Cold War?

Then this is a good story opportunity for your character. There are other Force-based organizations out there that are still gung-ho for attacking the Sith and are not tied down to the Republic's politics. I fully expect this move will cause some characters to leave the Republic and some to join it, it's just the nature of paradigm shifts like this. Take it as an opportunity, not the end of the road.

This really isn't an ultimatum type of thing... or it shouldn't be. This isn't just an opportunity to jump ship because the story isn't quite working in your favor.

The test of any truly skilled writer is the ability to adapt to the stories that are give, because we are only the main character in our own story. No one is the main character of the Republic. Not the Grand Master, not the Prime Minister, not the Supreme Commander.

You challenge yourself to be the best writer you can be and if that means a new story that doesn't quite suit you, then you should see it as an opportunity to grow.

Greetings lifeforms.

So I'm new the Republic side of things. This is literally the only character I've made that is attempting to align with that of the GR, but I've been around the board for quite sometime now. I'll mention a few things that are rolling around my brain at nearly 3am in relation to this idea of the Cold War proposal.

To start off with, let's define what a 'cold war' actually is, because it hasn't really be specifically detailed, and some people may not be entirely clear on what it actually entails.

"A cold war or cold warfare is a state of conflict between nations that does not involve direct military action but is pursued primarily through economic and political actions, propaganda, acts of espionage or proxy wars waged by surrogates. The surrogates are typically states that are "satellites" of the conflicting nations, i.e., nations allied to them or under their political influence. Opponents in a cold war will often provide economic or military aid, such as weapons, tactical support or military advisors, to lesser nations involved in conflicts with the opposing country." - source

Breaking this down, it would mean (by this definition) that the conflicts with the OS and the GR would be based on political statements, economic warfare, raids, and skirmishes that are used to break spirit as opposed to take land. As well the surrogate states the definition mentions would be those factions that are allied with the GR and OS. So this would be an avenue for the Primeval and Techno Union to preform raids and skirmishes (non-military) on us, as well our own allies against them. I've not seen this type of warfare done to any fair extent, but it seems like a rather unique angle that I wouldn't mind perusing.

For those of you that believe that you can take on the OS in a PVP stance, or even a military stance enough to thwart them, let me remind you that everything you're referencing has been tried. Long before even Corvus or Taeli were in office, anyone who faces the OS in a conflict of that regard has lost. Mandalorians, Republic, Protectorate..you name it. The OS is a war machine - that is their purpose and they are good at their job. This is a far more tactically advantageous idea - and it wasn't done simply because it was going to be easier for the OS, and give them benefit. If you think about it - this goes against what they are known for. In short it's an olive branch to help drive Story over War.

So my vote on this is a resounding yes.

The Republic is a collaborative. We are a team, we work as a team, we fight as a team, we win as a team, and we lose as a team. No one is keeping anyone else afloat, we float together. It isn't about who has the most people or the best plans, because at the end of the day no single area of our faction could be self-sustainable.

Let's try to keep this topic geared toward feedback on the idea of a Cold War with the OS and leave it there. Other discussions can be had in other forums at other times.

That being said, for anyone who was wondering what sort of events might take place during a Cold War with the OS (as opposed to all out invasions) here is a perfect example:

I don't trust the OS administration on an OOC level, so I'm not sure a Cold War type scenario is going to work out for us. Not that a continued 'hot war' would be any better for us, but still. To my understanding, they're the biggest gamesman-shippers on the board. They wouldn't be in favor of it if they didn't think there was some way to turn it in their favor in a big way.
I'll admit that even though I try to keep an open mind about different possibilities, I'm pretty skeptical about this proposal for the same reasons.

I think that if we're going to do this, we will likely need to come up with an OOC agreement (capable of being enforced by the staff if it comes down to it) on how or if this "Cold War" will end.

Thought I'd also share my opinion on the matter.

And then I remembered I don't have one.

I answered with a yes for the cold war even though I would love to somehow continue a 'hot war' story as well, maybe in the future after the cold war or something. Anyway, I trust the OS leaders and even though I've not worked a lot with them, I find them trustworthy and the story of a cold war could be one of the best things to happen in the recent times of Chaos.

So... I support this idea.

Remind me in two days that I have something to say in regards to all this. I've seen a lot of erroneous and inaccurate assertions made in this thread already, and they need to be straightened out.

To be clear: if an armistice is reached officially IC and any Pubs are caught violating it the Sith will be completely within their rights to resume the war. Not to mention it would be pretty much illegal for the Republic. That's how treaties work.
That's why you hire deniable work... I'm sure there are more than a few Mando'ade that would love to bust some Sith skulls or hamper their work

Popo became faction leader after the Invasion had already concluded, Kiskla, I don't know. She was part of the negotiations so maybe she is just remembering wrong.

Coruscant was negotiated between myself, Daella Apparine, Darth Isolda, Ben Watts, Kiskla Grayson, and Carn Dista(though he left the board shortly after the PM was sent) to be a PVP and story driven invasion. Our request for victory was not sent until after Darron Wraith assisted in the tearing down of the Jedi Temple on Coruscant when it was clear that the Sith had held a much greater effect throughout the invasion.

I can guarantee you that the invasion was not in anyway pre-determined.
