How many posts would I need to sub a Knight-level NPC for use as a capital-ship piloting trainer for the SJ's Jedi PCs?

(Here capital ships are defined as corvettes and larger)

It would depend on the NPC's skill and range of powers. Is s/he a good combatant as well? Can s/he do more than feel to help starfights? Is s/he helping with mere piloting or all the aspects of keeping a capital ship going? I would recommend holding a faction thread where you use said NPC to hold a class, bolster it to as many posts as you can and then go from there.

[member="Rekali the Hutt"] My alt [member="Charzon Loulan"] already used her to help recondition a 2000m-long cargo ship into a carrier, 20 posts. All she did pre-Omega was to pilot capital ships in combat.

In Omega (five years after the Mateus was reconditioned), I had her run the entire operations of the ship, starting in round 7, commanding the aforementionned carrier. Any posts from [member="Charzon Loulan"] plus any posts from [member="Omega"] in Deadly Void where damage has been resolved will count (16-18 posts depending on how many rounds there are).

Total (tentative): 36-38 posts - she will be subbed once the fleeting part of Omega is over.

As a rather run-of-the-mill Jedi, she knows the classical stuff demanded of everyone:
  • Force Sense (Knight level)
  • Force-push/pull (Padawan level)
  • Mind trick (Padawan level)
In addition to that, two skills that are useful when piloting and commanding capital ships:
  • Instinctive Astrogation (Knight level)
  • Battle meditation (Knight level)
But clearly Julie is a NPC that is different from your run-of-the-mill Jedi Ace in that she specializes in capital ships rather than fighters.

With a lightsaber she is really just a Padawan-level chick. Her tentative NPC sheet:

Name: Julie Jutland
Loyalties: Silver Jedi
Role: Julie is a capital ship piloting trainer for the Silver Jedi

Development Threads:
  • Ohmic Resistance - Julie pilots the Mateus on its shakedown cruise (20 posts)
  • Deadly Void (Fleeting) - Julie pilots, and later assumes command, of the Mateus as a field commission over Castameer; posts #1, 13, 19, 24, 43, 47, 56, 64, 73, 82, 97, 103, 114, 127, 131 (15 posts and counting)
(Tentative) 36-38 posts total

Age: 32
Species: Human

Appearance: See above image

Personality: Julie is a proactive risk-taker; she seems fond of playing pazaak and sabacc in casinos when she isn't piloting or otherwise going around her business functions. But, as a Jedi, she feels that her fellow Jedi Aces are putting themselves in harm's way all. She takes almost excessive amounts of pride in her capital ship piloting skills (here capital ships are defined as corvettes and larger) and is rather condescending to her fellow capital ship pilots as well as her superiors since she feels that piloting capital ship skill is one item of tactical importance that all too many admirals neglect. Nevertheless, so long as it doesn't pertain to capital ship piloting, Julie is rather non-judgmental otherwise and a somewhat slow learner for non-piloting skills.

Force Sensitivity: Knight

Weapon of Choice: Green-bladed ightsaber - she cannot weaponize the Force

Skills:
  • Capital ship piloting (Elite)
  • Starfighter piloting (Trained-Veteran)
  • Soresu (Padawan level)
Force-powers:

  • Force Sense (Knight level)
  • Force-push/pull (Padawan level)
  • Mind trick (Padawan level)
  • Instinctive Astrogation (Knight level)
  • Battle meditation (Knight level)

Wealth: Moderately wealthy by virtue of being the chief process officer of Ringovinda StarYards

Combat Function: She would be more useful in fleeting than in ground combat or in a boarding action: she is useless in ranged combat in such situations. As a lightsaber combatant she is assumed to be similar to a Padawan-level combatant.

Notable Possessions: A green-bladed lightsaber, a set of jade-colored Jedi robes

History: Born on Tion in 817 ABY, Julie was born to a military family. Her mother was a tank driver. Her father that died at a young age during her teens, serving the Levantine Sanctum as a Star Destroyer pilot, when the ship he was posted on was lost with all hands, and the loss of the ship was ruled to be piloting error. Since that day, she vowed to become the best capital ship pilot in the galaxy. She initially entered Jedi service because she was found to be Force-sensitive as a teenager. Afterward, she proved to be a rather skilled pilot, and she found herself at home as a Star Destroyer pilot on the very same class of ship that her father served on.

While still a Padawan, due to the sluggishness of her learning, she became the Chief Process Officer of Ringovinda StarYards after the last one moved on out for greater opportunities. Many suspect that the Ringovindian government has put pressure on Charzon to stock a Jedi observer on its board for it to maintain affiliation to the Silver Jedi, serving in that capacity and being knighted in the five years she served as an executive.

Intent: To provide the Silver Jedi with a capital-ship piloting trainer

Is it acceptable for me to make a slavery ring NPC organization? It would mainly be for private threads, possibly faction threads once/if it get fleshed out more.

Right now I'm thinking of making npc templates for some of the more prominent members, but I'm not sure if it's appropriate to make individual entries or if it's okay for me to throw them all in one entry for ease of use.

[member="Joza Perl"]

This is acceptable. You may submit them as a unit if you like, or you may submit them as multiple (individual) NPC templates within one submission. We ask that you do not put more than three of those in one. If you have more than 3 individuals to submit, just do two submissions of 3, or however many you plan to use.

It would probably be best to create them as a unit and then you can state your character's membership in both the submission and whatever else you write. The Codex only has companion templates for beasts and droids - do the NPCs you have in mind fit in either of those categories?

It's possible, yes. Necessity is up to you. I've never seen anyone do a crew for a large ship, only personal ships of small size. As for size, that's dependent on quality and availability, which those depend on what you choose. Lower quality means greater size potential, generally. Higher quality means much less of them.

NPCs are intended for support roles and background fluff. Custom lightsaber styles are something that should be saved for full PCs that have the development and history to back up such unique attributes and skills. An NPC should also not be submitted for the sole intent of PvP (military units notwithstanding, being that they are created for background noise and lore more than anything). A custom lightsaber style begets the idea that the NPC is being created for combat.

Rule of thumb: An NPC should never outshine a PC. Save the special snowflake stuff for the PCs. Keep your NPCs basic.

Would I be able to create a NPC character then use them as a PC at a later point?
Yes. This happens from time to time. However you will need to keep in mind that if this NPC happens to be a Force User and you submit it at Knight rank or above, if and when you decide to make it a full PC you will not be able to transfer the NPC's rank and must start the PC from Padawan level.

Is it okay to make a deceased master character, to use as a manufacturer of some subs for the Factory, notably Force Artifacts, or would that violate any rules?
Yes, you can submit NPCs that are presently deceased. This has been done before more for the lore of the character in question. This should not violate any rules, no, however it may present some difficulty for you if you are asked for development threads for any of the artifacts you submit.
