OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION

SETTING INFORMATION
  • Astronomical Location Name: The Abyssal Maw, Sith-Imperial Superradiant Energy Collection Facility: Designation -
    Z8hhdSF.png
  • Classification: Rotating Black Hole
  • Location: AJ, 17
  • Rotational Period: N/A
  • Orbital Period: N/A
  • Size: Small
  • Affiliation: The Sith Empire
  • Population: Sparsely Populated
  • Demographics: Only roughly 20% of the station's population is comprised of organic scientists and their security detail, with the remaining ~80% being the various construction, maintenance, service, and battle droids utilized for the majority of zero vacuum work around the station.
  • Accessibility: The Abyssal Maw is completely closed off to any unauthorized access, and access can only be granted by the highest levels of authority within the Empire.
  • Description: The Abyssal Maw is a relatively small rotating Black Hole (roughly five-point-eight kilometers in diameter) located far away from most of Imperial civilization, isolated in a pocket of untraversed space. Though thought insignificant, the scientific architects of the Sith Empire saw great potential in harnessing the energy produced by the black hole's angular momentum.

First, they built a mirrored hexecontahedron structure around the black hole itself, with each mirrored surface only being several centimeters thick. Then a secondary structure, based off of the concept of an Alderson Disk, was constructed around both the mirrored structure and the black hole within. This secondary structure was roughly thirteen kilometers in diameter.

The scientists then attached large energy collection dishes around the interior perimeter of the disk and fired electromagnetic waves through opened portions of the mirrored hexecontahedron. The waves would then hit the black hole at light speed, a small proportion of the waves falls past the event horizon to disappear forever. But a much larger amount would slosh through the ergosphere around the black hole, where it would force some of its rotational energy on the waves and amplifies them. At that point, the waves would begin to undergo a process called superradiant scattering, by which the waves continue to bounce inside of the mirrored structure, gaining ever more powerful with each rebound until the wave's growth became exponential and potentially unstable.

By re-opening some of the mirrored panels, this expounded energy could be harnessed by the energy collection dishes that had been constructed on the orbiting disk. This energy could then be stored and shipped away to other areas of the Empire.
POINTS OF INTEREST
  • Collection Facility: A circular ring thirteen kilometers in diameter, the Collection Facility is lined with various concave dished designed to absorb the magnified electromagnetic waves released from the interior of the mirrored hexecontahedron structure surrounding the black hole. The experimental energy is then safely contained and siphoned off into secure containers for eventual distribution to wherever the Empire demands.
  • Research Station: The Empire has established a research station situated several kilometers away from the Collection Facility, primarily to study the effects of the black hole and the energy it produces from a safe distance. The scientists and their protectors live their entire lives on the station, with food and resources being delivered to them from the wider Empire.
SECURITY
  • Rating: Low
The facility is protected by several armed guards, at most fifty or so, but generally the Empire never saw a need to reinforce the facility.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

The Empire of the Sith is constantly seeking more efficient methods to power its vast territory and fuel its massive war machine, whether that be scouring the cosmos for mineral-rich asteroid belts or experimenting with new methods of energy collection. One of its more eccentric experiments involves a rotating black hole discovered far outside the local hyperspace lanes that crisscrossed the territory around it.

Emperor Carnifex dispatched several of his most intelligent scientists to the site, where they formulated the creation of a massive collection array to harness the energy of the black hole to serve the Empire's needs.

After several failed attempts and many lost lives, they finally calculated the safe distance required to build around the black hole without being too far away to render any experiment inconsequential. By firing electromagnetic waves through an opening in a mirrored hexecontahedron, the scientists discovered that the energy expounded upon itself by bouncing off of the interior mirrored surfaces and when released could be harnessed as a useable form of energy.

Though the only site within the Empire that produced energy in such a manner, it was an obvious success. Pleased, the Emperor required that they continue studying the black hole and its properties for possible wider use across the Empire.
