That's what I thought, but the rules happen to state otherwise. I quote.

Could be confusing. Also happy to help with the NPC's. Just uh, I actually had Sekerian defect with Cyrus. He's the only one though.

Didn't realize it until I was writing my post, but quite unexpectedly for me I realized this battle is basically going to be the culmination of Cyrus as a character.

So yeah, more than welcome for the NPC's and here's to a good event.
