~Find me, Padawan.~

The Jedi Order was in a ridiculous turmoil right now. The Council was at each other's throats, the Temple was in shambles, and the Jedi themselves were divided on what to do next. That made Connel think about what was needed. No, he was not trying to be some single, solitary figure who could save the galaxy from itself or provide some grand solution to the Jedi's problems. Far from it. That being said, he was solidly siding with his aunt on this whole situation. If you don’t know who she is right now, look it up. Moreso, he was siding with what it means to be a Jedi, not just say that you are.

He may agree in principle with many of the Vanguard, but their methods were entirely wrong.

This was a conversation for another time, though, the Jedi in the Temple, the Padawans, the Younglings, and the younger Knights were all in a state of disarray and needed stability. He was no leader, but Connel knew someone who was. He knew someone who knew how to rally and inspire. He watched the man all his life and could tap that energy, starting right now. So he kept a promise he made to the mother of the Padawan he had called for. A promise to keep her son safe and though he may not be able to fully teach, but mentor when possible, watch out for.

Teach.

So he was standing here, in this undisclosed location(the top of one of the spires), his aura completely cloaked, and waiting to be found. There was no time limit, no pressure, no threat of failure, but no signature of the Force to guide the boy either. This was a test, not of skill, but of awareness. It was a test of what it meant to be a Jedi. It was a test of stability in one’s self when things are dire and you cannot rely on the Force to guide you, or others. It was a test of normalcy. Not just for the Padawan, but for Connel, for those watching, for the order itself.

The turmoil seemed to be foolish, trivial matters. The vanguard were going about things in the best way. Sith were running around rampant and a more aggressive hand was needed. It was why Aileni signed up to take part. He was going to do his part in ensuring that the vanguard had the most success in fighting. He was going to work on being a proper Shadow and find ways to infiltrate and provide information back to the vanguard to ensure their strikes would work.

Aileni hadn't been quiet about his views and he demonstrated his skills in handling more advanced missions as well. Aileni was pushing himself hard, making sure that he lived up to the prodigy energy that was generally associated with the advanced Padawan. Aileni had been in his dorm room working on his bow and keeping it well maintained when he received Connel's message. A challenge. Aileni breathed in deeply and slowly exhaled. He had met Connel before but long ago. Before his growth spurt and filling out. Back when he had been an awkward teen.

Stepping out of his room, Aileni knew he had advantages in hunting others, his senses were higher and more discerned than other humanoids. Tracking and hunting was never an issue for Aileni.

Cloaking himself with the Force as he lowered his own presence in the Force till it was minute, Aileni moved through the corridors. Hunting down a scent, there was a cautious movement in his actions. Aileni was not doing anything without making sure that he was doing it with the most reasonable level of security that he could obtain in a situation.

He found a trackable scent of Connel, recognising the scent as he followed. Before he approached Connel, knowing where the man was. Aileni moved around as he continued to follow the trail. His eyes scanned the area, moving cautiously and invisibly as Aileni took his time. It hadn't taken that long to find Connel, it took far longer to ensure that when he approached, he was not walking into some trap. Aileni was far too aware that traps were always sprung on those who were not cautious or thought a friend would never trap them.

Aileni suspected everyone of traps.

Stepping out of the shadows, Aileni leaned against a wall. "So, you called in such a mysterious way, what's up?" Aileni asked curious as his vivid emerald eyes looked over to the other man.

Not bad, kid…

He jumped off the spire and to the ground. A soft thud was heard as he landed gracefully on his feet. The Hawkeye implants in his eyes allowed him to see every detail of the surroundings, even in low light conditions. So he knew where every enemy was hiding, except in this case, he knew where Aileni would be. … but...

This time the voice came from a distance, barely audible over the wind. You forgot what I told you when we first met. If Aileni turned, he would see that the voice belonged to a figure standing near the edge of the sanctuary, cloaked in shadows. Walking out, it was indeed Connel. I said, I don’t play by the rules, and neither should you. Think outside the box, kid. You were great, don’t get me wrong, but there’s always more than one way to skin a cat. Consider this a test of your adaptability, not just your combat skills.

Now, tell me what you could have done differently to get here. I’m not saying “better”, I’m asking how you could have done it differently. That’s the key to growth, and the only way to truly surpass what others expect of you.

Aileni wasn't surprised or concerned when Connel revealed himself, he shrugged his shoulders when the other Jedi mentioned that he forgot about not playing by the rules. Aileni didn't play by rules himself and he never forgot what had been told to him, especially when it came to learning about Jedi Shadow methods. "Skinning a cat? Seems unnecessarily cruel to a domestic animal." Aileni stated, not making any comments on the fact he had not forgotten what had been said before.

When asked by Connel what he could have done differently, "the great hindsight. Well, if I was hunting an actual threat, there would have been traps set and utilising a few other abilities and equipment to ensure that my presence was impossible to be detected." Aileni stated in a cool tone, some might have thought him indifferent to all this. But he was merely analysing the situation with the cold calculations that required when discussing differing methods and ideas.

"I also would not have approached through the most obvious entrance if I was truly hunting an enemy. I would let them assume that was the only way I could approach to draw their focus there, but there are always other ways to enter. Especially if you are determined enough." Aileni mentioned.

One thing Connel had forgotten about the kid was he was very literal. That was fine, Connel freaked out when he first heard the phrase himself. I’m not interested in skinning cats, it’s just a “slang” phrase, another way of saying that there is more than one way to do the same thing. That is what all of this is about. Adaptation.

Gesturing for Aileni to walk with him, Connel took a leisurely walk, pointing out many of the fauna. You have an interesting mind, Padawan. You think like a predator, but you have a conscientious heart. I respect that greatly. You have the best of both proverbial worlds. One thing that you could also work on, when it comes to adaptation is “contingencies.” A Shadow doesn’t only have a plan, they have a plan for when that plan fails, and a backup plan for when their back-up plan fails, and so on.

A Shadow isn’t just sneaky, they’re three steps ahead of the opponent who thinks they’re two steps ahead of them.
That was why he asked Aileni to define what he would have done differently on approach, not to say those would have worked, or not, but to make him think about the scenario from multiple angles, not just the one presented to him.A contingency isn't admitting your first plan is flawed. It's acknowledging you're mortal. And mortals make mistakes, or plans change, and you need to be ready for that at every turn, contingencies buy time, they improve. Never confuse a plan with victory. Plans die. You don't.

I’m not picking your thoughts or anything, I would have given the same answer if I were in your place, but let me ask you. Those traps you would set, those ways to be “impossible to detect”. What if they were? Don’t overthink or dwell on this. I’m not looking to bog your mind down or make your question everything.
He actually was doing just that, but in a positive light. Xeriac had loads of potential, he just needed to be steered in the right direction, and that was precisely what Connel was trying to do, whether he knew it or not.

"I wasn't stating you were wishing to do so, just questioning the phrase itself. Why have it? Clearly people did wish to skin cats, it was popular to the point that a saying could be made about there being various ways. That was all, I do not believe you wish to skin cats, Connel." Aileni clarified, hoping that he had not caused offense with the confused comment. "Adaptation is understandable and I have had to do that a lot, especially in the more recent years." His body had shot up another foot or so and his physique had become significantly bulkier. He was far more herculean than the lanky teenager he had been when he first met Connel.

Aileni shrugged away the compliment, it was not something he felt deserved. This was merely who he was. "Dathomir breeds the need to survive, to fight and be a predator. Nothing is given to you. Yet, I have been here a long time now as well, learned from the Jedi about compassion and the need to protect those who cannot protect themselves." Aileni stated as he walked, he had worked a lot on learning how to understand those around him. He was still in many ways an outsider in his mind. But he knew more of what he was wanting to fight for. Understanding why he was involved in the Jedi and the risks of failing the missions he took on.

"Plans die. I don't? Are you claiming I am immortal?" Aileni raised an eyebrow, "plans fail and I could die. We all die." Aileni mentioned, thinking about the fact that while he was in understanding he could live thousands of years with ease, he would eventually meet his demise. Nothing lasted forever and he was not guaranteed those thousands of years.

A mission goes poorly, very poorly. And he would perish like anyone else.

"If they did not work, you go with secondary traps, pitfalls and the like. If that fails, then I would stand and fight. Use the combat skills that I have to succeed. If that fails, then I flee, retreating from a superior enemy is not a bad thing, especially when you no longer have an advantage." Aileni stated, he was not someone with a built ego that could only see retreating as a cowards option. If the situation demanded it, he would not stay and fight. Sacrifice only mattered if it was going to make a lasting impact, and last stands rarely made that impact.

Lifting an eyebrow at Aileni’s clarification, he was surprised that the kid seemed to take offense, like Connel … Nevermind. Fair enough.

When Aileni was referencing his increase in height which made Connel laugh genuinely. Yeah. I kind of noticed that. Sheesh, I thought my dad was tall.

Then it started to become clear to Connel the more he was trying to speak. You’re overthinking things, Aileni. It’s okay, I do too sometimes. Don’t worry about it too much, but relax. The point is that if you go into it with a clear head, you’ll be able to handle anything that comes your way. That comes first and foremost. It’s like the military, many of them have a saying “Detailed planning, loose execution”– meaning, plan as best you can, but don’t get so caught up in it that you lose sight of the bigger picture and fail to adapt when necessary.

Then he stopped for a moment. I see you being a great Jedi Aileni… and you’re going to influence both the Light and that of your heritage on Datomir. Just be patient. You have it in your blood.
