Atmosphere of Rhommamool | Personal Ship
Objective A
Two planets so close to each other, yet so far. No mutual understanding, no friendship, no happiness. The planets looked a lot as if they were in a need of an aid from the outside. Somebody who would make the two understand what they were doing to each other. Somebody who could make those people stand united and be friends.
Was the Galactic Republic the right faction to do that? Maybe, maybe not. But did they try to be that faction? Definitely.
Lilin had had her eye on the planet for long and even though she still did not like the Galactic Republic that much and she was merely a Padawan, she did not feel like these two planets should be ignored and left to handle their things by themselves.
Wasn't it the Republic's mission to ease such unrest and bring people together in harmony?
Her ship had just arrived to the atmosphere of the planet of Rhommamool where she had heard criminals were out of control and trying to fight so much against their twin planet and the Galactic Republic's interest in the world. The planet's lack of control over such people was troubling and even military personnel didn't dare to stand against such outlaws. Perhaps Jedi were able to fight against them?
The girl's eyes rested on the desert planet, her breathing fast, short and shallow and her heartbeat fast. It was a difficult mission. She'd not dealt with criminals before -- she had heard they didn't abide to any moral rules, unlike Sith and any other enemy she had fought against in the past.
She would see if such rumours were true. But until then, she would enjoy the trip and do anything to bring the planet and perhaps even its 'sibling' under the control of the Galactic Republic.

OOC Information:
Clarification on the matter -- the destruction of Rhommamool is to be considered non-canon as per this post, as well as the current galactic map which still has the planet on it.
Objectives:
A: A group of criminals are against the Galactic Republic gaining control over Rhommamool and have started an attack on Redhaven, the capital of Rhommamool. Fight these criminals and bring these outlaws to the court. [ Jedi-Centered ]
B: For long, the planets of Rhommamool and Osarian have been fighting with each other and now as the two planets are really close to each other, the unrest is at its peak. Seek to dissolve such aggressive relationship between the two planets and come to a diplomatic agreement. [ Senator-Centered ]
C: As the planets of Rhommamool and Osarian are incredibly close to each other, the forces of Osarian are gathering troops to fight the twin planet. Stand against the army and prevent further wars from taking place. [ Military-Centered ]
D: The planet of Rhommamool has many valuable minerals -- mine these, scavenge for something write your own story or do whatever you wish to. [ Everybody ]
Reminder: Please keep track of your post count in this thread, your location and objective, as well as @mention the people you are interacting with in every post you make in this thread for the ease of understanding.

Ydros looked at the marching troops of the planet of Osarian. They were going to get into a battle. A battle that took place every once in a while when the two planets were close enough to each other. It was going to be a powerful battle -- full of blood, death and sacrifice. He liked such battles. They made him feel slightly amused. Such powerful things gave him goosebumps.

He turned away from the army and started walking towards his ship. He would have to have his eyes on the whole incident that day as if he was born to do that. Maybe he was and he just didn't know? It was a possibility. But he did not believe in destiny.

His footsteps were rather soft and quiet on the grassy land of the planet. No matter what, he would still hide in the shadows. Appearing out of nowhere, dressed in completely black robes didn't leave an emotion of ease and comfort in people.

It was for his own safety and for the safety of others to stay hidden.

The change in pace hit Corvus the moment she entered the building. Temples were usually a place of meditation, the hushed quiet often interrupted by the sound of soft voices from behind a closed door, the excited voices of young children, or the faint sound of splashing fountains.

But now the peace is gone, Corvus thought. The quiet felt ominous. It wasn't the quiet of busy souls going about their day. It was the wary hush of a sanctuary under siege.

She stood alone, outside the closed door of a meeting room. At any moment she would be summoned inside. She had been called here for the most devastating of reasons – a group of criminals were against the Galactic Republic agreeing to incorporate Rhommamool and have started an attack on Redhaven.

To an observer, Corvus would seem to possess her usual composure. But sharp distress ticked underneath the control.

The city was on high security. Even Jedi had been ordered to report in for clearance until further notice. All arrivals and departures were monitored, and no one was allowed to join the fray without permission. Even though Corvus was known, she had to undergo a retinal scan before leaving the spaceport.

Her finger tapped the hilt of her lightsaber, then stopped. Her face smoothed out, and she reached out to the Force to find her centre of calm.

Post: 01/20

The capital city of Osa-Secunde was at once a testament to resilience and defiance. Centuries ago, the former capital of Osarian was destroyed by a massive missile strike, as were numerous other sites across the surface of the planet. The missiles had originated from Rhommamool, the sister world of Osarion. The two planets orbited each other and together, their combined well orbited their parent star. Their orbits were oblong enough that, once every ten years or so, they came within a million kilometers of each other, and that proximity enabled the two to be in missile range. Though hostilities between the world flare frequently, only once has either planet taken advantage of the occasion of that optimal distance.

Those strikes had devastated a once pristine landscape. Radiation from the explosions had permeated the affected areas, not to mention the destruction caused by the impact and explosions of the missiles themselves. But rivalries did not die so quickly. As long as there were those who could remember such a belligerent act, retaliation would always be part of the progression. In the eyes of the Osarion people, they found themselves fortunate that the neighboring world of Rhommamool was so impoverished that the recovery time for initiating such a strike would also take time.

And indeed, the peace between the worlds after that one hostile event was maintained, even if the peace was a cold one. Osarion rebuilt while Rhommamool restocked. The clean-up procedures took an incredible amount of time. The waste from the explosions spread through the water supply, the water was tainted and wildlife died in swathes throughout those biomes. The recovery was only possible due to the wealth held by the Osarions. And after a few centuries, they managed to return their world to a relatively pristine one.

New cities were constructed, new defenses were organized, armies were raised, all with the intent of revenge.

Tyl looked out from the Osarion statehouse at the city beneath it. Sandstone and durasteel buildings rose and fell across the a diverse cityscape of whites, creams, light browns, and grays. Streams and canals ran through the streets and walkways, providing ever-going but faint audio of running water and the sparkling blue hues punctuated the bright colors of the buildings. Fountains and water features stapled the large intersections and a variety of greens provided an overlay of vegetation to the landscape.

The beauty of the construction of Osa-Secunde was harshly contrasted with the massing of a military staging area on the very outskirts of the city. Several others just like it were growing steadily elsewhere across the planet. And there Tyl stood at the statehouse, one of the representatives from the Galactic Republic sent to try and sue for peace between the two worlds. The caucus was reluctantly put together by the leadership of Osarion, and that stubbornness would undoubtedly be a veil over the entire proceedings.

Corvus was able to control her apprehension. She had many questions and speculations, but allowed them to fall below the surface of her thoughts. Rather than focus on them, she chose to meditate.

And she reflected on the recent Invasions of Ord Mirit and Ziost. Some, she knew, would speculate on her convictions. But those that knew her would understand she was a Jedi to the bone. She pressed a hand to her forehead. Her increasing anxiety had caused her to perspire. Or was the Temple simply warm?

At that precise moment the door in front of her hissed open and she stepped into the room. The people ringed the room in a semicircle. Grey light flooded the room from the large windows overlooking the skyline outside. Outside, the wispy clouds looked like thin metallic sheets.

An occasional flash of silver shimmered, the wings of a spacecraft catching a ray of sunshine as the clouds momentarily parted and the room was bathed in gloriously warm yellow light.

Immediately her eyes sought whoever was in charge. As she expected, a balding man spoke first. "We thank you for coming," he said in a dignified way. But his eyebrows knit together worriedly. "To be frank, this event has shaken us. Made us question our decision to join the Republic. Yet…”

Corvus nodded at the silence, “Yet…?”

“This morning I was taking my dawn walk when a small dog ran out at me. I stopped to pet it. Just then, a device planted underneath the footbridge I was about to step on exploded. The intention was to kill me. Luck is all I have to account for being here.”

The man paused. A collective shudder seemed to run through everyone in the room. Clearly many depended on his wisdom.

"I…we, must not dwell on the might haves but instead focus on a solution. We cannot bow down to terrorists and criminals. Please use this act to start your investigations. Our people have sealed off the scene. Perhaps you can use the Force to see if there are any clues?”

This was truly a world in need. Mantic had been accompanying his master to aid the poor on other worlds but that had been nothing compared to this world. It seemed to be lacking in modern technology and with it came an uneducated and fairly rough behaved populace.
There was an abundance of miners passing on the streets and while Mantic, somewhat naively, had expected the capital to hold some.. "grandeur" he had been very dissapointed once he had entered the streets.

There had been a request to the jedi order to come here and aid the republic against criminal gangs who had been invading the streets of Redhaven. It was to be expected perhaps but again Mantic had been slightly overwhelmed once he realized the magnitude of the gangs impact on the capital. Several blocks were told to be under gang control and the local police stood powerless. The jedi sent here was to reinforce law and order, and this world needed those things much more then he had thought when he had departed for Rommammol.

He wore his traditional robes although it did not seem to raise any eyebrows. either they did not care or they were simply ignorant of what they meant. It felt good to be out trying to accomplish something. He missed his masters reassuring presence but also knew that he had to start help the republic despite the fact that he was far from ready as a trained padawan would be. Strapped on his back he wore a training saber, it was no good in a real combat situation but he had brought it anyway.

As he passed a narrow looking alleyway he slowed down his steps. He felt something...

Alyona waited nervously nearby the room her Master had entered some time before. She was pacing back and forth with a nail between her teeth, chewing it impatiently. She wore dark, spacer trousers with a leather waspie corset fastened over a white blouse. Like her lightsabers, her gloves hung from her belt. At the moment, she was bored and anxious, unaware of everything that was transpiring between Osarian and Rhommamool, along with everyone else. Alyona drew the stiletto short blade from her waist and began flipping it about with one hand, trying to whittle away at the time while her Master held whatever discussion she was having with whomever was in that little room.
"What the hell is going on?" Alyona asked allowed as she caught her blade by the hilt and leaned forward to glance at the door to the chamber. After staring a moment with no result, Alyona groaned and returned to her knife-flipping. Before long, that too grew boring, and she slid the small weapon back into its sheath at her waist. Closing her eyes, Alyona focused on the lessons she had learned during her youth at the Ossus Academy, running through each one of them in her mind in the pursuit of calm and inner stability.
Whatever is happening on this world, I must be ready to lend my hand. The people of this system do not need another trigger-happy Force User eager to see battle. They need the penetrating wisdom and ablative calm of the Jedi.

Alyona took a deep breath in and let it out slowly, lessening the frantic expression of her mind. Of course, refusing herself the pleasure of anticipating a battle was hard for Alyona; her nature as an Echani made this certain. Battle was a learning experience, and she was eager to learn all she could from the Rhommamoolians.
She had been, of late, struggling to reconcile the combative nature of her people with the peaceful ways of the Jedi. It wasn't that non-violent diplomacy and dialogue weren't fascinating subjects to Alyona, for they were learning experiences in their own right, but Alyona had gone some time without a good conflict, and her inner self was growing antsy.

The alley was dark. Mantic swallowed hard and realised that fear was closing in. He heard a sound thud from inside the shadows followed by a sinister laughter.

Someone is being robbed... or worse.... Mantic realised. He took a deep breath to reestablish some faith in his own capabilities and push away the fear that was creeping closer. Fear was the path to the dark side and Mantic had no plans on turning into a monster.

Someone needs help... my help...

He felt paralyzed for a moment unable to decide on what to do. Then he shok his head. He needed to get int there and do what was necessary.

He took a few quick steps inside the alley and found a sharp turn. He leaned toward the wall casting a quick glance around the corner of the building. There was a single lamp post and in the white circle of light laid a motionless body. Mantics eyes widened. Had he acted to soon. He rushed forth and knelt by the body. It was a female human, middle aged. Her clothing was rugged and weathery as if she had not changed them in a few days. All around her belly was a red fuild drying in.

"Dont die... I will help you. Stay with me..." he mumbled. Then he unstrapped his training saber and put it on the ground beside him and reached for his med bag strapped to his side.

It was then he sensed it. The others in the shadows...

Mantic whirled around.

"Well hello there jedi spawn..." three rough looking men, a human, a Zabrak and a Nikto faced him down. The Zabrak raised a blaster aimed at his chest.

It was a trap...

Corvus exited the room in two minds. Confidence in the Jedi was never a bad thing. But the belief that clues and evidence would somehow fly to you like iron to a magnet just because you were able to use the Force was setting the bar a little high.

As she left, she spotted Alyona, toying with her blade. It was a tell. She was possibly impatient, bored and anxious. Then she saw the blade sheathed just as her Padawan closed her eyes – no doubt seeking inner calm. Oddly Corvus had been broadly in that spot, using the same techniques only a few moments before. Corvus smiled.

Corvus’ recent encounters on Ord Mirot and Ziost had changed her. Not to a casual observer, but to anyone that knew her, she was different. She had gained a level of emotional intelligence. She was still learning – she started as an effective four-year old only a few weeks ago. She was having to understand feelings and categorise them, learn the subtleties of them and become skilled at how to deal with them.

So for once there was a degree of Empathy for her Padawan. Whereas before there was simply logic to be applied – you simply followed the Code – for once she was able to glimpse why it might be difficult for others.

Oddly it caused no complications in her own approach. Her emotions were interestingly in tune with the Code. Few presented a challenge to her and she could always shut them down if needed – and allow herself the grace of examining them after the event. For someone that was a scholar by nature, it was a natural extension to study emotions rather than Jedi Lore.

“Time to play detective,” she said to her Padawan as she approached. Her voice was low and soft, so as not to startle her, although she expected her presence was sensed anyway. “The role of a Jedi is multi-faceted. Today we’re wanted to be wise and knowing. Although I suspect later we’ll have to make some arrests, so it’ll no doubt get more physical.” She smiled. “Let’s walk – it’ll ease the tension I feel.”

In truth, Corvus believed it would do them both good, but better to be self-deprecating than to point out another’s needs. She was learning…

It did not take long for the Ministry of State consular-class cruiser, Countess, to arrive on the planet Rhommamool. Emblazoned with the insignia of the Galactic Republic, it sailed safely into the space port where the Republic delegates would be met by a large regimen of local authorities who would escort them to the Government House (the planetary administrative branch of the Osarian-based government.) The city was currently in a state of chaos as criminals raged against the presence of the Republic and it took them several minutes to navigate the areas of the city that had been locked down.

Government House was by far the most beautiful and well-kept building in the city with its tall arched ceilings and marble floors and beautiful depictions of Osarian life. It was a representation of the wealth and power of Osarian, completely ignoring the poverty that plagued Rhommamool.

The delegates would be meeting with the de facto leader of the Rhommamoolians, the Rhommamool Exarch, Shor Ahara; and the official ruler of both Osarian and Rhommamool, Chancellor Arcturus Tartaka. The conference room was as richly decorated as the rest of Government House with a long dark wood table in the middle of the room. On one side sat the Rhommamoolian delegation and on the other was the Osarian delegation. In the center were several chairs for the Republic.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tensions between Rhommamool and Osarian had reached a head as the two planets neared. Both planets were technically ruled by the wealthy Osarians, but Rhommamool united primarily under the Mayor of Redhaven. Now the Rhommamool were calling for independence from Osarian and the Osarians couldn't comprehend why and were now readying a fleet to march on Rhommamool. As violence and hostilities increased, both sides were pointing fingers and had called on the Republic to intervene, each believing the Republic would unilaterally support their cause.
Cecily was still recovering from the recent attempt on her life by the One Sith little under a week prior on the planet Onderon, where a lightsaber was plunged through her abdomen. Fortunately, the saber had missed her vital organs, but she was still technically in recovery, having refused to stay in rehab past the minimum recommended period. Now, more than ever, she was determined to demonstrate her strength and the strength of the Republic.
Her pace was not quite as brisk as she strode up the grand halls of Government House, flanked at four corners by the Senate Guard, still her step was elegant and her head was held high as she came to the door of the conference room. She had carefully selected her robes to reflect the might of the Republic and her own power within its institution. Her torso was armored in large obsidian scales ringed with gold under which a simple black gown hung to the floor. Around her shoulders, an elegant velvet cape of royal purple accented in thread-of-gold, gave her form a more impressive silhouette. Her jewelry and hair were simple, two small golden bulbs hung from either ear lobe while her hair was weaved into a tight bun on top of her head. She looked more like a military commander than a diplomat... and that's exactly what she wanted.
Two local guardsman opened the large double doors to the chamber where both leaders would stand to show their respect. "Please, be seated," she said before they had fully left their chairs and both happily obliged.
"Your Excellency, I am elated to see you have recovered from the treacherous attack on Onderon.. and my deepest condolences for the loss of your King, truly your presence does us great honor," the Chancellor, a male Osarian, richly dressed in white and gold robes, piped up from one side of the table. He was very well spoken, enunciating his words carefully in the distinct Osarian accent.
"Good to see you on your feet, Minister... and thrice curse the gash who dunnit, excusin' my language," the Mayor, a female Rhommamoolian, dressed in a simple, but well made tan frock, chimed. Her accent was similar, but much less refined than the Chancellor, who cringed at her crude choice of words.
Cecily winced as she lowered herself into the most central chair, covering with a warm smile to them both as they spoke. She was neither more impressed by the diction of the Chancellor, nor was she offended by the crassness of the Mayor. She humbly acknowledge their words with a bow of her head and a smile.
"I thank you both for your kind words," she said simply, "in these difficult times, we must all remain vigilant of the darkness that seeks to divide us... or in my case, kill us." Her jest was received well by both leaders, who smiled in return.
"So, perhaps we should start by discussing what exactly has brought us all here today?" she said, glancing briefly between the two and waiting for one of them to speak.
Rank:
Iron Chancellor [Essentially the elected monarch of Osarian, their power is checked only by the Osarian Parliament.]
General Overview:
He is a snobby, entitled, and stubborn old man from one of the richest families on Osarian. He believes that the Rhommamoolians need Osarian rule to civilize their people and maintain order on the planet and thinks they are too barbaric to govern themselves. He sees the subservience of the Rhommamoolians as payment for Osarian's role as their leaders.
He believes that the Republic will side with Osarian and force the Rhommamoolians to submit to their rule.
Rank:
Mayor of Redhaven [Elected by the people of Redhaven, through common practice as the only government official elected by the Rhommamoolians, the Mayor has become the de facto leader of her species.]
General Overview:
Honest to a fault, the Mayor is the foil of the Chancellor. She is warm hearted, open-minded, and believes strongly that her people should be allowed to govern themselves. However, she is also incredibly aggressive toward Osarians and believes they should be punished for their years of mistreating the Rhommamoolians.
She believes that the Republic will side with her and give Rhommamool its independence.
"Batta-lion, atten-tion!" Sergeant Major Marcus Foster roared.
The Republic soldiers that had come along, including his Commandos, snapped immediately to attention, rifles cracking against their shoulder plates. As for the few thousand volunteer and militia forces, they sluggishly and sloppily shouldered their flimsy weaponry. Some of them carried swords and spears while their more experienced and wealthier brothers-in-arms toted archaic models of slugthrowers and other projectile launchers.
This planet was poor and nobody around felt like paying taxes to fund a military, especially when they could barely afford the clothes they wore and the measly scraps of food and resources they managed to buy. Things were harsh here.
The stark contrast between the armies couldn't be anymore different. Clad in cannon-resistant armor, adorned in shield belts and carrying interchangeable weapon systems, the Republic soldiers were armored from head-to-toe and looked more like battle droids than actual human beings. Especially Pappy and his three Dreadguard brothers, who stood even taller than the rest of them, wore heavier armor, and carried the weight of an entire sovereign nation on their shoulders.
"You are all here for one reason, and one reason alone; to defend your home. I don't know where you came from, how you ended up here, or why, but you are my men this very moment." He paused to glance at the ranks of "officers" in the Rhommamoolian army. "Do I make myself clear?"
A chorus of, "Yes, Sergeant Major," rang out in the arid air.
All except for one man, a Gran. He stepped forward with a vibrospear cradled in his arms and defiance in his eyes. "Why should we follow you? You have done nothing for us and all you want is power so you c'n take the metals of this place n' then leave." The Gran shook with anger and a few heads nodded in support, "I don't want to serve under any man who refuses to recognize that - I've got a wife and kids that I work to support everyday. I don't wanna die for no tin man."
Marcus stepped off of his little podium and removed his helmet.
"Oh brother, not this story again." Miranda chirped to herself, still in the helmet and away from Pappy's ears. But he still heard it.
The Dreadguard came to halt before the Gran dissenter, easily towering over him. Blue eyes peered down into a trio of rebellious, dark eyes. "I watched my wife and daughter be slaughtered by the One Sith. I've seen grown men cry for their mothers, I've seen men plead for their brothers to end their suffering. Your suffering here on this world is nothing compared to what I've seen." The dry air caught in his throat for a moment. "If you aren't ready to die for your home; no, if you aren't ready to die so that your children may live on, then I will."
Marcus glanced at the small assortment of Republic soldiers behind him. "No - we will."
Lilin landed her ship outside the capital city of the planet, just to be sure. If the city was truly overridden with criminals, there was no doubt she would set herself and perhaps the whole mission in danger if she decided to land right into them. She had no idea if there were other people from the Republic around but she would also not try to contact them yet. She wanted to fight alone -- it had always been that way and would never change, at least that's what she thought.
She walked out of her ship and took a deep breath of the planet's air before she would set her steps towards the city. It was going to be a rough mission, she could feel that inside. Her sense in the Force was not the best, but she did understand if there was a fight going to happen.
She stood still for another moment and came up with a better idea. The journey inside the capital would be too long and she did have a speeder along with her so it would be a lot more logical to use that. Even though she'd never ever driven one of such vehicles herself and did not have a clue of how to control it.
Her feet took her back inside the ship to come out a moment later with the speeder. Ugh, she'd have to find a way to get to the city with that...
Good job by so far, everybody! :)
Alyona opened her eyes and glanced at Corvus as she approached. She joined her Master at a brusque pace, listening to what Corvus had to say. Alyona considered everything she'd been briefed on regarding the Osarian/Rhommamool conflict. Currently, diplomatic talks were underway between the ruling Osarians and the sovereignty-seeking Rhommamoolians. Alyona was struggling to abate her personal views in favor of the directives handed down to them by the Jedi Council, and her urge to fight was geared toward the blue-skinned rulers of the system. Without the history of oppression and exploitation that the Osarians carried over their red-skinned neighbors, Alyona would have easily supported the effort for a single government representing the two peoples. Yet that burden was already rested atop the Osarian's shoulders and there seemed to be no sign of the government elevating the Rhommamoolians into an equitable place within their society.
So what choice did that leave Alyona? Corvus spoke of making arrests, for indeed it appeared the Rhommamoolians had established a criminal insurgency of sorts in the system, though Alyona could not fault them as long as the oppression remained. Her only disagreement with the Rhommamoolians was their choice of targets and their zealous aggression toward the Osarians in general. Surely the entire Osarian population was not responsible for the treatment of the Rhommamoolians, and yet how did one instill a message and fight for independence without first attaining a voice?
For the time being, Alyona did as her Master had taught her: She opened herself to and trust in the Force itself.
As they walked, Corvus spoke freely – as she invariably did. Sometimes she spoke of what was on her Padawan’s mind – other times it merely raised a subject that hadn’t been discussed. But either way, it was all part of the training.
“One of the beauties of the galaxy is the myriad of cultures. Even within the Republic, there are so many and so varied. As are local laws.”
“One thing I always found hard to reconcile when I studied was the Jedi’s duty to honour the law. The local law. On a planet where slavery is legal, we can neither arrest people nor show our dislike of their way of life.”
“So when we travel on diplomatic missions, it is with a clear brief. We are not here to judge. We may report our findings and spark a debate, and I can see that being part of our duty. But to take sides in any dispute is always a decision for the Senators. We are, by definition, non-political.”
“In a sense I wonder what it must be like to be a Silver Jedi. Given the freedom to choose which cause to fight, which to defend, which side to join.”
She looked her Padawan in the eyes. “And I suspect a burden. To choose a side that ends up being the dictator, or the oppressor. And I am not suggesting we should be grateful for abdicating that responsibility. But rather we should focus on what we do know. What we are good at. And allow the politicians to do their thing.”
She sighed. “Is that perfect? Of course not. But I can see the sense in it at least.”
“And…” she smiled warmly, “As if you weren’t expecting it, what are your thoughts? On the subject in general and the matter at hand.”
Strictly speaking, Nubica hadn’t broken any rules. This was not an Invasion and she’d travelled with a Jedi Master and a Padawan. OK…she wasn’t in the same ship, but she’d been close to them in space.
And she’d parked her ship alongside theirs hadn’t she?
But when they went off to do whatever Jedi Masters and their Padawans do, she headed for the smell of action. She looked around. This was an impoverished mining world.
Mostly desert with red sands and clearly a lack of water. She patted her training saber for reassurance. It wouldn’t cut things up like a regular saber but she could give people very nasty bruises if need be.
So she headed for the Square of Hopeful Redemption. It was massive and was apparently once a spaceport…and a place where droids were stoned. With rocks she presumed, as opposed to being high on spice. The entry in the guide book wasn’t very clear.
The centre of the square was a pit, over thirty metres wide and ten deep. Currently it contained a large group of citizens and standing over them, on the perimeter of the pit, were half a dozen criminals with blaster rifles and lots of stubble. That’s how you could tell they were the bad guys.
"Yes, well, as you know, Minister Demici, for centuries the people of Osarian have provided protection and looked out for the welfare of Rhommamool.. at great personal cost..." The soft spoken Chancellor began, very matter of factly, though he wasn't far into this deeply flawed implication before the Mayor of Redhaven was on her feet and pounding on the table.
"I'll be bleedin' hanged! If by welfare you mean SLAVERY! It's slavery 'swat it is" she howled and the Chancellor smirked, as if he had just won some small victory by provoking the fiery woman. However, Cecily herself was a fiery woman and she could see through the Chancellor's guile.
"Peace!" The skilled diplomat said coolly, raising her hands for silence and was pleasantly surprised when the red-skinned woman complied, albeit with a few rude phrases muttered under her breath.
"Now, Chancellor, we acknowledge that the people of Osarian... your government see the labor of the people of Rhommamool to be a form of tax for the services your government provides," Cecily said, acknowledging the Chancellor briefly before turning to the Mayor, "and Mayor, we acknowledge that what Rhommamool does not feel that the services provided by the Osarian government is not adequate."
"Ya know they dont let us vote," the crass woman hissed, though she seemed to generally agree with Cecily's summary of the circumstances. This was on detail Cecily had not been made privy to and it honestly came as a shock to her.
"I did not," she said simply, though her eyes spoke volumes of compassion for the Mayor's plight, "they also feel they are unfairly taxed without any sort of formal representation in the government, Chancellor, do you acknowledge this."
"Well, I mean, really... how do you expect me to... honestly I..." the once very well composed gentleman seemed a little flustered now as Cecily turned her eyes on him.
"Chancellor?" Cecily's intent was clear... to scold. The Republic would not abide slave labor within their sphere of influence and that is what this seemed to amount to.
"I admit that perhaps government is a little unrepresentative of the population of Rhommamool, but as you can see they have quite an accomplished representative here," he recovered well, as most politicians did, but it was clear he meant this in jest as he had no great love for the Rhommamoolian Mayor or her people. Cecily knew now that this man would be her obstacle...
Criminals had begun to run amok, and as was typically necessary, the Republic had responded by sending in soldiers and the Jedi Order to try and neutralize the threat before it destabilized the planet more than it already had. Kian, along with a number of other Jedi, had been dispatched to help deal with the criminal element. Kian hadn't arrived with the others, however, as he had been away from the academy and had just arrived in the system.
Instead Kian now lingered in the Shadows.....a place he often was to be found. Kian moved silently, his Jedi Shade Robes pulled around him and his hood up. The photoreceptors in the robes altered the color to aid in the camouflaging of the robes. Right now they were black and, even if Kian wasn't using the force to move silently and hide himself, the robes would have aided in the hiding of his presence.
"This is Kian Karr, reporting in." Kian said over the secure GR comm-lines. "Where am I needed?"
Ydros sighed and moved away from his location. The mission was not of too great importance, mainly because he knew the Republic as busier with fighting the One Sith than occupying new planets. But there were many people there and he'd heard of many great Jedi joining in to gain dominance over the twin planets of Osarian and Rhommamool. It was difficult to assume whether they would succeed at that or not, so the hooded figure would not make any assumptions so early in the mission.
He walked closer and closer to the ship he'd arrived with, even though he didn't think he would manage to fly away with it. He would most likely just get a speeder from it and get to the capital city as fast as he could.
Well, that was actually a very good idea.
His steps turned faster and faster as he progressed towards the ship. He would go to the capital and keep an eye on the situation from there. After all, he was already being waited for.
He wouldn't want to enrage them, would he?
"You would ask of us to forget the past?"
"How can we ignore transgressions against us?!
"Who are you, an outsider, to question right and wrong here?!"
"Kark off!"
"We don't need you here, Jedi!"
Those and many more expletives were thrown in a singular direction until a loud, metallic clanging cut through the cacophony of shouting voices. As the gonging repeated itself, the sound amplified and drowned the people out entirely. Those yelling found persisting useless and, after working off their steam, gradually quieted themselves and returned to their seats in the circular chamber. A ringing remained for some time, but it too gradually dissipated.
Tyl wasn't entirely sure if the ringing she heard at that time had been residual or if the tone was still audibly bouncing around the room, but she soon found that thought answered when the old man behind her spoke out through his own amplification system. "There will be order," the speaker of the House, his voice fragile despite the conviction in his eyes. Aeko Noullee, was the old man's name. He was one of the most senior members of Osarion's Representative Council, and a man who commanded the respect of others. The metal bars he had just previously struck together ensured that respect if anything got out of hand.
Without glancing at the Jedi, he motioned to her and addressed her. "Madame Knight. Start again."
The Jedi Knight bowed slowly in reverence and thanks. "Thank you, Representative Noullee." As she rose, her eyes once more scanned the crowd of elected officials that made up Osarion's legislature. Though nearly all of the governance of Osarion ran through Chancellor Tartaka, the Representative Council were the elected officials of the people, tasked with proposing and upholding laws and defending the interests of the society as a whole. While their executive power was little, they were not incapable. The small contingent of Osarion military officials in attendance were evidence of that.
"It is not my intention to question the Osarion people for any actions that they may take." Tyl's amplified voice was once again the focal point of the gathering. With so many eyes on her, most of them considering her a hostile presence if not an irritating one, the Kaminoan knew she must choose her words wisely. "As you say, I am not of the world, and I do not have the perspective of one who resides here. What I do share with all of you is life. We are all, at this moment, living and breathing members of this galaxy. My purpose here is to protect those that are living. No more, no less."
Alyona frowned, shocked at what Corvus had said in regards to slaving worlds, and somewhat less than accepting of everything else she had shared. Even so, Alyona had studied the laws and codes that governed a Jedi's behaviors within the Galactic Republic, and she understood them well enough. She did not agree, and she struggled to see the sense in much of it, though she decided that at this point in her life she was a student, and a student trusted in their teachers and mentors. Corvus had faith in a system that barred its Jedi from using their wisdom and might in ways that could directly affect the lives of others in positive ways. She did not see the sense in that now, but Alyona did what she had promised to do and had faith in her Master. This meant also having faith in the same system Corvus had placed hers; a difficult task considering her nature and age, but not an impossible one.
"I'm not sure I want to share my thoughts on this one, Master," Alyona muttered as they stepped into the city beyond. "If this matter lies inherently with the Senate alone, then my opinion does not matter, and I suspect it is rather too brash and full of the lack of experience and arrogance of youth to be of much insight to you, Master."
Alyona wrinkled her nose and bit at her lower lip for a moment as they continued walking, avoiding Corvus' gaze for the time being. At length, they walked in silence, as Alyona gathered her thoughts and realised that she could not remain objective and acknowledge the plight of those suffering at the same time. The two were mutually exclusive in her mind, and she felt that doing the right thing was impossible as long as one was remaining objective.
Then what, if anything, did objectivity offer? Alyona wasn't sure at this time. She attempted to consider what might happen if the Rhommamoolians attained their independence. The mining corporations, owned and conducted by Osarians, would fall into the hands of the currently oppressed, few of whom even knew how to read Basic, nonetheless maintain an entire mining company. The mines themselves would run for a time, before the instability inevitably led to a withdrawal of investment assets, which would in turn cause the mines themselves to shut down. They would perhaps reopen, after a time, and the ores and materials produced sold at open market, though the dissolution of the labor corporations themselves that once negotiated for fair prices on a competitive playing field would guarantee little return for the miners themselves. Eventually, the Rhommamoolians would be unable to afford crucial resources and would have to attain them from the Osarians, which were likely to lack solvency themselves after losing the income of their mining operations to the Rhommamoolians. In the end, both would either end up at war over resources rather than rights, or would be forced to appeal to the Republic for resources, which would be provided on the tax payer's credits and likely fall below the actual needs of the people of both worlds.
Alyona frowned as her train of thought came full circle and she saw herself standing in the streets of Redhaven once more, years down the road. She was much older now, with a fuller mind. She wore her hair in a different way, and she was garbed in Corvus' robes. She walked down the streets of the city with a padawan of her own, passing down the same thoughts and beliefs she was hearing now.
We're on a road to no-where, Alyona realised sadly. All castles crumble, all lands are washed away in the end by the seas of time. Still, it wasn't an entirely depressing thought, and it somewhat bolstered her faith in the system itself. For she saw but one possibility, and the future was ever in motion. Possibilities were just that, possibilities. Nothing was set, and she could only hold hope for those that suffered while the powers that be decided what course of action was best for the people of Osarian and Rhommamool. Alyona shared these thoughts and perspectives with her Master, once she had them better worded in her mind, then waited to hear Corvus' reaction to her own feelings on the matter.
