- Demographics: Majority Shi'ido, some other alien species. While there is no significant xenophobia, it is generally understood that the city was built for the Shi'ido refugees. As such, there is little reason for those unrelated to them to live in Maranatha.
- Wealth: Low - Most residents of Maranatha are refugees escaping danger and hardship. Government-run systems put in place to get them back on their feet ensure that most people have livable salaries, but many Shi'ido seek financial independence rather than relying on state welfare.
- Stability: Medium; the clan system is still in full effect, with various groups running things behind the scenes. A few are involved in crime or connected to criminal elements.
- Freedom & Oppression: Law & order is not as lax as it was in Camp Spyridon, but crime remains something of an issue, mainly in the form of gang activity.
- Description: "The city was already beginning to take shape, though much of it was well-camouflaged, blending in with the jungle around it." Maranartha was designed by Shi'ido city planners and architects rather than Alderaanians, so it has more of a Shi'ido look. Shi'ido like to make their settlements look like they're part of the natural landscape. Only the most important/high status buildings stand out, as this is traditionally a sign of power in that you don't need to hide and blend in to avoid being seen by Lao-mon's predators. Unlike the previous refugee camps, this city was built to last, with sturdy and attractive structures.
POINTS OF INTEREST
- Government Headquarters - A large building which houses the main governmental offices of Maranatha, as well as serving as a town hall/meeting place for important city officials.
- Theater - A magnificent auditorium where live performances are held, mainly of Shi'idese plays and operas. The theater provides an opportunity to preserve their culture, as well as a place for artists to introduce new material to the people and the galaxy at large.
- Residential Areas - Scattered throughout the settlement, these neighborhoods are standardized, meaning that most of the houses look alike. The main difference from one neighborhood to the next is in the level of crime found there.
- Hoole Family Residence - Located in one of the safer residential areas is the home of the surviving members of Clan Hoole.
- The Grove - A scenic patch of untamed jungle used as a venue for special events such as weddings, adoptions, and other ceremonies.
Medium; The city is under the authority of the Alderaanian planetary government and is subject to its laws. However, they do have some leeway, which the clans take full advantage of. In the event of an invasion by a foreign power, the inhabitants would be in the same position as any other Alderaanian citizen.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
Created through the combined efforts of Inanna Harth, a Shi'ido diplomat, and Count Alicio Organa, the city of Maranatha follows a similar pattern of other refugee cities such as Sanctuary City and Calabiyau. Maranatha was meant to house Shi'ido refugees fleeing the conquest of Lao-mon by the Brotherhood of the Maw during the Second Great Hyperspace War. With the end of the war, however, most of the population has yet to return to their homeworld. The thriving city they built within the rainforests of Alderaan will remain for generations to come, even if only as a reminder of the dark days which made its existence necessary.
