"Would not take much? Ah, like fraternization?" Sibylla quipped just enough to be sassy, pointedly to Aurelian Veruna Aurelian Veruna , only to give him a curious look regarding the comment about giving Dominique the same execution power. Sibylla seemed to consider it for a moment before stating, "What Denon does is what Denon does. The worlds have had the ability to maintain their own sovereignty up to a degree that pertains in the Charter of Unity."

Which meant that Capital punishment was an interesting topic to consider, especially with the death penalty.

It was then that the acrid scent of sulfur that flowed around them from Montellian Serat hit her nose. It took all Sibylla could to ensure that she didn't embarrass herself, but even then, this was not the sweet flower-filled meadows of Naboo.

If this was bad enough, how would Aurelian take it? Likely by flicking out some flowery oil-scented handkerchief to hold to his nose.

However, Sibylla's smile grew wide almost immediately at the sight of Dominique.

"High Chancellor," she greeted the lilac-haired Denonite with an incline of her head before turning to the Devaronian representative.

"It is a pleasure to finally meet you. Thank you for receiving us."

For the briefest of moments, she found herself wishing this had been under different circumstances. Between the mounting crises along the Republic's borders and the endless procession of negotiations, she and Dominique had scarcely managed a conversation that was not entirely consumed by work.

That will need to be remedied, she resolved silently.

The thought lasted all of three seconds.

Her attention drifted toward Kadie Kadie . The elderly Gungan's merciless inspection of Aurelian, complete with cane pokes, corrections to his posture, and unsolicited grooming, made the corner of Sibylla's mouth twitch despite every diplomatic instinct urging composure, enough to help her avoid even focusing on the stench. She lowered her gaze for a heartbeat, disguising the faint twitch of her lips with a small clearing of her throat -- at least until the mountain of datapads showed up.

Watching Kadie dutifully begin reciting agendas, security updates, and every matter deemed utterly urgent while Dominique stood before the Devaronian delegation made Sibylla step forward towards the Gungan intern and Dominique.

"Allow me, High Chancellor," she offered, reaching for the stack before it could grow any larger. "I would be pleased to assist with these while you discuss the negotiations."

Aurelian offered Sibylla a knowing look, a quiet smirk tugging at his lips. Shiraya, she was getting far too adept with that quick wit of hers. His own influence was clearly rubbing off on her, though he felt duty-bound to correct her misunderstanding.

"No, no, no, not for Denon. For the Republic," he clarified in a smooth undertone, leaning in just close enough before the crowd swirled around them.

The brief moment vanished as Chancellor Vexx approached, surrounded by her entourage and the local Devaronian delegation. Aurelian immediately shifted into character, donning a polished, charismatic smile that projected regal warmth. The facade threatened to crack the instant Kadie materialized at his side. The abrasive old Gungan began poking him with her cane and barked orders at his posture. Seething beneath his composure, he forced his body to remain rigid, taking the jab in the chest without dropping his pleasant smile. Returning from this trip would mark her immediate transfer. Perhaps Senator Verity Stuyveris Verity Stuyveris required a noisy, peppermint-scented intern.

Relief arrived as Kadie dumped the heavy load of datapads toward his chest and Sibylla stepped in to intercept them. Seizing the opportunity, Aurelian smoothly moved away from the Gungan and fell into step alongside Chancellor Vexx and the surrounding Devaronian officials.

"Always a pleasure, Chancellor," Aurelian replied smoothly, gesturing toward the waiting delegation.

Looking past the crowd toward the central plaza where local leaders waited to commence the proceedings, he matched Dominique's stride. "Shall we?"

"Allow me, High Chancellor," she offered, reaching for the stack before it could grow any larger. "I would be pleased to assist with these while you discuss the negotiations."

A young man who could not have been more than five and twenty walked silently into view, having disembarked from his own speeder which clearly bore the markings of the Jedi. He wore robes of cream over a dark brown tunic and though he stood tall and straight backed he did so with a slight furrow to his brow, beneath which stared eyes the pallor of a summer storm. Locks of long pale gold hair danced about his face from the backwash of the dying speeder engines.

Placidly, Loren Ardemark surveyed the scene before taking in a breath and stepping forward. He nodded politely to Kadie Kadie , who seemed to be part of the staff, and fell in alongside her lurching stride and a slight, formal bow. Also in the group he easily recognized the King and the Voice, though he had yet to meet either. His cousin likely had, he would have to ask Sophelia Ardemark Sophelia Ardemark .

"Hello, I'm here as part of the protection detail. Apologies for my lateness."

"This is Senator Dib of the High Republic..."

Balun's awareness expanded beyond the immediate vicinity as he continued to deflect volleys of heated plasma, instead focusing on the source of the man shouting out to the attackers in an attempt to have them surrender arms. These raiders didn't seem convinced by Muad Dib Muad Dib 's threat, yet the presence of a Senator somewhat complicated matters for the Jedi Knight...

Relations between the Senate and the Jedi Order had been on Balun's mind lately, thanks to the Jedi personnel who had departed from Shiraya's Sanctuary and taking up the role of the Vanguard, a group of Jedi who had chosen proactive aggression rather than serve as the Order always had, respecting the authority of the Jedi Council and defending lifes rather than going out of their way to take them. Now, as Muad Dib had announced himself, despite Balun Dashiell having had no prior experience with the man, the Jedi Knight felt it a priority to keep the Senator safe from harm, however possible.

The Jedi Knight's left hand crossed to his right, detaching the Crossguard from his belt and igniting the sunfire blade. Simultaneously, his right hand extended and threw the standard model weapon out against the group of pirates firing upon the Senator, the orange blade spinning as Balun guided the weapon's arc with sustained telekinesis, bringing the lightsaber sweeping around in its trajectory and slicing through the blaster rifles and removing hands from those most unfortunate.

Balun quickly swapped the Crossguard into his right hand before his secondary lightsaber began its return, catching it with a light slap of his left palm, the blade disengaging in one fluid motion as the hilt was returned to his waist and the Jedi Knight pushed forward, quickly rushing into the fray.

Blasterfire from both Senator Dib and the Security Officers raced past Balun, the Jedi Knight listening to every tremor in the Force for guidance, ducking and side-stepping bolts of fire as he pushed against the armed pirates.

The sudden aggressive push from the Jedi potentially caught the attackers off guard as Balun came down on the first group and began to target their weapons with his lightsaber, cleaving through rifles and landing shallow strikes against their arms and legs in a bid to disarm and immobilise them.

He had ducked back down, the blaster fire chewing away at the food cart, which made it difficult to step out and follow through on his promise. Shabla Derek. This is the last time he listened to his brother. With his beskar'gam on, this would have been much simpler. Instead, there was a decent chance he was about to be shot. A lot. And that was unacceptable. He had a dinner reservation.

As he pulled his arms and legs in tight while the food cart decreased in mass, another group of pirates ran down the walkway to join the party. Normally this wouldn't have mattered. Except this time it would give the new attackers another angle of attack. And that would be the moment when he would be, well and truly, f-...

Suddenly, a lightsaber was launched through the air, the spinning blade striking several of the pirates in the extremities. Blasters dropped, the group stopped firing, and a Jedi launched himself forward as the wayward blade returned to his outstretched hand. From where he was crouched, Muad watched as the Jedi danced into their midst, letting the Force flow through and guide his movements—a symphony in motion. And the Jedi was the conductor. Every swish of the conductor's wand, his lightsaber, brought a crescendo of screams and dropped blasters, keeping the tempo of violence as a steady, persistent beat.

The new group of pirates looked between the senator crouched behind the booth and the Jedi, currently slashing limbs, dodging attacks, and deflecting crimson bolts. It was clear in their minds who the biggest threat was. But there was always the possibility the man hiding could still be a viable threat until he screamed. "Oh, my gods! I don't wanna die! And they ruined my suit; I'll never get these stains out of the fabric! Hey, Jedi man, get me out of here safely, and I'll buy your way onto the master's council! And a diverse portfolio of planetary bonds, spice profits, and scantily clad twi'leks! Save me!"

After his outburst, the new group decided. He was not a threat. Barely a target. So they did what was natural. They aimed blasters and slugthrowers at the Jedi carving his way into the pirates who were previously trying to kill the senator. A small smile stretched on Muad's face as the Jedi suddenly found himself the center of attention. It would be easy for Muad to slip away and leave the Jedi to fight this battle alone. There was no great love for the organization. But on occasion, there had been a number of his ilk Muad considered allies. And some he thought of as friends. Even a few who were family. It just didn't sit well with him. With a sigh and a grin, he shrugged his shoulders once more. Everyone loves an underdog story.

One breath in to gather all the turbulence, one breath out to expel anything unnecessary. All that remained was the Force and the madness of the situation. Innocents were dying. The terrorists assaulted everything with no care for the lives they destroyed. These pirates had already struck down families and workers alike. And at the center of the maelstrom of madness, a Jedi fought alone, trying to save as many people as possible. Even if it cost him his own life, and that was the catalyst. The spark that ignited the passionate joy that came from combat. Muad's eyes glowed bright blue as he rose from behind the dilapidated booth.

Both arms raised, extended out from his shoulders as he tracked enemy targets. A shistavanen stood on the Jedi's right, a massive blunderbuss braced against the wolf man's right hip. That particular weapon would fire two fists' worth of shrapnel right into the Jedi's torso, with his lightsaber merely melting some of the shot into molten globs. That was the reason for a slug thrower's effectiveness against a lightsaber. It wasn't a plasma bolt or laser bolt to be battered away.

This was why Muad shot the shistavanen in the face first. A second shot hit the side of the blunderbuss, shifting the massive muzzle from the Jedi to another pirate. When the shistavanen's fingers twitched in a death spasm, the other pirate's upper chest nearly vaporized, a pink mist floating in the air before them. However spectacular the view was, Muad did not hesitate to transition to new targets of opportunity. The blaster fired again, a crimson bolt hitting another pirate in the throat as the slug thrower gutshot one pirate before a carefully aimed round hit an excessively rotund male in the crotch. Muad did promise pain before death.

Behind the Jedi, a green-hued twi'lek raised a vibroax to drive into his enemy's back. There wasn't a clear shot, and without a second to waste, Muad dropped to his left knee, his right arm lying parallel along his right thigh, and his left arm braced over his right forearm. Everything slowed as he aimed down the sights of the slug thrower and felt the impressions through the Force. Balun was coming out of a spin; the blue robes swung out from his body. The only clear shot was less than preferable. But effective if connecting. In the frozen moment, half a breath slipped from pursed lips as his finger gently squeezed the trigger. The hammer fell, igniting the primer which, in turn, ignited the propellant. The slug was launched from its casing and flew down the barrel before exiting with a flash of yellow fire.

Balun moved, just another two inches, in the time it took Muad to fire. Almost no time at all. The round flew unerringly where it slipped between the Jedi's thighs, just avoiding the back of Balun's robes, and punched through the loincloth the twi'lek was wearing. The vibroax clattered to the ground while Balun continued his attack and Muad rose from his knee, blaster bolts and slugs finding new homes nestled into pirates. From seeing the twi'lek as a threat to rising after shooting the twi'lek, less than two seconds passed. It was situational awareness, training, and the Force. And while the pirates had no perspective or relationship with the Force, both Balun and Muad did. The devastation the pair wrought proved they were not merely ordinary combatants.

Maybe I can keep my dinner reservation after this … unless the restaurant is destroyed … I hate pirates …

The swim to the shoreline was uneventful, if anything, it was pleasant. The water temperature was good, it was clean, serene, and quiet. Not an unnecessary movement or sound was made. The crash of waves against the rocks and shore meant that they could swim quickly and without due regard to their noise, but the Commandos took the precaution to primarily swim under the surf and surface to prevent the noise from traveling. The Defense Force partners they had largely did the same.

The Republic Commandos donned their gear quickly- blast vests, helmets, and fatigues. Atham wore his dry-shirt under his vest. Their gear was setup to be donned quickly, bags marked with names and identifiers, and different cut ropes at the top in case they needed to do it by feel, at night. He pulled his fatigues up quickly, put on his shoes, and collected his rifle.

His helmet was comfortable, but not full-faced like the other Commandos. He preferred the breathing room, and just did plain old did not like the stuffy helmets. The Commandos and Defense Force began the ascent up the cliffs, a haughty exercise to say the least, even with climbing gear. By the time Atham got to the top, he was fatigued, much less his troops. A role call meant that every man was present, everyone accounted for.

They slunk low and close to the compound outer wall, avoiding the sweep of a security camera before pushing further inside. Their intel was good, indeed there was an access tunnel, an escape tunnel almost. It led them right into the inner courtyard after a quick and uneventful trek through it, popping out from some stairs near one of the water storage units. He was first out of the threshold, and came face to face with a nearby guard, who opened his mouth to scream.

He made no such sound when Atham plunged a knife into his lungs. Couldn't scream if you had a sucking chest wound. He made a gurgling sound, before Atham dumped him on the ground behind him, walking over him. One of the other Commandos behind him rather casually stepped over him, turned, and fired two rounds into his head. Just for good measure. They were inside the compound now, the afternoon sun on them. Afternoon raids were good. Men were alert in the mornings and typically at night, but lazy and tired in the afternoon. These guards, low-paid goons that funneled who knows what to who knew who, were no exception. Atham's team stood at the entrance, pushing a camera up with the barrel of his rifle to prevent them from being seen immediately.

Atham stacked up on the outer door, and watched as one of the Defense Force sliced into the panel nearby. It was a local design, in the local language, so they were happy to help. The door slid open, and the Commandos silently stepped inside. Their feet made no noise as they walked. The Defense Force men tried their best and were doing well at keeping quiet. It was a trick of rolling the feet, really, nothing more. They poured out into a long hallway, with doors strewn about from the entrance they were in. The compound was large, but the rooms were small.

Atham gave the order to begin the search, and the team got to work, slowly picking apart the compound, room-by-room. Sharp THWACKS of silenced rifles made Atham realize the Commandos were doing what they did best. The sound of their bodies hitting the floor typically was louder than the rifles themselves. But if they were made or alerted now, it was far too late for the security team to come back inside the compound to do anything to stop the Republic and the Defense Force from dragging Varko out into the courtyard.

Atham wondered if it would be better for relations to let the Defense Force troops shoot him in the square outside, or take him for a lengthy trial. They'd make up their own minds once they got him. For now, Atham waited, tucked against a wall, rifle at the ready on the outer cordon while his team searched this side of the compound.

High Chancellor. Such a formal introduction. Dominique didn't try to dissuade Sibylla, however, while they were in public. Appearances must be maintained and such. Should keep the general population from knowing there was any kind of connection between them, anyway.

Dominique paused with a look over at Kadie Kadie at the Gungan's greeting. A tip of the head and a lift at the corner of her mouth followed. Sibylla kindly helped manage the slew of work the 'Intern' sought to dump into their lap. If she could deal with Mandalorians, one acerbic Gungan shouldn't pose a challenge.

She smoothly turned her attention to Aurelian as the man managed to keep his composure despite Kadie's efforts. "Let's. I'm quite eager to demonstrate the Republic's commitment to the people of Devaron, and to itself. No doubt the supplies," being distributed to the people of the city, "will do little to diminish their security concerns, but it should at least show we will not be a burden." The Republic was not resource poor, and as of late they were not military or force-projecting poor either. The latter would take some convincing or demonstrations, but the Chancellor was satisfied with recent training reports and response times. She'd even had a few attendants observe such matters personally in case there were 'inaccuracies' in the official reports.

"Do you foresee any challenges in the Senate, King Veruna?" Truthfully, Dominique was always cognizant when it came to worlds with a majority that did not look human-like some parties might feel... squeamish at their incorporation. Personally, she didn't care. So long as a people could contribute more than they needed in return it was a worthwhile endeavor. Appearances could be overlooked. Cultures... could be navigated. But the Chancellor wasn't the sole decision maker when it came to welcoming another world in, and so she was curious as to Aurelian's thoughts. And both his and Sibylla's thoughts on the negotiations ahead.

“At least the girl ( Sibylla Abrantes Sibylla Abrantes ) has manners,” Kadie grumbled as she trundled after the others. A slow pace. Her knees and back weren’t what they used to be. Cane making a constant tap-tap-tap sound.

“Not even-ah-thank you,” eyes tracked the King’s back. Aurelian Veruna Aurelian Veruna A sneer on her lipsticked mouth. A harumph next as her gaze swept to the blond lad. “Back in my day early was late, boy.” Loren Ardemark Loren Ardemark

Her glare was unmistakable. Do. Better.

A short brown mousy woman came up to them as they trailed after the delegation. “Hi, I’m Di'an Sawyr with the High Republic Herald. Can I ask you a few questions for a story?”

The old Gungan’s face went from annoyed to pleased in a heartbeat.

Work continued easily as time progressed, and his muscle memory had almost completely returned as he grew accustomed to his arm once more. While without it, he had learned the value of what it meant to lose something. Even now, he felt as if he had gained an additional sense. His reactions were quicker, he was stronger, and more durable. It had increased the strength in his arm to a rather ridiculous amount, so that would certainly be useful, especially if he found himself in battle or something of that sort. But for now, he was simply happy getting the sensor arrays installed. Added security for this place would be a good thing.

"Are you excited?"

Elian looked up from his kneeling position. "Of course I am." He looked back down to the base mount of the thirteenth sensor array that was being set up. "It's going to be nice. I'm glad I decided to graduate early. I'm just happy that I hadn't completely ruined my chances with my actions. You know?"

Caleb offered a small smile. "We all make mistakes, Elian. Your parents made their share, but they owned up to them, and they are still as good, true, and noble as ever." Elian tightened the wiring, then placed the crimp on the end. He reached for the crimping tool and finished that last part. He stood up, giving Caleb a small pat on the shoulder.

"Oh, I know! It's a miracle we turned out as good as they did."

He showed a small smile before it vanished for the briefest of moments, only to return again. His thoughts drifted briefly to Cassian. He missed his brother. He just wished he were here now. He cleared his throat before looking back to Caleb with a devilish smile on his face, pushing past the small inkling of sadness that had held him for a moment.

"So, do my parents have a party planned for me?" Caleb rolled his eyes. "Elian, please..." he scoffed as he moved down the range to the next sensor array.

"Oh, come on! If anyone knows, it's going to be you!" Elian said as he scrambled to pick up the tools and move down the way.

Quick footfalls and THWACKS of suppressed weapons let Atham know the Commandos were still moving through the compound. Dry hole after dry hole- no Varko to be found. One of the Defense Force troops found the power room, and used a well-placed blaster bolt to ruin the hope of having any appliances turn on. That, and the lights. And with a building more concerned about security and a lack of windows, a lack of natural light inside was not good when you couldn't see in the dark.

But they could.

The blue-eyed demons stalked through the compound, Atham taking point on entering a room. Some people might've remarked clearing a room like that as terrifying initially, but truly the terror came later. Everything felt mechanical, analytical. Step in, clear the threshold, near, far, deep corners. He cleared two rooms like that, and on the third one of Varko's men was hiding in the corner. There was a brief amount of ambient light from the hallway, so when the doorway opened, he just blindly fired towards the door. The shot went over Atham's shoulder and into the doorframe. Atham pushed into the darkness, stood about two feet from him, and shot him in the face twice. Not Varko, a human.

Atham pushed out of the room when he got three clicks on his comms. Speaking was a luxury and a danger in these kinds of operations, so clicking your radio was about as good as talking. Three clicks. Objective found. Atham stepped out into the hallway, turning his head towards two Defense Force troops and one of his Commandos following behind. Varko was bloodied and being dragged by his arms in the hallway. He wasn't able to talk much now. The Defense troops looked up at Atham, who gave them a nod.

"Good work, lads."

The Republic troops led them outside, Varko grunting in pain at both being dragged and by the strong burst of sunlight. They did as Atham imagined, laying him in the middle of the courtyard. The Defense Force troops, who, this man had probably inadvertently killed dozens upon dozens of their countrymen, laid waste to the idea of peace and security, and aided and supplied a many great bad men.... came to the same conclusion that Atham drew earlier. His troops lifted up their night vision and took off their helmets. The Commandos looked across at each other, before Atham walked back into the compound. He only stayed there for just a moment, reaching to his ankle. A holdout blaster, not sanctioned of course. Not Republic issue. Rather... criminal, even.

He walked back outside, handing his rifle off to one of his Commandos, before standing over Varko. He grabbed Varko's hand, who was gurgling, pleading with the Republic troops as well as the Defense Force troops. Gloved, practiced hands wrapped the holdout blaster in Varko's hand, tightening the grip, while one of the Defense Force troops began to understand. There were no cameras. No recordings. No one else but Varko and the people he damned, and the Republic Commandos who were all too happy to bend the rules.

"Varko Sorn. May the Force be kinder to you in death than you were to the living in life." Atham said, releasing Varko, who was confusingly holding onto the holdout blaster. The Defense Force leader of their fireteam picked up his rifle, and Varko, sat on his knees, got the same treatment he dished out in life. Ruthless execution of a task. Varko's last visage was hateful eyes staring down at him while he sat on his knees and held onto a particularly useless gun. He died afraid, alone, knowing his entire life's operation came crumbling down. Perhaps he felt some sort of remorse, or was pleading for forgiveness to his Gods. But Atham didn't listen, and neither did any of his men.

The Defense Force troops gave the Commandos a nod. Atham heard the rumblings of landships and speeders in the distance. Other local forces were coming to secure the compound. The leader of the Defense Forces, a handsome Devaronian, held out his hand for Atham to shake. Atham grasped his newfound brother's-in-arms hand and shook it warmly.

"For the Republic, hm?"

Sibylla caught the change in Kadie's expression immediately. It was the sort of delight that sent a tingle of alarm within the Voice of Naboo, especially at the sudden glint in the older Gungan's eyes at the appearance of a reporter that was enough to set every political instinct Sibylla possessed quietly ringing.

Kadie struck her as the sort of woman who spoke directly from the chest, with neither hesitation nor much concern for whatever diplomatic wreckage might follow. Ordinarily, Sibylla might have found the quality refreshing, especially when dealing with Aurelian and his maddening ways.

But in front of the High Republic Herald, however...

"Should the Herald have any questions, I have the time to answer a few," Sibylla interjected smoothly, her intricate bronze and violet dress giving a silent whisper as she slipped into the conversation before Kadie could gather too much momentum, offering the folders back to the older Gungan with a brief, encouraging smile before turning her attention toward the reporter.

"How may I assist?" she asked, aware she was likely setting herself up for pointed political questions.

It was precisely then that Sibylla glanced ahead and noticed Aurelian continuing merrily onward with Dominique. Oh blast...he had done it again. Somehow, the King of Naboo had escaped the reporter, the datapads, and Kadie in one elegant maneuver to join Dominique, leaving Sibylla to manage all three!

Oh there were going to be consequences later!

The Jedi Knight had lept from the ground and thrown his body into a butterfly-twist, a sideways spinning somersault turning his legs and whipping his sword-hand around for momentum, the blur of his lightsaber creating an arc of sunfire around him in mid-air. It was an evasive maneuver made in an attempt to avoid being struck by blasterfire from the pirates, even deflecting one of the incoming bolts back against the assailants before it struck him in the side.

The sharp whistle of wind shot past him, a brief sensation of heat bringing warmth to his inner thighs. The Force surged around Balun, the perception of time felt as though it had slowed, and despite this, the timing of the blaster bolt fired by Muad Dib Muad Dib still surprised the Jedi, landing on both feet and sparing the Senator the briefest of looks before ducking below the coming swing of a pirate's vibro-axe. The senator's blasterfire had been far too close for comfort, and the accuracy was almost scary, especially from a Non-Force User. Nonetheless, Balun had arrived within the centre of a trio of pirates, and they had turned on him, drawing melee weapons to seek to combat the Jedi. There wasn't time to cuss his alarm at the Senator.

The weight and width of the Crossguard Lightsaber found home in close-quarters fighting, although Balun hadn't come wearing his armor, he moved swiftly and fluidly, Jedi Robes light and agile, maximing his need for manueverability as he weaved between two of the attackers, catching the vibro-axe within the crossguard of the lightsaber itself and driving the pirates weapon hand high before ducking beneath, turning on the ball of his left foot and stepping under and out behind him, dragging the blade through the mans midsection. A killing blow that would see the pirate slump to the ground behind Balun, though not before the Jedi had already moved to parry the vibro-blade of another.

The invaders were ruthless in their attacks, their skill with the weapons savage and undisciplined. Balun Dashiell could feel their emotions writing beneath their skin, anger and intent, little in the way of sympathy for the innocents who were caught in their crossfire. These pirates were here to do as much damage as possible, and it seemed that it mattered little as to who fell before their ferocity. Violence for the sake of violence, that's what it felt like in the moment.

Balun's lightsaber blocked high; the pirate's blade came down towards his head, stopped in its tracks and traded for a strong kick to the stomach, sending the pirate falling back to his hindquarters. Another came at Balun, and this time, the Jedi angled his lightsaber not for the weapon but instead, slicing through the wrists as the pirate lunged at him with a heavy mace-like club. Balun stepped away, his hands bringing the lightsaber slashing high now, catching the pirate off guard and forcing the weapon to drop as they screamed in agony. He felt no joy in their suffering, but were they not halted in their tracks, others could have fallen victim to their lack of empathy.

Between the Jedi and the Senator, the pirates' numbers were thinned greatly until only a handful remained. A large human charged Muad, a vibrosword in one hand and a knife in the other. He closed the distance as he ran forward. Both pistols were aimed at the pirate, and both triggers were squeezed impotently as both weapons clicked empty. With a smirk, Muad reared back and threw the blaster pistol directly at the human's head, where it smashed the man's nose and sent teeth flying.

Taking the momentary reprieve, the senator flipped the cylinder of the revolver open; spent casings dropped to the floor with a jingling of empty shells. One of the speed reloaders was inserted, and he flicked the cylinder back into the frame of the revolver with a click. The pirate's mouth gaped open, front teeth missing, as Muad pulled the trigger, sending a round right through the gap and out the back of his head.

Several bolts flew too close for comfort, and Muad ducked while diving forward, his empty hand pulling one of the power packs from his pocket. He hit the ground on his side and slid across the floor as he tossed the discarded rifle's power cell between two of the pirates.

A single shot rang out, the slug smashing the power pack in the center, breaking the energy field and causing an explosion that sent shrapnel into the pair.

Muad rolled across the ground, his right hand retrieving a fallen vibrosword, before he popped up near another pirate. Their swords clashed, and Muad shoved the attacking blade out and away from both their bodies as he pressed the barrel of the slug thrower against the pirate's chest and squeezed the trigger. The impact launched the dead man backward in a heap. He slipped the pistol back to the small of his back, the searing barrel of the revolver sending a wave of heat through his pants. A momentary inconvenience.

His attention turned to the Jedi who battled with three attackers, lightsaber against melee weapons. A fourth pirate ran to assist his brethren, but Muad moved to intercept her.

The senator stood with his back to the Jedi as the final pirate from the group pulled two swords and held them menacingly. Muad merely grinned before raising his own blade in front of his face in a mock salute. "You can still surrender …" Apparently, the idea infuriated the woman, who leaped forward, thin blades flashing out almost faster than the eyes could see. His sword moved, parrying the first strike as he hopped back out of range of the other sword's thrust. Not content with two strikes, the female pirate pressed forward in an attempt to take advantage of his retreat.

Where she saw weakness in his retreat, he allowed the misjudgment to grow, along with her confidence. Two more strikes flashed out, and his blade ricochetted from one block to another, allowing the momentum of their clashing swords to bounce his blade into the next block.

She pressed her perceived advantage with two sweeping horizontal slashes coming in from either side simultaneously. The heel of his boot caught on one of the bodies splayed along the ground, and he allowed himself to fall back, avoiding the deadly swords. His back hit the ground as he forced his body to continue rolling, legs swinging up over his head until completing the tumble and landing in a crouch. Her right hand thrust forward with the tip of her sword aimed at his chest. Her body extended in a fencer's form as the blade flew unerringly toward his heart. Her body was low, right leg leading and bent at the knee while her left leg extended straight behind her. It was a good maneuver. And if he had still been recovering from his tumble, it would have worked.

But he wasn't. His body had shifted to the left, his form blading to narrow his profile. The sword in his hand swept to the outside of her own, and ran down the length of her blade until it cut through the fingers where they gripped the hilt. Sword and severed digits flew through the air as she grimaced, a silent scream held in only through her own fortitude. "Tsk tsk. No basket or guard to protect the hand. Poor choice of weaponry." As he spoke, he raised his own sword, showcasing the basket protecting his own hand inside the intricately wrought design. Another smirk crossed his lips. "You've lost the use of a hand. No need to lose your life." His words had the opposite effect as she screamed and drove forward once more.

Fierfek, she was fast. Their blades danced against one another as each sought to exploit an opening that neither was willing to give. As she pressed, Muad finally decided the woman was classically trained. Which meant when his blade slashed in an overhead strike, and she raised her sword to block, her legs were open in a wide stance to maintain balance and speed. Muad did what he always did. Anything necessary to win. He cheated.

The top of his boot lashed out and struck the outside of her knee, shattering the joint through the sheer ferocity of the blow. She staggered back, one leg completely useless as she tried to maintain a semblance of balance. Unfortunately for her, the same corpse that tripped him moments earlier caught her foot, and she slammed to the ground, her remaining sword skittering across the ground. She glared, her panting breath escaping as eyes stared unrepentantly.

"Just do it. Get it over with." She leaned up from the floor, neck extended as she closed her eyes. "As you wish." He pulled his arm back before he slashed the sword through the air toward her head. The last thing the woman saw was the twist of his wrist before the world went black. At the last second, Muad had twisted his wrist so that the flat of the sword swatted her across the temple. Her unconscious form flopped to the ground. His eyes spied a pack of death sticks half escaping the pocket of her vest. So he bent and took one. "Don't mind if I do."

He turned just as the Jedi slashed his lightsaber through the offending pirate's wrists. The pirate who had been kicked by the Jedi was beginning to rise, before Muad slammed the basket hilt of his borrowed sword into the man's head. Muad grinned, blue eyes glowing as he nodded to the Jedi as he placed the death stick between his lips. His empty hand raised in front of his face and his fingers snapped, bringing a small blue flame to life to light the end of the death stick. The flickering flame was extinguished as Muad breathed in deep before sighing and releasing a cloud of blue-white smoke.

His eyes glanced over the Jedi, seeing no wounds, before looking the other man in the face. Then he reached out a hand.
"Muad Dib. Good to see that not all Jedi are peacefully apathetic." The voice was filled with teasing humor while his smile defanged the words he used. "A pleasure." Most of the attackers in this sector were down and out of the fight. That didn't mean there wasn't more to do elsewhere in the port. And until all of the pirates were either killed, taken into custody, or rebuffed, Muad figured it was still going to be a long day.

JARIN VALE
JEDI KNIGHT

"The first step is forward."

Jarin had been a Jedi Knight for eleven days, and he was reasonably certain he would stop counting eventually. For now, every time someone addressed him as Knight Vale, some small part of his mind still expected another person to answer. That happened again when a Devaronian dockworker called his name from several meters away, and Jarin looked up from the supply crate in his hands before remembering that, yes, apparently that was him now.

"Medical shipments are supposed to be going through customs first," the dockworker said, pointing toward the opposite side of the loading area.

Jarin looked down at the crate. A blue symbol on its side very clearly identified it as medical equipment. "Right. Of course they are." He adjusted his grip while the dockworker gave him a sympathetic smile and started toward the indicated checkpoint. He had been assigned to the Transit Centre as part of the Republic presence on Devaron, though he suspected his actual responsibilities involved security, keeping an eye on the shipments, and being visible enough that anyone considering causing trouble might reconsider. Instead, he had spent most of the last half hour moving boxes. There were workers everywhere, many of whom had clearly been at it since well before Jarin arrived, and standing around in clean robes while they carried Republic supplies from one side of the terminal to the other had started to feel ridiculous after about five minutes.

His Master would probably have said something about allowing people to perform the duties assigned to them. Jarin smiled faintly at the thought as he set the crate beside several others and rolled one shoulder beneath his robes. His Master had said a great many things over the years, usually immediately before Jarin did something that technically proved the point while somehow convincing himself otherwise.

He had just started back toward the loading area when something changed overhead. Jarin stopped without knowing exactly what had caught his attention. It might have been the Force. It might simply have been the sound of the engines outside. Whatever it was, some instinct made him look toward the broad transparisteel overlooking the approaches to the Transit Centre just before the freighter exploded.

The flash came first, bright enough that several people near the windows recoiled from it, and then the sound reached the building hard enough to vibrate through the floor beneath Jarin's boots. Someone behind him dropped a container. Voices rose throughout the loading area as burning sections of the freighter separated from the wreckage and began tumbling toward the city below. Jarin stared for perhaps half a second before blasterfire erupted somewhere deeper inside the terminal, followed almost immediately by alarms and the confused movement of hundreds of people trying to decide whether they should run and, if so, where.

His hand went instinctively toward the lightsaber on his belt. Then another explosion sounded to his left and a woman screamed. Jarin stopped himself before his fingers reached the weapon and turned toward the scream instead. Whoever was firing could wait a few seconds. Someone nearby could not.

A blast had torn through part of the upper walkway overlooking the loading level, collapsing sections of ceiling and scattering broken panels and twisted framing across the floor. Several civilians had become trapped between the wreckage and one of the terminal walls, while part of the damaged structure above them sagged badly enough that Jarin could see it beginning to shift before he reached them. A support beam gave way as he approached. He threw both hands upward and caught the collapsing section through the Force, stopping it several meters above the people beneath it.

The effort drove his boots backward across the floor before he found his footing. Jarin clenched his jaw and steadied himself, feeling the weight of the beam and everything resting against it pulling in half a dozen different directions. Throwing something was easy. Holding several tons of damaged structure in exactly the right place while pieces continued shifting against one another was considerably less so.

"All right, everybody out," Jarin said, forcing his voice to remain calm despite the strain already spreading through his shoulders. Nobody moved at first. There were six of them, perhaps seven. One man had blood running down the side of his face, an older woman was trying to help another person stand, and a boy near the wall was staring upward at the wreckage suspended over his head. Jarin widened his stance and tried again. "Listen to me. I've got it. You've got time, but I need you to move now. Help each other and come straight toward me. Don't worry about anything except getting clear."

The older woman reacted first. She pulled the injured man beneath one arm and started toward Jarin, and once someone moved the others seemed to remember that they could. They began filing beneath the wreckage in awkward groups, supporting one another where they could. The boy remained where he was.

Jarin looked directly at him. "Hey. Don't look up. Look at me."

Another impact somewhere in the terminal shook the structure and Jarin felt part of the weight shift against his grip. The boy flinched and looked ready to retreat farther toward the wall.

"You're all right," Jarin told him. He wasn't certain whether that was completely true, but he made himself sound certain. "I know it doesn't feel like it right now, but you're all right. Come toward me. You don't need to run. Just walk."

The boy took one hesitant step and then another. Jarin kept talking to him until he crossed beneath the beam and the older woman caught him by the arm. Only after the last civilian was several meters away did Jarin change his grip on the wreckage and shove outward with both hands. The damaged structure collapsed away from them with a violent crash that sent dust rolling across the floor.

Jarin bent forward with his hands briefly resting against his knees. He had barely managed one full breath when a blaster bolt struck the wall beside him and showered the floor with fragments. He straightened and saw three armed figures emerging through the dust at the far end of the concourse. The first fired again, and Jarin's lightsaber reached his hand before he consciously decided to draw it. Blue light snapped into existence between them and caught the incoming shot.

The second bolt came lower. Jarin turned the blade, redirected it harmlessly away from the civilians behind him, and immediately began moving forward. He had been taught throughout his life that the lightsaber was a defensive weapon, and he believed that without reservation. What he had never entirely understood was the assumption that defense required a Jedi to stay where he was. The civilians were behind him. The pirates were ahead. Every meter Jarin moved toward the attackers became another meter between those attackers and the people he was trying to protect. To him, that seemed perfectly consistent with everything he had been taught.

A burst of fire came toward him. Jarin caught the first shot high, shifted around the second, and redirected the third into the weapon of the pirate on the left. The blaster burst apart in the man's hands, forcing him backward. Jarin used the opening to close the remaining distance before the others could settle into a firing rhythm. The center attacker swung his rifle like a club. Jarin slipped underneath it, drove his shoulder hard into the man's chest, and sent him sprawling across the floor. The next pirate tried to bring his blaster around at close range, but Jarin caught his wrist with his free hand, twisted the weapon away, and struck him across the jaw with the pommel of his saber.

The third man recovered enough to reach for a sidearm. Jarin felt the movement before he fully saw it and snapped his left hand outward. The pistol tore free of the man's grip and disappeared across the concourse. Jarin held his saber between them and watched the pirate glance from the weapon to him.

"Don't," Jarin said. His voice was quieter now, and there was no humor in it. "You've already lost. Don't make somebody die because you haven't realized it yet."

The pirate hesitated before slowly raising both hands. Jarin watched him for another moment, then deactivated his lightsaber and turned toward the civilians behind him. His breathing had quickened and sweat had started to collect beneath the collar of his robes, but the physical exertion bothered him considerably less than what he could feel through the Force. Fear spread through the Transit Centre in overlapping waves. There were flashes of pain, anger, desperation, and occasionally the sudden absence that came when a presence disappeared entirely. He hated that feeling. No amount of Jedi training had ever made it feel normal.

"Security should be moving people toward the western exits," he told the civilians. "Stay together and listen to them if the evacuation route changes. They know this building better than I do. There are medics farther back, so anyone who's hurt needs to go with them."

The older woman looked past him at the pirates on the floor before returning her attention to Jarin. "You're leaving?"

Jarin glanced toward the sound of blasterfire deeper inside the terminal. "There are more people in there."

He knew it wasn't really an answer, but she seemed to understand what he meant. Jarin started moving before anyone could argue with him.

He passed through two adjoining concourses while following the sound of sporadic weapons fire and the pressure of frightened minds through the Force. Along the way he found two security officers dragging an injured colleague behind a barricade and stopped long enough to help get the man under cover. A medic arrived moments later, and once Jarin was certain they no longer needed him, he continued deeper into the Transit Centre.

By the time he reached the next large section of the terminal, the fighting had become scattered. Bodies lay among broken furniture and abandoned luggage, most of them pirates but not all. Blaster burns marked the walls, and the air smelled of smoke, scorched metal and something Jarin preferred not to identify. He slowed as he entered, taking in the situation before moving farther.

Another Jedi stood among the aftermath, an orange lightsaber nearby. Not far from him was a man who looked considerably less like a senator than Jarin had ever imagined a senator should look. The smell of a death stick reached him as he approached, followed shortly afterward by enough of the conversation to hear the man comment that it was good to see not all Jedi were peacefully apathetic.

"Careful, Senator. Some of us are sensitive about that."

Jarin continued toward them, stepping around a discarded rifle as he did. There was the beginning of a smile on his face despite the sweat along his brow and the exhaustion slowly settling into his arms. He gave the other Jedi an acknowledging nod before looking back toward the senator.

"Not particularly sensitive, in my case, but presumably some of us."

He stopped a comfortable distance from the two men and clipped his lightsaber back onto his belt. "Jarin Vale." His attention shifted toward the deeper sections of the terminal, where distant blasterfire continued in uneven bursts. The humor in his expression faded slightly as he listened. Through the Force, fear still pressed at the edges of his awareness from somewhere farther inside.

Jarin glanced around at the wreckage surrounding them. Whatever had happened in this section appeared largely finished, and judging by the number of pirates scattered across the floor, neither of the men standing before him had spent the attack hiding behind anything.

"I suppose that settles the apathy question for the three of us, at least."

The smile returned for a moment before Jarin nodded toward the distant sound of weapons fire.

"If you're both still able to move, I'd rather make sure everyone gets out. We can philosophize about the Jedi when nobody's trying to kill us."

A glance back over his shoulder confirmed that Sibylla was currently handling both the reporter and Kadie, a realization that brought a faint, thoroughly amused smirk to Aurelian's face. She had practically stepped in front of a thermal detonator for him, taking the brunt of the administrative crossfire. Technically, shielding the monarch fell right into her official duties as the Voice, though he knew with absolute certainty he would pay for his escape later tonight.

Refocusing his attention on Dominique as they walked, his tone shifted to a more pragmatic register. "The Senate will be a battlefield over this," Aurelian admitted quietly, keeping his gaze on the bustling Devaronian delegation ahead. "The economic integration and humanitarian aid are easy sells. But the optics of their justice system will turn stomachs. Capital punishment by local predators is going to make several hypocritical senators choke on their evening wine."

Glancing toward the Chancellor, the dangerous, charming glint returned to his eyes. He leaned in slightly, lowering his voice so only she could catch the words over the ambient noise of the plaza. "Though you must admit, Chancellor, wouldn't it be quite the power to wield? Think of the efficiency."

Aurelian straightened up, his smirk softening into something far more diplomatic as they approached the formal meeting steps. "Compromise is the only way forward. We will need to construct a solid framework here if they truly intend to sign the Charter."

Dominique side-eyed Aurelian Veruna Aurelian Veruna as they moved forward. The King was obviously pleased as peaches to escape the reporter. Not that most could tell, but a small, genuine smirk was quite loud for him. It was telling when it was genuine that most had trouble with. And while it came at Sibylla Abrantes Sibylla Abrantes 's expense, she trusted the two of them found some form of amusement in such circumstances. At least, she had never complained even privately of the matter.

At the foot of the stairs, Dominique came to a stop and reached out to lightly touch Aurelian's upper arm so he knew she'd stopped. "You know where I'm from. You know what it's like. Not the tireless PR media churned out to drown out other voices. So, let's dispense with the idea I can't begin to imagine what you mean." The Chancellor smirked in turn. Aurelian was no stranger to Denon, and even her own record was far from spotless when it came to tending to matters prior to her time as Chancellor.

"But as a certain Senator keeps reminding me: there are term limits." There was a pause for Aurelian to take in that sentiment before she moved on. She knew he was aware of it -- unless he intended for her to become the Dictator herself. That wasn't the problem. It was recognizing the foundation for why they had to be careful despite what was so obvious. "There are certain matters that need dealt with swiftly, however. Decisively. Certain matters." When they were certain of the truth and the necessity. "I'm well aware some believe the Republic to be too light on certain criminals. They are, of course, wrong, but only because I refuse to trample on the rights of entire worlds to do what another group considers 'right.' So, if you believe the People would be receptive to exploring something more... definitive..." If Aurelian believed it was necessary rather than merely amusing, Dominique could explore the matter with other Senators and see where things would fall.

Dominique turned forward and looked up the steps. "I hope they've put as much thought into the matter as we have. I would hate to have people wavering banners later about freeing the innocent or some such."

"...an if you ask me about colonization and land dispossession I would say look no further than the Gungans on Naboo. I say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree for Colonialism and...," she was cut off as the Voice intervened. Kadie chuffled lowly in her throat and shook out her head, lips doing what most would call a very attractive Gungan sputter.

The intern took the datapads dilligently while muttering about the soreness of her back.

Unlike where Aurelian Veruna Aurelian Veruna was concerned, Kadie showed the Voice an ounce more respect.

The reporter looked equally as disappointed. Seemed the lass had been getting some rather good quotes from the elder Gungan. She turned her attention to the Voice, holding out the holo-recorder.

"Thank you, ma'am," the kid dipped her head in respect to the Voice. But the title didn't stop her from doing her job and asking the questions her bosses wanted her to ask.

"You describe this mission as one of partnership rather than intervention. What guarantees can you give Devaron's government that the Republic isn't simply expanding its influence under the guise of humanitarian aid?"

Oh my word.

The fact that Kadie was going on about colonization and land disposition regarding the Gungans was internally straining the cordial diplomatic smile was doing her best to keep firmly fixed upon her face, although Sibylla made a mental note that perhaps Kadie and unattended members of the press should never be allowed within conversational distance of one another again.

Thankfully, the reporter's next question offered a considerably safer route to discuss.

"The simplest guarantee is that Devaron remains sovereign," Sibylla replied with a cordial smile, doing her best to remain professional. "Humanitarian assistance is not conditional upon membership, nor does accepting Republic aid surrender Devaron's right to determine its own future. We are here because the Crimson Tide Pirate Alliance represents a threat that extends beyond any single system."

Was that a tiny little Gungan sputter beside her? Sibylla's smile tightened imperceptibly.

"Partnership requires consent as much as transparency," she continued, casting Kadie the briefest sidelong glance before returning her attention to the recorder. "If Devaron ultimately decides that closer relations with the Republic are not in its interests, then that decision remains theirs."

There, that should work.

"Yet what reassurances could the Republic give, considering the growing unrest regarding the expansion of the Blackwall along Republic borders?"

Oh, blast.

The mental curse swept swiftly in her mind even as Sibylla's expression remained pleasantly composed. Of course the reporter had gone directly for the Blackwall. Beside her, Kadie suddenly seemed far too interested in what Sibylla might say next.

"I would be doing Devaron a disservice if I offered absolute reassurances when circumstances along our borders remain uncertain," Sibylla replied. "The expansion of the Blackwall concerns us greatly. There are systems beyond it we have lost contact with, and reports from those who have escaped give us every reason to take that threat seriously."

Sibylla gave a slight pause, and while she was choosing her next words carefully, she thought back on everything that had brought them to this.

"But that uncertainty is precisely why cooperation between neighboring systems matters. The Republic cannot promise that danger will never reach Devaron. What we can promise is that Devaron would not face that danger alone, and that any partnership would be built upon mutual defense, open communication, and respect for its sovereignty...I believe reassurance built upon promises no government can guarantee is worth considerably less than honesty about what we can do together."
