Provisioning and Field Cookery
JEDI CULINARY CLASS

VeridiaVeridian Jedi Temple + Academy

Braze had chosen a broad clearing within the western gardens of the Veridian Jedi Temple, where the pale Temple roofs could still be glimpsed beyond the fruit trees. Warm sunlight settled across the grass, tempered by the shade of spreading branches and the cool breath of water passing through a nearby irrigation channel. The air carried the fragrance of crushed herbs from the garden beds, soon joined by the earthier scent of woodsmoke.

Several cooking stations had been arranged in a loose semicircle around the clearing. Each possessed its own stone-ringed firepit, iron grate, preparation table, water vessel, and neatly ordered set of utensils. Braze had also placed fire-suppression equipment within easy reach of every station.

A long table near the center held a generous gathering of fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Leafy vegetables, edible roots, cultivated mushrooms, and bundles of fragrant herbs had come from the Temple gardens. Baskets of fruit had been carried down from the nearby orchards, while rice, bamboo, soybeans, berries, Embergrain, Honey, and loose Veridian tea represented the produce of neighboring farms and market villages. Fresh fish from Shiomura rested in chilled metal trays, their silver scales catching the sunlight beneath a thin layer of crushed ice.

Only a small portion of the table had been surrendered to preserved provisions. Dried ingredients, sealed ration packets, and travel-safe seasonings waited there to demonstrate what could be carried when fresh food was unavailable. Today, however, the students would be working primarily with ingredients gathered, grown, or caught on Veridia.

At the center of it all stood a chalkboard bearing the day's lesson in carefully written Aurebesh.

TODAY'S MENU

Herb-Stuffed Shiomura Fish
Leaf-Wrapped and Fire-Roasted

Rice Steamed in Bamboo Tubes

Grilled Temple Vegetables and Mushrooms

Fire-Roasted Orchard Fruit

with Honey and Berries

Veridian Tea Brewed over the Fire

The menu had been selected so that each dish required a different measure of care. The fish would teach cleaning, seasoning, wrapping, and how to judge whether food had cooked through without scorching it. The bamboo rice demanded careful measurement and steady heat, while the vegetables would punish anyone who neglected them over the open flame. Even the fruit required restraint; honey burned quickly, and crushed berries could turn bitter if left too long against the heat.

The young Knight knelt beside the central firepit, his white hair bound securely away from his face as he adjusted the split wood beneath the grate. He wore a plain dark apron over his usual clothing.

A small flame caught beneath the kindling. Braze watched it take hold before rising and brushing a trace of ash from his hands. Everything appeared ready: ingredients inspected, tools arranged, fires prepared, and enough additional food set aside to account for mistakes and unexpectedly hungry Padawans.

Now he merely had to wait and discover how many Jedi could be trusted near an open flame.

Leos stood in front of his fish, sort of just... prodding at it. He was supposed to clean this thing? And then there was the smell. It wasn't the worst thing ever, but it made his head spin in a not-so-nice kind of way. The boy let out a sigh as his gaze drifted to whatever random spot on the garden wall he could find.

Daiyu wasn't like this. Cooking was just for utility. Pre-made meals were cheap and quick, kept you on the move faster. Now he had all of these things, stored without plastic.

Some of it even having things in-tact like scales and eyes.

The eyes made it particularly difficult to parse how to even cut into the thing. Even though the fish was dead, it was looking into his soul. The thought of its spirit judging him through those soulless eyes made him shudder.

Hopefully no fish would haunt him after today.

May the fork be with you!

Soren had been following a lead on other Jedi active in the galaxy, rumours of an outcast order that he might fit in with better had led him out to Veridia in the Unknown Regions. After landing, he'd begun to seek out the Veridian temple only to get distracted by the smell of a fire as he entered the front gates. Growing up on Coruscant, the smell of an open fire was still pretty exotic, and he was very quickly distracted.

Soren turned away from his path to seek the source of the smell, stumbling on the opening, seeing at least two Jedi he'd never seen before in his life. Soren's stomach spoke before his brain, grumbling loudly. He had no idea how to cook, so he'd only been eating preserved packaged rations for the long trip out here, of which the packaging was more appetizing than the ration.

"What's cookin'?" He asked, completely missing the obvious sign and the fact that the setup was more like a classroom than a proper kitchen.

Cooking with Connel?
Jedi Temple
Veridia

It had been a long time since Connel had been to Veridia and when he had received a message from Braze Braze it had been a surprise to say the least. So he was here now, a little bit later than planned, but here nonetheless. He didn’t know why Braze Braze had asked him to come, but he figured he’d find out soon enough. For now he was just going to walk the halls, get a feel for the place, and see what there was to see. He was still getting used to the new look of Veridia, but it was growing on him the more he saw of it the more he liked. One thing that was different was those who were addressing him, he was still getting used to being called “Master” by other Jedi. Not only that but the staff addressed him as “Lord” as well. They must be in contact with Midvinter, that was not something he talked about.

Anyway… here he was…

Directed to the training room, Connel walked in and looked around and saw… Cooking Class. Okay I’m not sure that they have the right Vanagor for that, or that they’re on time, but… should be fun… It had been awhile, but Cooking with Caltin was something his father enjoyed, and sure, Connel could cook as well but not on that level.

[Text in Brackets is spoken on Comm-link] ~Like this is through the Force~

Starlin had been outside since dawn helping with the set up, having arrived with Braze Braze a few days prior. The boy was no stranger to open fire, his home was not known for being technologically advanced, or even technologically standard, so there were plenty of firepits, braziers, and torches abound, all needing to be maintained and at times, when there was no immediate source to borrow a spark from, lit.
Now, granted, his position in Mercuitie had seen him in the role of adoptive-son of the Contra-Usul, or at the very least his ward since the boy referred to his guardians as uncles, not fathers - at least, not in public - which meant there were plenty of people who did those jobs for him. Still, he was not so spoiled as to be wholly unaware of how to do it for himself. Uncle Theryn was all about teaching the boy the basics, thankfully, he'd been raised on Midvinter which had been just as simple as Zaathru.
Survival was key.
"There" the boy said, as he stood from lighting one of the firepits and clapped his hands clean(er) of soot. Braze had made faster work of the rest than him, but Starlin still looked mighty proud to have his own lit. He set his hands on his hips and grinned at the Jedi Knight. "See, I'm not entirely useless."
Then, as Soren Strife Soren Strife rounded the corner and found them there in the gardens, Starlin reached down to pluck up his fish. Unlike Leos Leos he had no real reservations about handling it. "Shiomura fish, at least... it will be when we're done learning from Mister Braze. Apron's are over there," he nodded to a simple pile, urging the Knight to join in without questioning who he was or why he was actually there.

Saul was helping some of the younger kids hold their knives right when Soren came in. When he saw this event on the calendar, it caught his interest. Cooking was something he had always been good at, so why not help teach some? Besides, some of the younger kids hadn't even held a cooking knife before, let alone gutted a fish. So he moved between the tables, helping out where he could.

When a young man with bright neon pink hair ( Soren Strife Soren Strife ) came into the group and asked what's cooking, Saul went to the rack and tossed him one before he could back out. "Make yourself useful. We are probably going to feed the whole of Respite with what we make." Which probably was true. They just had to hope no one lost a finger before they were finished.
