Connel was standing in the middle of the training room of the Enterprise. He wanted to get away from the Hidden Alliance Base for this, and this type of training is the perfect excuse. This type of training was for his Padawan Cartri. The kid was a WIZ when it came to technology, slicing, programming, you name it. He was half “Gabriel”s age and was teaching the Omega Squad tech a few tricks, quite the compliment considering “Gabe” knew.

That being said, up to this point he needed a cover man, if he was going to do their line of work, and in Connel’s opinion, he was more than worthy, Cartri needed to be able to use a lightsaber.

So it was time to pull out some of “Father’s” old training of his. So he stood here, flourishing “Conservator”, and waiting for the Darkwire to stroll in.

Throughout his time in Darkwire, Cartri had only ever relied on his fists or blasters to get out of trouble. But now that he was a Jedi, things were different. He was expected to master a new kind of weapon, one that would relegate his old tools to the sidelines.

That weapon was the big, glowing sword of doom, otherwise known as a lightsaber.

As far as Cartri was concerned, it was one of the most powerful weapons imaginable. But in the wrong hands, or in untrained ones, it was just as likely to bring ruin to its wielder as to their enemies.

At least it came in different colors. If there happened to be an orange one, he'd be first in line to claim it.

Stepping into the training area, Cartri made his way forward and offered a respectful nod to his instructor. "Afternoon, Master. Hope I didn't keep you waiting," he said with a faint grin. "You know how long it takes to get my hair in order…"

Always the silly sarcasm.

It was something that frankly, Connel would probably miss if it were gone.

Now you see why I normally wear a mask… helmet head is easier to manage than you think. Looking away for a moment, he yelled out. DROIDS!

Several training droids marched out, all carrying wooden bokken style training weapons. Now, you’re a “blaster” sort of guy, and that’s fine, but I won’t feel comfortable until you have and wield something best suited to you. Which is why I have several different types of weapons(all meant only for training), all weighted to your physical strength for you to try. Shotos, Shorts(sabers), one hand, two handle, dual…

The droids, on my command will come at you until you start to fight them back. It won’t hurt, but they’ll keep coming to help you find what you are comfortable with.

"Ha, very funny..." he said with a brief grin, his eyes flicking toward the droids that had appeared at the fellow Jedi's command. Each one held a wooden bokken training sword, harmless enough, though capable of leaving a mark depending on the strength of the blow.

He approached them, studying their design as Connel explained the various training weapons arranged behind him.

"So," Cartri asked, glancing back at his master with a smirk, "how fast do these rust buckets strike? Or do I get to find out after I pick my weapon?" He chuckled softly, giving a playful tap to the shin of the droid he was inspecting.

As he moved down the line, his attention settled on a one-handed sword. It felt familiar from different missions he'd been on in darkwire, and would serve to be a good foundation to start.

"When I've fought droids before, I usually had something to short circuit their heads with," he mused, hefting the training blade and testing its balance. "It'll be strange going at them without that for once..."

Connel just smirked as Cartri looked over what was available and then asked about the droids. He could be coy, and let the kid find out, and it would be fun to watch, but it could also drive the kid into hiding. He needed to know the truth.

They are “reactive”. The more aggressive you are, the more aggressive they will be. The more skill you show… the faster you are… and so on.

Walking over and clapping one on the shoulder, he kept going. I did not have the luxury of another Padawan, or a Temple, or anything other than my Mother and Father to learn from, so I worked with these a lot. I can teach you everything else, but I cannot teach you your own instincts. That is what these guys are here to help you with. They will not hurt you, but they will not stop until either you tap, or I call for them to. They’ll come at you from all angles because that is how it is out in the field. You may be alone and ambushed, and what you learn here will stick with you and help you there.

A mouthful to be sure, but one he hoped would help.

Slowly twirling the one-handed lightsaber in his grip, Cartri stepped in front of Connel and gave a small nod. "Right… and I'm guessing the force I strike with gets sent right back at me?" he asked, finishing the thought his master had begun about the training droids. Even if they were designed for practice, he knew better than to underestimate them; they weren't built to kill, but he was certain they'd leave a mark if given the chance.

He let out a soft sigh, his usually bright expression dimming for a moment. "Well… at least you had parents to show you the ropes," he murmured. The solemn note faded quickly, replaced by a faint smile tugging at one corner of his mouth. "I'm no stranger to being ambushed, or fighting enemies bigger and stronger than me. I've learned how to handle those situations. Using a lightsaber, though, that's going to be an entirely different challenge."

Turning back toward the droids, curiosity slipped into his voice. "Do these units have the camouflage feature? The one where they can shift into someone and mimic their fighting style?"

When Cartri tried to finish his thought, Connel shrugged. Not exactly, they will always hit hard, but they will not fight to kill.

When Cartri made his observation about not having a mother or father, Connel’s eyebrow shot up. He missed the point entirely. That was not to judge, simply to say that you have to work with what you have, and you clearly did. However that doesn’t mean that you don’t have more to learn. I’m not here to change you, just add to what you have.

He shrugged.

As long as you are willing to add… and to answer your question. No.

Cartri slowly nodded at his master's words, silently agreeing. If he wasn't here to be changed, that suited him fine. He had no desire to be shaped into something he wasn't. He'd survived the streets of Denon as a cocky ginger kid, and there was no point trying to fix what already worked. Improving his fighting and slicing skills would be hugely beneficial, especially if he could finally learn to tame the Force, which had always been a struggle for him.

"Good. That's all I needed to hear…"

Turning back to the droid, Cartri wrapped his fingers around the hilt of the one-handed training sword and bounced lightly on his feet in an unorthodox stance. He had never used a saber before; he was walking into this blind. For now, he'd fight the way he knew, like he was holding a steel bar.

"I'm ready to start, Master."

Okay, Father. How would you have handled this?

That is when he realized that it was actually a good thing that this kid was not on the Jedi Order, New, Old, “New” New, “New” Old… whatever. If he were, he would not last long, but he’s not. He’s got the heart and sensibilities to be amazing, but he needs a shot to show it. That is something that the Orders (though to absolutely no fault of their own) do not afford. That is why they had come together. Connel knew the truth. Being a Jedi is not about loyalty to Ashla, it is about the choices you make.

Well played, Father, well played.

You’ve heard my story about how I was … rebuit with all of these fancy little cybernetics. Well, I was put in that position out of fear. The fear that the stereotypical “Jedi” that many think of us see, and would abhor. I was so afraid of disgracing my last name that it manifested a personality that took over. For a long time I was even afraid of even picking up a lightsaber.

Pressing a button on his gauntlet that activated the video receptors on the droid who started to mimic Catri’s movements. The droid’s precise mimicry of Catri’s movements demonstrated the advanced synchronization of its systems. Connel watched, intrigued by how technology could replicate even the subtlest gestures.

I was so afraid of failing, that it was a self-defeating prophecy. It was only when I followed the path I am on, not trying to be anything other than myself is when I started to be more and more effective. You have all the skills you need, all of them. I am here to simply help you unlock them… and maybe add a little bit of polish. By the way, the droid is ready as well, so make a move on it when you are. It will defend by scanning your style.

Grinning, he cast a glance over his shoulder at Connel.

"I suppose you could say the same about me. I don't exactly have a family name to tarnish. The only other person who ever carried 'Deesa' slipped out of this universe a long time ago." His smile softened, shaded with something quieter. "So if I'm going to make a name for myself, I'd better be careful I don't let it twist me into something I'm not. I wouldn't mind being known someday… but I get what you mean about letting that kind of thing seep into your head."

Turning back toward the training droid, his expression hardened, posture drawing tight with focus.

"It almost happened on Denon," he murmured, more to himself than anyone else. "Trust me, won't happen again."

With a sudden burst of motion, Cartri lunged forward. He shifted his weight, twisting for power, and drove his one handed sword in a downward arc aimed straight for the droid's shoulder plate, looking to make the metal ring with its impact.

"It almost happened on Denon,""Trust me, won't happen again."

Connel just shrugged. If it does, it does. We’ll face it and address it. The point in this nonchalant sounding observation was anything but. He was not going to abandon the kid, he was there for and with him until Cartri was able to do this for a Padawan of his own.

Cartri was a lot more effective than he was. This was a fun spar to watch because the droid was trying to match and mirror Cartri’s aggression, but couldn’t, at least not directly. The droid was programmed with physical knowledge of every form and sub-form(Caltin made the primary programming) but this was something new.

This also was something in the way of the inspiration of where Connel would take this. Don’t try to push the issue… let it come to you and react. You can be aggressive while countering.

The kid was going to learn how to close those openings he was showing.

As the training droid advanced with its slow, deliberate steps, Cartri obeyed Connel's command and held his ground, allowing the machine to strike first. His fingers tightened around the hilt in tense anticipation. He watched the droid as it lifted its weapon high above its head, preparing to bring it crashing down onto his shoulder.

Blocking a blow like that with a one-handed practice blade was impossible. Cartri reacted instantly, springing backward as the heavy strike hammered into the floor where he'd been standing a heartbeat before. He barely had time to reset his footing when the droid followed up with a sweeping slash from the right.

This time, Cartri shifted left, using the droid's own momentum against it. The machine staggered past him, off balance for a precious second. Seizing the opportunity, he pivoted and drove a solid kick into the droid's back. Metal clanged loudly as it lurched forward and crashed face down onto the mat.

Cartri turned toward Connel with a satisfied smirk, nodding at his handiwork. "Like tha-"

He didn't get the words out.

With mechanical precision, the droid snapped up into a kneeling position, torso rotating in a blur. Before Cartri could react, the training blade sliced sideways, striking him in the ribs. He hadn't seen it coming. The impact knocked him back a few stumbling steps, a sharp breath escaping him. A scowl replaced his earlier confidence as he clutched his side.

"Oh, come on…" he groaned, irritation edging his voice.

Connel yelled out. Droid! Stand down!

Cartri was agitated. Understandably so. Which is why Connel let them take a moment. Taking a breath as he looked back and forth between the young man and droid, he simply stated. Reminder, don’t try to push the issue… you did so by looking at me for approval. If you needed my approval on this, you would not be learning it. You have the natural skills to be a master of this ability. That is not me mincing words or trying to talk you up either…

Anyone who knows Vanagor knows that if they don’t mean it, they won't say it. Again… just relax. I know that it’s easy for me to say that, but the droid can slow down if you need it to. The purpose of this is to let the skills base off of your reflexes and to let them come to you.
