Just go up, wait for the bartender to come to you...you don't want to call him out. Then as you tap your fingers on the bar waiting for the bartender to come, you casually look the opposite direction, then to the side that you want to make contact with.
If the guy's attention is near ready for contact, just give him a casual smile and an acknowledging nod...no hello or anything. just keep that happy little smile and he'll do the rest. After all, we're all there to meet new people.
It's little signals that you need to send out...no more.
If the bartender gets to you first...then go to plan 'B'.
order the drink and as you wait, there is about a minute for plan 'A' to still work.
If plan 'A' fails along with plan 'B'...pay for the drink and curse the gods.
