Are you more character oriented or team oriented?

I often wonder if we lack in strong leaders, if we're seeing a new trend of people shying away from factions, if a lot of the concepts have 'already been done', if we're 'in between eras' with a lot of the Major Factions out of play right now, or if our expectations for factions are too high right now.

I'm just spitballing here, no official staff discussion is touching this subject at the moment. Just reaching out for some community input, one could say I'm 'polling for opinions'.

What do ya'll think?

It depends.

The bulk of my development is heavily character dependant. I have writing partners that I enjoy roleplaying with and that drives my threads into the several hundreds of posts. However, I also enjoy setting up threads for others to roleplay in.

My personality, however, tends to gravitate me towards character oriented RP.

Honestly? I think you overthinking it. A lot of factions died and there still are a lot of minor factions buying their time waiting to go major. It is really a bit of timing and patience in that game from what I see.

I think there is a little dip in faction interest, but I also still see a lot of activity in factions. I think it will all work itself out.

My two cents.

Character. Factions often tend to be think-tanks of OOC friends finding IC stories together. Natural and absolutely not a bad thing on them in that regard. I indulge in them, but they come and go, and so I'm trying to focus more on the character and less on the group. More on what I can definitively control and contribute what to.

It all depends - for me - on how much free time I have to myself for writing. Because I'm usually at work, I restrict myself to private threads with a couple of people, but when I'm free to write with a wider schedule I like to get involved with faction stuff.

Case and point, I was super involved with the One Sith as a faction up until work started draining my life away - now I'm just in private threads and a rebellion or invasion here and there.

[member="Tefka"] I find I like character driven plots a lot. Events are fine factions cool but. lately so many of them are struggling with the huge workload of jsut maintaining a faction theres not much room to do much internally for the faction cause we gotta get another dom going. Lately also some have so much internal strife pulling in 100 directions it jsut makes getting posts out for those threads with them hard. So i think what it is well it's a mix of a lot of things.

Like my dad always says, "write the story". This is a common thing for him to say when it comes to business or my music. I also take that and apply it to my characters. I'm definitely character oriented. If there's a faction, I'll join to help them out with whatever, but personally, I've worked more on trying to develop the character instead of focusing on the exterior (aka inventory, status within a faction, etc.)

So honestly, as my public opinion to anyone, write your story. Develop your character because if you build your character, you will have a good story in the end. Of course, just like every story though, while you're writing that story (developing your character), you add in a little bit of the crazy things. Such as faction threads and the like.

Team-oriented, all the way. Though I try to do character-development in those threads.

Over in the Iron Empire, we take things at our own pace. No rush to do dominions.

Personally I'm more character/story driven. Not attached to any factions but if someone I write with mentions something or if I see an OOC advert for something that fits, I'll join. The recent GA sponsorships/contract dominions are a good example of this.

You mention if we lack strong leaders and I don't think we do. I have a feeling most of our stronger leaders are older and more strapped for time, forcing them to pick and choose what to do on the site. Do you want to be taking a salt bath over the latest Invasion as a FO/FA or do you want to use your limited time to RP out a thread with a character/person that's been on a 'bucket list' of sorts?

In my two years in Chaos, i had a team of three people whom i wrote with a lot. Two had to leave and the third too a few months later. Since then i havent been able to find actives writers (i do not expect people with jobs or family to post in a daily basis but hate when writers LOA for ever without sending you a message) For now i have a lot of time because of my university schedule, so will have no problem responding into complex long threads with a lot of people.

I personally like to have a team and can be very active in faction threads (hate when the leader put a thread for the 10-15 writers to post at the time. It becomes confusing trying to catch up. Got no problem with dominion threads tho)

But i think that sometimes a faction leader fails getting their faction going because they ignore the active writers and mix them with the inactive, LOA of two weeks, writers. If the faction has at least 20 people then they create a faction thread with the 20, and some of them arent going to respond for days or weeks, so the thread becomes boring, the others start waiting and then they forget that there was a roleplay to begin with. In dominion this doesnt happens a lot because it has thread inviting everyone with free time to write.

Im not saying to be discriminating with the inactive writers, although it may seems like it. I will too have times when i have to study for tests or have work to do and will not be able to enter or write, but at least i will post it or PM everyone im writing with.

Personally, I'm much more prone to just writing with a few friends (IC and OOCly) and factions often facilitate closer relations between characters. I guess my stance is a mix on the two. It's nice being independent and not being tied down and having to trudge through posts during invasions or dominions but that's where a lot of the faction appeal comes from: working together to progress as a group and develop In- and Out-of-character culture for yourselves.

Having been in the faction game for quite a while and having been on senior leadership teams for a few of them, it just burns me out with the "administrative tasks" so to speak. I've been hard pressed for time and would much rather just jump right into a story rather than worry about OOC relations with another faction because of what happened in the latest invasion.

Most of the time, I would agree. However, with Atheus being my major "Lone Wolf" Character who is trying to learn how to be a team player, and a Leader among men, It creates story by participating in these faction threads. Making him grow that way.

Most of the time though, I tend to go more for character than faction based. If a Faction is there for me, great. I will help however I can. If not, then I can fly solo.

This^

Add to this that at some point running a faction feels more like a job and it stops being fun which can sap your creative energy. So then you get faction staff teams who burn out and either go back to writing private threads or leave Chaos all together.

For me, it really depends on the character I mainly use.

I would like to be more character oriented, but time has shown that when I have limited time in my hands, I tend to restrict myself to only a few dominions or faction threads to help the faction more forward.
My character has time to wait. If I'm busy with other stuff, I can just pause my character development and private threads for a while, but factions don't wait. While I'm just sitting still, other people do move on. Therefore, I find it more important to help the faction out.

However, I wouldn't say I feel any pressure to do that. I just like to work with a team rather than post to my little private threads once in a week.

And faction threads are really great for character development, as well, if you use them right. ;)

I am most definitely character-oriented. I think that a good story happens when well-written characters interact, letting them create the story by their experiences. I let characters be influenced by what happens around them, and let them react accordingly. Factions are great to find allies and work together in threads, which is great, but I prefer having a well-thought out character over a well-run faction if I had to pick.

Ready are you? What know you of ready?
I don't necessarily understand a concept where they are seen as mutually exclusive. Sorel is 100% a team player and the majority of her posts are about character development :)
