PHYSICAL //
Kest is tall and lean, carrying the athletic build of a man accustomed more to cockpits and endurance than heavy physical training. He has short sandy-blond to light brown hair, pale blue-grey eyes, light stubble and an otherwise unremarkable Human appearance. His features tend toward stillness even under pressure, with much of his expression carried through his eyes rather than obvious movement.

Extensive burn scarring covers one side of his torso, continuing over the hip and down the thigh. The damage is old and fully healed, though impossible to mistake at close quarters.

None of Kest's recorded professional racing seasons include a crash serious enough to explain it.

PERSONALITY + BELIEFS //
Quiet and outwardly controlled, Tanner rarely advertises what he is feeling. Anger sits much closer to the surface than his manner suggests. When that restraint finally breaks, the change can be abrupt and violently disproportionate.

His hatred of the Sith is absolute. Kest does not want accommodation, reform or containment. He wants the Sith Order destroyed and its power reduced to the same kind of ruin left behind in his own life.

That willingness does not extend to spending other people's lives for his revenge. He will accept risks for himself that he would never knowingly impose upon his squadron. When he decides a job has become something he is unlikely to return from, his instinct is to order everyone else clear and continue alone.
STRENGTHS //
ACE PILOT
A five-time galactic racing champion before joining the rebellion, Tanner is exceptional behind the controls of almost anything built for speed. His spatial awareness, reactions and feel for momentum translate naturally into starfighter combat. He is particularly dangerous in pursuit, close terrain and situations where committing to the wrong line means there is no second attempt.

HARD TO SHAKE
Tanner does not relent easily. Once he decides something has to be done, pain, fatigue, fear and worsening odds tend to become problems to work through rather than reasons to stop. That persistence made him a champion long before it made him useful to Wraith Squadron.

IMPROVISED VIOLENCE
Tanner is frighteningly effective when a fight becomes ugly. He does not rely on formal martial discipline. He uses fists, elbows, walls, tools, furniture and whatever else happens to be within reach, applying overwhelming aggression until the other person can no longer continue.

ICE OVER FIRE
Whatever is happening underneath, Tanner usually presents a remarkably calm exterior. Pressure tends to narrow his focus rather than scatter it, allowing him to function clearly in situations where panic would get people killed.
WEAKNESSES //
SELF-DESTRUCTIVE
Tanner places dangerously little value on his own survival. He will not casually spend the lives of people under his command, but he will accept risks for himself that a healthier person would recognise as unacceptable.

THE SITH
The Sith are not simply an enemy to Tanner. They are personal. Opportunities to hurt them can override otherwise sound judgement, and his idea of victory extends far beyond completing the immediate mission.

NO BRAKES
Once Tanner's restraint breaks, there is very little discipline behind the violence. He does not fight to score points or establish control. He fights until the threat stops moving. That makes him dangerous, but it also makes escalation, tunnel vision and unnecessary injury very real risks.

NOTHING AFTER
Tanner has built his present life around destroying the people responsible for taking his old one. He has very little conception of what remains for him if that purpose ever disappears, and almost none of his long-term decisions are made with a future version of himself in mind.

HISTORY //
Five-time galactic racing champion Tanner Kest was once known for refusing to give ground. He took lines other drivers abandoned, committed to risks after safer men had already backed away and, more often than not, possessed the skill to make them work.

There are plenty of recordings from those years. Interviews are harder to find.

His place of birth is uncertain. So is much of what happened between his final season and his appearance among the rebels. What is known is that the Sith destroyed the community he called home. His wife, Na'eesa, and their nine-year-old daughter Janni died with it.

Kest survived.

That seems to be the part he has the least interest in discussing.

Burn scarring runs down one side of his torso, across his hip and into his thigh. Some assume racing put it there. His professional record lists no crashes. Others have offered explanations of their own. Kest has confirmed none of them.

Whatever happened afterward, the racer eventually resurfaced behind the controls of a starfighter. Wraith Squadron made use of what remained. The instincts were familiar: commit, hold the line, find the opening and keep going after somebody sensible would have stopped.

Those serving under Wraith One generally describe him as calm.

Those who have seen him lose that calm tend to describe something else.

There are stories about operations where Kest ordered everyone else out before continuing alone. Stories about Sith positions he had no reasonable chance of returning from. Stories about rooms afterward.

How much of it is true depends on who is talking.

Kest isn't.
