THE PRELUDE
0Ut9qV2.png

The light on a holoprojector panel began to blink, a communication coming through. When it was answered, a familiar face was present, and the serious expression Jand typically wore stared back at Jasper. The Jedi Knight was older, in his late twenties, with a few more scars but the same worn Jedi robes. The blue-tinted individual paused a moment to ensure the call had caught up before he nodded his head and spoke:

"Jasper, it is good to see you. I apologize for any inconvenience," Jand began, as he got right to the point. "Unfortunately, this is not a pleasant call. I have been tasked with finding and detaining Braze for his actions against the New Jedi Order and Master Ko Vuto. Are you aware of these allegations? They are severe; they warrant a trial, and I am seeking your cooperation in bringing him in safely."

Jand meant it; he was willing to attempt to bring the young Jedi in without harm.

However, if Jand's hand was forced... well.

"Do you have any pertinent information that can assist me? Will there be resistance? An angle I can utilize to placate a surrender?"

"I'm aware," Jasper sighed. "I've spent the last month figuring everything out and it's... very complex."

He hadn't slept much at all. Between meeting Braze's biological father Kaito Starfall Kaito Starfall and facing the entity that had possessed his mother, he had a lot swirling around his mind. With threats of detention it was time he relayed everything to the order. This was a call that would demand his full attention.

"When Braze Braze was young, a darkside entity took control of his mother's body," he relayed. "This entity performed a series of psychological exercises that conditioned him to certain stimuli I... don't fully understand yet. He's been brainwashed, in some capacity, to be led by keywords. As far as I understand, he was being groomed to be the entity's new host before his biological father sent him to the order."

Jasper let out a heavy exhale.

"The entity is no longer a threat, but there is an individual that is acting as Braze's handler at present," he continued. "Knight Loomi Loomi made me aware of this fact. She was contacted by Braze and told that this individual had some relationship with his biological family. I would expect them to be willing to use Braze against us..."

His son. Using his son against them. If he got his hands on them, they were as good as dead. Jasper had little tolerance for those who tampered with the minds of others.

Especially his own.

"If this handler cannot be reasoned with, he may have to be neutralized to ensure Braze can be recovered safely."

When Jasper began to explain Braze's past, Jand remained silent and still. He didn't judge, he simply listened. There was truth in his old friend's words, in the claim of complexity, and it seemed that the young Jedi had fallen prey to machinations beyond his understanding; yet, when it came to the dark side, could one truly say they were otherwise?

Nonetheless, Jand continued to listen. He crossed his arms partway through, thoughtful, as he considered options. If Braze truly was acting under the sway of another, that meant he was - in essence - innocent. However, that would rely heavily upon Braze's own recounting and truthfulness regarding the situation, especially when it came to Master Vuto's attack.

"Are you aware if Knight Loomi knows more about this individual who handles Braze?" the Nagai asked, eyebrow raised. "Might she know some of the words? I would avoid saying the wrong thing, resulting in Braze and I having to combat lethally."

Perhaps some information could be further gleaned...

"And should this handler prove a problem, it will be dealt with."

"Their call was cut short," Jasper relayed. "Whatever Braze meant to tell, his line was terminated by whoever has him. I... have reason to believe that Braze may have been acting partially of his own accord, however..."

Jasper paused, considering the best way to relay what he had thought over.

"Knight Loomi stated that when she fought Braze on Coruscant he was rather reserved. Pushing her away, trying not to engage," he explained. "From what I gathered, this conditioning is a means of near total control over him. I believe that this loss of control was used as leverage for compliance. Blackmail, if you will. In order to keep from being forced to kill any of his allies he fell in line. The fact that Ko Vuto is still alive speaks to some level of awareness. If he was fully under this handler's control in the moment, I imagine they would have forced him to kill Vuto. For that reason, this handler may not be immediately prepared to activate Braze and assume total control. It may give a brief window of time to act."

He didn't know how quickly this handler could assume control of Braze. One thing, however, was clear in his mind...

"I should be present," Jasper insisted. "I know best how Braze fights and am fully capable of subduing him if necessary. I failed to keep him from the entity that possessed his mother. It is my fault he was forced to turn on his friends. I have a responsibility to see that my student is returned and that I am the one who comes into harms way if necessary."

ɴᴀɢᴀɪ ᴅᴜᴇʟɪsᴛ
The more Jasper explained the situation, or at least suspicions, the less Jand believed that the detainment would be peaceful. Aside from other unknown factors in play, there were indications of willingness to act in order to avoid killing, and that meant Braze could just as easily decide to kill others he didn't know, in order to keep those he cared for safe. Jedi or not.

"I understand."

When it came to Jasper's warning about the danger of total control, of having a brief window to stop Braze being taken over...

"You know me. I will not hesitate."

Not to mention whatever mystery or intention Braze's handler had.

"I have contacts working on Braze's current location," Jand said, by way of changing the topic from theory to fact. "His involvement on Coruscant has resulted in a path of recordings and logs; difficult to follow, but a path nonetheless. I am expecting word soon."

Jand was not surprised when Jasper took a moment to consider before saying he should be there for the arrest. Jand thought, as he reached up to rub his chin, and considered all the pros and cons of the situation. He came to an answer quickly. It only made sense, really, and would increase the likelihood that Braze would comply to the best of his ability:

"I am unsurprised, but agree. Though I would remind you that I am acting under Order authority, and you are stating liability for Braze's actions." Jand sighed, staring at Jasper. "Knowing you, I hope you do not plan to claim responsibility, as I feel that will be an injustice to your service as a Jedi. The fact of a handler may already provide some leniency for Braze... I ask that you make no rash claims, allow this to go as intended."

The Nagai cleared his throat.

"I will contact you with a location as soon as I am able. Do you have anything further to add?"

THE STANDOFF
0Ut9qV2.png

OSSUS SYSTEM

The T-6 shuttle broke out of hyperspace and started toward the planet Ossus. The vessel had been hired as a passenger liner, a favor from a friend, and had permitted the appearance - and clearance - of a tourist vessel. A droid handled piloting duties, as it sent the required landing codes and sought permission to approach the landing port of Ossus City.

The descent was uneventful, the codes cleared, and before long the transport touched down in the main starport on the forest planet below. The taskforce of Jedi for the mission had been briefed, they knew of Braze's unique situation, his handler, and that Jasper Kai'el would join them to further assist in a peaceful capture. They also knew of the attack on Master Vuto and suspicion of tampering with Coruscant shielding during the attack some time back.

<<"Please secure seating,">> came the droid pilots voice over comms. <<"We will be landing shortly.">>

Jand turned to the other Jedi and raised his eyebrows.

"We all understand this is intended as a peaceful detainment, first. And only turns aggressive with no other option. Also, if this alleged handler attempts to take control of Braze, we do not hesitate, we do not allow his mind to be claimed."

The Nagai glanced around to each. He was dressed in casual clothing, something of a spacer, but with a jacket long enough to conceal his weaponry. For the time being, Jand would rely on bladed weaponry.

"Remember, we are in hostile space. Lightsabers will draw attention. Are there any thoughts or questions, while we have the time?"

"Yep, yep..I hear ya chief." Kellan said off-handedly with a nod of his head ,his primary focus on smoothing the wrinkles out his leather jacket after that long trip into Ossus. He glanced through the rest of their Strike Team right afterwards, remembering their faces so their names would stick in his head. His recent return had been heralded by a Jedi Order which had been gutted, to say the least of their situation.

Kellan had planned on heading back to Naboo after a short trip to see how folks were holding up in the wake of the Galactic Empire's expansion. That had quickly escalated to him returning back to the New Jedi Order, and before he knew it, he was back in the field like the old days, before he'd gave up war to play politics and nobility.

"Remember, we are in hostile space. Lightsabers will draw attention. Are there any thoughts or questions, while we have the time?"

"We've got a contingency on if our bounty hunter friend decides its wise to not turn them over?" Kellan would ask in-between sliding a vibrodagger into his boot, then tucking his blaster pistol into the back of his pants. His lightsaber remained comfortably holstered under his leather jacket until, or if he needed it.

He neglected to make a remark in turn, though his feelings on the matter lay somewhere in those evergreen eyes. Of late, these mounting betrayals had seen their number spread so thin it was turned to a thread. Each their own knife twisting in his back, rending flesh, with Rhyse able to only piece himself back together just in time to march off again. To war, to something else. Detainment, maybe worse, was the least of what deserters deserved in their time of desperate need. It was not his choice to make though with the council gone, it begged the question: who's was it? Perhaps it was in his hands now, or anyone else's here.

"We handle him," Rhyse told Kellan, a knowing look to his gaze.

In unbecoming spacer gear, he toyed with the vibroblade.

Braze Braze existed Between Exile and Hope ; A few denizens of Ossus had been made aware that a young man of short stature with snow white hair pale skin and green eyes had been frequenting the ruins of the Great Jedi Library on Ossus. Several ships had been seen out by the old ruins briefly before they departed.

The ruins of Ossus stretched wide under the afternoon light, with broken spires of the once-great library rising like jagged teeth against the sky. The banners that once fluttered above the city lay in tatters here on the outskirts, abandoned to the creeping forests that now choked the fallen stones.

There was life here still. A small camp was left behind in one of the sheltered courtyards, ash-blackened firepit was evident just outside a ruin's entry way. The faintest trace of cooking smoke lingered where the wind funneled through shattered archways. Someone had been living among the ruins. Recently.

A scattering of fresh footprints cut through the dust where ancient mosaic tile gave way to dirt. Some booted, others softer. A child's stride? Or a youth's? It wasn't entirely clear at first glance. What was clear, however, was that the tracks led inwards toward the hollow shell of the Library.

Somewhere ahead, faint sounds echoed, quickly swallowed by the stones. It almost sounded like a lesson being given… or a story retold.

Amidst the remnants of the encampment, the strike team would notice curious details scattered across the dusty ground. Simple drawings had been traced into the dirt, rough but deliberate, the blocky strokes of Aurabesh letters spelling out lines of the Jedi Code. Nearby, other sketches depicted crude diagrams of lightsaber components: emitters, focusing lenses, power cells... basic outlines, as though someone had been practicing lessons for a novice.

Nothing appeared disturbed. The marks remained intact, untrampled, left with quiet intention.

Beside a cold campfire lay a small collection of shards; A collection of splinters of crystal and fractured glass-like material. Several cracked lenses glittered faintly in the wan light, failed attempts at compound focusing arrays. Whoever had been here was experimenting, learning, teaching perhaps… and had left behind evidence of both success and failure.

The story etched in the dirt and scattered fragments spoke of what had transpired here.
Near the inert fire, the Force seemed to almost hum faintly, like a low chord struck on an unseen string. It wasn't strong, but it lingered... an echo of calm instruction accompanied by patient words guiding another. A trace of presence that suggested someone had poured a piece of themselves into this place.

It felt less like abandonment, and more like a page left open in a book… as though something had been deliberately left behind, waiting to be picked up again.

Among the rocks that surrounded the small inert fire any one with sharp eye sight might catch a glimmer of something poking out.

The Ossus ruins were supposed to be quiet. Ancient, solemn, respectful… Like a mausoleum to all the knowledge lost when the galaxy decided libraries made for good kindling. And at first, they were. That whisper the Jedi felt in the Force when they entered? It had been gentle. Patient. Almost reverent. But the longer they lingered, the more it shifted. Not enough to startle, oh no. Not enough to scream "danger." Just little ripples in the current, like the faintest change in tone during a song, or a smile creeping into a voice that had been serious only a moment before.

The Force had grown… playful.

The signs were scattered around them, though subtle wasn't exactly the culprit's style. Piles of broken stone stacked into crude towers. Dust rearranged to form spirals that mocked sacred symbols. Jagged crystal shards pressed into the dirt to spell out sloppy Aurabesh slurs like "JEDI EAT PASTE." and "THE GRANDMASTER DROOLS… AGAIN!"

It was juvenile. Ridiculous. And yet it thrummed with the same presence that had been haunting the edges of their senses since arrival.

And then she was simply there, slipping into the frame of their awareness, like the whisper had always been hers and the ruins had merely been lending her their mask. Scherezade deWinter leaned against a cracked pillar, one boot braced casually against the stone, dark hair tumbling loose over her shoulders and down her spine as if she had all the time in the galaxy to waste.

She knew they had not come for her. As far as the galaxy was concerned, they probably didn't even know who she was. That was the problem with younglings, sometimes. But that was all right. Her return to the galaxy proper had been gradual enough for things to be a lot less hard than they might've otherwise been.

But they were here for someone that she had branded as one of her new teammates. And if there was something that the Sithling stuck to above almost anything, it was protecting her teammates. Could she be reasoned with? Could she be bribed? Perhaps. Perhaps not. But she knew they were coming, and she knew who their target was. That was all she needed to know.

So, she moved herself to sit gingerly in the center of the once-great-campfire, glowing green eyes gaze dancing with delight.

A pebble lifted from the ground at her feet and began to orbit lazily around her fingers, each rotation pulsing faintly in the Force. The aura in the ruins, that unsettling patience, that deliberate silence… It wasn't Ossus anymore. It was her. Every shift of air, every ripple of tension, every weight pressing against the senses.

Scherezade let anyone who wanted to feel it, feel it. Let them connect the dots in real time.

She was going to have her bite of fun.

Jasper listened intently and followed along. No more words needed to be shared from him. What he had hoped for was a clear confrontation. Instead what they found were the remnants of a campsite. His connection to Braze in the Force made it clear. The young man he had trained was not present.

"Braze is not here."

Among the rocks that surrounded the small inert fire any one with sharp eye sight might catch a glimmer of something poking out.

He slunk ahead, leaning down by the campfire to pluck out a device. It was Braze's, one of the tools he made use of as a Jedi shadow. Scattered about were crystals, lightsaber components, the Jedi code etched into the dirt. Had he been teaching someone? Had he been trying to remember so he could remain grounded? The evidence wasn't clear. The amount of equipment left behind suggested that they may return, however.

"There has to be something else-" Jasper began again, but was cut off by...

So, she moved herself to sit gingerly in the center of the once-great-campfire, glowing green eyes gaze dancing with delight.

That. The swirling disturbance in the Force, followed by the arrival of a darksider to the campfire. Jasper stood back up, glancing back to his allies for a moment before fixing his gaze on the woman again. This was not Braze's handler. Loomi had said it was a him as far as she had been told, and footage of the assault from the Temple seemed to agree. He only had the vague silhouettes of a broad figure to work off of.

So who the hell was this?

"Uh... excuse me?"

Saram's Equipment

Saram had elected to stay behind to watch the camp while Braze Braze and the others had gone to acquire fuel for the trip to Veridia. Someone needed to watch over the location, ensure that no one attempted anything untoward. She didn't quite trust that bounty hunter that he was with, but she had no evidence for that just yet, nothing concrete in any case. Nothing except what Braze had said to her before he'd left. That in particular had set off alarm bells in her head. In any case, now was not the time.

She'd set up a series of 'Haa'yam'ika' Deployable Sensor Beacons around the perimeter, having brought a few with her when she left the Rammikadyc. The sensors weren't overlapping as much as she'd like, but between her armor, her ship and the beacons she had a pretty good makeshift sensor net going. While Saram wasn't carrying her rifle with her at the moment, it was on her back, able to be readied at a moment's notice. Not that it'd do much good in the close quarters of her ship. While the possibility of interlopers had occurred to her, Saram didn't have the slightest idea of what was coming.

Jand finished preparing and turned to Kellan to answer.

It was Rhyse who answered first.

Jand nodded.

They had a simple plan; the more complicated, the more prone to errors or mistakes or something just going wrong. This would remain as simple a detainment as was possible. Besides, the Jedi that had been tasked with the mission were - mostly - prepared to make tough decisions, from what Jand understood of them.

"Let us go."

The ship landed, the ramp descended, and it was time to begin...

SOMETIME LATER --

The state of things on Ossus spoke volumes as to the cost of war. From those able to share information, the group was directed toward the Great Jedi Library, which in itself was barely a ruin, and a shame it was to have lost such a place. Jand had seen cities, worlds even, like this before; the ever-marching war machine laid waste to what it rolled over, giving little regard to those caught along the way, and requiring no permission to do so. Saddening, in some respects.

"Perhaps Braze is nearby," Jand said, as he looked to Jasper. He watched the other pick up an item near the campfire. "His?"

The question remained unanswered, as another presence was revealed, followed by a mysterious woman with bright green eyes. She moved to sit at the campfire, to which Jand's posture shifted and his hands lowered closer to the blades strapped to his thighs. While the individual hadn't presented as overtly dangerous or threatening, that didn't mean covertly she was. Jand spoke, breaking the silence:

"Hello. We seek a sentient that is not you," the Nagai remained focused on the seated individual. "You are welcome to the campsite. We simply request information on a short white haired youth, with pale skin and green eyes. If you know anything, it would help us, and we could continue to leave you to your business."

Jand didn't feel getting involved with the denizens of Ossus was useful to their purpose. There was an aura to the woman, something familiar to what Jand had felt during his time combating Sith along the Alliance borders, and he suspected a Sith was in their midst... there was an underlying menace, a playful glint in the eye, which could indicate an intent to intervene.

It was a fight they couldn't afford, given the importance of events in motion.

But, could they risk a potential Sith being at their backs, should the mission get messy?

vy235Sg.png

Kellan stood behind Jand when the unknown woman's presence was felt across the abandoned campsite, reverberating through the air until their strike team had collectively sensed the individual long before she was spotted with their eyes. His body tensed for the slightest of moments in response, though he elected to not reach for his weapons kept hidden across his body for now.

Regardless of who they were, the stranger had elected to waste a precious opportunity to deplete their numbers while they were unaware of their presence. That either meant they weren't overtly antagonistic to the Jedi's presence, or at the minimum overconfident in their ability to take them all in a heads-up fight.

He was fine with the outcome, either way. If they demanded a bit of attention before the fun began, Kellan would oblige her for as long as she wished. Stepping to the side of Jand, Kellan would move forwards a few steps past their Strike Team's leader. "I hope you don't mind me and my friends checkin' this place out, miss."

He offered up a genuine smile, shifting an arm behind his back as he presented himself in a noble, albeit loose bow forwards. Blue orbs tracked the woman the entire time, watching her eyes until they seeped into his periphery.

He exited the gesture a moment later, stepping away from Jand's side nonchalantly, his hands folding over his chest as if he carried no weight in this world at all. Meanwhile, his fingers rested against the leather where his lightsaber snugly was holsterd beneath it. His eyes remained locked upon her nonetheless, tracking her gaze whilst the feint smile from before rested at his lips.

Even as he circled into the prime position to allow him to assail the mysterious woman-- if diplomacy failed, of course.

The small object did, in fact, belong to Braze Braze . At first glance it seemed almost innocuous, like a lady’s compact for fixing powder atop foundation. A simple little makeup case with a mirror. But upon opening it, its contents revealed something else entirely, a small datapad-like device. One of the spy gadgets from the Vixen's Vault line.

Within, it boasted a myriad of features. Among them, a tracking beacon had been quietly keeping coordinates, occasionally updated through an application on the device. The log showed its most recent location as Bespin; prior to that, it had been on Ossus.

The compact carried a very short but colorful list of contacts, each entry marked by Braze’s own odd sense of humor:

'DUCK', 'Gidgit', 'Ladybug', 'Papa', 'BroKode', 'Denon Police Girl', 'Stone Sister', 'Ali-Cat', 'Mech Menace', 'Green Bean', 'Rainbow Bright', 'Black Wing', 'Security', 'Cold Emotions','Gambino', 'Edge Lord', 'Masked', 'Beskar Baddie', 'BOSS', 'Chop Shop', 'Mr. Nice Guy', 'Flower Palace', 'SEAT BELTS PLEASE', and 'Patch Master',

Saram's Equipment

When the Jetii did in fact trip the sensor net, Saram was indeed surprised. Imperials, scavengers or looters she expected, she did not expect there to be Jetii. In their defense, they were doing their best not to appear to be Jetii, but her ID scanner had already used the data from her sensor fused makeshift sensor web fed to it by her armor's 'Manda' module. Names began appearing across her HUD. IDs the company had access to at one point when they'd worked with the Alliance under the auspices of the Mandalorian Protectors against the Dark Empire. Saram sighed as she paced up and down her ship's cockpit, attempting to steady her mind. Braze was once a Jetii of their order, was he not? Why was the name Jasper Kai'el Jasper Kai'el so familiar to her?

The Dar'jetii sitting at the camp fire however was very well known to her. Her beskar'gam's ID scanner instantly identified Scherezade deWinter Scherezade deWinter without much difficulty. The company had picked up the contract with the CIS right at the start of the whole Agents of Chaos incident. That was a long time ago, however, and neither she nor the company had any real issues with either the organization or the individual. Especially not now, when her reason for being here was unkonwn. After all, with all the others that Braze seemed to know, it wasn't that strange to believe that she might be one of them.

The only one who would know for sure would be Braze Braze , or perhaps Okuma Milogen Okuma Milogen , who knew more than he was letting on. If he was the one who answered when she raised the Mud Duck, she was counting on his own sense of self preservation to put him in a cooperative enough mood to tell her who the shab these people were. Saram walked over to the pilot's seat, pulled up the comms interface and did just that. "Mud Duck, be advised, we've got some visitors, here. A group of Jedi and a single Sith. Do the names Scherezade deWinter or Jasper Ka'el and Jand Talo mean anything to you? Or more importantly, should they be here?"

Her ship was parked a little ways off from the entrance, that was the advantage of a rocket-repulsor pack. Even so, they were well within weapon range of the ship's few remaining weapons. Not that she planned on using them. After all, taking one of them alive would be a preferrable outcome if it turned out that they weren't here with friendly intentions. After all, you didn't send this many Jetii to check in on someone. Saram had lost track of what was going on with the Alliance, with the company seeing no business opportunities there, but she'd bet her considerable paycheck on it having something to do with the Galactic Empire's invasion of the core. The question was, what the haran did Braze have to do with that?

The pebble twirled faster around her fingers, orbiting with a rhythm that seemed to mock the Jedi's measured steps. Dust swirled up from the floor without a hint of wind, carving new spirals that spelled nonsense only she could find amusing. Scherezade let her gaze wander lazily over the group, green eyes glittering. A subtle push of the Force made a stack of broken stones totter, only to right itself moments later. A whisper of sound drifted through the ruins, like the library itself chuckling, but no one could pinpoint its source.

"White hair, green eyes, pale as a ghost,"
she echoed one of theirs' words, voice carrying just enough to tease, "I might have seen someone… Or maybe I imagined it. Depends how much you like to guess."

Her grin widened, teeth flashing as she leaned back on her hands, one boot tapping lazily against a stone. A faint ripple passed through the Force, subtle but impossible to ignore, shadows stretched unnaturally across walls, dust spiralled in tight circles, and the air seemed to press lightly against the Jedi, as if the ruins themselves were watching through her.

"I'll help," she added lightly, tilting her head, "but only if it's my kind of help. Otherwise… well, that pebble might start orbiting more than my fingers, hmm?"

Her eyes flicked to Jand, then to Jasper, then to Kellan, measuring, testing, teasing. She had no doubt that at least some of them were at least somewhat confused. After all, she hadn't attacked them, the area, or even threatened to do any of these things. But if they were coming after one of her teammates, she wasn't going to promise not to. After all, there had been no requests, no asks, nothing. She was here for her own little reasons.

And she was having the time of her life.

"Did you guys bring any food?"
