STANDARD FEATURES
  • All standard features. The ship comes fully equipped with the whole standard array of shields, sensors, systems and components that are normally associated with vessels of this size and class. among others:
ADVANCED SYSTEMS
STRENGTHS
  • Features a comprehensive stealth suite. It can deploy squadrons without breaking the cloak, though firing its weapons will upset its camouflage.
  • Carrier. Can carry and deploy a swarm of strike craft. That is its main purpose, along with being stealthy.
  • Contains a potent sensor array, including advanced systems such as a CGT, and high powered communication equipment capable of transmitting across vast distances and preventing communications from being intercepted, blocked, jammed etc.
  • Features HIMS to help against interdiction fields and gravity wells.
WEAKNESSES
  • Its armaments are mainly defensive. It's never going to stand up to a big capital ship 1v1.
  • Usage of the SLAM reduces the ship's agility. Moreover, protracted and repeated use can place an undue strain on the ship's engines.
  • Cloak or Shields: With its stygium cloak active, the Obsidian Shard cannot use its deflector shield system and must decloak in order to activate it.
  • Open Frame: The sheer amount of hangar space causes a lack of internal integrity to the vessel, making it vulnerable to warheads and internal detonations.
  • Returning the strike craft to the carrier can get tricky in middle of battle. Attack craft that have hyperdrives could escape out of the combat zone to be recollected, but some might have been damaged or there might be times when leaving the combat zone is not an option, or there is a need for on site search and rescue. For in combat collection, the carrier may, for example, temporarily de-cloak, another option is snatching the fighters with a tractor beam when they get close. But the last two options can potentially leave the carrier more vulnerable.
DESCRIPTION

As a dedicated carrier, the Obsidian Shard Class Carrier features only a small number of capital ship weapons in form of a couple ion cannons and fast mount turbolasers. In that regard it is underarmed compared to capital ships of a comparable size. It is never going to stand up to a big capital ship in a straight one-on-one fight. The majority of its armaments is dedicated to a respectable number of point defence weapons, which are spread evenly across its hull, and other defensive armaments.

Its hull has an alusteel frame supporting durasteel armoured plates. However, the vessel can deliver payloads of attack craft. Moreover, it possesses a comprehensive stealth suit, and advanced communications gear. Use of Enlightentment quantum communicators, Ghostwave transmitters and other gadgets assures communications security. Moreover, it possesses a long range full-spectrum sensor array.

Rather than an exposed bridge tower, it possesses an internal, CIC-style set-up to protect the bridge crew and thus ensure that all command and control processes are carried out smoothly. Internal containment methods include guards, heavy blast doors, ray shields and decompression traps Equipped with multiple hangars, the carrier is able to rapidly deploy its complement of attack craft, with its stealth systems granting it the element of surprise. The incorporation of solid fuel converters and specialised 3D Printers ensures a high degree of recycling efficiency. Indeed, the latter system grants each carrier a certain degree of manufacturing ability by taking physical objects, breaking them down and rearranging them into other things such as munitions. This is obviously not as good as a full resupply behind friendly lines, but it does make long-distance missions more viable. It also has substantial repair facilities.

The typical approach for offensive deployment is to have the vessel stealthily drop into the system and serve as a mobile staging ground for its squadrons. A pseudointerdictor can allow the Obsidian Shard to play the role of disrupter if need be, using unconventional interdiction capabilities against a foe from afar. An elaborate array of sensors grants the vessel impressive awareness of its surroundings, allowing it to gather information without giving its position away.

Returning the strike craft to the carrier can get tricky in middle of battle. Attack craft that have hyperdrives could escape out of the combat zone to be recollected, but some might have been damaged or there might be times when leaving the combat zone is not a viable option, or there is a need for on site search and rescue. For in combat collection, the carrier may, for example, temporarily de-cloak or just lift the cloak for the hangar area, another option is snatching the fighters with a tractor beam when they get close. But the last two options can potentially leave the carrier more vulnerable. Ghostwave transmitters are useful for communications with squadrons.
