Did Jared just use a barrier?

Oh Jax…

Two Bogwings had gotten through and then two more… Jax cut two of them down. Conel himself had wanted to say something, but Jalen had said the quiet part out loud, acting like a consistent Schutta and not just a mouthy one. Connel would not pile on though, Jax had been going through enough right now, he knew it and would not shed light on that. Perhaps this was the “Dark Voices” that Master San Tekka had spoke of…

So slowly, the Shadow(ironically) began to emanate an aura of calm, hoping to ease the tension and get his fellows focused easier on the task at hand and not the actions of each other. He compartmentalized his efforts to alter the environment, not utilizing all of his focus on it to do so. He could do two things at once…

Connel thought of Buster when he watched the two that were not bifurcated fall. Connel couldn't let them die indiscriminately if he could help it. Reaching out to catch, slow, and stop them with the Force, he had to give something up. He could do two things, but not three…

Jared! Jax! Can you extend that barrier to more than just you for long? Connel could go back to what he was doing with altering the environment in just a moment, he just needed cover long enough to do so as they were now exposed again, the bogwings that were tricked could now see them again if they looked.. Jax was more than capable, but he needed to get hopefully get out of the “kill” mentality. That was not going to help. Then he looked at Ko and Braze Ko, all three of us know you can do this, but if we get swarmed our best bet is carrying you. If we carry you, can you cover us?

Pride was not going to help either, and at least this way he could feel useful if he felt this was going to hurt him.

"All your years as a Jedi Master and you only have the creativity to cut down the native wildlife?"

He was right, "I suppose it means we failed the exercise if we got waylaid by the wildlife?" she pulled out her blaster pistol anyway and fired on one that dived bombed her. She always carried it on the lowest setting, it was for personal defence, not an offensive tool. The bogwing was stunned, hit the ground but then flapped and staggered as it shook the ions out of its head before climbing back into the sky and flying off, not interested with feeling that sting again. She was happy not to kill any of them, she didnt like it.

She fired her pistol a couple of more times, missing the nearest other bogwing but scaring it away from her. As she watched the jedi master bisect another she shook her head. Perhaps the rumours about what happened to people who used dark side saber forms too often was true.

She placed her hand on her comm. <<Can you come an pick me up, you've got my coordinates right.>>

<<Wow? You finished already, nice work! Be about fifteen yeah, you're a long way out.>>

<<Yeah, something like that, see you in a bit>> she closed her comm and fired her pistol again to keep the creatures from approaching her.

She felt a couple of the other jedi trying to do something to her mind that she couldnt identify (battle meditation and calming powers), so she focused on her mental defense training and attempted to shut them out.

At least the battle was winding down and only a handful of the creatures lay dead.

"Well that was dumb. If anyone else wants out I've got a lift coming in about fifteen." she laughed and thumbed behind her in the air. She might as well continue on with them until it arrived though. "Whats the next task?"

Cold winds bit into Master Zark's hands. The Jedi expedition was ascending into a far more unforgiving climate. He could feel the air grow thinner with each labored breath. Despite what the old man told Sal-Soren each Temple Guard candidate was being tested on more than just teamwork. Making it to the summit demonstrated a kind of endurance that he could mold into warrior spirit.

He looked down when the sound of raised voices on the comlink and blaster fire reached his ears. San Tekka watched the bogwings fall and observed the argument below, his expression inscrutable beneath the cortosis mask. More shrill bogwing cries echoed off stone confirming the Jedi's fears they would return.

Zark was about to intercede when a sound above him froze the blood in his veins.

"Surik's Blade..."

Whether it was the bogwings or the blaster or just the ill temper of fate the mountain above them crumbled into a sudden dangerous rockslide. Debris large enough to sweep the Jedi away began tumbling past. The bogwings broke off their attack run fleeing towards safety.

"Brace yourselves!" it was all San Tekka had time to say before his world vanished in a cloud of dust.

There were battles to be fought, plenty of them in this galaxy. And Jared was there to fight them, as a Warden and sometimes as a Jedi. He didn’t like the title of Jedi, but it was true to what he was, what his family was. Still, this was not those battles, these were bogwings and they were the invaders this time. Jared knew what he could do, and it was to at least alleviate some of these issues. Looking over at the tiny Jedi.

“Thank you. And Jared Starchaser.” As if he needed introduction. “Fenn… not familiar with you, come from the main Temple here or one of the Enclaves?” Hell, Fenn could come from Kattada and Jared would probably have misplaced him. Not any fault of Fenn’s all on Jared for being too much of a wanderlust.

“A pleasure, all the same.” A nod, and the tone earnest. Granted the meeting being pleasurable was cut short. Jared stepped in front of Fenn, well, as in front as landslides permitted and called on the Force. Pushing outward and creating a wall to help absorb some of the impact of the falling wall.

“Stay close.” He almost ordered.

Neither Jared nor Jax heard him.

…of course they didn’t.

And now—

the mountain moved.

Rock tore free above them in a grinding roar, the cliffside shuddering as debris broke loose and came screaming down.

OF COURSE THERE IS!

Connel’s first instinct hit before the thought even formed. The Force surged. A shield snapped into place above him Ko and Braze—catching the first impact in a violent shimmer of energy. Stone slammed against it, splintering, deflecting—but not enough.

Not wide enough. Not for all of them, so he killed it.

As quickly as he put it together, Connel realized it would only help them and not everyone. He was reminded of something Michael(Bren Alazar of Omega Squad) had told him.

You’re tired? Your muscles hurt? Doesn’t matter. People need you… get up!

His jaw set. Anyone who can trust me right now, listen! Stack up! Center… push back! Right… throw right! Left… throw left! We move in waves!

No one gets left behind!

There was no flourish, or pause, only direction. Connel started to reach out, not to stop the avalanche, but to break it. Falling stones shuddered midair, their paths twisting as invisible force caught and redirected them. Larger chunks slammed into each other, breaking apart, scattering into safer trajectories. Others veered off entirely, hurled sideways into open space.

It wasn’t clean, nor was it controlled. It was enough to matter.

And it was costing him.

The Force around him wasn’t smooth anymore—it dragged, resisted, like trying to hold water in a closing fist. His breathing tightened. One rock slipped through too close, clipping past his shoulder. Too close. He adjusted, not stopping, or slowing.

But he felt it now—the drain. The edge. Still, he held the line. Eyes were blurring, senses were dulling.

Because if something gave—it wasn’t going to be them.

The group seemed disoriented by the Bogwings and Jax Thio Jax Thio 's decision to engage them.

Balun Dashiell listened to the Force, the flow of ethereal energies washing over him like a calming breeze in an open field. He let the Force wash over him, keeping him focused on climbing and the state of the other members of the group.

He didn't allow his feelings to be inflicted upon the more immediate threat of losing his grip and slipping; the fall itself would have proven deadly had any of them lost their footing. He figured that some, if not all, of them could maintain a controlled descent in such a case, but when tempers were up and circumstances were stressful and busy, reflexes and instincts could at times become dulled.

In comparison to the battlefields and high-risk missions that Jedi were often stationed on, this experience should have been straightforward. The Force could bring all kinds of twists and turns to one's path, and as Jedi, they all needed to learn to adapt to the circumstances that arose.

Jax had acted as a means of covering the group, his intent one of assistance and goodwill despite his means. Ko Vuto Ko Vuto , further below, had found assistance in Braze Braze and Jalen Kai'el Jalen Kai'el . Jared Starchaser Jared Starchaser was a little higher, accompanied by a smaller Jedi Renard Fenn Renard Fenn , who was of a species that Balun didn't recognise, yet hearing the little one's encouragement towards Jared was a kindness that gave Balun reason to smile to himself. Zark San Tekka Zark San Tekka and Katherine Holt Katherine Holt continued to guide them, the latter encouraging them to keep on climbing and speaking as though she had read Balun's thoughts on the matter.

One problem at a time.

Next thing he heard was the rumbling of the earth against his chest, the cliff face itself shaking in warning of the coming landslide, which lifted Balun's gaze high, eyes wide in realisation. Pulling himself in tighter against the rock wall, his chest pressing against the rough surface of the cliff, he attempted to make himself the smallest target possible for the falling debris.

Connel Vanagor Connel Vanagor had initially erected a Force Shield over himself and a couple others, the surge on the force felt in strength between their shared surroundings, Balun himself looked within, his left hand releasing from the rock and extending above his head, palm skyward and fingers outstretched as he enacted the same power, a telekinetic wall above him to keep himself covered from the raining debris.

The thinning air and oxygen at higher altitudes was one of the few things that made this expedition a little easier for Ko. Afterall the Kel Dor could survive in the vacuum of space for a time with only his antiox mask. Less oxygen in the air meant it didn’t need to work as hard to keep the toxic gases at a tolerable level for his lungs.

He felt it as they climbed with Braze, being both lower than most the bogwings didn’t bother them as much thankfully. Even so doubt crept its way into his mind. Doubt in his team mates, and doubt in himself. As though something was reminding him that he didn’t belong. Such as how the only place on this fertile world for Ko to find comfort was high up in the mountains. Where life giving air, and warmth became scarce. Where the trees and vegetation grew short and thin with every meter climbed. Naboo, a lush paradise to many, was just another oxygenated, caustic hellhole for Ko and others like him.

Kel Dor were a forsaken people, even their own homeworld wanted them dead. With horribly violent storms that could lay waste to entire cultures. The star system was even caged between two black holes forever at odds in an eternal game of tug of war over which one will finally swallow Dorin whole. There was no escape, no sanctuary for himself or his people.

"Bogwings aren't the only danger in these mountains. There's a local legend about dark voices on the wind that lead climbers astray."

As they climbed Braze would likely feel Ko’s pace slowing as his mind narrowed with negativity. Unfocused on the task at hand. The grip he had on a solid purchase of stone weakened some. His claws dragged back closer and closer to the edge until the narrow tips of his claws only had a centimeter left of space before falling. Knowing that if he did he may very well drag the young echani along with him after they tied themself to him.

However, Ko finally snapped back to his senses when he heard yet another warning of danger. He looked up to see if it was more bogwings. But instead saw only a brown and grey wall of dust and rock washing down the mountainside towards them.

Reacting quickly Ko braced and pushed his backside flush against the mountainside. With his knowledge of shaping earth through The Force made something of a crater or indent with his body. At the same time he grabbed Braze and pulled them close and firmly against him. Using the mountain to protect them. He wasn’t sure if the others did or even could’ve aided in protecting them, the rockslide did a good job at obscuring their allies.

The smaller of the two could feel the sluggishness in Ko's movements; the longer stretch between each step and shift in position made the climb all the more strained for Braze. When the sharp crack of stone came tumbling down from above and shouting broke out, he felt the emotions of his fellow Jedi colliding in sudden, fevered peaks. It was deeply disorienting to take in as an empathic Force wielder. Normally, he tried to keep his mental shields in place, to keep such things from pressing in on him, but here it seemed as though the mountain itself worked against him.

For the time being, he was stuck beneath Ko's weight, wedged in close and unsure how to move without ruining the Keldor's purchase. He could have squirmed free from under him… but then they both might have gone tumbling if Ko lost his footing or his grip on the stone.

Braze gave a small squeak as he was pulled into a strong embrace and found the wall of the mountain closing around the two of them. He blinked rapidly, then looked down at the strong arm that had been so unceremoniously wrapped around his middle. He could not recall ever being this close to Ko in such a manner before, yet in that moment he felt only gratitude for the Keldor's quick action. Jagged stone tumbled past the opening in the cliff face just beyond them. Facing away from it, by virtue of how he was caught in Ko's hold, made Braze realize all at once just how high up they truly were.

"Thanks..." he took a deep breath and let it out slowly closing his eyes. " Maybe we should take a moment to gather ourselves , I'm not quite feeling right... how are you feeling right now?"

“Don’t mention it…” Ko replied before loosening his grip and allowing Braze to more comfortably find something to grab onto. “Based on the trajectory of the falling rocks I might have acted too hastily. We might have already been saved by our friends above.” Ko commented after getting a moment to process the sudden rock slide. It was dusty though and made it hard to see.

Closing his eyes Ko focused on perceiving his surroundings with The Force. Peering through the haze of the dusty to take account of all those with us. As far as he could tell nobody had been sent careening down the cliff side in the chaos. Taking in what Braze asked Ko only thought for a moment before answering.

“I also feel like something is off. Like I’m reliving a bad memory.” Part of him was feeling grateful that they were on Naboo and not some place like Dorin. Recalling how during a previous visit to the planet with the echani they expressed a desire to conquer one of the many ‘slag summits’ there.

Even from her position towards the bottom, Katherine could feel the cold chill as it rolled down along the mountainside. They were now not just dealing with managing oxygen, but also an increasingly frigid temperature. It was however something the redhead was used to. Despite those years being far removed, she still retained the lessons she had learned doing ‘survival training’ on Mygeeto.

Katherine let out a breath, trying to maintain her focus as she bolstered the group’s efforts to shield themselves from the agitated bogwings. Only to feel a slight; but building, rumble beneath where her hands were grasping against rock.

Oh for kriff’s sake…

Hearing Master Zark’s warning, Katherine retracted her focus from the shielding and braced herself against the mountainside. Fortunately, it meant the bogwings were also forced to retreat, though it was a question if they would forever.

Peering up, Katherine could just about see; but definitely hear, the sounds of the falling debris being blasted apart into smaller pieces. Being at the bottom, there was little Katherine could do to directly act, but she could still assist. Focusing again, she reached into the Force and stretched it outwards, passing over her fellow Jedi above her and combining her strength into the efforts far above to impede the falling rock.

But as Katherine continued to push against the strain she was feeling, something wisped past her ear. A whisper.

Frigid winds carried away dust as the mountain slumbered. Of Master San Tekka there was no sign. The old Jedi had been high above them, beyond the reach of Vanagor's heroic barrier. Bogwings screeched in distress as they fled from the expedition. Some of the poor creatures were killed by falling debris. Most escaped and did not seem eager to tempt fate again so soon.

Then a rope was tossed down to the climbers and Zark's temple guard mask peaked out over a ledge hidden from below.

"Secure Vanagor!" his voice crackled over the comlink, "I'll pull him up, and the rest of you can climb the rope once he's safe."

It was hard to see this high up, but it looked like Connel was either unconscious or on the verge. He might need medical treatment and more pressing than that his dead weight threatened to dislodge the other Jedi tied to him for safety. Something responded to Zark's fears and dark words were carried by cold winds.

A mysterious voice urged Dashiell and Sal-Soren to cut Vanagor loose. He was too reckless. Not worthy. It would be better for the Order if he did not survive the climb. That same dark presence urged Jalen to avenge the bogwings and Jax to call them back through the Force so that he could prove his counterattack was justified. It told Braze and Ko that their bond was going to get them both killed and one of them should be sacrificed so the other could live. Katherine was urged to fly away and abandon these fools to cruel fate.

"Let them fall," the dark winds whispered in Zark's ears, "It's a more merciful fate than what awaits them when the Sith burn this world like all the rest and you can't stop them."

He felt a strong compulsion to let go of the rope. Something malevolent was attempting to influence everyone's thoughts.

The rockfall continued for a few moments as some of the jedi shielded them and others redirected the boulders. Betty used her own telekinesis to add to the defence, but still as everything settled and the adrenaline reduced she felt the burn on the side of her forehead and a small trickle of blood where one had winged her. Better to be hit by a stone the size of a golf ball than a rock the size of a wardrobe though, so she would count that as a win.

Zark San Tekka Zark San Tekka looked over the edge and told them to tie off the line of the mentally confused Connel Vanagor Connel Vanagor . The task was done but then Bettany had a thought. This mission had been awful already and would likely only get worse? We're they really doing him a favour dragging his body into harm.

"Jedi believe in mercy, death is not the end of one's story." she muttered to herself as she swung closer to Connel and grabbed onto his rope. Her blade was in her hand and she pulled her it onto the rope and began sawing at the high tensile rope, watching strands begin to ping one by one. She smiled at the good she was doing, his spirit would thank..... "WHAT!" she snapped as Balun Dashiell Balun Dashiell slapped her knife away and it tumbled far into the void, rapidly disappearing beyond any hope of telekinetically catching it.

She looked at him, he had a strange look in his eyes, and a knife in his own hand. He wanted to do it, perhaps to spare her the knowledge that she had sent an ally to his death. It was sweet, he was sweet, it was unnecessary, but she held the slightly scored rope and offered it to the kind and handsome man in front of her.

The climb had slowed as the group had been forced to take whatever cover they could find, the landslip from above threatening to wipe them all from the cliff face. What might have hit Balun, had instead found the Force Shield he had managed to establish above himself in time for the large chunks of rock and upended soil to shatter into smaller pieces, all else that was loose and breakable, cascading down the rock wall at his back.

When the visible threat had subsided, a strange silence seemed to come over him. Balun couldn't place it, as he could see the others shouting to each other over the wind, voices heightened in the aftermath of surviving the landslide, yet it wasn't their words that came to him, but rather the feeling of deprivation, as though his senses were being lulled by a shadow not seen but all but certainly present.

Without conscious thought to guide him, he looked down towards where Connel Vanagor Connel Vanagor and Balun found him wanting. 'He's going to slow us down. We need to finish the climb, live up to the task that's been set for us,' the words came to mind, perhaps by his desire to fulfil the challenge that had been set for the group seeking to become wardens of the Temple Guard, a role that would provide a great deal of responsibility in watching over their peers in the Order. 'A Jedi's life is one of sacrifice for the greater good'.

Balun reached for the sheathed blade within his right boot, raising his knee in order to take the small vibroblade from its housing without losing his footing, then gradually moving towards the taut rope that had Connel secured. By chance or the will of the Force, he caught sight of Bettany Sal-Soren Bettany Sal-Soren , a knife in her own hand, and the image immediately struck him as one of hostility. You didn't pull a weapon unless you were forced to harm another person; the Jedi were not killers, it was only ever as a last resort...

The revelation swept over him, 'Chit what am I doing?' he frantically thought, wasting little time to reach the rope that was Connell's lifeline, Bettany on the other side of it and smacking the weapon from her grasp. He hadn't tried to hurt her, but the impact of his open hand against her wrist had been enough to loosen her grip of the small blade.

"It's okay. You're okay," Balun quickly reassured her, before glancing down towards Connel once more, realising they had nearly been responsible for the man's early demise; "Clear your mind. Recentre yourself. Master San Tekka is right, something about this place feels off," Balun explained, perhaps being too quick for Bettany to absorb his intentions, but soon found himself starting to descend in the hope of meeting and offering his help to Connel, should he wish it.

Balun didn't want to entertain the notion of what he might just have done; the thought of cutting Connels rope was a horrifying shock to his system, but he tried to focus on those around him, those like Connel who deserved worthwhile teammates, supportive and encouraging rather than whatever had tried to coerce him into doing.

They had to continue to move. Jared was keeping up with the others, but remaining behind, almost as a rear guard. He was more than understanding his skills, and getting up to the peak? He could do. But with everything else going on? He was preferring to stand watch from back here. With Holt and San Tekka up ahead, he knew the Guardians were going to be fine.

But what he didn’t know, was if he was going to satisfy what they were looking for. The Warden could hear the voices, feel that dulling of senses. He looked down at his diminutive partner for the climb and took a deep breath. They were going to be fine. Getting up there was the goal.

“Stay the course.” He whispered, putting it out into the Force. He knew the tricks of the dark side. And not just the Sith, but of the hedge crafts that littered the outer rim, the ones that you didn’t need to dedicate yourself wholly to, but still granted tricks and powers.

You know the tricks of hte wilds. You know how to approach the wilds and survive. These do not. You could leave them here, return to take their gear. All that kyber…”
Jared shook his head. The dark voice.

Another deep breath and Jared pushed out with the Force. He was skilled in illusions, but could he push a false thought back to the source? He could try. Pulling on the Force of those around him, he was being careful to allow them to continue, all the while pushing back against the dark voice.

“Leave.” He verbally spoke, matter of fact. Definite.

"Better safe than sorry…" he murmured to Ko at first, the words almost lost beneath the strong wind outside the protective cavernous hole.

Braze was no stranger to the noise inside his own head. Usually it was only himself in there, thoughts breaking apart and breeding more thoughts, one fret opening into numerous others, each one running fever-hot until anxiety gnawed them hollow and the whole miserable swarm pressed in from every angle.

It told Braze and Ko that their bond was going to get them both killed and one of them should be sacrificed so the other could live.

This did not feel foreign enough....That was the real danger of it.

His mental defenses, that were typically drawn tight and high like that of formidable citadel gates, had loosened in the aftermath of the rockslide, after the fear , and after the shock of finding himself crushed close in Ko's arms instead of dashed against the mountainside. The thought slid in wearing his own voice bearing the sentiment of his own shame... and worst of all... His own love.

By the time he noticed what he was doing, his hands were already at the rope around his waist.

"Better… safe… than sorry," he whispered again.

The rope came loose with humiliating ease beneath fingers gone clumsy with cold. He twisted free of Ko's grasp and turned to face him there in the cramped stone alcove, the wind pulling at his clothes, the drop yawning just beyond them. For one small moment, Braze only looked at Ko Vuto Ko Vuto .

Then Braze reached out and laid one hand against Ko's forearm, in a soft gentle and, lingering touch. His other rose slowly to the line of the Keldor's mask, tracing its edge with a care that felt terribly tender there at the end of everything. His jade-green eyes had gone glassy.... they looked... wounded. As if the thought had already cut its place inside him.

"I've always held you back… haven't I?"

The words came soft, almost childlike in their hurt and honesty.

Even when they were younger, Ko had always been there, hadn't he? Steadier, stronger, and always the one bracing, carrying, and enduring. Braze with his vast emotional spirals, his fretting out bursts of despair, his endless need for reassurances; Ko forever reaching back for him, making room for him, bearing weight that had never been his to bear alone.

His throat tightened at the back painfully so as all those childhood memories of the two of them growing up together in the creche on
Coruscant during peace times came flooding back.

"Even now… You were always the better Jedi."

Braze drew the loose length of rope up with trembling hands and worked it around a jut of stone within the alcove, fingers fumbling once before he managed the tension knot. The gesture held no violence in it but rather the sentiment of a frightened sort of care.

"Better safe than... sorry," he said for the third time, and now it sounded like an apology he could not stop making.

Then with out another word he stepped back toward the edge, motion devoid of any grand flourish, and lacking any semblance of a final brave smile as a familiar grief stricken self loathing frown formed. That distant, aching look still caught in his eyes as his heel found empty air and his slight frame tipped out of the shelter and into the vast cold below.

Once Braze got himself free of his grip Ko’s single arm grabbed at the ledge once more to keep himself secure on the mountainside. The Kel Dor didn’t quite understand what the Echani was doing at first as they untied themselves with the rope. At first Ko was wondering if they were gonna try and climb up ahead to check on the others.

His brow furrowed some over his antiox mask over Braze’s words. With the sorrowful admissions of being held back and better. He wasn't sure if this was a good time for such a discussion. He no longer found the idea of there being “better jedi” all that appropriate or productive to begin with.

“It’s not a competition, you know that.” Ko dismissed rather coldly, not fully recognizing yet what Braze was saying or doing. For the Kel Dor, memories flashed of all the firsts the younger more talented apprentice got to enjoy before him.

When they got properly out of reach of him alarms went off in his mind just before it was too late and Braze chose to let himself fall back. Reflexively Ko tried to reach out and grab them with his lack of an arm. This invisible phantom limb only able to weakly touch the edge of Braze’s robe before they were well out of reach. “No!” Ko shouted as he tried to give himself a little more reach by letting go of the ledge he held onto in a vain attempt to follow the Echani down. But he was denied by the rope that they’d tied to him. Pulling harshly on his body to keep him falling too.
