MIDVINTER - OUTSIDE HEAVENHEIM
VANAGOR HOMESTEAD

Snow fell softly across Heavenheim.

Beyond the tall windows of the Vanagor residence, Midvinter’s mountains stood beneath the pale morning sun, their ancient peaks burnished gold above valleys of blue-white shadow. Within, the house remained quiet. Peaceful. Dignified. The sort of home befitting a Jedi Master, a Lord of Midvinter and the inheritor of one of the oldest surviving names in the Order.

Then Buster came around the corner at full speed.

The Gallinorese Mountain Aak Dog thundered across the polished floor with a young boy looking very familiar seated astride his back, one hand buried in the dog’s fur and the other raising a wooden lightsaber above his head.

He yelled something silly… heroic…

A dark wool cloak streamed behind him. It had once belonged to Connel.

Behind them ran another, his sister clearly, wearing only one boot and carrying the other beneath her arm. She was warning him of danger, but sharing it at the same time.

They argued, they’re brother and sister.

At the end of the corridor stood another, their sister..

Unlike her siblings, she was not running. She knelt beside an open floor panel surrounded by tools, wiring and several components that had unquestionably been attached to something important earlier that morning. Her eyes widened. “Oh.”

The corridor lights went out.

Buster barked.

The boy shouted something heroic. His pursuant sister shouted something practical. A large decorative shield fell from the wall. Connel Vanagor stepped out of the adjoining room just in time to catch it with one hand.

Everything stopped.

Buster’s paws skidded across the floor. Caltin leaned backward, cloak falling across his face. Coci froze with the missing boot still tucked under her arm. The calm sister slowly placed a hydrospanner behind her back.

Connel surveyed the corridor.

His father’s ceremonial shield rested in one hand.

His cloak was tied around his son’s shoulders. Half the house had lost power. His youngest daughter was sitting beside what appeared to be the dismantled regulator from the environmental control system.

Buster looked delighted.

Connel drew a slow breath. Yes. That was Jedi Master Connel Vanagor. Shadow. Warden. Lord of Midvinter. Veteran of Coruscant, Thyferra and more special-forces operations than the Republic would ever acknowledge. And these were the three people who had defeated him before breakfast.

Lira appeared in the doorway behind him holding a cup of caf. She examined the darkness, the tools, the children and the enormous dog occupying most of the corridor. “What happened?”

Three small voices answered simultaneously.

“‘Womprat’ had an idea.”

“‘Lizard Monkey’ made it dangerous.”

“I was preventing casualties.”

Connel looked toward his wife. They have established a command structure.

Lira took an unhurried sip. ”Which one is in charge?”

“Womprat!”

“I am not!”

They glared at each other.

“Get off Buster.” The boy immediately climbed down.

Lira raised one eyebrow. Connel nodded. Young Lady.

Buster crossed the corridor and planted himself beside the calm sister. She wrapped both arms around his neck and whispered something into his ear. His tail began striking the floor. Connel narrowed his eyes. What did she tell him?

“That he is a very good boy,” ‘Womprat’ answered.

The son shook his head gravely. “She is recruiting him.”

Connel crouched before the open panel and inspected Cera’s work. She had not torn the regulator apart carelessly. Every component had been arranged neatly. Every fastener was accounted for. What were you trying to do?

The oldest, spitting image of her mother looked toward the darkened windows. “I wanted the lights to look like the stars.”

Connel’s expression softened. Of course she had. Beside him, the pursuer reached up and took her brother’s hand before he could object to the loss of his campaign. The son removed Connel’s cloak and folded it with exaggerated care.

Legacy. Peace. Possibility.

Three pieces of Connel’s life, carrying three different parts of it forward. Lira came to stand beside him. Her shoulder rested lightly against his. “Well?” she asked.

Connel studied the dismantled regulator.

Then he looked at the three hopeful faces watching him. We repair the environmental controls first.

The oldest brightened. “And then?”

Then we make the lights look like stars.

The brother raised his wooden saber. The pursuer caught his wrist before he struck the ceiling.

Buster barked his approval.

Connel closed his eyes. Lira smiled into her caf. The House of Vanagor had survived wars, Sith Lords, fallen Jedi, ancient curses and the collapse of entire governments. Its greatest challenge had arrived all at once.

YEARS BEFORE THIS... i.e. the Present Day.

Three people sat in his den, looking him come out… gobsmacked. Connel Vanagor faced his own mortality. He faced legions, he stopped terrorists, he tracked down mysteries, he rose the ranks. This? What just happened? Reminded him just how little he knows about the galaxy, and about life.

Well… we expected one… He grinned. ... want to come meet the three of them?
