Discussion How Long Does It Take You to Write?

Hello!

I'm not sure if this has been asked before; but I am curious:

How long on average do you take to write a reply?

I'm not speaking of how long it takes for you to reply to any given post (like hours, days or weeks). But how long does the actual writing process take place?

For me my average is roughly one hour. That includes the thinking, writing, proofreading, color-coding, etc. There are some occasions where my replies are written much quicker. But mostly they'll take about an hour.

So how about you?

Factory Judge
I personally have a rough outline drawn up of my characters' next actions, and then after reading any corresponding posts, I make edits and changes where needed, and then color code, etc The process is probably longer, but from sitting down to a reply and getting a new post out is 20-30 minutes.

It comes down tot he character and tone of the thread. A thread with Junko is a different beast then a thread with Matsu then is a thread with Akela. Then it is also depending on the thread type itself.. if it is a casual thread might not need the heavy detail just the continued dialogue. If it is exploring, worldbuilding then more detail and if there is action it is about checking and double checking for a movement flow

Because I'm a socially anxious creechur, it wildly varies. I typically spend more time on posts to private threads, worrying over if I'm giving my writing partner(s) enough material to work with, if the actions make sense, if things are interesting, if I'm keeping the plot moving, if I'm leaving too much of the creative work to my partner(s), etc. etc.

Public threads are a hell of a lot easier to write replies to and I can knock a post out in 30 minutes or less like a 90s pizza delivery guy.

I share the same anxieties as you do when it comes to writing on the forum
Once I actually start typing? Typically under 10 minutes. I usually just vomit words onto the keyboard, color a few of them in pretty colors, and hit post reply.

You are a speed-typer, ha ha! I am envious!

I love learning the insights of you all and your writing process. It's truly inspiring!

Generally speaking it takes me between 30mins to 1 hour to get about 400-500 words out. That is unless I get distracted or am having issues focusing, I have had stuff take as little as 20 mins for a 300 word post if I'm fired up. It also varies on character. Sindar and other lesser used chars of mine take longer because I genuinely have trouble with their "Voice" as it were.

Been writing for over ten years now, I learned to type pretty quick.

Probably helps me now that I'm in film school, I can write out assignments in like a day, so I put off all my work until the last minute lmao.

A true procrastinator when it comes to schoolwork. Some people do their best work while under stress. I think that that's beneficial for film school, ha ha!

Depends on the character and situation.

This guy is super easy to write for me so fifteen minutes for 300 words is normal.

I would say anywhere between fifteen minutes to forty-five minutes, depending on character, tone, and situation.

If I need to search for an image or add a bunch of links from the Codex/Factory/Wookie it obviously takes a bit longer.

A typical post for me tends to be between 400 and 800 words. That typically takes me 40 minutes to an hour. Depends on the time of day and flow too, of course! It's the thought process that gets me, or as Isobel Serraris Isobel Serraris says, researching the analogies/metaphors. Very relatable. So how some of you guys can manage to post under 20 minutes is beyond me, I'm envious!

Do you tend to make your in-character decisions on the spot in those cases? It always takes me a minute to come up with a good in-character reply!

I don't tend to count my words. So I am unsure of what the average word-per-minute-ratio is for me there, ha ha! I can't say that I know what my average word count is, to be honest. I think that my highest might be about 1000. And my lowest about a tenth of that. Sometimes a lengthy reply isn't warrented, unless I am DMing the plot, ha ha!

A typical post for me incorporates several factors: how awake I am in the morning, how tired I may be at the end of any given day and (sadly) as of recently, several health complications, one of which is affecting my eyesight, which adds a whole new layer of complication to things.

Factoring in all of those inputs and the length I'm shooting for based upon what others are posting, I can manage a post anywhere between 20 minutes to upwards of two hours.

My average is between 30-45 minutes, on a good day with favorable factors, I'd say.

Depending on the thread, how easily I can keep my mind on task (usually music helps but sometimes it just doesnt give the needed boost), and how easily I can stay in the character's head, anywhere from 45 minutes up to about an hour and a half on average.

That can also vary wildly though, as I tend to refer back to the posts that reference me in a thread to make sure I dont miss interactions or dialogue. So the more tags in a thread I have the longer a post will take. Especially as I am not a speed typist.
