Gamechanger: Raid on Kayri [Mandalorians]

Jorga the Hutt

When life gives you Mandos, make Mando'ade
KAYRI
EDGE OF THE UNKNOWN REGIONS

Many years ago, the Lords of the Fringe had come to Kayri. They'd colonized it, treated the local Charon with some degree of tolerance, unceremoniously removed their most sacred artifact, built a fortress in its place, and defended the planet against the Omega Protectorate successfully. The Protectorate was gone, the Fringe was gone, many of the Charon were gone, and even the artifact was gone...mostly. The fortress remained.

In more recent years, the One Sith had dominated some nearby regions of space. This run-down fortress, however, had remained inviolate, as if it failed to register on the Sith radar. There was a reason for that: leftover pieces of void stone, mounted in ancient amulets and ornaments, now carried by the local militia that controlled the fortress. Better than taozin amulets, almost as good as ysalamiri, and in some ways better. This raid was the brainchild of Rel Connory, the inventor, and he had a fairly serious plan for the void stone fragments. Anything else the mando'ade might find was theirs to share out among themselves, but the void stone...that would be to the benefit of all, once Connory was done with it.

***
The Mandalorian raider ships decloaked in deep atmosphere at night, well below the lower limit that the fortress's sensor dish could detect. By rappelling lines and jetpacks and repulsor belts, the mando'ade began to deploy around the fortress. This area was forested, and complex, ancient trees gave rise to irregularities in the fortress's defensive shield. Irregularities, even gaps. Places where a shield disruptor or even just a bullheaded charge could get a Mando through. From there it was a matter of negotiating a minefield carefully and quietly, avoiding the floodlights overhead.

The fortress was hidden from the Force, muddy like a taozin, impeding senses, but since when did that matter to a Mandalorian?

Void stone.. It was fairly legendary and rather complex, and Ijaat would not pass it up in the least. He hadn't been fully briefed or read in on the details of the project. But Connory was known to him, and so were his inventions and ideas. So when the name had been brought up in connection, and since [member="Draco Vereen"] had brought him back into the fold, at least marginally, he had been in the loop for this. So he had shown up, covered in murder-tooth skinned jacket and gloves and vest, and oddly enough a rather heavy looking backpack with hammers and other gear attached to it in various loops and hooks.

As he landed one the ground with a flair of coat and beskar shod boots, he looked around to see if he knew anyone in his area.

The Rekalis had showed up in force for this particular raid.

Anti-Force-user sentiment was on the rise among the Mandalorians, and privately, after years of dealing with idiot Sith and idiot Jedi, Alec could understand it. Prejudice irritated and offended the witches and Vahla and other Force-sensitives among the Rekalis, but rather than take their toys and go home, it drove them to prove that they did follow the resol'nare, that they were just as much mandalorians as the next vod. So they fought their formal duels in ysalamir fields like Ember Rekali had, and when the time came to assault a Force-immune hard target like this fortress, they sought to lead the charge. What were they without their spells and cantrips and runes and pelko-bug prophecies? Ideally, they'd turn out to be just plain Mandalorians. Even if their spiky, organic, Crusader-style armour was covered in magic glyphs from multiple Force traditions; even if a few of them carried lightsabres. In the void stone field of the fortress, the glyphs did nothing and the sabres couldn't block worth crap. There was honor in tackling any given challenge with a voluntary handicap. It was as if the Rekali witches were saying we can be as mando as you with one hand tied behind our backs. Alec wasn't a Forcer, but that level of handicap sounded about right.

Once upon a time, two powers had come to blows in this sector of space. Fringe and the Protectorate. It had gone terribly poorly for the latter. Now both had been turned to dust. The temper tantrum of a mad goddess called Akala contributed to this state of affairs. Most of this had been beyond Elpsis. She'd been busy smuggling, shooting things for credits and simply surviving.

Now the Mandalorians had decided to raid a Force-immune fortress to raid precious stones that caused the aforementioned Force immunity. So the young Firemane decided to tag along. Truth be told, her connection to the Mandalorians was thin. She'd helped [member="Mirshko Betna"] escape from the clutches of an evil Pirate Lord and Auntie Siobhan sort of counted as a Mandalorian. However, she was a Force-user and anti-space wizard sentiment was on the rise amongst the people of Mandalore.

So why then was she here? The reason was quite simple: Elpsis was a Force-user who disliked most magi. Too many of them acted as if they were superior beings just because they'd been born with powers, leaving common people to clean up the mess their crusades caused. 'Luminous beings we are. Not these crude plebeians' seemed to be the credo.

The fact that her father was an evil Sith Lord and her own experiences as a young Jedi probably played a role in this sentiment. So if the Mandalorians were fed up with idiot Jedi and idiot Sith, she could understand that. There was a time when a younger Elpsis wanted nothing more than to be 'normal'. Empathy and farsight had not seemed like gifts to her, but curses. She had largely moved past that recently, but perhaps she also wanted to prove to herself she could cope without space magic. She'd brought guns, knives and explosives.

You couldn’t go two steps anymore without hearing the name Vizsla in the Mandalorian territories.

They had come in like a wrecking ball at Agamar, saving the asses of the main mandalorian forces who had been pinned down by the Death Watch. And from there Clan Vizsla pushed for greater and bigger challenges, all to prove their worth and to remove any doubt in people’s mind about what they were capable of.

It wasn’t a surprise then that when the raid was put into motion that Vizsla found itself in the thick of it.

They were trained killers. Numbering in the dozens they had dropped planetside not far away from the fortress complex, each of them equipped for close-range encounters and jungle combat.

"Why we after stones anyway, Ronan?" Vashak mumbled from under his breath while keeping an eye out on the path.

"Void Stone, Vashak." The clarification came just as quietly while they crept up towards the defensive shield of the fortress. Others - the Rekali Witches for instance - had already phased through with Iron Crown-grade shield bypassers or forced their way in by sheer determination.

"Brother Rel says it’s a necessary component to counter the Sith and their like. I believe him."

There it was.

Shimmering, anytime a leaf touched it, it hummed and vibrated. With a click his bypasser engaged and Ronan made to move through the shield himself, with his clansmen in tow.

Clan Vereen was small in number, its Force Users that claimed it as their home and family were shamanistic in nature. Three stood around Draco wearing beskar'gam adorned in furs, human and animal bones, their buy'ce adorned with horns or antlers. They carried an ornamental veshok wood staff along with a few Mandalorian weapons such as beskad and chaavla revolvers. Their abilities meaningless where they were going, but normally they revolved around nature and magick.

Draco stood on the raid ship Clan Vereen had pledged to this raid. Twenty one other Mandalorians sat in the passenger compartment waiting to arrive. They knew nothing about Otherspace, nothing about any of this. Only that the call had been given and they had answered as proper Mandalorians always did.

"Just follow the Rekalis and keep with them. I've got no knowledge or information about this besides what you all know, so form fire teams, secure the area, and let those better informed get the goods. We will focus on keeping any enemies at bay." There was talk of some native beasts and denizens of Otherspace, and other jungle beasts and creatures, possibly hostile Fringe leftovers, so someone would have to lead the charge and buy time for the others.

Other ships were to port and starboard, the Rekali witches ahead of them pushing for the mysterious other object they had spoken of.

It was about damn time that Lok was allowed to go on a raid with his fellow Mandalorians. How much he wanted to be on these dangerous, Mandalorians raids and prove that he could handle himself and join future raids with his fellow brethren. A small squad of Munin clansmen were with the youngster and, whether they liked it or not, they considered him as their commanding officer; however, they could check him when he was about to commit a stupid mistake, and it was a good thing that he had a lieutenant that was a elite soldier of the clan. That said lieutenant would give him advice of leadership and applying efficient tactics that would conserve ammunition and minimize the casualty numbers.

Like Vilaz, the squad of Munin clansmen were armed to the teeth. Some carried scatterguns of the slugthrower type, others carried rifles that were either blasters or slugthrowers, and few carried verpine sniper rifles. Obviously, they all had melee weapons of some kind and pistols as their secondary firearm. Their armor also had integrated weapons systems such as flamethrowers, acid throwers, anti-personnel missile, you name it.

Using the satchel lines of the raid ship Lok was the first of his squad to descend to the ground of the Kayri. His individual field disruptor was activated from his utility belt which allowed him to bypass through the defense shield of the once controlled Firnge fortress which was now being occupied by the local militia. Tall, ancient trees began to surround him as he descended further and further into the depths of the forests.

Connory's shield disruptor was a jury-rigged thing, hardly the equal of a good Iron Crown module, but it served well enough. He bull-rushed his way through a weak point in the shield, under the arch of a tree, and into the cleared space that surrounded the fortress. The smarter move on the defenders' part would have been to shove back the forest even farther, but the Fringe had never been known for qualitative consistency in its day.

He stopped himself just inside the shield, scanning the open space. The mines showed up easily enough to his helmet sensors; this place hadn't been fortified with Mandalorians in mind. About to jetpack over the minefield, he paused and scanned again, cautious of buried weapons emplacements.

Off to his left, a Mando engaged his jetpack and zipped over the minefield, his pack a double flare of fire in the dark night. And then his thermal signature fell apart, and a mine detonated about halfway to the wall. Searchlights focused on the charred crater.

Rel scanned again, swore, and commed the entire strike force on an encrypted channel.

"All vode, be advised. We've been spotted. There are monofilament lines strung across the clearing. They'll cut you in half if you try to jet over the minefield."

Mia's inability to perceive what lay ahead in the force left her uneasy and annoyed. Not because she couldn't feel what lay ahead, but because in her time away she had become so reliant on her abilities in the force, something lifted to her by a fething sith. Keeping her frustration to herself and grateful for the tvisor hiding her face she made a mental note to take a trip to Myrkr and remind herself what is was to be without the force. If she was to regain respect among the mandalorians again, she would have to learn not to lean so hard on the one thing that had brought her back to them.

Pushing through the shield behind Rel she cursed softly as they took their first casualty. Picking their way across the minefield would be a slow process, with the fortress alert to their presence, they would not make the going easy for them. "Alright, move in pairs, one to watch your path, the other to watch those lights. If anyone was smart enough to bring a sniper, use it. The less they see the easier it is for us."

She looked at Rel "After you." she gestured into the minefield, grinning beneath her helmet.

Blindness... It creeped into his Vision, and he cursed and adjusted the eyepatch over his left eye, nodding in silent thanks to the catch by Rel. Whilst he had grown used to the Force passingly quickly, Myrkr and the encounters there had reminded him of who he was before the Force. Corrected his course from the hermit like Mystic to something of a compromise. His mechanical arm whirred almost silently, and he moved the shacklebolt rifle from it's sling to a low ready, scanning the field with a mostly blind eye, even the sithspawn contact lens like parastire in his right eye serving as less than useful except in correcting visual acuity. The rifle hummed with miniature repulsors and decelerators as he turned to [member="Draco Vereen"] and nodded, gesturing from himself to the other smith.

The gesture ended in a wide sweep between the two, as if to ask who he would prefer to go first, an a savage grin of sorts as well.

Sko'saht slowly pulled the ship's wings up while still trying to maintain some speed as he landed. Keeping the ship mostly level he burned off the last of the ship's speed and altitude to the point where tree tops scrapped the bottom of the hull as he swung the ship around so it faced backwards. The co-pilot lowered the ramp as the ship itself lowered for landing.

"Five seconds" he said over the helmet's comms to all the Clan Vereen warriors in the back. The Verpine had only joined the Mandalorians a few months ago and this was going to be his first proper mission. Getting used to the lifestyle of the Mandalorians had been an interesting experience but focusing in on the more technical aspects had proven his usefulness not as much as a warrior but more as an engineer and a pilot.

Focusing back in on his piloting he smoothly set down the transport in a small clearing just outside the defenses. Idling the muted engines and turning back on the scanners, shields, weapons, and almost all the systems that could have given away their arrival he waited for any more orders.

Staying behind the Rekali's was always a good idea, at least in Clan Gratiir's experience. The Gratiirs were the culinary types, and ones who enjoyed simple farm work but today. Today they decided to pitch in and go along on this raid on Kayri and to this end they sent Lorsima, alone. The Gratiirs didn't have enough beskar'gam to go around and so from beneath the t-shaped visor Lorsima smiled, today she would honor her clan. She had left her sister Sabetha to mind the small patrol craft that she owned, she had gone with the others under the cover of night.

Descending into the forests, she had followed up behind the raiding partying. The forest was thick, and the trees were taller than she had expected worst she knew little about the place just that they were going after void stone. A growing anti-force sentiment had been building up within the clans she couldn't blame them but void stone, it was certainly going to change a lot. There were irregularities, but from back here it wasn't something she could spot she maintained her pace and stopped when word of the minefield spread. Followed by the order to pair up and keep watch, she cursed, she wasn't the sniper in the family that was Sabetha. She was better at hand to hand, defeating her enemies while she could see their face.

The fortress was now on alert and their searchlights were now moving, scanning for anyone else who dared to make the jump.

A raid had been organized and Kima had signed up in a heartbeat. The trip had been a bore, but as they'd landed and disembarked, things seemed to be becoming increasingly interesting by the moment.

She'd kept up with the rest of the group and noted that most carried some form or variant of disruptor field, something she admittedly lacked. Frowning, she watched as [member="Rel Connory"] bulled through the shield. Here and there, others managed to bull through with or without a disruptor, at least not one visible. Nodding once to herself, she took a few steps back and took her bevii'ragir in both hands. Logic dictated that smaller surface area on impact would be her ally in such a situation and she sincerely hoped such was the case.

Kima broke into a sprint towards the shield, her armored boots kicking up clumps of dirt as she ran. The shield nearing, she planted the butt of the hunting spear firmly into the ground and launched herself into the air. Her boots hit the wall of energy first, sending an impact shock up her legs and into her torso. For a moment, she feared it wasn't enough, that she would rebound and fall to the ground in a humiliating heap, but the second of doubt vanished as the resistance gave way. Just as suddenly as the solid surface appeared, it gave way.

Now on the other side of the shield, she managed to land more or less on her feet, albeit unsteadily. She stuck close to the raid leader, Connory, out of unconscious habit. As the night lit up with directional lamps and spotlights, Kima frowned. Things could get ugly fast if they weren't careful.

As she kept an ear on the comm traffic in her helmet, she collapsed the spear she carried. It was beskar, true, so it was hard to work and arguably heavy, practicality showed that smaller sizes were needed for ease of storage and carrying or to simply avoid catching it on things unnecessarily. The haft was designed to slide in on itself and so with a few simple movements, the much shorter spear found a place on her belt.

Her primary weapon now secure, she pulled the rather primitive weapon from her back and checked it over. Made of Olbio wood, the simple recurve bow was a rare sight outside of places the like of Endor, but she'd had enough practice with the weapon and preferred it over any blaster or slugthrower.

"How low do you think they've strung those wires?" she asked Connory, her tone conversational as if she were simply remarking on the traffic in Keldabe.

The explosive of the mine caused Lok and his squad to drop down to the ground. Seconds later after the detonation of the mine the unit rose back to their feet and paused for further instructions. They already lost one Mando from this raid. The youngster cursed knowing they already gained one casualty due to the ingenuity of the defense of the fortress. Hearing the words of Rel, he cursed again knowing that their jetpacks were useless for this phase of the raid. That meant they were going to scale this entire forests littered with mines with their feet. Before they continued to move on, more words came but from another Mandalorian that used to be a Sole Ruler of the Clans.

A grin was on Lok's face as he did brought a sniper rifle with him. One that was made in Ijaat's company and mimicked Verpine technology. Few other Munin clansmen brought sniper rifles which were unique and different than Lok's rifle.

Lok's unit would then listen to advice that Mia said in the comm channel that the raid party was using, and the squad would evenly split up with a partner and navigate through the minefield of the forest. "Got any clue on how to sweep them," the Munin kid would ask to his partner and was answered with a nod. With some demolition sensor from the left wrist of Lok's partner, mines would unveil themselves to the duo. The minefield was no exaggeration to the eyes of Lok just by noticing how many mines were placed. Then again, he couldn't blame the designers due to the void stones being held in the fortress that lay ahead of them.

"Let me take down this bugger," the Initiate said to his partner in regards to a searchlight that was scanning the forest floor. He crouched down to steady himself for good accuracy and aimed through the scopes of the Verpine rifle right at the searchlight. Their presence was already known to the defenders, so why keep up the whole discretion? A pellet was fired at the pulling of the trigger, and the projectile flew in silence with a fast velocity. The light that was emitting from the searchlight was just a void of darkness as the pellet destroyed the bulb from the searchlight.

He gestured his partner to keep on going after his silent work was done.

The fortress was on alert, searchlights were moving everywhere, there was a minefield and, if she'd heard correctly, using a jetpack would be rather hazardous. She could also sense or perceive anything due to Force immune rocks inside the aforementioned citadel. Her inability to draw upon the Force frustrated and irritated. Indeed, what vexed Elpsis the most was the fact that she was frustrated. It drove home how dependent she'd become on it, which was ironic because there'd been a time when she'd wanted nothing to do with it. The Force had seemed like a curse to her. Something she'd never wanted. Especially because of him. Xerexes still cast a shadow over her.

Get over it, Elpy, and pull yourself together, she reproached herself, muttering a Dahomian curse under her breath. Then there was a loud explosion when a mine detonated and a jetpack-using Mandalorian entered Manda. The young redhead winced strongly at the sight. Force empathy was off, but she was a natural empath, so she felt his pain keenly. It hit her like the blow of a hammer. Ouch. She took a breath, trying to compose herself.

Feth this Force crap. She'd done fine without it. Auntie Tegaea's only superpower had been going to the gym and using her brain. So she steeled herself and cautiously made her way through the forest, staying close to the others. Luckily the mines showed up easily on her sensors. As chance would have it, she ended up close to a certain Lorsima Grattiir, though Elpsis obviously didn't know the woman's name.

"Hey, I can cover you, if you spot mines," she said quietly. She was carrying an ARGH sniper rifle that was essentialy a knockoff of Verpine designs. She The gun's firing mechanism was virtually silent and the pellets could penetrate medium vehicle armour. Assuming a crouching position, she took aim and fired. No Force to steady her aim and guide her. Remember your training, slight alignment and trigger control. She focused, looking through the long-range, computerised interface scope. She squeezed the trigger, and the projectile leapt out. As it travelled through the air, it left a whooshing, buzzing sound in its wake. A searchlight gave up the ghost, then a soldier on the wall took a one-way trip into the Netherworld. Further shots followed to cover the Mandalorians if they came undere hostile fire.

"Pull around and see about providing some close air support Sko." Draco muttered as the bottom of the passenger compartment opened, revealing the ground and jungles below them. The Ship had its Individual Shield Disruptor, but so did most of the Individual Mandalorians on belts and combat harnesses.

The warriors slipped from the ship and into the jungle dropping into it behind the forward most group. "Scanners active. Reports of mines and mono-filament cables. Move. Use whatever fusion cutters we have to cut cables." The Vereen shamans moved quietly, among the other warriors without making too much noise as the Vereen warriors ducked through the jungles approaching the rest of the raid group.

Many of the warriors were carrying rifles with shields slung over their backs with beskads sheathed on their person as they ducked around the jungle until they came through the underbrush with the others. "Take cover, use long rifles to pick off armed targets."

Kima Betna said:
"How low do you think they've strung those wires?" she asked Connory
"I'm betting random heights," he said. A quick stroke of a vibroblade took off a nearby branch. He tossed it sidelong and watched as one, two, three wires took pieces off its foliage, all at different levels and angles. Off to his right, Clan Vereen fired up some fusion cutters, brilliant targets at night. Weapons fire was coming down from the walls in torrents now, but with multiple Mandalorian snipers taking out the searchlights, much of the defensive fire was useless.

Connory took several long steps to the side, then triggered his flamer. Napalm arced across a decent distance. He heard a subtle twang, then another, and stepped back to where he'd been standing. Defensive weapons fire hammered the place where he'd stood a moment ago.

Another idea struck him, perhaps a more viable one, and he scanned again. Slim poles stood in the clearing, very thin, each probably anchoring four or five monofilament cables. The other ends of the wires connected to other poles, or trees, or the walls themselves. Carefully, he began to blast down the poles, which took some doing. It also required him to keep moving, as blasterfire would draw blasterfire from above.

Once the other members of his clan had left the ship Sko brought it back up and locked the wings down. Hovering just above the trees he listened closely to the coms and caught word of the minefield with the cables over it.

Checking his weapons had been charged the Verpine broadcasted across friendly frequencies. "I can explode the" a rapid click sounded from his mandibles "along with the wires. The cannons can cut a path."

He still wasn't entirely fluent in Basic having not grown up on Nickel One itself but rather one of the more inner asteroids colonies. It had proven to be an issue especially in situations like this. Still he hoped that what he said about blowing up the mines was obvious enough.

"This is taking too long," Alec hissed to nobody in particular. "Longer it takes, the more weapons they can bring up to the walltops."

She took her grandfather's sword from her belt. There was all manner of strangeness about that blade, and none of it made a difference near the Void Stone fortress. Here it was just a sword, albeit tougher than most. She moved forward slowly and swung it before her in an X pattern, as if clearing brush. From time to time the blade met resistance; a chip tumbled free; a monofilament wire snapped. As some recoiled, the loose ends slashed against Alec's armor, scoring the duraplast and biting into the armorweave between plates.

She was bleeding from shallow cuts in a dozen places by the time she reached the base of the wall. Stowing the notched sword, she deployed the hard-sound gun in her bracer and placed the emitter against the stonework. A low rumble began to build, a shivering in the mortar closest to her. One rock cracked, then another and another.

Swiftly, Ijaat followed Alec without much thought. Truth be told, he was about as impatient as the other was. He was just getting better at hiding it. In return, he took a moment to switch the shacklebolt in his grasp to single fire, and began firing off bursts. Anytime someone shot near or around his fellow alor, he took the turn to fling a few bolts down range. The impact of them knocked bodies off the wall in his mind, and blew up bits of dust and chunks of rock. Solid tungsten hurtling at three miles a second made some nasty dents, and each shot roared like thunder, eventually attracting the massed fire towards him, but not penetrating the tough hide he wore.

"Alec, make us a hole damnt!"

Slamming another magazine into the shacklebolt, he began firing tight and controlled bursts upward, trying to keep the attention off her. It would appear their hosts were not interested in visitors. Smoke drifted across the murder field, and one hand drifted down across his equipment as he flared a shield into life and raised it, kneeling to use it as cover as he dialed it to maximum output. Blaster rounds pinged off it harmlessly as he ducked back and forth from under it, barking gun near to no recoil in his hands as he kept the fire squarely on him, regretting not having armor or the Force.
