OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
PHYSICAL INFORMATION
  • Age: Elderly—at least in his 70s, if not his 80s.
  • Force Sensitivity: Non-Force User
  • Species: Bothan
  • Appearance: A Bothan with dark brown eyes, grayish-brown fur, wrinkles and age spots. Looks pretty good for his age, all things considered. Usually found clad in either a lab coat (when he's working) or loose-fitting, slightly scruffy-looking clothing. Braids some of his hair, or at least ties it back so it isn't in his eyes. Wispy beard and a long, prominent snout. Frequently gives overly chatty people an annoyed "why are you wasting your time and mine" look, complete with a disparaging raised eyebrow.
SOCIAL INFORMATION
  • Name: Dr. Raehith Daanruano. Sometimes affectionately referred to as "the Stork", although he usually responds to the nickname with an irritated reply along the lines of "Do I look like a bird to you?"
  • Loyalties: Neris Farr | The Primyn Group
  • Wealth: He makes enough money to pay for a nice apartment, food and other needs, and all the liquor he wants.
  • Notable Possessions: While it isn't the one he uses at work, he does own an older version of the RM-MDS6 cell substructure splicer and has access to the latest Primyn Group gadgets, including the "Paradigm" Genetic Matrix and the "Ambertear" Exowombs.
  • Skills: A well-educated, experienced geneticist, Dr. Daanruano has spent the last fifty years working as a kind of futuristic OB/GYN, but with artificial wombs and genetic modifications. He helps rich people have genetically perfect babies without all the fuss and pain and gross parts. On the other hand, he is indebted to the Primyn Group, an organization of Sith scientists, so if they ask him to gestate a monster, he has no choice but to do it. Just as long as it doesn't involve impregnating an actual female with your latest Sithspawn abomination. He doesn't care how sadistic and twisted you are, it's strictly artificial wombs for him when it comes to monster baby-making. Anyway, the good doctor is also one of the last known people alive who worked on Project Warlock. The knowledge this man has, not only of their methods but of what exactly went on at the labs on Kiva, is quite extensive and invaluable. However, he is determined to take this information to his grave. Of course, there are various means of persuasion, including using the Force to, well, force him to cough up his secrets. But anyone who imposes such drastic measures on the frail old dog will have to deal with the wrath of his boss, Neris Farr, and that of the Sith authorities. He is, after all, a citizen of the Empire accorded all their rights and privileges. Within reason, of course.
  • Personality: A crotchety old man, he has the personality of a retired sailor. He's set in his ways—mostly because he figures he's more or less seen it all, so why bother changing anymore? Educated strictly as a scientist, not an alchemist, as you can imagine Dr. Daanruano doesn't exactly appreciate the methods of his new Sith employers, but he tolerates the constant flinging of Force-enhanced goo in his lab in the interest of avoiding a painful and horrific death. As long as you don't push him into territory he's not comfortable with (and there's quite a lot of territory he's comfortable with, don't worry—it's just that there's some things he won't do) he doesn't care what you ask of him or what you do with what he creates. It's none of his business. Really.
COMBAT INFORMATION
  • Weapon of Choice: N/A
  • Combat Function: He's too old for fighting. The best he can hope for is the protection of others.
Strengths:
  • You Know, I'm Something of a Scientist Myself: With over half a century's worth of education and experience in the field, Dr. Daanruano is quite a knowledgeable biologist and geneticist. He specializes in the use of certain machinery to alter cells in various ways.
  • Stubborn and Determined: This guy won't give up the goods no matter what you offer. Even trying to extract information from him by force or torture will prove difficult, as he will fight tooth and claw to keep it all under wraps. He'll also dig his heels in if you push him to do something he considers to be "going too far". Luckily for his employers, his limits are pretty out there already, so if he does refuse a request, you know it's really bad.
  • Keep Your Snout Clean: Given his line of work, the doctor knows the value of not being nosy. After all, as long as it doesn't affect him, why should he care what you're going to do with the mutated monstrosity you asked him to make for you? He doesn't want any trouble. You stay out of his business, he'll stay out of yours.
Weaknesses:
  • Can't Teach An Old Dog New Tricks: The good doctor is old. His advanced age comes with all the usual drawbacks—aches and pains, slower movement, waning strength, dulled senses, poor memory, a weaker constitution, and a host of health problems that will only increase with each passing year. To make matters worse, he doesn't always take the best care of his own body. Speaking of which...
  • Boozehound: Dr. Daanruano has a bit of a problem with alcohol. When he isn't working, he spends all his free time in bars drinking away his sorrows, and it's taking a major toll on his health. Just look at the list of liver transplants he's had.
  • Don't Call Me Dr. Faustus: Alchemy? The hell are you talking about? Oh, that space magic crap. Yeah, he doesn't know anything about that. His understanding of science is strictly Force-free, which is a bit strange considering that his current employer is an alchemist, but y'know. He doesn't work the magic, he just messes with cells and DNA.
  • A Little Less Conversation: The polar opposite of a social butterfly, Raehith hates talking, socializing, hobnobbing, whatever. Expect him to constantly remind you to "get to the point already" and respond to questions with short, curt answers. He comes across as rude and ill-mannered, but this is because he would quite literally rather be doing anything else other than holding a conversation. Doesn't matter who you are or how outgoing you are, he doesn't want to hear your blathering.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
Raehith Daanruano is a Bothan scientist. Educated at the Chandrilan Academy of Sciences, he studied biology and genetics with the aim of eventually transitioning into the medical profession. Through training and practice he had become very skilled with using a device known as the cell substructure splicer, which allowed him to modify genes and other properties of individual cells.

The promising young student heard about a fascinating experiment being conducted by one of his schoolmates. The goal of the experiment, dubbed Project Warlock, was to determine the true cause of Force sensitivity, and then find a way to mimic it artificially in a test subject. After hearing that more scientists were wanted to assist in the next stage of the experiment, Raehith departed Chandrila along with several of his peers to the planet Kiva, where Taranis Kuhl, the founder of the project, had managed to construct a laboratory in secret using funds from private backers.

Upon their arrival, the students were informed that the studies into the causes of the phenomena had actually already achieved results, with the research team having discovered a particular enzyme found in Force sensitive individuals. Raehith was impressed with the work they presented, and was under the impression that the tests had all been performed on willing volunteers who simply provided blood and tissue samples, and would continue to do so. He agreed to sign on to the project, participating in the newest rounds of experiments while still working toward his degree.

Over time, however, Raehith came to understand that the goals of the project had changed, becoming much more ambitious and with potentially far-reaching consequences. The financial backers in particular began to exert more control over what was being done, insisting that the scientists go further and demanding faster, more efficient results. Taranis' stubborn refusal to rush the process, along with his resistance to their grand ideas, created friction between the researchers and the ones bankrolling the experiment. Finally, Taranis seemed to cave to their demands. While most of the other scientists were led to believe that Taranis was the one who wanted them to push the limits of ethics in order to achieve greater ends, Raehith privately suspected that Taranis was being blackmailed or threatened by the project's backers.

Either way, it didn't matter. Project Warlock moved on into new territory, including experimentation on live subjects of all species, sexes, and ages. Raehith, whose expertise in modifying genes and cells had earned him a place on the team, was now tasked with altering the genetic makeup of living, breathing beings. The initial tests were a spectacular failure, with the subjects suffering from various health problems, including mental illness and psychological effects. So they switched to zygotes and embryos. The guerilla nature of the project meant that they had limited resources and access to medical equipment; the patrons, perhaps trying to assert their dominance over Taranis, also frequently trimmed the flow of cash or delayed payments, forcing them to cut corners in order to meet deadlines and expectations. This meant that there were no artificial wombs to harbor the children created in the lab, only volunteers. While most of these pregnancies and births occurred without complications, a few incidents occurred which were, to put it bluntly, horrific. Raehith's guilt over his involvement would prompt him, in his later years, to only use artificial wombs.

Then, without warning, Taranis left the project. There were signs that he had turned the experiments on himself prior to his flight, but no other motive for his departure could be discerned. Those who remained feared that he had discovered something terrible, and within the first day following his disappearance there was a scramble to leave Kiva. It was then that the patrons revealed their true nature: Project Warlock had, for some time, been a Sith-funded project. Those who attempted to escape were dealt with... but some did manage to get away. In particular, the ship carrying the results of the experiment, consisting of small children and infants, successfully made the jump to lightspeed.

The Sith would eventually track down the vessel and its pilot, a Twi'lek nurse named Zinnia Julep, but the children were never found. Raehith, however, played no part in these events. He had more immediate concerns, particularly how he was going to stay alive. Since he was among those who remained at the lab and didn't try to flee, the Sith were willing to be lenient with him. Still, he knew too much. So Raehith made a deal with them. In exchange for letting him live a long and prosperous life, he would continue to be in their thrall. They could call upon him whenever they wished, and he would do as they asked. Provided they let him live in peace, he would make himself useful to them and keep their secrets safely hidden.

Fifty years have passed since then, and Dr. Raehith Daanruano is still indebted to the Sith. He can never leave the boundaries of their Empire, and within it he is effectively under a non-disclosure agreement. Though he has tried to live some semblance of a normal life, his experiences have had a significant impact on his relationships and psyche. Since he can't speak about what he remembers, he drinks to forget. Even then, most people who know him can tell he's hiding something.
