprisingly, most volunteers in this category were quite loyal, often to the point of fanaticism, but the Melodie were primarily motivated by self-interest.

While considered a resounding success by their creator, the numerous alterations made to the emergent genotype and the diversion of significant bodily resources to functions dealing with speech and airflow (Ersansyr are (in)famously capable of speaking for hours without the need for breaks) have left them particularly vulnerable to poisons, especially of the airborne variety.

Smol note that I will do my best to work with you to get this approved before the shutdown, but I can't guarantee that it will be.

It's being approved before the shutdown, with an additional note that they can be transformed from other near-human species.
Enjoy your mermaids, sir!

I had to pull this submission to the Pre-Codex because of the top piece of art. It may be a mermaid but it's very much so still the torso of a naked woman. No matter how lacking in "definition" it is still nude. The others pass as nothing can be seen; the top one does not. I've tucked away an easy place holder image in it for now until you can edit it to your liking. Just give me a tag when you're ready.

Truly, the nebulous intricacies of PG-13 remains an enduring mystery to me; removed your placeholder in favour of the three alternate pieces in the spoiler then linked to the artist in addition to the art source, per my new way of doing sources.

Nothing further has been changed, this should be good for re-Approval.
