CAPTAIN CHARLES
MIN Stryker | Mahporeem

Private Development Thread | Captain Charles

The message from Mahporeem could not have come at a worse moment.

“Mahporeem to MIN Stryker, we have ships on the way to Doan. Watch for their arrival.”

Charles sighed. Seriously? As he was well on the way there. He made some quick calculations. If Mahporeem was heading to Doan in force there was no need for Vulke and his little reconnaissance mission. His cruiser would be better off exploring other sectors of space. And so with a slight annoyance Charles ordered the ship out of hyperspace and turned right around to head back to Mahporeem.

The crew was briefed en route back, his officers given their orders. Despite some confusion on the abrupt change of plans the crew was ready to go. If Charles could find another map of course.

Charles had practically run off the ship the moment it landed and made a bee line right for the Cartographer’s shop. He left behind a whirl wind of orders resupply, R&R for the crew, Vulke to be safely escorted off the ship.

He made sure to apologize to Vulke before he left. Giving her a brief explanation. Vulke took it with the composure Charles had now come to expect. He always suspected she had deeper plans.

As he entered the shop a familiar voice asked.

“Back so soon?”

“Change in plans, I’m not sure if you heard but Mahporeem is heading to Doan in force. I thought it would be better for me to explore elsewhere while they do their business.”

“Ah, I did notice more activity around the space port than usual.” Responded the Cartographer. “Well makes no difference to me.”

“I’ll get straight to the point. Do you know of any planets in the Deep Outer Rim worth checking out?”

“Hmm, let me think about it for a second.” came the thoughtful response. The Cartographer turned and activated his display table. He zoomed in on a section at the very edge of the galaxy.

“There is a planet out here that is rumored to be the jewel of the Deep Outer Rim but almost nobody has heard about it. Almost more of a myth really.”

“Go on, I’m interested.” said Charles now leaning in slightly.

“A former Imperial stronghold built on a beauty of a planet. Its surface green, water clear as glass, and plains stretching for miles. It stopped appearing on maps for a long time but.” He paused digging through a box at the back of his shop.

“My grandfather gave me this.” He handed Charles a dusty data pad. “Its been passed down through the family for generations. Don’t ask me why, but I found the planet when I last looked though it. Caught my eye because it was not on any of the maps I had seen until that point.”

Charles cautiously opened up the data pad. There it was Castillon, not much on the description besides what the Cartographer already mentioned. Something just felt right. He decided to take a gamble.

“My friend, I think you just found me a new adventure!” exclaimed Charles.

“Hmph, well don’t be disappointed when there is nothing there son. For all I know this planet is centuries gone.”

“Perhaps so.” replied Charles “But if not, let’s just say I will be a very fortunate man.” And with that he turned and headed back towards the MIN Stryker.

The Navigation Officer looked up from his console with an expression Charles recognized. That he was about to say something he did not want to hear.

“Sir, the computer is unable to verify these coordinates I cannot guarantee-”

“Just trust me on this one, use all the verified waypoints you can and work from there.”

“Aye sir”

“Hyperspace jump to Waypoint Alpha on my mark. 3, 2, 1.”

And with that the MIN Stryker was off into the unknown in a flash.

As the Stryker continued on to the various waypoints. First Alpha, then Delta, then Juliet. It became more and more obvious how distant their destination was. The galaxy thinning out around them the further they jumped.

“Its getting awfully quiet out here sir.” Remarked his XO.

“I agree, I mean look at this view.” concurred his Navigation Officer looking out through the bridge windows. “I don’t think I have ever seen this few stars in my life.”

“Maintain course, input final coordinate set.” Ordered Charles quietly.

“Error, coordinates unverified, hyperspace jump not recommended.” chirped the navigation computer in its electronic voice.

A stillness filled the bridge.

Charles looked at the empty space ahead of them. This was it. The greatest find of his career or nothing at all. It was time to find out.

“Override, punch it.” said Charles.

CAPTAIN CHARLES
MIN Stryker | Castillon System

The few remaining stars snapped back into place. Charles looked ahead and saw a dense Oort Cloud. A little beyond that a single yellow star. A candle in the sea of darkness. He had the ship pivot back 180 degrees. The entire galaxy sprawled ahead.

Charles took a long moment to savor the view. A quick glance around him and he could tell others were doing the same.

It was honestly humbling, their galaxy that Republics, Empires, Orders fought so hard to control. Now it was just a disk of gas and stars. There was a strange peace to it, here out on the edge.

“Helm, turn the ship 180 degrees starboard. We are going to try to find a way in”

“Aye sir.”

The Stryker crept cautiously forward. Slowly circling the Oort Cloud for any signs of a path through. It took an hour before they found it.

“There it is sir. Port side nine o’clock low.” Announced his Sensor Officer.

“I see it, Helm take us in.” Responded Charles.

The Stryker carefully threaded the needle between the icy asteroids for what seemed like an eternity before finally breaking free into the system. A welcoming parade of planets sprawled out ahead of them. They passed a deep blue gas giant, then a large stunning purple magenta gas giant with an extensive ring system, passed another asteroid belt and there it was. The gem the Cartographer was talking about.

A large temperate world, blue and green even from this distance. Two moons floated around it like sentinels. The whole bridge went silent, even beautiful seemed too humble to describe it.

As they approached the planet to make an orbital pass sensors began to pick up signatures of life. Someone was down there. Charles felt his pulse go up as the realization hit him.

“There’s a city down there!” Said Charles pointing out the bridge viewport.

“Helm, take us in. See if there is a usable landing pad.”

“Aye sir, brace for atmospheric entry.” Responded his Helm Officer.

Breaking through the clouds only reinforced the thoughts he had from orbit. Green as far as the eye could see, stunning mountain ridges poking up into the clouds and sparkling silver rivers stretching for miles.

Then he saw the lake. It was the largest he had ever seen and perhaps more remarkable than that was the fact that it was so clear. He could probably see the bottom if he was just a little closer. Changing his gaze to the city, the architecture caught his eye. Although now crumbling and overgrown it had clearly once been bustling and magnificent.

He had seen enough.

“Let’s find ourselves a landing pad.”

CAPTAIN CHARLES
MIN Stryker | Castellum | Castillon

"There it is, start Landing Sequence 3." Ordered his Helm Officer, pointing at the cracked overgrown landing pad.

"Landing Sequence 3, aye sir." Repeated the Helm Crew.

Charles continued to observe the city as the Stryker made its descent. The designs mostly recognizable Imperial in origin but there was a grand feeling to it as well. Whoever had built it clearly intended to stay.

Grand colonnaded boulevards now choked with vegetation. Vaulted archways still standing, their Imperial crests barely visible beneath centuries of moss. Tall spires reaching above the treeline as if refusing to admit defeat. All built to last, and it did — just not in the ways the builders intended.

A small jolt indicated that the ship had landed.

Charles had Major Voss organize his Marines. A third of them would stay behind and secure a perimeter around the landing pad. The rest would follow Voss and Charles as they explored the city.

With a hiss of steam the landing ramp lowered. The Marines moved with efficiency offloading heavy weapons and moving to secure tactical positions.

Charles's boots touched the overgrown pad with a crunch as he took his first steps on the planet. He took a deep breath. The air was so pure that he took a moment to savor it. The smell of nature — fresh water, vegetation and old stones. Sure beats recycled ship air he thought.

They decided to take a street heading off the main square toward what seemed like the port district.

"Check this out sir." Charles heard a Sergeant reporting to Voss. "These tracks are fresh, someone was here less than an hour ago."

Another report, this time a Corporal. "Sir, we noticed that a lot of the doors and wiring were missing from those buildings we inspected."

"Stay alert men, we might have company." Ordered Voss calmly.

Charles looked around. The Sergeant and Corporal were right. There were signs of habitation here. Doors missing, wiring stripped, parts of buildings removed. Whoever they were they had been running a sophisticated salvaging operation for some time.

Then they saw it.

CAPTAIN CHARLES

It came into view as they rounded the corner. A makeshift wall about twelve feet high and a gate in the middle flanked by two watch towers. All built from salvaged materials.

Charles saw figures in the shadows underneath the roofs of the towers but they blinked away a moment after. Voss saw them too. He gave a hand signal. Spread out and prepare for combat. Don’t raise your weapons yet though. We don’t want to appear hostile.

The Marines rapidly fanned out to assume tactical positions, taking cover behind various chunks of debris or setting up vantage points in the nearby buildings. Charles and Voss on the other hand walked straight up to the gate. Not too close of course, Charles wanted an opportunity to jump behind cover just in case. Just close enough to talk to whoever came out.

As they waited beneath the gate, Charles took the time to study the construction. It wasn't just shoddy construction, whoever took time to make this certainly knew what they were doing. Pieces of metal had been used to create the frame and had been filled in using makeshift bricks. The watch towers were also metal in construction having wooden railings and roof. Looking back at the gate, he saw it was built using a mix of metal plates.

Finally a creak.

The gate slowly swung open and a man stepped out.

He looked like he was in his late 60s. Charles noted that instantly a community elder. He was wearing a uniform too. Or at least what appeared to be one. There were so many patches that the uniform was more patch than original fabric. Yet the way the man wore it, with absolute precision told a different story.

“We stopped expecting you a long time ago.”

“So it seems.” Responded Charles.

“So tell me son, why are you here now? Said the man in a questioning tone.

“Would you like the short answer or the long answer?” Asked Charles. He didn’t want to bore the man if possible.

“Son, I’m old I have all the time in the world.”

“The Imperials have fractured. The last major Imperial Remnant, the New Imperial Order collapsed, its survivors establishing their own minor remnants across the galaxy. I found your planet through an old chart generations old. I haven’t come with a grand fleet, no grandiose visions, it’s just one ship, one crew and a chance to rebuild.”

The man studied him for a long moment.

“I appreciate your honesty son, and quite frankly that is enough to get around here. Why don’t I invite you in for some drinks. You can meet the rest of my people after.”

Charles felt something loosen in his chest that had been tight since the moment they landed. He heard Voss call a Squad over to the gate. He stepped inside.

The settlement was quite large. Charles could see that clearly now. He could feel eyes on him watching from windows, doors, balconies of the various buildings.

“Don’t mind them.” Said the man. “As you can imagine they haven't seen an outsider in generations.”

“It’s Edward by the way.” He said extending a hand.

“Captain Charles of the MIN Stryker.” Responded Charles meeting it with his own.

Voss had decided to keep the majority of the Marines outside the gate bringing in only one Squad for security reasons. It made sense, Charles didn’t want to come off as a conquering force. Voss, being Voss decided to stay outside with them.

They continued down the street. Eyes following them the whole way. At last they reached a building at the end of the street near the shores of the lake.

“And this is my home.” Said Edward gesturing towards it. “You should stop by in the evening there are beautiful reflections of the moons and Vortex on calm days.”

“Vortex?” Asked Charles.

“Oh forgive me son, Vortex is the large purple magenta gas giant. You know the one with the huge ring system. The moons are called Vigil and Sentinel. I can tell you about the rest of the system later”

“Understood.” Said Charles now interested.

Suddenly, the front door burst open. Charles instinctively reached for his blaster. The Marines instantly raising their blaster rifles.

“Jager! This is not how you greet our guests!” Yelled Edward.

Charles and the Marines lowered their hands.

“Your son?” Asked Charles. Gesturing at the young man who looked to be in his early twenties.

“Yes.” Responded Edward. Turing back towards the door.

“Congratulations, you almost got yourself shot. Come down and say hello.” Said Edward sternly.

“Wait a second Pops.” Said Jager poking his head back inside.

“Don’t be so shy Hannah. Come on out!”

A young woman who looked to be about the same age poked her head out.

“Let’s go!” Said Jager enthusiastically, practically dragging Hannah forward and down the steps with him.

“Is it true you came from out there? From the galaxy?” Asked Jager rather excitedly.

“Yes, the name is Charles, Captain of the MIN Stryker.” Responded Charles returning a small friendly smile.

“Oh and I’m Jager as you already know. The lady over there is my sister Hannah.” He gestured back at Hannah who was standing two paces back.

“Hi.” Came the shy response.

“Jager is 22 and Hannah is 21. Their mom passed away from disease a few years back.” Said Edward.

“I’m sorry to hear that.” Responded Charles.

“Don’t be, she’s in a better place now. Why don’t we head on in. Hannah, can you go and prepare our guests some tea?” Edward suggested pointing back towards the house.

“Of course.” She turned and went back inside.

“We will wait outside sir.” Said the Sergeant commanding the Squad.

“Sounds good, I’ll see yall in a bit.”

Charles, Edward and Jager walked up the porch steps and into the house. Hannah was waiting inside with tea set up around what appeared to be the family dinner table.

“So what's it like traveling through space? “What is that blaster model that you are carrying?” Jager asked.

Charles chuckled inside. He had a feeling about twenty more questions were coming his way.

“The blaster is an Imperial Munitions Heavy Blaster Pistol.” Explained Charles smoothly.

“Looks powerful.” Came the interested response.

“It can accurately hit targets up to 50 meters and cause quite a bit of damage too.”

“As for what traveling through space is like? Why don’t I just show you. A picture is worth a thousand words after all.”

Jager leaned in now clearly invested. He could see Edward looking his way too.

He pulled out his personal data pad and began searching for a picture.

“Ah here it is.” Exclaimed Charles turning the pad around. One of his Lieutenants had taken the picture when they were passing Vortex and sent it to him. He didn’t think much of it besides the fact that it was a good picture but it was definitely coming in handy right now.

“Hannah, you have got to see this.” Said Jager quietly.

She walked around the table to the side where Charles, Jager and Edward were sitting. She leaned over Edward’s shoulder. Her eyes were practically sparkling.

“Pretty cool huh.” Remarked Charles.

“Is that…real?” She asked quietly.

“Of course!” Said Charles. “One of my Lieutenants took it as we were traveling to your planet.”

He looked at her, then Jager, then Edward. All seemed mesmerized by the picture for a moment.

Finally Edward spoke up.

“I believe in you son. This is the biggest opportunity for our planet in generations. I’ll gather the community leaders and whoever else is interested in your proposal.”

“Stay inside for now, I’ll gather everyone here.” And with that he turned and left.

“There is about 20,000 people living here. Forty thousand if you account for the other communities.” Commented Jager.

“Gotcha, where are the other communities?” Asked Charles.

“Uhh.”

“The other two communities live in the Infinitum Plains and the Viridian Hills respectively.” Interjected Hannah quietly. “Each number about 10,000.”

“I see, thanks for the information.” Said Charles respectfully.

“You’re welcome.” Said Hannah now blushing a little.

It took about 30 minutes for Edward to return.

“ I’ve gathered everyone that I could. Just tell them what you told me.”

“Roger that.” Said Charles. Stepping out onto the porch confidently. It’s just like a debrief he told himself as he scanned the crowd.

There seemed to be about a thousand people gathered in front of Edward’s house. The vast majority seemed to be in positions of authority while hundreds if not thousands of others watched from behind them or from their windows and balconies.

A thousand faces stared back at him. Some looked hopeful, others curious, some suspicious. The Squad of Marines lined up in front of the porch looked at each other. Then back at Charles with a trusting expression.

Charles began.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you people of Castillon. My name is Charles, Captain of the MIN Stryker. I’m not here to say that the Empire is back. It’s not. But what I can tell you is that there is a future for you all.”

“Imperial Forces are scattered. The last major Imperial Faction collapsed under its own weight. The survivors scattering to form their own little factions. This is a part of the reason you were abandoned.”

“But perhaps worst of all, you were forgotten! Reduced to a mere myth. I myself was lucky to find yall using an old map passed down through generations.”

“I don’t bring grand fleets, no grandiose visions, just one ship, one crew and a chance to rebuild.”

“What you do with this chance is up to you. I'm not here to dictate your lives. I’m here because you deserve a chance to decide that for yourselves.”

“Thank you for your time.”

Murmuring spread through the crowd like a wave. Reactions were mixed, most seemed positive but there were skeptical looks out there too.

Finally a woman in her forties pushed through the crowd. Arms crossed, she asked.

“Why should we trust you? There hasn’t been a single ship that has stopped by in generations. Why now?”

“You are right to ask that.” Responded Charles calmly.

“After all you were forgotten by the rest of the galaxy during that same time frame.”

“But here’s what I can tell you. I operate with a small Imperial Remnant called Mahporeem. They are in need of a world like yours not to settle but your resources.”

“A planet like yours once restored can become the jewel of the Deep Outer Rim.”

“But in order to become that your people, including you must thrive first. Our interests are the same.”

“To show my good will, I will share with you the supplies I have onboard my ship as well as data pads for tools and equipment.”

Edward whispered in his ear.

“That’s Mira, her family arrived with the first group of settlers centuries ago. They have been farming this land ever since. Convince her and you got all the skeptics on your side.”

“I’ll keep that in mind.” Responded Charles.

He could see Mira studying him, trying to read him. With a hmph she uncrossed her arms slightly.

“I’ll gather some people to see for myself.” Mira said gruffly before swiftly turning away and disappearing into the crowd.

Charles watched her go. Then scanned the crowd once more. Edward was right. If he could win over Mira everyone else would follow.

CAPTAIN CHARLES

Following Mira's departure the crowd slowly dispersed, returning to their homes or whatever they were doing before. But a sense of anticipation now hung over the city. As the survivors anxiously waited for the reports from Mira and Edward's party.

"Outstanding speech sir." Remarked the Sergeant slapping him on the back.

"Dude, sounded so regal." Commented a Private chuckling. "Seriously, though I didn't believe the guys that you could sound like that until now."

"That's the Captain for you." Responded a Corporal. "Always knows what to do."

"Yall are overselling me." Charles said with a laugh. "One second, I'll be right back."

He turned and walked over to Edward who was standing to the side of the patio.

"Edward, I'm going to take my Marines and join up with the rest of the Company outside the gate. I'll wait for your party there. Say bye to Jager and Hannah for me."

"No worries son, but Jager already said he and Hannah will be coming with us. You won't be ditching him so soon." He said with a laugh.

Twenty minutes later and the group was on the move. Charles, Voss and the Marines led the way back towards the landing pad where the Stryker awaited them.

It was completely silent.

Well except for Jager who had asked Charles at least ten questions during the time they were waiting. Edward eventually put a hand on his shoulder. Jager seemed to get the message and was quiet after that.

Charles didn't mind though. He expected this much. Hopefully once they saw he was serious they would change their tune.

He opened up his comlink back to the ship.

"Logistics Officer, get your men to start unloading the spare supplies we have in the 3rd Hangar on the double."

"Right away sir, consider it done." Came the quick response.

When they rounded the final corner leading into the landing pad the Stryker came into view. He heard some of the survivors gasp. Three hundred and twenty five meters of Imperial Cruiser being shown to people who had never seen a flying object besides birds in their lives.

Jager had gone silent for what seemed like the first time in his life. Hannah just stared, her eyes wide with awe.

"That thing flies?" Asked Jager after a long moment.

"Sure does." Said Charles. "Perhaps I'll take you and your sister up sometime. In the meantime though…" He gestured over to the stacked crates.

"Sir, we have unloaded all the crates as requested." Reported his Logistics Officer approaching him.

"Good work." Responded Charles. "Have all the Crew that are not busy come out and greet our guests."

Nobody moved for a long moment. Finally Mira stepped forward and opened a crate. She sifted through the contents carefully like she had done this a thousand times. Then another and another. Medical supplies, food, repair tools, data pads — all were there.

She didn't say a word. But Charles saw her pick up a crate and start to carry it back. Soon the other survivors were doing the same. He could hear the chatter as his Crew and the survivors began to mingle together.

To his left he saw some Marines and burly looking young men engaging in arm wrestling, laughing as they did.

To his right he saw one of his Engineers explaining to an older gentleman how to use some of the tools that were provided. The old man looking intrigued and asking questions.

Charles smiled. A good start he thought.

Edward walked up to him as Mira was picking up another crate.

"That's the closest thing to a compliment you'll ever get from her in the first month." He commented quietly.

"And here I thought she would say thank you." Charles responded sarcastically.

Edward laughed.

"Good one son, it will be a while until you are getting that. But look at the others — they are already believing."

"You were spot on." Said Charles quietly.

It was nice watching the people interact around him. Just normal people going about their lives, no politics, no war, just two groups of people getting to know each other for the first time.

CAPTAIN CHARLES
Castillon

It had been two weeks since MIN Stryker first touched down on that landing pad in the city Charles now knew was Castellum, the former capital. Jager and Hannah had kept him busy, showing him around the settlement, some sites in the ruined city, introducing him to their friends, etc. Edward in the meantime had been able to organize more personal talks with the community leadership, talks that had gone well. Even Mira was starting to warm up a bit.

His Crew had also gotten more integrated into the community. Marines were assessing guard rotations, teaching the basics of hand to hand combat and helping clear the rubble. Engineers advised new construction and building repair with quiet professionalism. Medical Personnel had set up an informal clinic in one of the less damaged buildings. Charles was proud, he hadn’t ordered any of it. They had done it on their own initiative.

“Captain! Captain?”

What is it thought Charles groggily sitting up straight. He had been taking a nap against a tree in Edward’s backyard. He opened his eyes the lake view coming back into view.
He looked up. Jager and Hannah were standing over him excited looks on their faces.

“What is it?” Charles asked.

“Guess what, Pops got word back from the people he sent over to the Plains and Hills communities! Their leaders say they want to meet you.” Announced Jager excitedly.

“Nice, I’ll be sure to thank him.” Charles responded. “Is he coming with us.”

“Nah, he’s got enough to handle here. He already notified their leadership that only we were coming.” Said Jager.

“Perfect, I’ll get ready and let my Crew know.”

With that Charles got up and headed inside to talk to Edward.

That Afternoon | Castillon Road Network

The vehicle that they were riding in was quite peculiar Charles noted as they raced down the road. Charles had originally wanted to bring some of his Officers with him but they had elected to stay behind citing a variety of reasons. Legitimate reasons but Charles was still slightly annoyed by it. He could have used their advice.

Jager was driving what they called a “Roller”. It was open topped, had four wheels and an engine in the back propelling the two rear wheels. The baggage was loaded in the front via a folding hood. He honestly kinda liked it except for the fact that the ride was quite bumpy. Probably due to Jager’s driving.

“Slow down please!” Begged Hannah who was sitting in the seat next to the driver’s position.

“No can do! Gotta make it before sundown.” Responded Jager with a laugh.

“This is way over the required speed. You are gonna kill us all!” Retorted Hannah sharply, gripping her arm rest tightly.

“Fine, I’ll slow down ok?” Said Jager with a huff. “Can’t have any fun with you around it seems.” He muttered.

“What did you just say?” Came the angry response.

Charles chuckled to himself amused. A memory came to mind, one time Banks and him had taken some speeder bikes from the training grounds at the Academy and raced them though the streets on a particularly quiet evening. Charles smiled, he remembered the exhilaration, the air hitting his face as they zoomed past the Academy’s buildings.

“Guys, the last thing you want to be doing while piloting any kind of vehicle at these kinds of speeds is arguing. That leads to a loss of focus, a loss of focus leads to an accident. Get what I’m saying?” Said Charles interjecting before it got too heated.

“Alright, alright.” Said Jager quietly. “We should be there in forty five minutes anyways.”

Hannah said nothing, she simply turned her head away to look at the surrounding nature but not before Charles caught a glimpse of a satisfied smile.

Don’t be too satisfied Hannah, a few years ago I would have been on his side. At least before I was handed responsibility thought Charles.

The Roller got quiet for a while. Charles took the time to observe his surroundings. According to Jager and Hannah they were currently using one of the many old road networks that the original colonists had built on the island. Most of them were in disrepair but the ones that connected the three survivor communities were maintained for trade and communications sake.

Outside the beauty of Castillon stretched in every direction, Fortis’s light danced off the river to his right. To the left were green hills with vibrant patches of wildflowers. In the distance he saw a huge mountain, its peak not even visible through the clouds.

I could honestly live here forever thought Charles.

Forty Five Minutes Later | The Infinitum Plains

“And…We are here!” Announced Jager hopping out of the Roller.

Charles got out as well, taking a moment to take a well deserved stretch break. He looked around.

So they weren’t exaggerating when they said it stretched to the horizon Charles thought looking at the vast expanse ahead of him. Green and Gold grass for miles only broken by the occasional river or building.

“The Infinitum Plains isn't like ours where its nice and consolidated. The community is spread out over miles. They do however hold frequent community meetings in that building over there.” Explained Hannah pointing over to a large stone building.

“I see.” Said Charles looking over. He could see people already waiting outside ready to greet them. “Shall we get going?”

“It’s great to finally meet you Captain!” Boomed who Charles assumed to be the community leader. He was a muscular man in his fifties, his skin rough and tanned from hours in the field, a thick mustache under his nose. Charles noticed the clothing style of choice here was different from those in the Castellum community more informal, more rugged. He respected it, some of his buddies from the Academy had come from farming worlds.
He reached out his hand, the two men maintaining eye contact as they exchanged a firm handshake.

“The name is Garrcus, it’s a pleasure to have you here.” Said Garrcus warmly.

“Likewise.” Responded Charles, before Garrcus turned his attention to Jager and Hannah.

“Jager, Hannah! Y'all have grown so much! It’s been like five years since I last saw you two. How’s your old man doing?” Asked Garrcus.

“Doing good, he said he wished he could come but unfortunately he had a lot of stuff to take care of.” Said Jager with a smile.

“Pah, don’t worry about it. Lets go inside. My wife has already prepared food for us.”

Charles was taken aback, he was expecting to have to engage in some diplomacy but the way the Garrcus had just taken him under his wing caught him off guard. A pleasant surprise, at least I don’t have to waste time sizing him up and doing all that diplomacy mumbo jumbo thought Charles with a sense of relief. He followed Garrcus inside.

Charles felt his mouth start watering as the pleasant aromas hit his nose. He had been seated between Hannah and Jager at a long family dining table with the rest of the community leaders. Garrcus had waited for everyone to sit down before taking his place next to Jager at the end of the table.

“It’s so nice to have visitors.” Said Garrcus’s wife as she served out food in front of the seated people. “It’s Brynn by the way.” She said with a smile.

Charles looked at the food. It looked amazing. Beef steak with potatoes and bread on the side. He genuinely could not wait to take a bite.

“The best steak on the planet.” Said Garrcus proudly noticing Charles’s expression.

Charles cut himself a slice and took a bite. The taste rivaled some of the steaks he had been served at luxury restaurants. He took another bite before responding.

“I can’t say I disagree.”

Garrcus laughed, his booming laughter echoing through the dining room.

“Feel free to have more son. There is more than enough for everyone to have seconds.” Responded Garrcus.

Charles finished his plate. He glanced around and saw the others were finished as well.

“Edward, has told me a lot about you.” Started Garrcus his tone more serious. “He told me about what you said to him but I want to hear it from your mouth. What exactly do you have in mind for Castillion?”

Charles sensed all eyes turning towards him. His answer here would make or break this meeting. He paused a moment before responding.

“Answer is simple, I want yall to prosper so I can restore this planet to its former glory. In exchange my faction and I wish to use it as a base and for yall to export a portion of your food to the faction’s homeworld of Mahporeem.”

Garrcus leaned back in his chair, studying Charles for a long moment. Then nodded.

“I respect men who mean what they say. It shows character.”

“Elaborate more on the prosper bit. Gives me an idea on what we can do to help.” He said gesturing towards the other community leaders who nodded their heads in agreement.

“Phase One starts by…” Charles explained his plan careful to not turn it into a hour long presentation. He explained how the communities needed to unify under one solid structure, how that structure would be the beginning for a planet wide government, how that government would organize the restoration with the support of Mahporeem and so on.

Garrcus seemed interested leaning in from his chair along with the other community leaders. Brynn had even stopped washing dishes listening as well.

Garrcus was silent for a long moment. Then spoke his tone now more casual.

“I’m in, I assume Edward and the rest of the Castellum community are as well?”

“They are, although some are more hesitant like Mira.” Charles responded.

“Ah Mira.” Started Garrcus recognition flashing in his voice. “Her mother was like that too before she died, always the sceptic. Drove me nuts sometimes.” He said with a laugh. “Last I heard she fell in love with a guy in the city and left, that was twenty years ago. Glad to see she is doing ok.”

That explains a lot thought Charles.

“Yeah, it took me a lot of time and effort to win her over but she finally seems to be warming up to the idea.” Said Charles slightly exasperated.

“Pff, if you think Mira was difficult you should have met her mother.” Responded Garrcus laughing.

“I’m glad I didn't.” Said Charles the two men now laughing together.

“It’s getting late gentlemen.” Interjected Brynn. “Charles, Jager, Hannah? Yall should stay the night. I’ll get your Roller into the yard. The rooms are upstairs.”

“You’re right honey.” Said Garrcus. “It was a good talk, yall are dismissed to let your communities know. He said gesturing to the other leaders who started to leave.

The three said their thank yous and headed up to sleep with their bags. Charles felt great. It was always nice to meet such friendly people and even better they were onboard. He felt his eyes closing, his mind drifting away. What a great day he thought before closing his eyes.

Following Afternoon | The Viridian Hills

“Welcome to the Viridian Hills Captain. My name is Lyra, the leader of this community. It is a pleasure to have you here.”

“Thank you.” Said Charles.

Lyra appears to be in her early forties and despite the age that was starting to show on her face seemed pretty in shape.

“Jager! You have gotten a lot bigger, you handsome young man.” She said affectionately. “And Hannah! You get more beautiful every time I see you.”

Jager grinned clearly, enjoying the praise.

“Thank you Lyra! Must have been that new workout routine I learned from the Captain over here.” He said with a laugh.

“You were pretty fit already, you just needed direction that’s all.”
Charles said humbly.

Lyra nodded before turning back to Hannah.

“And what about you young lady? Found any boys to be your fancy? Your father was complaining that you were spending too much time at the library last I spoke to him.” Said Lyra half seriously.

Charles heard Hannah make a small noise. He looked over, catching himself just before he laughed. Hannah was beet red. She tried to hide it by looking down and covering her face with her hands. Then by turning away. But that just made it more obvious much to Jager’s delight.

“I guess that was the wrong question to ask.” Lyra said, looking at Charles with a knowing grin. “Anyways, we should get going to the meeting site. Everyone’s already waiting for us.”

A large statue dominated the open meeting area which was little more than a circular stone platform surrounding a hill top spring. Rock pillars with flower vines surrounded the platform making for not only some nice architecture but also great views of the surrounding hills.

“That’s the statue of Delila Castillon Delila Castillon . She was one of the planet’s saints. Legend says she was the reason we survived the plague.” Hannah whispered having seemingly recovered enough from her embarrassment.

“Gotcha.” Said Charles studying the architecture of the statue. It was a carving of a lady, twelve meters in height and intricately detailed. “Whoever built this has some serious skills.”

“Funny thing is nobody knows who exactly built this besides an ancestor of our community.” Said Lyra. “The platform we are on right now was built around the same time. Just some interesting tidbits of history for you.” She turned back around to the assembled leaders.

“Thank you for coming here on short notice. As you may know by now this is Captain Charles who arrived here about two weeks ago.”

“Thank you for having me.” Responded Charles.

“Let’s get down to business.” Said Lyra. “I have already heard a lot about you from Edward and what you plan on doing. Our community is prepared to accept your offer provided you answer some questions we have first.”

“Of course, ask away.” Said Charles smoothly.

“As you may have already figured out the communities have an informal but important arrangement. Our community stewards the water supply and wildlife, the Plains provide the food, while the city provides technology and culture. You say you want to develop Mahporeem. Now that’s fine and all, but what are you going to do to prevent the polluting of the nature we work so hard to protect?”

“That is an excellent question. My plan dosen’t actually require any major alterations of the planet’s surface. Cause with my faction’s support we will actually be getting the materials from…up there.” Answered Charles cooly while pointed up at the sky.

“From where?” Asked one of the leaders confused.

“From the other planets and asteroids. Thanks to technology that you are not familiar with, but will be soon. All of our building materials will be mined there to be either transported here to the surface for construction or sent to Mahporeem to be refined and assembled into usable components. And no you will not have to worry about settlers or the cost. I will handle that.”

Lyra was the only one who maintained her composure. She paused looking at Charles before cracking a smile.

“I like your confidence kid. The plan looks solid to me but I’m the kind of person who prefers learning about the person behind the project too. Tell me about yourself. I’m all ears.”

“Well, do you want the short summary or the whole autobiography?” Asked Charles slightly uncomfortable he wasen’t really the person who shared more personal details than required.

“Normally I would say the short version but I like you already. Let’s hear the full story.” Responded Lyra with a smile.

“I was born on the Core World of Corulag to an average Imperial Family. My father was a mid-level civil servant while my mother stayed at home to raise me. I was an only child so I spent a lot of my time studying military history and hanging out with the Grandpa who was a Imperial Army Veteran. He’s the one who inspired me to join the military.”

“Thanks to my grandfather’s connections he was able to get me into the Imperial Academy at age thirteen, a year early, before he died. It was unprecedented, my mother tried to stop him but then he died and well…She felt that she had to follow her father’s last wishes.”

“The Corulag Sector Naval Academy was some of the best and worst time of my life. Back then you would have not recognized me at all.” Charles narrated looking at Jager and Hannah who stared back wide eyed.

“Although it was my grandfather who ultimately got me in. I was already considered a protege amongst my teachers. I thought I knew everything because I read about it. I was cocky, aggressive, even reckless. But everytime I got in trouble I was able to weasel my way out of it. It made me think I was invincible, boy was I wrong.” He said with a chuckle.

He paused observing the room. Lyra and the gathered leaders sat still attentive. Jager looked like someone had stomped on his birthday cake. Probably didn’t expect me to be like you once thought Charles amused. Hannah just watched, only interrupted by an occasional look at the ground. He continued, taking a deep breath before speaking again.

“My first weeks there were pure hell. There was nobody to outsmart and nowhere to run. I went from being the know it all genius to the bottom of my class. Although my buddies tried to help me they could only do so much against the relentless tide of upperclassmen who loved to target me due to my age.”

“My situation could be described as similar to a bad swimmer not drowning but not making much progress either. There were times I genuinely wanted to quit, only to be stopped by my pride and promise to my grandpa. Then about two months in everything changed. I was sitting alone enjoying my sliver of free time when one of my Company’s platoon leaders came up to me. I thought I was doomed and braced myself for a smoke session but instead he sat down next to me and started to talk to me.” Another breath.

“His name was Banks and was the man who made me who I am today. He was my mentor and the older brother I never had. He would help me catch up on school work, spend his free time teaching me Cadet stuff I struggled with and just hangout with me. Made me feel like a human again. Thanks to his efforts I gradually improved and graduated at the top third of my class with high marks tactical theory and military history.” Charles paused for a moment trying to hold back his sadness. Telling this part was going to be difficult.

“The Battle of Harrun IV changed everything.” His voice getting quiet. “I was assigned to the Arquitens Class Cruiser IMS Relentless part of Task Force 132 of the New Imperial Order. I had met up with Banks again who, to my great surprise, was a Commander on the same ship. We saw action together against a rebel aligned group called the Ash Confederacy and were quite successful until that fateful order.” Charles paused.

“Attack the Rebel Base at Harrun IV. Captain Varen Ostell our commander.” Said Charles bitterly. “Despite objections from his officers including Banks, ordered us to charge straight into heavy defenses. That by the way had been reported by intelligence. As soon as we dropped out of hyperspace things started to go downhill. Heavy Confederacy fire tore into our ships. The IMS Devastator was blown to bits almost immediately, more would follow. It wasen’t long before enemy boarding parties were aboard our ship. We fought desperately side by side me, Banks, the rest of the Crew holding off wave after wave of enemy troops in hand to hand fighting. Blood stained the deck and the bodies started to pile up.”

“Then it happened. A single blaster bolt struck him in the chest. He collapsed instantly. I tried rushing to his aid but an enemy trooper got in my way. I lunged my vibro knife in hand, I didn’t have time for anything clean so I went for a tackle. We fell to the ground rolling, grappling. He managed to cut my face but I managed to stab his throat. Banks died in my arms.” He finished quietly. He felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned to look, trying to put away those painful memories. It was Hannah who seemed to have done it unconsciously because when he looked she took it off instantly a shy look on her face. He appreciated the gesture.

Lyra broke the silence.

“He would be proud of who you have become.”

“Thanks.” Said Charles genuinely grateful. “I only wish he were here to see it.”

“Anyways, back to the story would you guys like to hear the rest?”

“No I think we have heard enough for today.” Said Lyra warmly. “My community is in.”

CAPTAIN CHARLES
Castillon | Rebuilding

The roller was quiet on the way back but not in an awkward way. It was the kind of silence that preceded in important event and for Charles, Hannah and Jager it had the potential to be historical. Historical not just for an individual community but for the entire planet. Charles’s plan had been approved.

When the three returned they instantly told Edward who was elated and more than ready to get to work. He and the other community leaders implemented a sophisticated communications system of runners in order to send messages quickly and coordinate better. Perhaps most importantly Mira was now fully onboard bringing the last few sceptics into the fold. Charles still remembered the moment.

“So you actually did it huh.” Mira had said during a community leadership meeting.

“Fine, fine, you have convinced me. What can I do to help.” She had said still slightly begrudgingly.

Charles let himself smile slightly. That was probably the second most satisfying moment during his time here outside of accomplishing his actual mission. But now it was time to get to work.

Out of Character Note: Time for a montage/timelapse!

Thanks to the trail Charles and the Stryker blazed the Mahporeem’s ships arrived quickly, settling into orbit around Castillon or in the asteroid belt to begin the mining process. Progress was swift and larger ships would soon arrive to begin mining operations on Cinder and Forge. Mahporeem was no stranger to these types of operations due to its extensive experience with scrapping. Creating building materials was similar: Collect, refine, sanitize, use, thats all it took.

The Space Port was rebuilt first. A necessary step as its completion allowed the flow of materials and tools to increase rapidly. The Stryker’s and Mahporeem’s engineers were hard at work as well planning out and supervising construction. The labor was handled by the Castillionians, something they had insisted on saying it was the least they could do.

Castellum’s main square was rebuilt soon after along with the road sections that linked the communities together. Finally after centuries, the roads became less like forgotten trails but more like actual bustling arteries that linked the growing and increasingly interconnected communities.

It wasn't long before essential infrastructure was also restored partially thanks the the simplicity of the plumbing system which required no filtration whatsoever thanks to Castillion’s water purity. Engineers cleverly designed the system so each house or block had its own dedicated sewage storage system which kept the water clean and fed the waste into a central facility at the space port. From there the waste would be transported off world before being disposed of. Charles recalled having a Lieutenant telling him of people literally dancing as their heaters and lighting came online for the first time.

Basic comms were restored as well. Not the facility on Mount Maximus, that would be a different beast to tackle. With short link comms providing instant and real time communication between the communities the runner network was disbanded much to Garrcus’s disappointment who complained loudly but without conviction that he would miss seeing people in person.

Last but not least of course, a shield generator and about a quarter of the original defense placements had been brought back online. Their future personnel undergoing training from Major Voss and the Marines.

There was still work to be done. Work that would probably take years, entire districts of Castellum still lay in ruins, the Hills and Plains communities were now just receiving their proper infrastructure and the defense network was still only a fraction of what it was. The communications station on Mount Maximus still remained silent a challenge that would still need to be tackled. But progress was steady and even with such a small total population Charles felt confident that work would be completed quickly.

The people of Castillon felt no differently. For the first time in centuries, they were not just surviving. Every house lit, every gun made operational, every tile placed on a road meant the planet was getting its dignity back bit by bit. To them getting that little bit of pride back meant everything and they would not forget who allowed them to access it again.

CAPTAIN CHARLES
Castillon | Departure

Hour Before Departure | Edward’s House:

“Yall don’t have to see us off you know.” Said Charles half jokingly. He knew very well that he did not have a choice in this.

“The work can wait.” Replied Edward flatly. “Every Castillionian wants to at least see your face before you and your ship depart.”

“Yeah, especially since you are pretty much family to us.” Added Jager. “By the way…I think someone wants to give you something before you leave.” He added a bit tauntingly.

“And who’s that?” Asked Charles.

“My sister of course! Hannah you better have those cookies ready. Now or never!” Yelled Jager towards the kitchen.

“Wait!” Came the somewhat frantic response.
Hannah burst from the kitchen, a cart full of cookies in tow. Charles instantly noticed her dirty apron still covered in flour and loose hair. Clearly those cookies were her main focus of that morning.

“I count exactly 850 cookies.” Noted Charles.

“How long did it take for you to make all these?” He asked now slightly impressed.

“Well, do you know how she said she was “tired” yesterday afternoon? Yeah, that was the cover story for this. She woke up at like 0500 this morning.” Answered Jager an amused look on his face.

“Damn, that’s some dedication right there. The Crew and I give our most sincere thank you. I’ll be sure to have these distributed once we enter hyperspace.” Said Charles.

“I gotta say good bye to the other community leaders. See you guys right before we leave?”

“Of course.” Said Edward before Charles turned and was absorbed into the gathering crowd.

15 Minutes Before Departure | The Stryker’s Landing Pad:

“Are you sure I can’t come along?” Asked Jager for the twelfth time.

“Positive.” Responded Charles matter a factly. “You guys got a lot of work here to do already and besides the community is already starting to look to you to leadership.”

“Fine, just you wait though. By the time you get back I’ll be a man worthy of joining you amongst the stars.”

“Looking forward too it.”

Jager opened his mouth like he was about to engage in some more friendly banter, but then closed it when he caught sight of Hannah.

Hannah was standing slightly back, a sad expression on her face. She was trying to hide it like when she felt any negative emotion but the dam broke anyways.

“I’m gonna miss you.” She said softly. “Just please… come back as soon as you can.”

“I’ll miss yall too, don’t worry.” Responded Charles cheerfully trying to lighten the mood. An attempt that clearly failed when he noticed the first tear sliding down her face.

Charles rummaged though his belt pouches before finally pulling up his spare data pad. It was the one he was going to give to Edward’s family and the one he had been using to take pictures and save data while he was here. Most of that data had been shared with his personal data pad but he hoped this would help.

“Look, take these.” He started handing Hannah his handkerchief and the data pad. “All the memories we made together.” He said making a sweeping gesture to include everyone. “You won’t miss me one bit.”

She wiped the tears with the handkerchief before responding.

“You promise?”

“Yeah, there will be so many that by the time you are done looking at all of them. I will have returned.”

She sniffed. Then suddenly grabbed his hand.

“Uhh what are you doing?” Asked Charles now confused.

“Just wanna feel your hand one last time.” Responding Hannah before letting go. He could see Jager smirking, even Edward cracked a small smile.

“Alright, well I gotta get going. I’ll see yall later.” Said Charles before turning to climb the boarding ramp. He waved one last time, to them, to the crowd before the ramp raised up fully and he was gone.

The Stryker’s three massive engines ignited bright blue and the ship slowly lifted off the ground. The roar was deafening. The crowd watched until the ship wasn't visible anymore. They didn’t hear Hannah who softly said to herself. “I love you.”

CAPTAIN CHARLES
Castillon | Development Montage Part One — Castellum

After the departure of the MIN Stryker, the Castillonians and the newly arrived Mahporeem work crews got to work to restore the planet on the double. Every able-bodied Castillonian was hard at work, highly motivated to restore their planet to its former place in the galaxy and once again take their place amongst the stars. The Mahporeem work crews were equally motivated — for them it was an opportunity to expand Mahporeem's influence throughout the Deep Outer Rim and bring the food crisis under control. Although their numbers dwarfed the Castillonians they remained respectful of their hosts on strict orders from Mahporeem's High Command. Together they doubled the pace of progress.

Castellum

The city was nearly entirely redesigned from the ground up minus the historical district which would contain Castillon's Grand Archive. It was a massive building, six stories in all, three underground and three above ground. It was something all the community leaders insisted on being a priority to complete.

Immediately after its construction all surviving historical records were carefully catalogued and put on display inside.

But something was missing.

Jager and Hannah were welcoming a newly arrived transport of Mahporeem workers when one of the engineers, Lt. Condor, approached them.

"Hey, you two are Jager and Hannah right?" Condor asked.

"Yes we are!" Responded Jager enthusiastically. "We are happy to have you here!"

"Thank you. I heard a rumor from our commander that Captain Charles was given command of a new ship and squadron. Also that he took part in the defense of Mahporeem against a powerful Rebel attack."

The engineer had barely finished his sentence when Hannah blurted in.

"Is he alright!?"

"Not sure, rumor was the Stryker was one of the first ships to meet the assault and took a heavy hit." Responded Condor, shocked at such an emotional response.

"Either way, I gotta get going. Catch y'all later." He said over his shoulder as he walked on to the worksite.

Hannah held herself together for approximately ten seconds until he was out of sight. Then she sprinted into the nearest alleyway.

"Hey sis, you alright?" Asked Jager, slightly concerned. He was out of breath too. Hannah had run really quick — a pace she could never manage normally. All the more concerning.

Hannah was leaning against the wall of the closest building, pretty much hyperventilating. She was holding her head in her hands.

"I'm fine, wait no I'm not fine." Responded Hannah in between breaths.

"Look, this is Charles we are talking about. I'm 99% sure he's perfectly fine."

"It's that one percent that I'm worried about! What if he's injured? What if it's bad? What if he's dead!?"

"He's not dead Han." Said Jager warmly. "I'm sure he and his crew are out at some bar in Mahporeem right now celebrating their lucky escape."

She sniffled.

"Bar!? What if there are girls there." Asked Hannah indignantly.

Jager sighed. Even though he was the older one he had always been less mature than his sister. But now it was time to play the big brother.

"Look Han, it's like you have never been around him at all. You of all people should know his awareness levels around women. I bet a girl could say flat out that she loves him and he would still think it wasn't real."

She laughed. A small wet laugh.

"I know…HEY! What are you trying to say?" She yelled while simultaneously grabbing his arm.

Jager turned his head before rolling his eyes. An angry Hannah was not someone he wanted to deal with right now and if she had caught a glimpse of his face he was sure she would be pissed. But it was confirmation of what he suspected. She had a crush on Charles, and evidently it was a massive one.

He was tempted to tell her that he knew and tease her, but then a much better plan came to mind. I'll keep this to myself for now, he thought. The only other person that for sure knows is Lyra. The moment I get off I'm going to talk to her about it.

He turned his attention back to the moment.

"Look Han, let's just calm down for a minute. Pops said we gotta stay here until all the transports arrive. That means until 1500."

Another sniff.

"Alright, alright. But as soon as we get back I'm going to demand that we start work on the communications array on Mount Maximus."

Jager laughed.

"Ok, sis. Whatever you say." He replied before they headed back out to greet the next transport. She really does love him was his last thought before he got back to work.

Thanks to the efforts of both Castillonians and Mahporeem work crews and their machinery, the city would be the first part of Castillon completely restored. The spaceport was expanded along with the main square. An advanced waste management system was created along with a new public transportation system. Finally the historical district was beautifully restored, its centerpiece the Grand Archive rising at its heart.

Edward, Garrcus and Lyra decided they would leave an entire floor of the Grand Archive dedicated to Captain Charles and the crew of the MIN Stryker. The people who had come when nobody else knew Castillon existed. The people who had stayed long enough to matter.

Something to remember them by — and something to tell them, whenever they returned, that Castillon had not forgotten.

Castellum would soon return to becoming the bustling population center it once was. Its new high rises being filled slowly yet surely by the rising population. Children who had never seen a building taller than three stories stood in the main square and looked up. Restaurants and Markets opened up. The city was alive again.

CAPTAIN CHARLES
Castillon | Development Montage Part Two — The Great Plains

Garrcus was feeling great. He always did. But now he actually had a real reason to. His community, now officially a sector, was growing, not in terms of size, they had enough of that, but in population. His scattered small towns were growing and farming more efficiently than ever thanks to new technology and equipment from Mahporeem. His first proper harvest was due soon and it was already shaping up to be quadruple the size of his previous record.

When the harvest came in Garrcus could only feel elated.

"Look at this!" He exclaimed to Brynn. "It's the biggest thing I have ever seen!"

"Yes, it is honey." Said Brynn warmly. "I can't wait for the guys from Mahporeem to eat our bread."

"No kidding, I don't think they could eat anything back home after they try some of this." Concurred Garrcus, still looking at the grain.

They were looking at the storage barrels collected from each town. The system was genius. He and his community leaders had spent days designing it but they had only been able to implement it thanks to the equipment from Mahporeem.

Each town had a separate collection system, all the same in terms of design but kept separate. After the harvest their storage containers would be picked up by transports and taken to the sector capital, Garrcus's town, also the largest, for processing. From there the grain would make its way across Castillon through the road network and the newly established agricultural cargo service, a fleet of large transports provided by Mahporeem. The system allowed for maximum efficiency and could be adjusted each year based on the size of the harvest.

Garrcus and Brynn were personally there to watch their first off-world shipment of grain to Mahporeem.

"It almost brings a tear to my eye." Said Garrcus watching the bulk freighter lift off. "Our grain and meat being enjoyed by someone off this planet."

"Oh honey." Said Brynn putting her hand on his shoulder. "It's just wonderful to see. I even had some datapads added in with our favorite recipes. One of the military guys said they would be distributed to official shops and restaurants selling our products."

"Really? That's just amazing honey. I can't wait to see the reviews." Said Garrcus as the freighter climbed into the evening sky and disappeared amongst the stars.

CAPTAIN CHARLES
Development of Castillon Montage Part 3 | Viridian Hills |

Lyra was reading the development reports when Jager burst into the room. Things were going well just as she planned. The Viridian Hills were the last to receive the technological advancements provided by Mahporeem due to their distant and scattered nature but Lyra wasn't concerned, in fact that was what she intended. Her community had always been more deeply rooted in ancient tradition than the others and even though she welcomed the new technology she intended to preserve what she could.

We will always continue to practice the traditional agricultural techniques and water stewardship. I’m going to compile all our techniques and send them to Edward. It would be a nice exhibit in the Grand Archive if I do say so myself. She thought to herself with a hint of satisfaction. She was about to get started when Jager blasted through the door. Her head instantly snapped towards the door, her piercing glare catching even Jager off guard.

“Young man, I thought you had Officer Training today?” Lyra started a little irritated.

“Nah, it was canceled and besides I think you want to hear what I’m about to say”

“And what is that. I was quite occupied before you barged in so it better be important.”

“Oh it is, don’t worry.” Said Jager with a knowing smile.

“Don’t even tell me, it’s Hannah isn't it.” Lyra said catching the hint easily. She started laughing. A genuine real laugh, not the one she used when she was being polite.

“Bingo! Can you believe it, Hannah the bookworm falling in love. The one who always insisted she was too busy for boys. The one who preferred to read history and fantasy books while her friends were out partying or on dates.” He joined in on the laughter.

“Don’t forget scaredy cat and petrified of strangers.” Added Lyra. “I still remember the visit with Sena, Tess, Bex and Wren. That was a night to remember.”

“It was so good…” Started Jager reminiscing. “Sena and I planned it so well, and thanks to Tess going on and on about her date Hannah was in perfect condition to get spooked. She damn near pissed herself.”

“Not great for me.” Responded Lyra. “I had to stay up all night because Hannah kept insisting she saw figures in the darkness. Those were the days.”

They were quiet for awhile, thinking about the past before Charles and the MIN Stryker appeared overhead.

“You know she was intimidated by Charles at first too.” Said Jager quietly.

“I bet she was.” Replied Lyra matter of factly.

“So, the inside scoop. What happened today.” She asked, though she already had an idea of what it could be.

“Well, you were there for Charles’s Departure right?” Started Jager.

“Of course, how could I miss it. The tears, the handgrab. That man is too innocent sometimes. I don’t know how he completely missed it.” Replied Lyra.

“I know, I know, any one of my friends would have asked her out on the spot if they got a reaction like that.” Said Jager.

“Well there was another incident today. It all started when Condor was giving us some news on Charles. Some rumor about him getting a new ship and command. Also a battle near Mahporeem, that Charles participated in.”
Lyra sighed. She already knew where this was going.

“Let me guess, she completely ignored the ship and command and went directly to “Is he alright?”, I expected as much.”

“You got it!” Said Jager. “But it doesn't end there. When I tried to calm her down I mentioned that Charles and his Crew were probably at a bar celebrating their lucky escape. She instantly switched to jealous mode.”

Out of Character Note: Yes, Charles and his Crew were at a bar. Were there any women with them, NO. It was in fact a boys night.

Lyra laughed again.

“Of course she thought about other girls. The romance novels got to her.”

“Yeah, I had to remind her, quite strongly I might add, that Charles is oblivious around women and she of all people should know that. That was the thing that got her to calm down and when I realized that her love for him is strong, very strong. It may as well be unconditional at this point.”

Lyra chuckled just imagining the thought.

“You know Edward was worried about this. I distinctly remember a conversation about him about just this scenario happening with a random guy. This was before Charles arrived of course.”

“Pops? I thought he had no interest in romance at all after Mum died.” Replied a shocked Jager.

“Oh he did, not for himself of course, about you two. He wanted you to get a girlfriend as soon as you turned 20, which you did, and just prayed that Hannah would find the right man soon. He was worried that she never would you know, bring cooped up in the library or garden all day.”

“Ahem, did is the key word. We broke up a while ago. I think Wren is interested in me but we shall see. For now I’m trying to complete my training as fast as possible so I can impress Charles when he returns.”

“Good for you.” Said Lyra dryly. “Anyways, its getting late. You should start heading back. The last shuttle leaves in 30 minutes."

“Alright, I’ll see you later. I’ll be sure to keep you updated.” Said Jager opening the front door.

“Oh you better.” Replied Lyra before the door closed with a thud.

She swiveled her chair back towards the desk. The reports were still waiting. They could wait for tomorrow. Tonight she had plenty to think about.

CASTILLON
Development | The Bird's Eye View

The development continued swiftly and the population was growing. It wasn't 40,000 anymore, it had tripled and was still continuing to grow. The planet had been reorganized properly according to plan. Three regions had been established so far. More would be formed later. Armies of worker droids and Mahporeem engineers continued to arrive on schedule.

The capital was, as always, Castellum. The city was completely rebuilt using a more modern layout and construction standard. Dozens of high rises climbing into the sky. The streets bustling with rollers, pedestrians and markets. Underground sat the public transport, fast trains that could reach any corner of the city in 15 minutes. The spaceport was busy every day and a second one was now under construction. Convoys to and from Mahporeem arriving and departing every hour. Edward had become the Governor, his house becoming the official place of residence for the governor. The community leaders had become council members, ministers, clerks, etc. The port district, once the site of the original settlement, was unrecognizable, packed with restaurants and water taxis, its shores busy with people every day. The historical district was the centerpiece of the city, encompassing the main square and the surrounding districts. Its defining feature was the Grand Archive. A marvel of engineering, it took up nearly an entire district and was six stories in all: three underground and three above ground. Its exhibits and archives contained everything from historical relics to ancient texts. There was even an entire floor dedicated to the original Stryker and the men aboard. The people who came when nobody else would.

The Plains, or Sector Two officially, was also doing well. Garrcus of course was the sector Prefect. He always felt great. The Plains were doing well, Garrcus and his people worked hard every day to maximise the near infinite output of the Infinitum Plains. They now produced enough meat and grain to supply all of Castillon, have a surplus and send the rest off to Mahporeem. His home town of Goldfield was now a small city, processing the mountain of agricultural products that passed through every day and serving as the capital of Sector 2. It even had a small spaceport to serve the agricultural transport routes to Castellum and Mahporeem. The other towns were also growing and the transportation networks significantly improved.

The Hills, Sector Three, was improving too, but at its own pace. Lyra's settlement Wellspring had grown into a large town. The traditional water stewardship and rice farming techniques were still there, just supplemented with modern technology. There were scattered landing pads too, serving shuttles coming from the other two sectors. The water stewardship arrangement was formalized, the practice that had existed for 600 years finally receiving official recognition.

Finally Castillon's vaunted defense network was back online with significant improvements. The design having been meticulously planned by Charles and Voss to turn any attempted assault into a bloodbath. Dozens of Planetary Shield Generators were installed or repaired, most of them buried deep under mountains where they would be impossible to touch from orbit. A hundred heavy guns, mostly automated, were back online refurbished with new components. There were a dozen military bases scattered across the three regions to house the Garrison and supporting naval ships. Jager was in command, trained by Mahporeem instructors who arrived at Charles's request to train the initial batch of recruits. There were even a handful of special units such as the Castellum Guard (urban warfare specialists) and the Viridian Rangers (wilderness survival experts trained to operate behind enemy lines). Orbital defenses were handled by Mahporeem. A dozen orbital defense platforms, a dedicated defense fleet (who knew all the system's checkpoints) and First Scouting Squadron willing to return at the first sign of trouble constituted a formidable orbital defense. Any would-be attacker would now have to breach multiple layers of defenses, from the checkpoints in the oort cloud, automated guns in the asteroid belt and on Castillon's two moons, to the planetary defense guns. Castillon was back to being among the most fortified worlds in the Outer Rim.

But the numbers only told a part of the story. The rest lay with the people themselves. They had kept it alive over 600 years of isolation and what came after it was theirs. Castillon was no longer a footnote lost to time. It was the second most important world of the Mahporeem Imperial Remnant, second only to Mahporeem itself. The foundation was laid. What came next would be built by the people who had always been here and the people who had chosen to come and the children of both who would inherit something worth inheriting.

HANNAH
Before The Return | Castillon | Flashback

Who The Girl Was:
She was always in the library, not metaphorically, literally. In fact she spent so much time in the library that her father was concerned that she would never find a husband, never mind a boyfriend. Even when she wasn't in the library, she would stay relatively isolated minus the few times her friends from school would come over to visit.

She read everything from science, to history, to fantasy, anything she found interesting. The couch in the living room had a permanent indent from where she sat. The classroom wasn't much better. Isolated from her books, she was quiet and kept her head down. Her only friend was Sena, a flashy girl that took her under her wing and connected her to the rest of her group. They stayed close even after graduating, Sena pulling her further into the world one step at a time.

Hannah was 21 when she heard the Stryker descending from space. As always she was nose deep in a book, she didn't remember what, only that she looked out a window and saw a large shape descending into the city. She didn't know what it was, nothing had arrived in 600 years. Scared she hid in her room.

It was Jager who dragged her out of her room. Her older brother always meddled in her business. She resisted fiercely even after he told her about the men from the stars. She didn't want to meet new people, new people were always frightening because she knew nothing about them, Outworlders even more so.

Her resistance was futile. Jager had dragged her straight up to the front door. They were looking through a small window at the Outworlders. Her father was already there, speaking in a casual tone to who appeared to be the leader. Jager had wanted to greet them immediately. She protested, trying to convince him to wait until their father went to get them. It was pointless, Jager had already blasted open the door.

The Ambassador of Castillon:
The Outworlders were much more friendly than she expected. She had expected the worst. A conquering force, burning down and taking everything she held dear. Instead her father had invited the leader into their home where he showed her pictures of the outside galaxy. Their uniforms seemed familiar, their ancestors wore similar clothing back during the "Good Old Days". They moved with the military precision that she had only seen in history books or fantasy novels. Nothing like anything Castillon had produced in 600 years. Her father had assigned her and Jager to spend time with the Captain and show him around Castellum, a job she reluctantly accepted. She was curious though, who was this Charles and how was he commanding so many men when he was only three years older than her?

She really liked Charles. It was hard to tell why but she just enjoyed being around him. She was glad that her father was letting him stay over at their house. Every day she and Jager would ask him about the galaxy. Every day he would answer properly like it was the first time, always informative, always respectful. His Crew would visit occasionally too. She noticed how close they were. She hoped she could be treated like that one day.

It was two weeks after Charles's arrival when her father asked her and Jager to accompany Charles to the other two communities. The trio had gotten much closer during this time and were now good friends. She had agreed without hesitation excited to spend some time alone with him. She wished Jager didn't come, but he was Jager and he would never pass up that kind of opportunity.

They visited the Plains Community first talking with Garrcus before stepping outside to watch his wife move the roller into the back. The Fortis was setting, its yellow light dancing off the rivers, the sky a brilliant mix of orange, red and purple. The three stood together in silence for a moment taking in the view. Then Charles said he was heading back to his rack. He placed his hand on her shoulder as he passed. It wasn't much, just a friendly pat on the shoulder, but she felt it for days after.

When Lyra had asked her if there was anyone she fancied the feeling came up again. Warm, gentle, comforting, she knew this feeling, it was love. She couldn't bring herself to say it out loud though. Even as her body said otherwise. Charles was oblivious.

He continued being oblivious even when she subconsciously or consciously did things that a lover would do. Hugs that lasted for a second too long. Eye contact that lasted too long. A flushed face. Flustered looks or attempts at speaking. Her heart rate rising whenever she was around. When his ship climbed into the sky when he left after two months, she had said "I love you" to the sky and genuinely meant it.

As Mahporeem and the Castillonians continued to rebuild the planet, her father (now governor) quickly realized they were going to need an ambassador to maintain contact with Mahporeem and other planets. She was in the room when they picked her. She just happened to be the most qualified person in the room. It should have been flattering, instead it was horrifying.

She was not looking forward to having to communicate with strangers from across the galaxy. Plus she had to make her way, via shuttle, to the Mount Maximus station. The only bit of comfort she had initially was that it was not in person and Sena was there as her assistant. She also got to set up her own system. After much trial and error, plus volumes of notes she finally had a system going. The most important being a single consistent log, at 0700 every day. It was a single ping "Request for Captain Charles". It was her anchor, something productive to start the day with. That's what she told herself anyway.

Most of the time she got an automated "Sorry, the Captain is busy at the moment" and felt crushed, but every once in a while he would respond. When that happened she was happy for the rest of the week. She missed him more than she would ever admit.

Sena's Advice:
"Han, are you alright?" asked Sena, looking at her through her glareshades.

"I'm fine," she replied, staring off into the distance.

They were sitting under a large umbrella enjoying one of the many beaches of the Great Lake. Her other friends were off in the distance playing some kind of water tag that she wanted no part of. Sena had stayed with her, perhaps noticing her dour mood.

It took a moment before either one of them spoke again.

"It's Charles, isn't it?" said Sena, easily reading her best friend's face.

"Yes." came the quiet response. She shifted her legs up slightly so they were closer to her chest.

Sena put her hand on her back.

"Oh Han, you really got to tell him soon."

"I've tried! But every time I stop myself. I don't want to, but it's like a natural reflex!"

"Look," said Sena, removing her glareshades. "If you don't tell him soon he will remain oblivious. And if he remains oblivious he will probably just go out with the woman who asks him first."

"NO!" said Hannah, instantly on her feet. "I will travel to Mahporeem right now and…" She trailed off, realizing she had no time window to even get there.

Sena smiled. Her plan had worked.

"Just confess the moment he gets back, okay?"

"I will," replied Hannah, determination surging through her.

"In the meantime though, it seems Wren is calling to us. Let's go."

The two ran off to the shoreline.

The Kepi:
The kepi wasn't even hers to begin with. It was Jager's, given to him by Charles a few days before he left back to Mahporeem. He had given it to him with a purpose, like most things he did.

"Something to work towards." Charles had said, handing it over.

It was his Officer's kepi, something he had been wearing since his academy days. Jager had protested, asking if it was really okay for him to be handing over something so personal. Charles simply replied "You earned it, besides I wear my grandfather's helmet now instead."

She had acquired it about two weeks after he had left. Jager, being Jager, had left it on the kitchen table. She promised herself she would give it back. It never happened. Jager didn't ask for it back either.

Lost in a Cruel World:
Hannah was barely able to maintain her composure after she heard the rumor of damage to the Stryker during a battle over Mahporeem. As soon as she finished her work, she sprinted home and locked herself in her room. The kepi was in its usual spot on her nightstand. She grabbed it, throwing herself onto her bed.

Regret filled her mind. She pictured everything that could have happened to him. She should have just told him when she had the chance. Now he was systems away, potentially injured and she couldn't do anything about it.

She curled up tightly on her side clutching the kepi to her chest. She stayed like that until sleep washed over her. She slept in that position for seven nights after.

The Night Before:
She was about to finish her shift when a single message came in from Mahporeem.

"Standby for arrival of the First Scouting Squadron."

She read it twice, hope rising in her chest. It had to be him. She sat there for a while longer before heading to her room. She fell asleep with a smile, the first time since he had departed.

THE RETURN
Month Five | Castillon | Hannah and Charles

Hannah:
She woke up at 0611 which was nineteen minutes before usual. Today was the day. Her body trembled with excitement. She wanted to look her best. Not too formal. She went through her wardrobe until she found what she was looking for, a blue sundress, the perfect medium. She put it on quickly, making sure everything looked perfect.

She sent the 0700 ping as usual. There was a response. "Good Morning Castillon Station, this is Lt. Ferrin of the MIN Stryker II. Unfortunately the Captain is busy with the landing sequence at the moment."

"Stryker II, this is Castillon Station. Report your approach vector," she replied, her voice shaking. They weren't required to answer, but she needed to know.

"Uhh, First Scouting Squadron approaching Castellum 2. Stryker II over and out."

Sena had popped into the room, hair still messy from the previous night's sleep.

She mouthed one word.

"Go."

It was all Hannah needed.

Charles:
The bridge clock read 0703 as the Stryker II broke through the atmosphere closely followed by the 33 other ships of First Scouting Squadron. They had been cleared for Castellum 2, the capital's second spaceport. Castillon's stunning landscape filled the viewports as the ships continued their descent.

"Tell the ships to proceed to their landing pads and we'll see them on the surface."

"Aye sir," replied Ferrin, his fingers already moving across his console.

He could see Castellum in the distance. It was very different from when he left it. The Castillonians and Mahporeem crews had outdone themselves.

"Lucan, take us in. Nice and easy, we are in no rush."

"Copy that."

The ships continued their descent.

Hannah:
Mount Maximus fell away behind her as the shuttle made its way towards Castellum. She was no stranger to this, having taken this route dozens of times before. She had stopped looking out the viewport. Today she was. Thirty-four ships breaking through the clouds in perfect formation, the Stryker II leading the way.

She pressed her hand against the viewport. She watched them as they broke off to land at their separate pads. The shuttle pilot said something about a route deviation. She didn't hear it. All she cared about was the Stryker II and the man commanding it.

The shuttle arrived at Castellum One, the main spaceport. She weaved through the disembarking passengers, trying to reach the connecting shuttle as soon as possible. When the connecting shuttle landed she made it barely 20 steps before breaking into a run. He was here. She wanted him now.

Castellum Two was filled by the crews of First Scouting Squadron. Tens of thousands of men disembarking after their long voyage from Mahporeem. They parted as she passed. Then she saw him. He was standing near a supply crate looking over a datapad with his XO. They were discussing something when she called out to him.

"CHARLES!"

He looked up.

"Hannah?"

He didn't get a chance to say anything before she leaped. Her arms wrapped around his neck, legs around his waist. She buried her face into his chest. They stayed like that for a long moment, tears streaming down her face.

Then she pulled back and looked him straight in the eye. Everyone around them was silent now. His XO stepped back, giving them some space.

"I love you," she said quietly, her voice steady. "I have loved you since the grain field, since that trip to the hills…since forever."

"You love me?" he asked.

"Yes, I do. Don't ever forget that," she replied.

He stared at her, still holding her against him.

"What do you want me to do?" he asked finally.

"Be my boyfriend. I don't care about seeing if we are right for each other and all that. I love you, and I know you are the one for me. That's all I care about."

"Okay."

Someone started clapping, then another and another until everyone was clapping and cheering around them. She felt her face turn red. She buried it into his chest.

"They're clapping," he said.

"Make them stop. It's embarrassing," she said, muffled.

"I can't."

"I know."

His XO took a note. Smiled. Then walked away.

Operation Kiss Already

Prologue:
Charles and Hannah have officially become a couple. There is just one problem. Charles doesn't really know how romance is supposed to work. Hannah wants it to move along faster but dosen’t want to bug Charles. What the couple needs is an external push.

It was Holt who reached out first. He reached out through official channels after he received intelligence from the Crew on who Hannah spent time with the most on Castillon. A woman named Sena.

Hannah didn’t see the message. She was more absent from the relay station now to spend more time with Charles leaving Sena to pick up the slack. Sena didn’t mind too much. She was happy her friend and had finally found love. To her the message was confirmation of what she was thinking. She accepted the invitation without hesitation.

They met at a small restaurant just outside the main square. The meeting was planned secretly and well timed to ensure neither Charles nor Hannah noticed they were missing. They discussed their observations. Charles using a framework from a novel he read when he was nine stumbling as he struggled to remember the details. Hannah frustrated at the pace of the relationship and wanting it to move faster. They realized they had the same conclusion. An external factor was needed.

This was the start of Operation Kiss Already. A series of many operations large and small that led to Charles and Hannah’s marriage a year later. These are the highlights.

The Haunted Cave:
There was a cave in the Viridian Hills that the people of Castillon had been avoiding for approximately three hundred years. It was simply known as the West Cave and shrouded in mystery. There were even legends of people going missing while exploring the cave at night, with people swearing that they could hear voices beckoning them to come further into the cave.

Sena and Holt timed the trip well. It would be presented as a simple camping trip during a weekly leave Charles was proposing anyway for the Squadron. It was the perfect chance. If everything went right, Hannah would be holding onto Charles for dear life.

“So this is the cave.” Charles said, looking at the gaping maw in front of them.

“Sena! You didn’t tell me we were coming to this cave!” Hannah hissed into Sena’s ear while dragging her towards her.

“Oops.” said Sena, hiding a smile. She looked at Holt who looked back at her. He winked, then turned back to Charles.

“Sir, this is the West Cave. The most famous cave on Castillon due to the legends surrounding it.”

“Sounds interesting.” said Charles simply. He started to set up his and Hannah’s tents.

“I will make you pay for this.” snarled Hannah quietly into Sena’s ear. “You of all people know how easily I get creeped out. What if I embarrass myself!?”

“Oh please.” replied Sena calmly. “I got you a one on one situation with Charles. You should be thanking me.”

They finished up the camping site as Fortis started to set, casting long shadows across the land. Sena looked at Holt who looked back with a nod. It was time.

“Sir, I don’t believe we have explored the cave yet. Shall we do that?”

“Sure.” replied Charles, getting up from his chair.

“Love it! Han? You in?” asked Sena.

“Uhh…yeah. I’m in…Let’s not go too far though.” replied Hannah, barely concealing the shaking in her legs. She glared at Sena.

The went into the cave, Holt and Sena leading the way. The cave was impressive. Stalactites hung from the ceiling. There were pools of water as well from water dripping from the ceiling. There was a junction in the cave, one path was leading further into the cave. The other was the more established route that led back to the entrance.

“What are we thinking Holt?” asked Sena, she already knew the answer.

“This path looks good to me.” replied Holt, moving towards the first path.

Hannah’s breathing started to quicken. She grabbed Charles’s hand.

The party went further into the cave passing a couple impressive stone structures. The cool wind whistled through the cave, making some unworldly noises as it did. She gripped his hand tighter.

All of a sudden it was dark. Holt and Sena were gone.

Hannah nearly screamed. She put her hand over her mouth. Her heart rate was through the roof, her chest heaving as she took deep ragged breaths.

It was pitch black, not even the ground at their feet was visible. It was just them, the wind and the steady drop of water into the pools nearby.

“Interesting.” said Charles producing a glowrod. “Don’t worry Han, I know the way back from here.” He scanned the space around them.

“Intersting!? Charles? Charles, what is happening? Where did Sena and Holt go? Is there someone else in here!?” Hannah asked panic rising in her voice.

“Maybe they had to use the bathroom or something.” replied Charles. “Anyways, let’s wait for them for a moment. If they don’t come out in a couple minutes let’s just head back to the entrance.”

They waited in silence together. The single glowrod casting shadows against the walls as they waited.

Then a quiet sinister laugh. It was Sena but they didn’t know that.

“What the…” started Charles confused. He didn’t get to finish the sentence.

Hannah latched on to him tight with both arms, her face buried into his shoulder. She started whimpering, all pretense of composure gone.

“Holt! I know you are messing with me. Come on out.”

There was no response.

“Can you find me?” asked the voice.

Charles was about to march off in the direction of the voice when he finally noticed how much his girlfriend was trembling against him. He put his arm around her.

“Don’t go…please.” said Hannah quietly.

He stopped. Keeping his arm around her.

“Okay.” he replied. “Why don’t we head back.”

“You hear that Holt? We are heading back to the camping site! We’ll see you guys there!”

“Carry me.” whispered Hannah. “Carry me, I can’t walk right now.”

“Get on my back.” replied Charles.

Then he started carrying her back to the entrance.

Back behind a nearby boulder Holt and Sena looked at each other approvingly. Their plan had worked. Sena gave Holt a thumbs up, he winked back.

“Let’s get going.” Sena whispered as soon as Charles and Hannah were out of earshot. They trailed behind at a safe distance all the way back to the campsite.

Charles and Hannah were already back at the camp. They were sitting together on a log. His arm was over her shoulder and she was leaning into his shoulder. They looked up when Holt and Sena appeared.
“Welcome back.” said Charles, like it was just another Tuesday.

Hannah just glared at Sena before looking away.

Sena put on the most innocent face she had in years. Holt simply updated his datapad.

“It’s getting late guys don’t you think?” asked Holt.

“Yeah, you’re right.” replied Charles.

Fortis had long slipped under the horizon. It was a beautiful night, stars glitters, both moons and Vortex were visible.

Sena and Holt dismissed themselves soon after and headed for their respective tents. Hannah and Charles stayed awake longer. They stared into the campfire for a while until Charles spoke.

“Han, you gonna be okay by yourself? I’m going to go to sleep.”

“I’ll be fine…probably.” she replied quietly, looking down at the ground.

“Hmm, I don’t think so. Why don’t we share my tent for the night. Wait in there and I’ll bring your stuff over.”

Holt heard Hannah’s tent unzip and poked his head out just in time to see Charles stuffing her things through the door of his tent. He smiled, then retreated back into his tent to text Sena.

“Mission success! She is sleeping in his tent.”

“I told you the scare would work. Phase One complete, what’s next?”

“I’ve got just the idea.”

In the meantime, Hannah had gotten settled inside Charles’s tent. The night was warm so they were lying down on top of their sleeping bags. Charles was already asleep. The wind whistled through the hills. Hannah shuddered, she craved the physical comfort of his body.

She scooted over, then rolled onto her side so she was against him. Her face found the gap between his jaw and shoulder. She lay there for a moment looking at his peaceful expression. She closed her eyes, she could stay like this forever.

Integrity Test:
It had been a few months since the camping trip and over six months since Charles and Hannah first became a couple. Sena and Holt continued their schemes, but the men of First Scouting Squadron, Charles’s brothers in arms, were also covertly running their own tests. They had an easy time doing it since Hannah was spending more time aboard. Day trips turned into overnights, overnights into three days, three days into weeks and so on.

Today’s test was deceptively simple. Deliberately leak a classified piece of data and see what she would do with it. It was a test of integrity and loyalty, two qualities that were invaluable to the brotherhood and a romantic relationship.

It started in the late morning. Charles was absent having retired to take a nap after a long overnight shift. Hannah was at her station like usual helping Sena with a mountain of reports. It was routine. Sena always visited Hannah when the Squadron was in orbit above Castillon. For the most part the Crew pretended they weren’t there. It was a deliberate attitude, intended to unsettle her and say “You haven’t earned your place yet.” She knew it was deliberate, she had been reading people for years, and as much as it pained her, it only made her more determined to prove her genuine feelings for Charles.

Slasher and Bruiser walked past the station in what seemed like casual conversation. Something about the next combat operation. Bruiser deliberately let slip what coordinates and time they would arrive at. A fact if spread, could jeopardize the entire operation.

Hannah heard him. It didn’t take long for her to realize what was going on. She continued her work with Sena for approximately four minutes before getting up.

She walked directly over to the Tactical Officer Malren, who was busy fiddling with his datapad near the bridge viewports.

“That was deliberate right?” she asked.

“What was deliberate.” replied Malren, still looking at his datapad.

“That conversation between Slasher and Bruiser.”

“Ambassador, are you suggesting that our security protocols are so lax that we would let a mere civilian overhear a conversation with classified information?” he almost spat the word civilian like it was an insult.

“Yes, I am.” replied Hannah firmly. She knew it was a test, but she had to be careful not to overstep her boundaries. Disrespecting one of Charles’s senior officers, one of the ones he had served with for years would be a death sentence.

“Are you questioning my competence Ambassador? I have spent most of my life studying tactics and operational security. I have served alongside Charles for YEARS, in countless operations. You a mere civilian, think all of a sudden you have the right to question me just because you are the Captain’s girlfriend. How arrogant.” Malren was playing his role perfectly.

Hannah didn’t flinch. She knew exactly what to say in this situation. Relying on Charles would make them assume she was just with him for his status. Apologizing would make them think she was weak willed and susceptible to peer pressure.

“Senior Lt. I am not questioning your competence. I am stating what I heard, the exact coordinates of a hyperspace jump and the time of the Squadron’s arrival.”

Malren looked up from his datapad.

“Very well Ambassador, ensure neither you nor your friend leak this information…for your own sake.”

He turned away and headed for his station. Hannah went back to her station.

Sena looked at her.

Hannah looked back.

They didn’t say anything and resumed their work.

After Action Report | Encrypted First Scouting Squadron Group Chat:

“How did the test go?” asked Slasher.

“Good.” replied Malren. “She wasted no time informing the correct chain of command about a sensitive data breach and held her ground when questioned. Even when disrespected, she did not invoke the Charles card.”

“I have met many officers wives or girlfriends that love to use their husband’s or boyfriend’s rank to try to get away with things.” commented Voss. “The fact she did not only confirms to me what I suspected.”

“You mean Slasher’s ex?” said Bruiser, teasingly.

“Screw you.” replied Slasher.

“Can we get back on topic.” asked Ferrin.

“She didn’t gossip with her friend about it either.” said Castor, chiming in. “Just went back to work like it was just another Monday.”

“Kelven, you got any last comments? You fly her and her friends here and back. Noticed anything interesting?” asked Talven.

“Well she seems genuine to me. They don’t know that the passenger cabin has a camera and listening devices and whenever Charles comes up she always has something good to say about him.”

“Personality is the same as when she is onboard too. She is definitely not code switching that’s for sure. Honestly the only thing that I have heard her complain about is how she wants the relationship to move faster because she has so many future plans with him in it. And trust me they are good ones.”

The group chat was silent for a while. Every member of First Scouting Squadron reviewing the tests in their minds. The ones she had all passed, many with flying colors.

“Well, we have run what, like 50 separate tests on her?” said Slasher finally. “That combined with everyone’s observations over the last couple months. I think it’s about time we hold a vote.”

“I’m putting up the poll right now.” said Ferrin. “Everyone vote now or forever hold your peace.”

He sent the poll. It took less than an hour for everyone to respond. Over 70,000 across all 34 ships responding like it was the most important poll they had ever taken in their entire lives. The vote was unanimous.

“I think it’s clear.” said Holt, after the last votes had come in. “Reduce the frequency of the tests and switch to mostly observation. We only have three months until I plan to have these two married. This poll confirms it!”

The chat erupted.

“Just one problem Holt.” said Castor. “They haven’t even kissed yet. How are we going to get them married if even that hasn't happened yet?”

“Don’t worry.” replied Holt. “She is already all over him. It’s not even a performance, its like she genuinely requires him to be around to feel comfortable. I mean look at her. Y'all know how much time she has been spending aboard the Stryker II recently. Thanks to yours truly, of course.”

“Dude, you are creeping me out. How long have you been planning this and how much do you know about her?” replied Castor.

“Oh, let’s just say I have a very good intelligence source. A source that happens to be her best friend.”

“So you are telling me she is in on your schemes?”

“Even better helps me plan and execute them. Since the moment she confessed.”

“That’s diabolical dude. Are you ever going to tell Charles about this?”

“I will, and let’s just say I will be permanently securing the spot as the Captain’s favorite once I do.”

“Now, about the Kiss…”

The Bridge:
Two months before the Wedding. Hannah has officially moved onboard the Stryker II. Nobody would have noticed if they hadn't been looking. The transition from visiting daily to permanently living aboard was gradual enough to where it was not noticeable. There was no grand day, as she already had transferred the vast majority of her stuff to Charles’s Quarters before she announced it. It had taken her less than a week to make some adjustments. Just some minor things here and there. A plant on the desk, a sign on the hatch with both their names, some books on the shelf, her clothes in the closet and of course a giant beanbag.

Edward had watched her leave the house with it and sighed. He was happy that his daughter was finally moving out to live with the man she loved. He just hoped that she wasn’t turning Charles’s immaculate military style quarters into her messy childhood room. Jager saw it too and laughed. For once he didn’t interfere.

Charles and the crew had also taken measures to better accommodate her. Charles acquired an extra chair for the quarters, got a second plant to match the first, installed a carpet for the first time in his life and had Holt arrange a mini workstation right behind his command chair.

“Excellent location sir.” Holt commented, as they watched a couple of off-duty engineers set it up.

“Thank you, she said she likes looking at the stars and being near me. Seemed like the ideal spot.”

“Indeed.” replied Voss.

Hannah:

It was a typical evening. Charles was finishing up some reports and Hannah was writing some recommendations for Sena who replaced her as ambassador.

Hannah looked up. The bridge was empty. That was odd, normally the bridge was one of the most crowded places on the ship.

“Charles?” she asked, trying to get his attention.

He looked up.

“What’s up?” he said casually.

“Why is nobody here?”

“Just a maintenance cycle. Holt and Sorn told me about it this morning.”

“Oh.”

He went back to his reports. She went back to her notes. Well she was about to anyways until she noticed the warm light of Fortis through the viewports.

She stared at them for a while. It reminded her of the grain field all those months ago. It seemed like an eternity ago, his hand on her shoulder, the feeling it had left for days. Her heart wanting more, but her brain saying no.

She got up, walking to his chair and settling slowly on his lap. He looked at her, then went back to his reports. She leaned against him, her body limp from the comfort he gave her

“Remember when we first met?” she murmured, looking out the viewport.

“Yes.” replied Charles, finishing up the last report.

“What did you think of me?”

“That you were a shy girl.”

“Did you think that was weird?”

“No, I assumed you had your reasons.”

“I’m glad.”

“Glad of what?”

“Im glad you came. Even though you keep insisting it was by chance.”

“It was, without the Cartographer I could have gone in a completely different direction.”

“It seems like fate wanted us to be together.”

“I suppose so.”

He put his hands on her shoulders.

“You know, Banks told me a warrior fights differently when he has something worth returning to. I think I’m starting to figure out what he meant."

She turned around so she was facing him instead of away towards the viewport.

She looked at him. This was her chance.

She kissed him.

His eyes met hers as their lips touched.

He looked surprised but only for a second. Then pulled her in close. She did the same.

They stayed like that for a long moment.

When they finally separated she looked at him. He looked at her.

Neither of them said anything.

They smiled at each other.

“To the rack?” she asked finally.

“To the rack.” he replied.

Charles:
He felt amazing. It was the first time he had ever been kissed like that. He was sitting on the rack getting ready to go to sleep. Something warm stirred in his chest. His first girlfriend, this wonderful woman who treated him so well. Sometimes he wondered why she chose him.

He remembered being skeptical of relationships while at the academy. He saw that most ended in failure, some disastrously. One of his buddy’s girlfriend from back home cheated on him. It was a tragedy that he barely recovered from and had crippled the entire class for weeks as they tried to console him. He remembered not really understanding what was happening only that his friend was hurt.

He remembered trying to learn more about the topic. Asking Banks and reading some articles. He remembered getting thoroughly bored and confused. He gave up after the third book.

He looked at soon to be wife. She was undressing, folding away her clothes into the nearby closet. He looked away to give her some privacy.

“Look at me.” she said, a hint of demand in her voice.

“What?”

“Look. At. Me.” she said again.
