Public In the Heart of the Jungle at the Edge of Madness (High Republic, Jedi Order, Open to all)

New Cov, a border world between the Sith Empire and the High Republic. One that lived and existed at the faintest edge of light and prosperity. Though one wouldn't be able to tell by looking at it. No, New Cov was a world that had prepared itself for what would only be inevitable bloodshed and war. However, war was not the only danger to exist in this Galaxy. The Dark Side was a tempting mistress. Power, control, the almost certain illusion that you could bend the will of the force and the Galaxy to serve you and your desires. It was temptation and seduction at its highest caliber.

It had wormed its way onto this planet. Reports had come down from the various local authorities that were cycled up to regional and eventually to system wide that a small Sith Cult or Dark Side Cult had been brewing in the darkest parts of the planet. Normally this would be harmless, a couple of punk kids messing with runes and tomes and professing their allegiance with dark forces before they got drunk and fooled around. This was not that unfortunately. Which is why it was kicked up to the Jedi.

If reports were to believed, people had gone missing. While it wasn't uncommon for people to go missing in a jungle, this was different. People had been taken from their beds in the night. They had been taken while going to do simple chores. Their belongings just left without signs of struggle. People report seeing creatures in the mist of the jungle, strange animals twisted and mutated by what feels to be an encroaching sense of dread and doom. All of it pointed towards some kind of group casting dark side based rituals somewhere in the jungle brush. Causing havoc and preparing for the arrival of their masters.

This was the first time Loutaro had left Naboo. His first mission out for the Jedi. The task was simple for a Padawan. Confirm and verify reports of a cult. Interview witnesses, scout the terrain, find concrete proof that this was happening and the dark side was at play here. He had been dispatched with others from the High Republic. A small team of soldiers and a few droids and personnel. He was aware that the local villages had hired on various mercenaries and troubleshooters as well, however he paid it no mind. He was aware of the custom of hiring mercenaries and muscle from his time living on his families farm. Banditos, raiders, looters, whatever you wanted to call them. It always helped having a few guns around.

Breaking atmosphere, his shuttle pilot put down the ship deep within the jungles of New Cov where the reports had been coming in from. A small town if you could even call it that with a landing space that amounted to a clearing of cut trees and burnt and churned earth to keep vegetation from growing back. The loading ramp opened and Loutaro was hit with the full concentrated power of jungle humidity and sun.

Waiting for him was a rather rotund older human man in what could be described as fanciful clothing. Around him were several armed men and a protocol droid. A welcoming party perhaps?

"Greetings esteemed officials of the High Republic and Jedi Order. Welcome to Rethero our humble little town. I am Mayor Chieftain Delegate whatever you wish to call me I am in charge and my name is Ghelbert. Please if there's anything you need for your investigation inform me." The man gave a courteous bow and allowed the delegation to proceed.

Loutaro remained silent as the droids and soldiers began to move forward and speak. The din of the conversation faded into the background as he looked out into the dense jungle. Something here felt wrong. It was as if the air and environment itself was trying to rip its own face off. A low faded scream of a wound that had torn into itself some time ago. Loutaro simply looked out at the town then out into the Jungle once more. Something was out there, something evil and something dark. Clawing at the minds and souls of himself and the people who inhabited this frontier.

They needed to find it, and they needed to drag it into the light.

Things had gone terribly wrong when the Sith had burned down his temple. Scoured through it to find relics, perhaps. The Jedi who had been there to defend left as they had to, to fight the good fight elsewhere in the Galaxy. Yet the older man had remained. Not to rebuild, not yet anyway, but to find what had been lost. His lab had been breached, and the Sithspawn he tended to, to fix and cure, had fled into the wilds of New Cov.

News, though, of Jedi returning had caught his ear.

Kahlil sat close by, idly listening under the hood of his cloak. Sipping at a cup of caf with best dad written across it. Curiosity, and the closeness of the Evergrown had him a bit more lax. Whatever Sithspawn had escaped would likely find itself among the others similar to it, bound to the Nexus. And perhaps he could see what the Jedi Order his daughter Colette Colette had a hand in leading would do.

Putting on the mask, the sleek black visored piece of technology, Conel let the mask click into place. Once it had done so, he could feel the ritual voice in his mind, and his mind begin to compartmentalize.
You will feel no remorse for those who would show none to you.
You will feel no fear beyond the fear of failing those behind you.
You will seek no reward beyond mission success.
You will feel no pain until death.
You are not wrath.
You are not vengeance.
You are the Light’s wraith.

His emotions and parts of his mind that were not needed for the mission at hand were sealed, closed away to be released later when the mask was removed. It was a process that had become second nature to him.

New Cov.

What happened to you?

The planet was once beautiful and becoming, then the Sith had arrived and brought fire and death with them. Want proof? Look around you, to the Temple that they burned down. Now it was a world of ash and ruin which was a sharp contrast to where there was overgrowth and torment. The ruins stood as a grim testament to the Sith's destructive power, with charred stone and twisted metal dominating the landscape. Yet, amidst the desolation, faint echoes of the planet's former vitality lingered, a bittersweet reminder of what was lost and what might one day be reclaimed.

Connel was not here for sightseeing, nor was here to dwell on the past. There was a reason that the Force was pulling him to this planet and it was a matter of time before he found out what it truly was. He sensed a lingering presence in the Force, something ancient and unresolved. The pull was faint but undeniable, guiding him through the ruins toward an unknown destination.

Jarek's face remained professionally blank even though he had a quick flash of amusement at Ghelbert's description of himself. This was the man's home, his village, but one (of several) reasons that he didn't give a set title was quite simply that he didn't have one. He wasn't a leader, he didn't want to be one, but he was one of the few that the other village decision-makers could agree on. The previous leader was one of those that had simply disappeared, and Ghelbert was willing to be the 'face' of the village while they needed the outsiders. Once everything was back to normal someone else could handle the role. The rotundness was real, but the fancy clothing was there because that was what they thought offworlders expected to see.

At least, that was what the mercenary had been able to gather in his time here. But for the armor and weapons he carried - and maybe some selective amnesia - he could have been one of the villagers. When he spoke his vocal inflections were eerily close to theirs, and when he moved his gait could shift between soldier and local within a few steps. This was unique among the mercenaries. It wasn't a huge group of them - the village could barely afford the ones that had come - and had earned a couple of verbal jabs. It did help when it came to smoothing things over though...a couple of the mercs were quite rambunctious and another was a drunk who was lucky to still be alive, which was part of why he drank.

In like manner to Ghelbert though, Jarek wasn't the leader of the group, just a useful face at times. It wasn't a long-term merc crew here...it actually wasn't even a single crew. The brown-haired man had signed on with three other independent mercs for the flight here, and they'd met up with several others on the ground. There was no centralized armor style, sigils, available equipment, or weapons loadouts. Heck, tactical decisions were haphazard at best those few times they actually happened. At least their comm units were all compatible and they could communicate.

The locals were a hardy bunch, and commensurately stubborn. They had to be, to live here outside the domed cities that protected so many of the other residents of the planet. For them to have swallowed their pride, not to mention scraping together enough credits, to go to one of those domed cities and hire a group of mercenaries meant they were scared, and it showed. When night fell or banks of fog rolled through the area, sometimes even when a patch of clouds darkened the day, they tensed up. Some gravitated towards the presumed safety of the village, even though history showed there was no safety there. Once the hired soldiers had arrived, the night hours were their responsibility. A few began echoing the villager's anxiety, but whether it was a sympathetic response or their own unconscious reaction remained to be seen.

While others stepped forward to talk, Harbolt was content to stay quiet. He remained on the periphery, senses alert, eyes never remaining in one spot for too long. Attacking a group of Jedi and soldiers together could be the height of idiocy, but he'd met enough people to know there were some too dumb to realize it. He also knew that there were others who would just consider it an interesting challenge. More to the point though, with so much focus here the threats were greater elsewhere.

It felt like swimming in dense hot stew, the air. Like standing in an industrial grade steamer that never truly ceased operating. Boiling everyone's jiggling grey matter within their collective skulls like a slow cooker. The gnawing sense of danger and darkness combined with the jungle heat was a deadly combination. He had already wondered how the natives hadn't gone mad already. He would just have to ignore the heat, people needed his help and the situation looked grim as is. After a brief back and forth between the Mayor Ghelbert and the Protocol Droid. It was clear that these disappearances, these attacks, they had started up around a month and some weeks ago.

It was small at first. People seeing strange moving shapes and lumbering figures in the mist of the jungle. Shades and shadows that moved with otherworldly grace and purpose. Then people's pets started to go missing in those first two weeks. If they were lucky they would have a bloody collar or a severed paw to bury. Then it came for the vagabonds. The traders and drifters who would wonder in and out of town going from place to place across the New Cov jungles. Those who lived out in the wild and came back into town once or twice a month to restock on the creature comforts of life. It had been weeks since any of them had shown up.

"We just… we just heard distant screams at night… we all laid in our beds and pretended some big cat had caught some shrieking prey. We wanted… we wanted to believe thats what it was… but we knew it wasn't." Ghelbert interjected as the Protocol Droid gave its report to Loutaro.

"It only got more bold. It- Mother Halma down by the river. She made that run every day since I was a boy she always came back and just like that one day she's just gone. We found her buckets, her shawl, but she was just gone!" Panic began to set into the Mayor as he spoke to the Jedi. Loutaro had looked back with a saddened and compassionate look.

"It knew. We started setting up traps and trip wires around the village and it knew. It got around them and took Kydor from his bed. It took him, his wife, his two girls it just TOOK THEM." Ghelbert had gone somewhat pale and before he could press on. Loutaro put a gentle hand on his shoulder.

"Mayor, I promise we will find them. We will bring them home one way or another. Rest now." Loutaro focused a bit of his power and pushed it forward to fill the man with a sense of calmness. The mayor Ghelbert stumbled slightly and the exhaustion had caught up to him. With a brief pause the man almost collapsed into the arms of one of the mercenaries.

With a soft sigh, Loutaro watched as two of the mercenaries helped the mayor home to rest. Loutaro then looked to who seemed to be the man in charge of the outfit. The biggest and baddest of the mercenaries. Approaching the professionally blank faced man, the young Jedi spoke in a calm very straight forward and matter of fact tone.

"Hello, my name is Lou. I need your help. These soldiers are going to go door to door asking questions from witnesses and survivors. You've been here for some time. I feel a dark presence here in this jungle and I believe that I can find it. Once we know where it stays I can report back and someone with a lot of power, and a bigger checkbook than mine will come destroy it. With your help in the jungle I can see to it that said checkbook will be open to you." Loutaro could feel he was out of his depth here. The presence of the dark side was strong here. He could find it in that jungle but he dared not go alone.

Whatever was out there, Lou knew he couldn't take it. Hell, Loutaro had never even been in a real fight. Sparing and training sure? But a real fight for survival? No. He knew he would stick to his mission. Find the presence, find the cult, find whatever it was and where it stayed. Report back and let the professionals handle it. That, that he could do. He just needed to see who would come with him.
