Faction Lift Me Up [THR/TJO/Do-Gooders]

Andromeda pursed her lips thoughtfully and then nodded in response to his suggestion. "Good idea," she said. "They should be returning the cart once it's unloaded, That should give us some time to check the footage. Can we pull it up while your AI does its thing?" She tapped a few keys on the terminal, navigating through to the security interface.

She called up the footage and was puzzled to be confronted with a black screen. She leaned closer, brushing dust off the screen. "What in blazes...?" she murmured. No, the screen wasn't black. It was blocked; there was one corner of the screen showing some light, little dust motes floating there, but otherwise it was basically useless. She tried to scroll, but apparently there was just the one camera on this network. "It's -- " Andromeda frowned and looked up, turning to scan the ceiling until she spotted it: one crate on the top of the power packs shelf stack. The only shelf so stacked. The only crate so high. Blocking the only camera in the warehouse.

"That's not coincidence," Andy told Connel grimly. Someone had blocked the camera. There was no way that was a coincidence. "Run it back. Maybe we'll see who put the crate there?"

She crossed her arms, watching as the time started counting backward, occasionally glancing over her shoulder at the offending crate. "You think we should move it? Or just let them keep on thinking they've pulled one over on us?" She leaned over the screen again, resting her hand on the edge of the terminal to brace herself.

"Many times," she said simply. "We're fortunate to have what resources that we do here."

Xiaoyu’s gaze lingered on the med-scanner as it hummed to life. Efficient. Prepared. The child would be stable for now. Xiaoyu inclined her head slightly, meeting the other woman’s eyes with calm certainty. “Fortunate, yes. And fortunate that we have capable hands to put them to use.” Her voice was soft, measured; but carried enough weight that it invited acknowledgment.

"Sounds as though we've our work cut out for us."

Xiaoyu allowed herself a faint, almost imperceptible nod. “It does. But one step at a time. There is always someone who can benefit from the next careful move.”

A low rumble interrupted them, drawing a small, wry lift to Xiaoyu’s lips. “Ah,” she said evenly, glancing downward. “Even the body insists we do not neglect ourselves.”

"There is," she waved toward the tent flap nearest to them. "Straight down the midway and to your left. We can't do our jobs on an empty stomach."

Xiaoyu inclined her head, acknowledging the direction. “Understood.” Then, her tone shifted slightly, calm and precise. “Before I go, I should introduce myself properly. I am Xiaoyu.” She let the name hang briefly in the air. “Come find me in the kitchen if there’s anything you need from me.” She paused, before continuing, “don’t forget to eat too…”

How hypocritical, she mused at her own comment. Turning to leave, she glanced back at Cora with a acknowledging smile.

The midway beyond the tent was alive with controlled chaos; volunteers hauling crates, refugees huddled on benches, the smell of cooking broth drifting through dust and smoke. Xiaoyu moved with quiet purpose, weaving between hands and feet with the ease of someone used to observing and acting in tandem.

She glanced toward the triage tents. “If Cora comes looking,” she said, voice calm and measured, “tell her I haven’t wandered far. And that she should eat before returning to the patients.”

Xiaoyu couldn’t help but noticing Feng in front of the soups. She walked over quite cautiously, not sure how to be the first to speak. She was never good at social interactions, even less so when she was the one who had to actively start the engagement. Instead she stood awkwardly in front of her, somewhat creepily.

Yeah, my connection doesn’t interrupt functionality.

The footage only confirmed what he had thought, these were petty thieves who had found their “honey hole”, whatever that is. He looked up as she did and was not impressed. It was not a negative of the populace of this town but rather a reflection of the environment they inhabited. The town seemed to breed a sense of desperation, with its run-down structures and lack of opportunities. These thieves were merely products of their circumstances, exploiting what little they could find to survive in a place that offered little else. It bothered him that they were destroying their own potential for growth.

“Move what?” Spouted a voice from the other side of the warehouse.

“Did you find something?” Another voice. It was the two who left, coming back with a loaded cart. Connel just looked back at them and shrugged. Then he whispered to Andy through the Force…

~Play along…~

We found a problem, but cannot address it because it is now evidence” and cannot be tampered with at the moment. It’s not that he did not trust these two individuals, but security was at a premium right now. Even if they did nothing involving this, the less people that knew about the idea of letting the thieves think they had pulled a fast one, the better.

Liana focused herself on holding down the fort, dispensing soup to the needy while the others helped throughout the kitchen area. It made for a streamlined process that kept them from getting overwhelmed.

"So what do you guys like to do with yourselves when you're not helping out?"

How to answer that question. "Uhhh," Liana shrugged, "I work in the Senate." She glanced back at Feng, deciding they might as well pass the time with conversation, "How about you?"

"That's cool it sound like you prioritise your well being." Feng acknowledged of Vif's activities.

"Oh nice the Senate! I was recently attached to Senator Ayumi's entourage, apparently for extra protection, but I think some Master somewhere just wanted me to be exposed more to how the Republic is run. She's really cool though."

"Maybe I'll see you around?"
Feng asked hopefully. Despite being a naturally cheerful person she didn't have many friends and was hoping to change that. She also hoped Liana wasn't a sworn political enemy of Ayumi. That would be awkward.

Feng noticed the woman approaching the food service counter hesitatantly. It was understandable, some people felt awkward asking for free food, as if they didn't deserve it or weren't sure if they didn't ask in just the right way the food would suddenly be denied to them. Food they desperately needed. Though admittedly this person looked more like a fellow volunteer than a refugee judging by the state of their clothes.

"Hi!" Feng beamed a smile at her. "Would you like some food? I'm Feng BTW and this is Vif and Liana."

"There's plenty to go around, no need to be shy."
Feng hefted a bowl of food towards the newcomer.

["I work in the Senate."]

He was in the midst of currently drying off a bowl with a rag, taking a moment to briefly glance around. He noticed Feng Huang Feng Huang start talking to someone else, Xiaoyu Xiaoyu . Staring blankly for a few moments, before there was a slight raise of a hand, as a wave. Before, going back to working on the dishes.

Though, he gave a brief look over towards Liana Organa Liana Organa . "You said you work in the Senate. What is it that you do. Are you a diplomat, assistant...?" Just more idle talk while they all worked.

Andromeda allowed her head to swivel toward Connel Vanagor Connel Vanagor for a moment and she gave a subtle nod of her head to indicate she understood. She turned her attention back to the men with the cart. "Yeah. Nothing to worry about." Why was the cart loaded? What was the stuff they had on it now? She tried not to let her brow furrow, and turned to Connel again. "We ought to get out of their way and let them update the inventory," she said, nodding to the terminal. "And there are some people we need to check in with over at the camp anyway."

She pushed away from the terminal, removing her credentials card from the slot, and headed toward the door the men had just wheeled the cart through. She didn't stop, barely slowed, but let her gaze linger on the cart's contents, but at that speed she still couldn't see what the labels said. "If you need anything, give me a shout on the com," Andy told them, all good nature and comradery.

She thought the whole thing was very odd.

Outside, she took a few steps, then stopped and backtracked, her steps slower, soft, stealthy. Andromeda pressed herself to the wall outside the door, listening in. ~What do you think they're up to?~ she telepath'd to Connel as she strained to hear.

Connel said nothing else to them, but indeed got out of their way. The girl was the nice one, he was the “Schutta”, this was a time when his internal shyness(and his gear) worked in his favor. The image of the large silent bruiser worked if he needed it to, and while Connel did not want to as this was meant to be a relief experience, he would not hesitate to act.

Walking out with her, he dropped his UAD on one of the crates, no need to let it fly, it could sit there and film. He felt a sense of relief as they left the area, the weight of his role momentarily lifted. The UAD would capture anything important while he focused on the moment, ready to step in if needed, blending his reserved nature with the situation's demands.

Pulling out the datapad connected to the video feed, he gave her the viewer. ~Don’t know… but you taking your credentials seemed to throw them off. I want to know who they are talking to on comms… nooooot happy….~

Katherine chuckled, remembering that day very well. Both Padawans knew of their respective Master’s competitive streak, especially when it was against one another. “And I remember Kahlil’s. A mix of disappointment and pride. On one hand, he didn’t get a win over Valery, but on the other, I think he was proud we were able to get one over on them.

Thoughts about the Nobles had a question on the redhead’s lips, but it seemed Colette had read her mind, beating her to the punch.

Hearing that they were keeping busy, Katherine couldn’t help but shake her head a little, smiling. “I’d expect no less. But it’s good to hear the family are doing well, after everything that's happened.

They had been on Katherine’s mind since she had set out on her journey here. Reading up on news, and messages she had missed. Everest and Tigris were gone, and despite only having read their message recently, Katherine felt she already knew long before. So it was only inevitable that she’d wonder about the family that had looked after her.

So it warmed her heart to know the Nobles were doing fine, still actively but within the shadows now. Very fitting for Valery.

And how have you been?” Katherine asked.

“Well, we’re the last big Jedi Order and the galaxy is looking darker every day.” Colette smiled. “But, that also means the darker things get, the less we need to shine to be seen.”

She looked out at the busy crowds and then let her gaze fall back to Katherine once more.

“We would—” Colette stopped herself, raised her brows and tilted her head for a moment. “I would love to see you return to the fold, but I understand if you can’t do that right now.”

“It’s not a small ask to just come back as if things aren’t different.”

The woman at the counter paused just short of stepping fully forward, shoulders drawn in slightly as if uncertain whether she belonged in the line or behind it. Xiaoyu watched the small shift in posture, the careful glance toward the bowls, the quiet calculation that passed across the stranger’s face. Feng's voice broke the silence.
"Hi!" Feng beamed a smile at her. "Would you like some food? I'm Feng BTW and this is Vif and Liana."

The green-haired girl nodded her head at Feng Huang Feng Huang and then noticing Vif Hozz Vif Hozz wave a hesitant hand to acknowledge her, she would nod to him as well. It was then that she would find Feng already having prepared a bowl of food for her, the steam from the broth hitting her nostrils, answering the comment the other woman had made about having plenty of food with a loud rumble of her stomach. Xiaoyu blushed a bright crimson, instinctively casting her eyes to the ground but accepting the bowl sheepishly. It was not like her to show such weakness, the girl mused.

"I'd love to get some for some of the volunteers that are tending to the wounded..." her voice came out raspy as she thought about Corazona. In the off chance that Corazona von Ascania Corazona von Ascania was anything like her and didn't notice time passing, she wanted to make sure the triage didn't end up having a volunteer become a patient. She wondered how she was going to carry all the bowls to the other end of the hallway. "I'm simply afraid that the others might not know when to heed to their body's request for nourishment...." she added quickly.

"Oh yeah, she's cool," Liana recognized the name Ayumi. She had offered aide to Alderaan while they were fighting to gain membership in the Republic, "Maybe we will," They probably already had, and just didn't realize it. Lots of faces and names to remember in the Senate as it is.

"You said you work in the Senate. What is it that you do. Are you a diplomat, assistant...?"

"I'm the junior ambassador. For Alderaan." Liana answered plainly. She wasn't eager to make a highlight of herself or her position, but not to the point that she was going to lie about it when asked, "I'm mainly there to learn. Get experience. The lead Ambassador handles most of the nitty gritty, but I try to help where I can." Liana glanced over at Vif, examining him more deliberately now, "How about you? You're a Jedi right?" She was well acquainted with the Order, it was usually pretty easy to tell when someone was a Jedi or not.

Another woman approached, seemingly not one of the refugees. Feng took the initiative on speaking to her, while Liana continued serving out soup. She peered down into the pot, which was running low on contents, "Hey, you got another batch about ready?" She asked Feng.

He gave a few nods as Liana Organa Liana Organa . Junior Ambassador for Alderaan, looking to get experience. Much like he is. And, speaking of...

["How about you? You're a Jedi right?"]

"You are correct." Giving a small nod. Taking a moment to organize a few cleaned dishes, before facing towards her properly. "I am a Jedi Padawan. I am...without a master at the moment, but I go where I can. Much for the same reason as you, for experience."

He resumed scrubbing one of bowls in the sink. "If I am to be a Jedi Knight, then I must have all the experience and knowledge needed for it to happen. Such as this."

And even the smallest of lights are capable of illuminating the greatest. To instill hope into those smothered by darkness. Even those that are furthest from us.

A sense of responsibility and duty, against what felt like an overwhelming tide that threatened to sow chaos across the galaxy. But there was also a sense of optimism, despite the current state of things.

Colette hadn’t answered directly, but her words had said enough to the Valkyrie.

Well, I guess it’s a good thing that’s exactly why I’m here.” Katherine replied, glancing over to Colette, a small grin on her face. Though it quickly faded beneath a more serious expression.

I had my time away, to think, to meditate, to refocus. To come to terms with what had happened, and vow to do better. To be better.

Andromeda let her gaze linger on Connel's masked visage for a moment, then took the viewer and held it up to look.

~I took the credentials because I want to know if whoever did this cloned my card or stole it.~ She watched the viewer curiously. The two workers didn't seem to be up to anything nefarious. But as she watched, she saw them open the crates they had brought back. The miner's folded her other arm across her midsection, studying the footage as it relayed the pictures from inside. "What the devil," she whispered, her voice breaking off as she squinted. "Does this thing have a zoom?"

She groped around the edges, twisted here, pushed there, until the view got a little clearer and closer up.

"They're taking something out of the crate -- " Andromeda hissed, nearly dropping the viewer. " -- it's one of the applicators! But -- that's weird. They look... surprised. Surprised to see it. Why..."

She fell silent as one of the men glanced toward the door, then began moving toward it. Andromeda let her hand take her lightsaber from her belt... but then he pulled the door shut and the man returned to the pallet. She watched as they removed the other applicator from another crate. The men seemed cautious. "Some kind of shell game?" she mused, as much to herself as to Connel.

Watching the two was educational, though truly not surprising. The proverbial boxes in his head were checking off as things happened from his perspective of the UAD’s playback. Connel was about to show her “zoom” when Andy figured it out on her own, good. He needed to see what would have taken his eyes away from them.

When she asked about a “shell game”, he shrugged. Maybe, but play back their initial reaction… something about that tells me that they might be involved in the theft but are pawns themselves… Sure enough, the look on the face of the one on the left was of desperation. Like they were going to be in the type of trouble that one who could not afford to be would be in…

See that? That tells me someone is pulling their strings forcefully… I have an idea… play along… and trust me… Without another word, he began closing the distance towards them, one of them glanced his way, then the other.

It was the reaction of the other that he focused on. “Why’re you squaring up?”

This seemed to spark the other. “What’s going on?”

Tell me the truth.

The one on the left. “I don’t know anything!”

Connel kept walking. I haven’t even asked anything. Now I KNOW you have something to hide.

“You’re a Jedi! You won’t do anything.” He retorted quickly.

“What are you doing Rev?” The other turned his attention quickly.

That was the moment Connel needed, he stepped to “Rev” who went to shove himbut Connel ducked under and behind, grabbing a hand, and in a blur had Rev in basically a Rear Naked Choke. The worker was fighting and struggling, but his face was turning red. His fellow, we’ll call him “Taln” was screaming… “What is WRONG with you? THIS IS CRAZY!”

“Let GO OF ME! You have rules!”

Connel just kept the grip and looked at Taln… Feel that “Rev”? Right now you are feeling the byproduct of cellular energy use. You’re starting to drift in and out of consciousness, your breathing is slowing and you can’t control it. Your eye movement is slowing down… your muscles are getting weak…

Your brain is trying to go into overdrive to fight it, because your body temperature is about to drop and your heartbeat is going to slow down. Pretty soon your breathing and heart rate reach their slowest, lowest levels.

He looked like he was choking Rev to death. That is what Connel wanted, but if any of them(Andromeda would) were paying attention, they would know he just explained the scientific steps to falling asleep. Rev would be fine, regardless.

“St… Stop this!”

“PLEASE!”

The only one keeping me from doing so is either of you telling us the truth.

~They’re in over their head… this way they don’t look like they just “went to the cops”...~

Andromeda watched with mounting alarm as Connel sprang into action. Her first impulse was to stop him. The men seemed as perplexed as she was seeing the missing supplies in those crates. And even if they were guilty -- guilty as sin, caught red-handed -- roughing them up wasn't necessarily the Jedi way, except as a last resort.

But instead, she watched.

And he noticed. The men seemed to be protesting a little too much. Connel wasn't hurting them. Well, until he started to choke Rev out. Andy looked into Connel's unfathomable dark visor and jammed her hands into her pockets, adopting a casual tone.

Connel was playing bad cop. Bad Jedi. Bad Jedi Cop. Andromeda, therefore, would need to play good Jedi Cop. She was cast in the role -- young, pretty-ish, smelling vaguely of jasmine, regular clothes and not an intimidating Jedi robe. ~Go with me on this,~ she thought at Connel. "All right," she said aloud, holding up a hand. "Ease up on him for a second. This could be all a misunderstanding. Ah-ah-ah! Don't do that."

Her gaze cut to Taln, who looked like he was trying to slip past her. She wrapped him in a gentle tug in the Force, keeping him place. "This is trouble for somebody. Is it trouble for you two? Or are you going to tell us who put you up to this?"

Thirty seconds later, they had a drop location for the supplies, somewhere on the outskirts of the camp, behind a waste processing center. A place nobody wanted to hang around. That made for good cover. Andromeda looked at Connel. ~What do you think? Cut them loose? Lock them up?~~

When she asked him about what he thought that they should do, his answer was simple. ~They’re in over their heads… I think they’re pawns… look at how scared they are. Let’s “flip” them~

To Connel, they clearly looked like they were not here to do damage or cause any strife. Their actions were too rigid. They were afraid. Perhaps they could help each other. ~Let’s let this play out. If they tell us what is going on, maybe we can get them to help us, so we can help them then. If not? Lock them up.~

Andromeda's gaze touched Connel's and she gave an almost imperceptible nod.

"I'm going to put you down," she told the man she had held in place with the Force. "You aren't going to run. We're going to talk about this, and if you tell me the truth you're going to be free to go and -- " Andromeda held up a finger, not quite a threat, but not quite not a threat either. " -- and this is critical, guys. You're not going to do this again. This place is a mess and it's a mess partially because of opportunists taking advantage. If you need food, we've got food. If you need medicine, we've got it. If you need help -- if someone's threatening you to get you to do this -- we've got this guy."

She hooked her thumb at Connel Vanagor Connel Vanagor and smiled tightly.

"Well, not him, specifically," Andromeda. said. "He'll have to go at some point. But the principle stands: there are Jedi here. We want to help. So -- are we all agreed, or...?"

The two men exchanged glances, then one after another nodded. Andromeda set the man down, and between the two of the men they spun their tale. A local crime boss who fancied herself large potatoes because she had several of the local constabulary in her pocket, one Ella Hicks, had somehow managed to get a copy of the manifest of the Jedi relief supplies and had used her power to order a little shopping list. She had given the men a credentials ripper, which they showed Andromeda. That was how they had stolen her credentials.

"It wasn't personal," Rev swore. "You were just -- "

"There?" Andromeda interjected, eyebrows lifting. Rev nodded sheepishly. Andromeda folded her arms. "Keep going." The drop, they said, was supposed to take place in a battered old drum that wouldn't look amiss at the drop site. The drop was supposed to be overnight that night. They got a few more details and that was that. Andromeda glanced at Connel and nodded. She thought they both understood what had to be done. "One more thing," she told the two men. "Why were you doing this? What does Hicks have over you?"

It transpired that Taln's sister -- Rev's wife -- had some kind of wasting illness, the medication for which was extortionately expensive. Hicks supplied it in exchange for their services in smuggling occasionally from the town's depot. Andromeda sighed. "Go over to the medical tent and talk to the healers there. Take your wife. Or your wife. Whosever wife it is, take her, and get her checked out. And -- gentlemen? Don't mention this. If Hicks doesn't show to the meet, we know where to find you."

When the men had gone, Andromeda turned to Connel. "Are you thinking what I'm thinking?"

”Clearly not useless…” Connel’s initial observation of Andromeda was meant to be complimentary, but after what he had just seen? After all he had watched her do? It was insulting(in the best possible way, it did not do her justice). ... this kid is good…

She was clearly already coming up with a plan as she listened to them telling about the ill wife. As he listened, to tell the truth, Connel was just getting angry. Not at them, but at the … well… not worth talking about. When they left, he knew what he wanted to do, “crash the party.”

This needed to be more nuanced and Andromeda was put in charge of these supplies, and he was assisting. So it was a matter of listening and waiting to see if their ideas aligned. Let’s do this…
